TABLE OF CONTENTS

• Upgrading our HVAC to a hospital-grade system • Purchasing new furniture for classrooms to ensure safe, individual work spaces • Hiring movers to help re-arrange furniture (both before and after school started) • Creating a nurse’s suite • We also funded two new positions devoted to safety: A nurse, who is an essential gatekeeper to the school, supporting me with policy and connecting regularly with parents of sick children (mind you, we have had no known Coronavirus cases yet) who are inquiring about protocols for testing their children so they can return to school.

Dear MMS Community,

• Hiring a security guard to oversee building access and facilitate contact tracing • Acquiring new cameras, microphones, and other devices to improve remote learning

With the arrival of the COVID-19 crisis, the 2019-2020 school year tested Metropolitan Montessori School. But it also helped prove our resilience—and the value of having a tightknit community with a collective sense of responsibility to each other. This Annual Report focuses particularly on one aspect of that loyalty, philanthropy. Last year, our fundraising efforts focused on two areas. In the spring, we established the MMS Stronger Together Fund. This restricted fund provided temporary tuition-related assistance to current MMS families who found themselves in unexpected financial circumstances due to the COVID-19 crisis. Thanks to

We were proud to reopen on September 9, 2020, offering full days of in-person learning to families five days a week (some of our families have opted to be remote). We’re in a small group of schools across the country that can provide this opportunity to their students. I wish I could say the eye of the storm has passed. The reality is your continued and

donations facilitated: • Last March, when “remote learning” was just a buzzword, our teachers instinctively grasped the enormity of the challenges of switching to online school. Immediately, we needed to buy new devices and e-learning platforms, and mail out academic materials. • This summer, as we geared up to return to West 85th Street, we made a number of substantial changes to the building:

Chairs Becca Tilghman and Chris Hancock, MMS Annual Fund Alumni Chair Anne Hayes, along with their committee of dedicated parent volunteers, we raised over $390,000, which included gifts from 88 percent of our parents. In a year with so much economic turmoil, this figure is impressive and illustrates a strong allegiance to MMS. Donors directed $170,000 of overall contributions to the MMS Stronger Together Fund, which provided tuition support, enabling several of our students to return to MMS who otherwise would not have been able to return. As we entered the summer, the enormous task of reopening school lay ahead. With new scientific

Dear Members of the MMS Community, The 2019-2020 school year is one that none of us will ever forget. As an institution, MMS has been through several stages in confronting this ongoing coronavirus crisis. Through each of those stages, certain members of our community have gone the extra mile to help the school navigate these difficult times. They provided skills, time and resources whether it was setting policies, fundraising, providing a sense of calm and stability, or planning much needed moments of celebration. I want to take a moment here to thank as many of them as possible. First and foremost, my deepest gratitude goes to Head of School Racheal Adriko and her team of academic leaders, Karina Cruz, Jody Quam, Nancy Burton (and now Anna Martucci) for a quick transition to online learning over spring break in March and their ongoing efforts through the summer of 2020 and on to create a productive learning environment. During the height of New York City’s lockdown, our community gathered virtually for a wonderful, family-friendly Benefit. Kudos to the incredible team—including parent Benefit Chairs Kali Karagias, Charlotte Crawford, and Gabriel Aldort and Development & Special Events Manager Melissa Stewart, Music Teacher Chelsie Nectow, and MC/Parent Andrew

research coming out daily, Racheal formed a panel of volunteers with scientific, medical, and insurance backgrounds, including Trustees, to support MMS and ensure a safe return to inperson instruction and learning. Thank you to Dr. Magdalena Cerda, Preeti Gureja, Dr. Luana Fioriti, Dr. Shirley Tilghman, Monique Kotsen, Dr. Fabio Stefanini, Dr. Jillian Parekh, Dr. Kelli Stidham Hall, Claudia Hamilton, and Health Advisory Coordinator Nicole LaMariana. I also want to thank my fellow Board of Trustees members who met routinely over the summer to make important strategic budgetary decisions that allowed us to reopen. In addition to financial donations, many members of our community gave their time in important and meaningful ways. Thank you to Bree Vandenberg, who led the Parents Association with the assistance of Juliane Trautmann this year, and who is now the 2020-2021 PA Chair. And thank you to the many other MMS parents who devoted time serving as Room Parents, helping out at Admissions events, coordinating community service efforts, organizing the MMS Book Fair, the International Potluck Picnic and much more. Finally, to each and every donor, as Racheal’s report indicates, your gifts were more than essential this year. On behalf of every member of this community—especially those with children attending school—your generosity is deeply appreciated.

Merelis—who produced such an uplifting occasion. Later that spring, every teacher and many

staff also spent countless hours creating memorable year-end events, including a community-

MMS Board of Trustees THIS YEAR WE WELCOME THE FOLLOWING NEW TRUSTEES TO THE BOARD:

DR. SHIRLEY M. TILGHMAN Shirley M. Tilghman was elected Princeton University’s 19th President on May 5, 2001, after serving on the Princeton faculty for 15 years. She oversaw the expansion of the undergraduate student body, the creation of a four-year residential college system, and the founding of the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, and the Lewis Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. Upon the completion of her term in June of 2013, she returned to the faculty. During her scientific career as a mammalian developmental geneticist, she studied the way in which genes are organized in the genome and regulated during early development, and was one of the founding members of the National Advisory Council of the Human Genome Project for the National Institutes of Health. Shirley serves on the MMS Health Advisory Committee, which has guided the School’s pandemic safety measures and policy. She is the grandmother of Nora (Grade 2) and Henry (Preschool 4s).

ANNE WILLIAMS -ISOM Anne Williams-Isom is the James R. Dumpson Chair in Child Welfare Studies at the Graduate School of Social Service at Fordham University. Previously, she served for six years as the Chief Executive Officer for the Harlem Children’s Zone, before which she was HCZ’s Chief Operating Officer. As COO, she oversaw all programs in HCZ’s cradle-throughcollege pipeline, including Promise Academy I and II, led HCZ’s 2,000+ staff, and strengthened the organization’s use of data to improve services and outcomes for over 25,000 children and families. She also restructured HCZ’s College Success Office and developed innovative strategies to support college students individually and at scale. Prior to joining HCZ, Anne worked in leadership at New York City’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) for 13 years, concluding her tenure as Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Community and Government Affairs. She is the parent of MMS graduates: Aiyanna ‘05, Phillip ‘08, and Ande ‘14.

PE TER AUSTIN VLACHOS, TRUSTEE EMERITUS Peter Austin Vlachos first joined the MMS community in 1975, when his children Zoë ‘82 (a current MMS Trustee and parent) and Dimitri ‘85 were students. As a board member in the 1970s and ‘80s, he championed scholarship opportunities, school diversity, and employee benefits. At the time, MMS was a cooperative school in which parents would take on various responsibilities, such as painting chairs, creating Montessori materials, and doing construction. Through the decades, Peter always maintained a strong connection to MMS and is excited to re-engage in the stewardship of the institution. Professionally, Peter has had a long career in financial advisory and investment management. In 1989, Peter founded Austin Investment Management and has served as a Managing Director at Adalta Capital Management since 2016. Peter has also served on the boards and investment committees of Colby College, Outward Bound, Scenic Hudson, HANAC, Inc., and The School for Strings.

COVID-19 Response: Faculty & Staff Recognition THE PANDEMIC HAS SHONE A SPOTLIGHT ON THE ESSENTIAL NATURE OF SCHOOLS IN NOT ONLY EDUCATING CHILDREN, BUT STABILIZING THE SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LIVES OF FAMILIES AND UNDERGIRDING THE ECONOMY BY GIVING PARENTS THE FLEXIBILITY AND FOCUS TO WORK, BE IT INSIDE OR OUTSIDE THE HOME. A SCHOOL IS ONLY AS STRONG AS THE ADULTS WHO CARE FOR AND EDUCATE STUDENTS ON A DAILY BASIS. THE DEEPEST GRATITUDE SHOULD BE EXPRESSED TO THE FACULT Y, STAFF, AND ADMINISTRATORS OF MMS FOR THEIR WORK E THIC, FLEXIBILIT Y, AND INGENUIT Y IN THESE TIMES OF GREAT UNCERTAINT Y.

MMS ANNUAL FUND The MMS Annual Fund provides essential funding that can be used immediately. By giving to the Annual Fund, we ensure educational excellence and continuity for our school and families. We also model responsible community engagement for our children. As we continue to offer and renew a rich, child-centered Montessori education, we want to thank every member of our community for the pivotal role they play in transforming the life of every child.

THE MMS STRONGER TOGE THER FUND This restricted fund within the Annual Fund, established in April 2020 in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, provides temporary tuition assistance to current and incoming families adversely financially affected by the COVID-19 crisis. In future years, this fund will help supplement our

PLANNED GIVING Increasingly, independent schools use planned gifts to augment outright giving to the School.
