by Lisa Krohn

Metropolitan was recently introduced to one of the few female premier orchestra conductors in the world today. Given the recent Oscar nominated film on this subject, we thought you would like to read about a true-life, female conductor. We know you will be as inspired as we were.

Amy Andersson is an internationally renowned, award-winning conductor. The Society for Composers and Lyricists recently awarded her for outstanding achievement in visuals and music. In February she accepted this specially created “Jury Award” for Women Warriors: The Voices of Change, a new symphony concert, for which she was creator, writer, producer and conductor!

This compliments her recent Grammy and BMI “Impact Award” for the soundtrack, as well as recent appointment as first female conductor to teach at USC in the screen scoring department.

Fun fact: Passionately devoted to the piano at an early age, at 10 she was composing scores and lyrics. On her 11th birthday, which fell during the winter, she composed a piece entitled “My 11th Winter”.

Reality check: What is your prep to learning an orchestra score and how does it feel to be on the podium?

Prep: Rigorous, detailed study of the ochestration, character, harmony, phrasing, bar structure and how to express that through physical gestures.

Conducting: It takes physical endurance and mental agility to achieve an expressive and organic oneness with the musicians through breath and movement. When it happens it is ECSTASY!!

Word count is 251.
