Letter from the Head of School & the Board of Trustees Chair

All gifts to the fund suppor t: Dear Members of the MMS Community,

The Annual Report salutes our donors from the 2018-2019 school year and tells the story of how that philanthropy is impacting Metropolitan Montessori School today. Since the COVID-19 crisis began, these donations have helped our students immensely. Gifts to last year’s Annual Fund paid for new educational software, online materials, and technology to help our students transition to online learning. They also covered the purchase of thousands of dollars in cleaning products to help protect our students while they were still in school. In this publication, philanthropy may look like a series of names and numbers, but behind it all is a group of volunteers, taking time out of their busy lives, to call or meet with potential donors, explain why giving matters, and talk about MMS. We want to acknowledge some of those people here: During the 2018-2019 academic year, the MMS Annual Fund Committee,

led by Claudia Hamilton and Pim Kraaijeveld, raised $287,981. Our $4 million capital campaign — which supported our school expansion — concluded in January 2019. I am extremely grateful to Monique Neal, Frank Kotsen, former Head of School Brenda Mizel, and my wife, Joyce Maffezzoli, for joining me in leading this effort. Thank you also to Devina Bhandari, Ralitza Horler, and Anna Sarly for organizing the Annual Spring Benefit event, which brought in $201,180. In addition to financial donations, many members of our community gave their time in important and meaningful ways. Thank you to Bree Vandenberg, who led the Parents Association with the assistance of Sara Lind last year and with Juliane Trautmann this year. And thank you to the many other MMS parents who devoted time serving as Room Parents, helping out at admissions events, coordinating community service efforts, and organizing the MMS Book Fair and the International Potluck Picnic. As the impact of this pandemic deepens, so will the needs of our school community. While 5

tuition covers the lion’s share of our operational costs, we rely on additional giving to supplement them. Over this summer, we will be making costly investments in building modifications and new staff positions to foster a healthy environment. With the expectation that school will involve online and in-school learning next year, we will also be arranging for important faculty professional development. We are invigorated by the hard work and ingenuity of our teachers and those members of our community that have lent their time and talents to supporting MMS. We understand that many families are grappling with the financial upheaval of this crisis. If your family has the capacity to give, we ask that you donate to the MMS Stronger Together Emergency Fund, which flows toward temporary tuition-related assistance to current MMS families in unexpected financial circumstances due to the COVID-19 crisis. Your donation provides continuity in a child’s education and supports the overall health of the school, which relies on tuition dollars. Crises offer opportunity, as so many 6

have said. The opportunity to try something new. The opportunity to come together for the greater good. The opportunity to show our children how to confront a problem and persevere toward a solution. The coming year will have many of these opportunities to seize. In collaboration, we ask that you join us, with a spirit of generosity and service, in seizing those opportunities.

Warm regards, Racheal Adriko Head of School Jim Maffezzoli Chair, Board of Trustees

Giving Eager Minds Room to Grow: The Campaign for MMS

THE CAMPAIGN FOR

In January 2019, Giving Eager Minds Room to Grow: The Campaign for MMS concluded, with gifts from current parents, alumni families and MMS friends, totaling $4 million. On October 23, 2016, with the support of dedicated Campaign Committee members and donor families, former Head of School Brenda Mizel, Board Chair James Maffezzoli, along with his committee Co-Chairs Joyce Maffezzoli, Monique Neal and Frank Kotsen, MMS officially opened our expanded space with a ribbon-cutting and an opportunity for current families, alumni, and our broader community to tour our new building. We are extremely grateful for everyone’s generous support.

I’ VE BEEN AT MMS FOR SIX YEARS. I HOPE TO RETIRE

THAT. I FEEL SUPPORTED. SINCE STARTING HERE, I’ VE

WE KNOW THAT MONTESSORI GIVES STUDENTS A LOT OF FREEDOM TO DEVELOP THEIR INTERESTS. IT’S THE SAME

WITH TEACHERS. I’ VE STAYED FOR 20 YEARS BECAUSE IT’S NEVER TEACHING THE SAME THING YEAR AFTER YEAR.

FOR INSTANCE, WITH MY SIXTH GRADERS, I WANTED TO

GIVE THEM SOMETHING FUN AND INTERESTING TO FINISH THE YEAR. I DECIDED TO TRY TEACHING LATIN, BECAUSE TRANSLATING LATIN TO ENGLISH IS LIKE A PUZZLE. THE

KIDS LOVED IT, AND NOW IT’S A REGULAR PART OF THE

CURRICULUM. THEIR LATIN INSPIRED THE ART TEACHER TO DO A PROJECT AROUND ROMAN TILES. BECAUSE OF

OPPORTUNITIES LIKE THIS, MMS IS AN AMAZING PLACE TO

WORK. THE KIDS INSPIRE US, AND WE INSPIRE EACH OTHER.

ON APRIL 26, 2019, over 200 current and alumni families, faculty, and friends attended the MMS Annual Spring Benefit at the New York Athletic Club. The energy in the room was palpable and filled with inspiration, camaraderie, and talent. Together we celebrated our community, celebrated our fundraising effor ts throughout the year, and saluted our outgoing Head of School, Brenda Mizel. The evening grossed over $200,000 in suppor t of many aspects of school life. A wholehear ted thank-you goes out to Co-Chairs Devina Bhandari, Ralitza Horler, and Anna Sarly, the Spring Benefit Committee and all the volunteers who made the event so memorable!

Raise Your Paddle Most families recognize the MMS lunch program is not the norm. Chefs Lisa and Rich do an extraordinary job catering to our students and faculty. Their food is fresh, healthy, and when possible sourced locally - often from our very own student planted rooftop garden. They have implemented campus-wide sustainability practices and developed nutrition in classroom curricula. The 2019 ‘Raise Your Paddle’ initiative helped raise the necessary funds to provide our chefs with a state-of-theart commercial kitchen, enhancing the efficiency and ventilation of the space while improving the breadth of food choices for our community.
