COVER STORY Corporation and other high speed Rails projects in India. 60E1 1175HT Rails: Till date 60E1 1080HH Rails as per IRS-T-12 was used in Metro Rail Corporations and other high speed Rails projects in India. Indian Railways is transforming Rail infrastructure to increase Design Speed, Axle Load and reduce wear of Rails. To meet the increasing demand IR is modifying Rail specification to bring it at par with International standards. 60E1 1175HT Rails is newly designed by RDSO and IR. These Rails are equivalent to European R350HT grades with regards to Rail profile and chemistry but follow more stringent Quality tests. JSPL is the first and only Indian manufacturer to successfully develop this stringent quality Rails suitable for High speed and High Axle Load application.

Asymmetric Rails: ZU-1-60 turnout Switch Rail is used for curve Rail sections to avoid the high pressure and prevent Rail break. In 2003 or 2004, IR decided to use these switches on all the Class A routes and other high-density routes with traffic above 20GMT/year. The new switches have been designed to be easily installable on top of existing pre-stressed concrete sleepers supporting older switches. Till date, these Rails were imported from foreign manufacturers. JSPL has developed the special steel to substitute import and support in GOI vision of making “Atma Nirbhar Bharat”. "Indian Railway standard specification for flat bottom rails IRS T12-2009 brings out all the technical requirements for producing high quality rails meant for mixed traffic (passenger & Goods), this specification is at par with other Rail specifications in the World. Goods train is always with higher axle load as compared to passenger train therefore the rails produced by JSPL to IRS- T -12 specification, it meets the requirement of Indian railways for mixed traffic . This methodology is prevalent in major Railways systems in the procurement of Rails", says Mr Sharma.. APPLICATIONS Indian Railways Main Line Tracks , DFCC, Metro Rail Corporations, High Speed Rail Projects Sidings of Power Plants, Refineries, Steel Plants, Cement Plants, Fertilizers Plants, etc.
As the need for going "Local for Vocal'' gains popularity among the masses and the Atma Nirbhar Bharat movement gains popularity, companies like JSPL are a great boon for the nation. They are not only supplying critical products to the Nation but are also making significant exports further bringing Dollars to the country. The India of the 21st century is moving forward with its industries supplying to every corner of the world. Until a few years back, India used to import the HT Rails as the Indian firms were not able to manufacture these Rails. The scenario has changed today with JSPL becoming the sole Indian private Company capable of producing these Rails.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
In a Conversation with Mr V R Sharma, Managing Director, JSPL Our Managing Editor Mr Narendra Shah and Our Senior Editor, Mr Manoranjan Kumar had a conversation with Mr V R Sharma, the Managing Director of Jindal Steel & Power Limited. Here are some excerpts from the brief Conversation :Narendra Shah- JSPL has emerged as a leading manufacturer and supplier of Rails across India and the world today. What has been the strategy behind it? V R Sharma - Delhi Metro started operation in the year 2002. They imported Head Hardened Rails from Japan and Europe. We, in JSPL installed a Rail Mill in 1998. We were supplying Rails to Indian Railways for Railway Siding & yards. The main track Rails were either imported or were supplied by SAIL, Bhilai. The consumption of Head Hardened Rails grade 1080 was increasing month after month because Delhi Metro commissioned its Phase-1, Phase-2 and declared Phase-3 expansion. We met Metro Rails Engineers and found that the suppliers of Head Hardened 1080 grade worldwide are very few. We found an opportunity in this business. Since it was a highly technical product, we started scouting the useful and cost effective technology so that the cost of Metro Rails Tracks can be reduced. We found a world’s reputed supplier SMS-Meer, Germany who had developed the Rails Head Hardened (HH) technology. Our Rail mill is also built by SMS-Meer group, Germany. In the year 2013 we placed order on SMS-Meer to supply us Head Hardening facility and integrate the same in our Rail Mill. In the year 2016 we commissioned our Plant and first order we got from Iran for Head Hardened Rails for High speed Rails tracks. Successfully we supplied 20,000 tons HH Rails to Iran Rails and the quality certification was done by international quality control agencies. This was a beginning. After having supplied to overseas customer and after obtaining a good size of order, we approached Indian Metro Rail projects. Narendra Shah – How was the response from Indian Metro Rail projects and Indian Railways ? V R Sharma - Initially the response was slow but finally Metro projects started taking interest. The basic reasons for interest was the inconveniences Metro projects were facing in most of cases.
Mr V R Sharma, Managing Director, JSPL d) Smaller lengths - 13 meter or 26 meter long Rails because of sea route. Hence more number of weld joints are required. e) The risk of currency fluctuation was on Indian buyers. 2) Buying locally from India is advantageous to buyer. a) We can supply as low as 500 tons quantity per order b) Our payment terms are flexible and customer friendly
1) To import HH Rails, the Metro projects were required to meet the conditions of foreign Rail suppliers in most of the deals such as –
c) We deliver Rails up to project sites damage free as number of handling is reduced.
a) Minimum order quantity (approximately 3000 - 5000 tons) to be given as per the demands of foreign Rail Suppliers.
d) The delivery is done within 30-45 days or earlier if there is a specific request.
b) Upfront opening of LC/TT Payment atleast 4-6 months in advance.
e) No risk of currency fluctuation
c) Waiting time was too high, that is 4-6 months from tender

f) Our Rails are RDSO approved and inspected by RITES (A Government of India Company)
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW g) We can deliver Rails in the length up to 234/260 meter which reduces number of weld joints and laying is easier. Narendra Shah- RDSO has recently approved 60E1 1175 Heat Treated (HT) Rails manufactured by JSPL for use in higher axle load & high-speed trains. How will this move change the future Rail business of your firm? V R Sharma - The grade 1175 HT is an exciting product. Indian Railways asked us to develop this grade of Rails to enable them to carry heavy load/wagon that is 75 tons instead of 64 tons/wagon as of now. We consulted our technology partner and finally we produced these 1175 HT grades of Rails successfully. We believe that in next 8-10 years the entire country will have 1175 HT grade of rail tracks. Now JSPL is fully approved for Main track Rails grade 880, R260, 1080 HH and 1175 HT . JSPL has already supplied Rails for main track of Indian Railways. Narendra Shah - Can you please tell how JSPL started its venture in the Rail business? How do you take it today as the Managing Director of the firm? V R Sharma - The entire country’s mind set is changing after the campaign driven by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Mr Modi to go “ vocal for local”. Indian Railways Engineers started utilizing the local sources as substitute to imported Rails. Thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister, Ministry of Steel, Ministry of Rails and Indian/Metro Railway Engineers. Narendra Shah - What are the business prospects which you are looking for in the near future? Are you going to bring any new product for the Rail and Metro Sector? V R Sharma - Indian Railways + Metro projects have projected 1.70 Million ton of demand of Rails per year. In addition, more than 2,00,000 tone Rails of 1080 grade are required by Metro Rails projects/Rapid Rail Projects in the country. Therefore, it is a huge market. The vocal for local will boost the sale of Rails from JSPL. Narendra Shah - JSPL is already a key player in the Indian steel business and making good profits? How has the company performed in the last quarter? V R Sharma - We made net profits in Q-4 of last year after a gap of more than 5 years. We are maintaining the same spirit in all subsequent months and quarter. During the Covid pandemic lockdown , we made an ever highest EBIDTA .
Manoranjan Kumar - The power sector is one of the most stressed sectors for the last few years. What is the status of the power business of JSPL? V R Sharma - We are operating our power plants at 60 % capacity and the demand is picking up now. We have reached 70-75 % capacity utilization and in the next few months, we will reach to full capacity utilisation. We have requested the government of India for "One Nation One Tariff", policy which will enable the country to make the cost uniform across the country. The electricity prices are to be rationalized like telecom sector where its rate is uniform across the country. It will help revive the industry and create rapid industrialization across the country. Manoranjan Kumar - The government of India had allocated a relief package of Rs 90,000 crores to the power sector. Has it brought any major change or something more is needed? Please express your views.
In Q-2, we maintained the pace and earned EBIDTA more than Q1. We have grown 19 % (YoY) in production and 30 % (YoY) in Sale and the EBIDTA margin is 31 %.
V R Sharma - The disbursement of Rs 90,000 Cr is definitely help to us because States are now in a position to pay on time for the electricity purchased by them.
Manoranjan Kumar - Whom would you like to give its credit to?
Manoranjan Kumar- In which segment of the business, you are going to invest the most in the next financial year? What do you think about the power sector when it comes toinvestment?
V R Sharma - It is a complete teamwork and Mr Naveen Jindal is a farsighted person. Mr Jindal invested in Infrastructural steel making products rather than producing the commodities. He delegated his authority to his people so that they can work well and that is the reason the Company is doing well.
V R Sharma - We are not going to invest in any of the businesses in near future. We are going to make our company debt-free or lean debt company. We don't want to take further loans from banks.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW
Manoranjan Kumar - What do you think about the future of the Steel and Power sector? Is the route for recovery going to belong for these sectors?
like Signalling system, Engines, Safety gadgets, control panels may be supplied by credit line countries.
V R Sharma – The future depends upon present. The current situation is very favourable for steel industry. Most of the major/integrated steel plants are running @ 90-95% capacity utilisation. Manoranjan Kumar - When we come to the Rail business, there are a lot of foreign players in the market? How can the Make in India move get successful in the Rail Sector? What do you expect from the government? V R Sharma – I would like to request Government of India to remove restrictive clauses from Global/Local tenders that impede the domestic players. Secondly, the Government of India shall come up with a clear direction to Metro Rail projects and Indian Railways that there should be No Imports of Rails .Once again will reiterate that the restrictive clauses in tenders to be abolished to make dream of ‘Atmanirbhar’ true. Sometimes we find clauses in tender documents of Rails that the supplier should be in profit during last 3 financial years. Such clauses are detrimental to new suppliers. The Rails are sold on the basis of technical merits as per norms laid by RDSO and inspection by RITES (Government of India Co.) The entry of foreign suppliers of Rails should be banned because local capacities &capabilities are available. If foreign suppliers want to avail share of Indian business then they should make an investment in India and should produce Rails in India. The concept of Atma Nirbhar Bharat should be kept in view always.
Manoranjan Kumar- Different RRTS projects are coming up in different parts of the country. The Bullet Train Project is also gaining pace. With this, the demand for rails will increase? What are your plans for the expanding Indian rail market?
V R Sharma – The Rail projects being executed on credit lines facility from different countries like Japan are very unfavourable for steel industry in India specially for Rail manufacture. The Japanese Government is supplying Rails to Dedicated Freight Corridors and to Bullet train project. Government of India should discourage such a credit line facility where steelproducts or Rails are coming from the country who extends credit limit. Technology

Manoranjan Kumar - You have already started supplying Rails to Kolkata Metro. How has been your journey with Kolkata Metro? Do you have any ongoing deals with other Metro Corporations? V R Sharma – Yes we have already supplied to Kolkata Metro and we are expecting next order soon. The supplies to Pune Metro are going to be started shortly. Still global tenders are being floated. Government of India/Ministry of Urban development must work on 5 Hon’ble Prime Minster’s vision “ Vocal for Local” and should ban imports of Rails because we have capability & capacity to meet out entire requirements of Rails.
Manoranjan Kumar - Please share your views about the Atma Nirbhar Bharat plan and Make in India initiative? What are the major things which are vital for the success of these initiatives? Kindly express your opinion. V R Sharma – This is a positive development. Thanks to Hon’ble Prime Minister, Mr Modi. I am sure, whole country will soon start working on this direction. We must buy/prefer local products. This will boost our economy. India can be Atma Nirbhar in steel with immediate effect. Manoranjan Kumar - Kindly share a message for our readers. V R Sharma- It's time to localize and you will be a torchbearer in this process of localization.

SSD Business of JSPL We have already featured Rail Business of JSPL as our cover story.. It has other business divisions which are of equal importance for the Infrastructural development of our nation. The Steel Structure Division also known as SSD Division is of huge importance when it comes to the development of high-rise and multi-story Buildings. JSPL is not only a leading name but has also earned the trust of all stakeholders in this domain. According to a study published in 2019, nearly three-quarters of the 50 tallest skyscrapers in the world are located in Asia and 59 of the world’s tallest 100 buildings are in Asia. Though most of these tall steel buildings are concentrated in the Middle East, China, Japan and , developing countries like India, Indonesia, and Bangladesh are also fast catching up.
structures in various customized shapes and sizes delivered within very tight timelines", says Mr. V R Sharma, the Managing Director of JSPL. "Additionally, JSPL Structural steel division also maps potential demand being created from multiple avenues like the developing national infrastructure, with the government's impetus on infrastructure building in India through various road, railways and metro projects. Additional potential sectors of demand are avenues being created due to the expected relocation of other manufacturing hubs from across the globe post-Covid-19 to India. With a focus on health facilities, health infrastructure and allied
A lot of high-rise steel buildings are coming in India e s p e c i a l l y i n c i t i e s l i ke Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai – Navi Mumbai, Delhi-NCR region including Noida and Gurugram etc. Steel is more durable, steel structures can be maintained easily and less frequent repairs are required for steel structures due to the various physical and chemical properties of steel. These features of steel have helped in the development of many high rise buildings in India and abroad. The high ductility of steel leads to better seismic resistance of the member due to its ability to absorb the energy released by seismic forces. Due to their high resistance against tensile loads, steel structures can withstand heavy loads and seismic activities better compared to concrete structures of comparable weight.
medical industries is another area of potential demand for composite steel structures", he adds. JSPL provides the following construction solutions:-
Even better are the steel-concrete composite elements that use concrete’s compressive strength alongside steel’s resistance to tension, resulting in a highly efficient and lightweight unit that performs better against both compression and tensile forces making them perfect for structures like high rise buildings. "JSPL collaborates closely with developers, architects, structural consultants and EPC service providers across the country to map the demand and be a solution provider to them in envisaging, planning and delivering high rise steel commercial buildings, solutions in the form of high strength engineered steel fabricated

1. Customized fabricated steel structures with fabrication in Stateof-the-art manufacturing facilities, 2. Jindal SpeedFloor System 3. In-house Design & Engineering, 4. Detailed Modeling & Fabrication Drawing, 5. Site Supervision & Erection Guidance,
6. Project Scheduling for steel structure for better cash flow management of the project The benefits of Steel composite buildings are as follows: 1. They are Cost-effective, based on life cycle cost analysis since steel structures can be maintained easily and less frequent repairs are required for steel structures. 2. The cost of formwork is lower for steel structures compared to RCC construction 3. Steel structures provide larger saleable areas due to their ability to cover large column-free areas. This leads to more usable space. The area occupied by the composite column is much less than the area occupied by the RCC column. 4. Keeping span/loading unaltered, smaller structural sections are required compared to non-composite construction. Therefore, a reduction in the overall weight of the composite structure compared to the RCC construction results in lesser foundation costs. 5. Steel composite buildings generate early revenues through operations or early sales leading to a reduction in the interest on the cost of capital, quicker return on the invested capital thus better NPV for the project. As far as the up-front cost of the structure is concerned, we started with a 20% cost difference b/w RCC and composite steel buildings in 2014 but with the advent of better engineering and better structural designs and with the prevalent manufacturing of value-added grades like E 450 and E 550 plate built up and hot-rolled sections, now the cost difference is reduced to as low as 8-10% and at sometimes it is even at par with the RCC buildings. Innovation in steel production, combined with greater competition to meet rising steel demands, has brought steel prices significantly down. With reduced up-front cost combined with the additional advantage of speedier construction and thus higher cash velocity, it leads to a better NPV for the entire project cycle compared to that of an RCC building.

An interview with Mr Mayank Agarwal, Head of Operations, Rapido Q1. Rapido is already more than five years old now. How do you take the journey of Rapido? What are the services which you are providing today? India is the largest 2W product and consumer in the world. In spite of that, the 2W ride sharing penetration is quite low. But it has a potential of creating 5M+ livelihood opportunities. With the existing asset utilization, especially in tier II and III cities, we came up with a highly scalable model to address the last mile connectivity gaps. Transportation is required in any market, and we are a matching platform - a customer who needs a ride, and a Captain who earns his livelihood by catering customer’s needs. We charge a minimal transaction fee to enable this model. Rapido is the pioneer in the bike taxi segment and introduced this concept in the country in 2015. Our disruptive service model has paved a whole new way to travel, with ease and speed, which aims towards building an affordable commuting ecosystem in order to solve Indian mobility issues. Backed by strong tech capabilities and understanding of customer and market needs, today, we are India’s first and largest bike taxi player to be present in close to 100 cities serving over 15 million customers with 15 lakhs+ registered Captains. We have been predominantly focused on the 2W bike taxi under the shared mobility business model but also been operating delivery services for B2B clients for over two years, under the
logistics business. During the lockdown, we launched two new services under the logistics business model - Rapido Local and Rapido Store. Recently, we also announced the launch of Rapido Auto Services pan India, under the shared mobility business model. Q2. In how many cities of UP, you are providing services today? What do you think about the future of your firm in Uttar Pradesh? We are currently present in 20+ cities of UP. We have plans to start our bike taxi service in every tier 2 and 3 cities of the state, with an aim to provide a fast and affordable mode of commute option to the people, that is safe and convenient to access. Q3. Recently, Rapido made a collaboration with Lucknow Metro. Can you please tell something about this collaboration? We recently partnered with Lucknow Metro for providing a lastmile connectivity option to their customers that’s convenient, fast and economical. Passengers can easily book Rapido bike taxi when they de-board from metro trains at any station and can avail the most convenient and economical connectivity even till their doorstep. Moreover, with this special collaboration with Lucknow Metro, there are many benefits like discounts and cashbacks in store for the metro passengers. EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW be available in the city all the time. At every Metro station 15-20 riders will be available at 1-4 minutes of the expected time of arrival (ETA) exclusively for metro passengers. Q4. How will your collaboration with UPMRC help in improving the last mile connectivity in the capital city of Uttar Pradesh? How do you take the move as the state chief of the firm? Rapido bike taxis service will not just be light on everyone's pockets but will also provide a convenient connectivity commute till their doorstep from any Metro station. This partnership between UPMRC & Rapido will enhance mobility by connecting places with the Metro stations & vice-versa. We are hopeful that people will make the best use of this collaboration and we can complement the State's robust public transportation model making it more accessible, affordable and safe.
Q5. The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic is impacting almost every aspect of our life? How has it affected the business of Rapido? Our bike taxi business came to a complete standstill when the country went into lockdown. Backed by our technology prowess, we realised that we still had the potential to maintain business continuity to support the livelihoods of people dependent on Rapido like our Captains and employees. By pivoting our focus on accelerating our existing logistics business model, we delivered essentials through partnership with major retail and ecommerce companies and the Government of Karnataka and Delhi. Currently, post resumption of our services in the Unlock Phase, our business has recovered 55% to its Pre covid levels.
building an affordable commuting ecosystem in order to solve Indian mobility issues. Q8. How did you take the initiative to collaborate with the Lucknow Metro? What are the benefits which you are going to provide to the commuters of Lucknow Metro? Please Explain. The decision to collaborate was very easy as both of us are the fastest and affordable mode of commute for the people in UP. Bike taxis fill the last mile connectivity gap nicely and the metro customers can take a ride till to their doorstep, so the idea arose from there. Currently, we have an offer of up to 40% discount for metro GoSmart card users.
To ensure a quick, safe and cost-effective exchange of essentials amongst users in these challenging times, we extended our logistics offers and launched Rapido Local, a person-to-person delivery service, where customers can request pick up and drop of food, groceries and medicine on the App, from or to another customer and post unlock, we launched Rapido Store, a one-stop solution for all business deliveries.
Q9. What are the different benefits which you are going to provide to the commuters who pay with Go Smart Card of Lucknow Metro? Is Rapido going to start any new venture with other Metro Corporations of the State like Noida Metro? Please express your views.
Q6. How are you going to boost your business in the recent future? Do you think the Pandemic is going to create challenges in the time to come?
Currently, we have an offer of up to 40% discount for metro GoSmart card users. Yes, we are in talks with several metros PanIndia to explore new partnerships. Our aim right now is to get maximum results out of this partnership with UPMRC and approach similar ventures with those results.
Right now, our bike taxi business accounts for 70% and logistics business for 30%. We don’t see a challenge at all maintaining 70% of the bike taxi business because there are enough people coming out and demand for an affordable and safe commute option that is open and easy to avail. Reality is people need to come out maybe to make money by taking their own safety measures but the other side of the story is how will they commute, not everyone has their own vehicle. Bike taxi is a preferable option compared to any other transport and the next option is Auto services. We recently launched Rapido Auto Pan-India, with an aim to offer commuters another safe and affordable option for their everyday commute, apart from our Bike Taxi service. Q7. What are the other cities in Uttar Pradesh which you are focusing on to expand the business? Is Rapido thinking about launching its services in the remotest districts of the state? We want to focus on expanding to cities like Ayodhaya and Haridwar in the upcoming months. Bike Taxi is the only way to sustainable last-mile connectivity. With Rapido, we aim towards

Artificial Intelligence in Indian Railways! To go big on AI, data analytics for operational efficiency In a bid to improve operational efficiency, Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways is set to go big with artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics! To analyze the data generated by Indian Railways, the national transporter has tied up with the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad. Railway Board Chairman V K Yadav was quoted in a PTI report saying that a Centre for Excellence will be set up by Indian Railways in this regard in the next three months. A decision has been taken by the Railway Board to appoint a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) in every zone of Indian Railways. The CTO’s mandate will be to keep a track of emerging technologies in AI and analytics as well as use it in the rail system, Yadav said.
According to the report, the training modules include data science, big data analytics, cloud computing, AI using reinforcement learning as well as AI for autonomous vehicles.
According to Yadav, Indian Railways has train operations-related data, passengerrelated data, freight data and even asset-related data. Now, the national transporter wants to analyze all this data with the help of AI and analytics as well as utilize it in Indian Railways’ Passenger Reservation System (PRS), introduction of new train services and even predictive asset maintenance. Hyderabad’s ISB has been given the task to plan an introductory capacity building program as well as prepare a report on AI’s industrial practices on railway transport and benchmarking. Besides, the ISB will also come up with a report on establishing the centre for excellence along with an advanced capacity building program. Meanwhile, for this purpose, 88 officials have already been trained by Indian Railways over the last two months and such training will also be provided in every zone and division for identified officials.

Cheaper Metro Neo May Replace MetroLite
D
elhi is likely to become one of the first major cities in the country to have a “Metro Neo” corridor, which is a railguided urban transport system with rubber-tyred electric coaches powered by an overhead traction system running on elevated or at-grade sections. The light transit system, which costs about 20-25% of a Metro and also has lower maintenance costs, is likely to come up between Kirti Nagar and Bamnoli near Dwarka, where a MetroLite corridor was proposed last year. “While MetroLite also has a lower carrying capacity compared with Delhi Metro, it is a rail-based system and costs 40% of a Metro system. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had not only prepared a detailed project report (DPR) but also floated tenders for procuring MetroLite coaches”, a news report said.
While the 19km Kirti Nagar-Bamnoli MetroLite project was pegged at Rs 2,673 crore, the cost of a Metro Neo corridor would be around Rs 2,000 crore. The standalone corridor would connect Kirti Nagar interchange station, where Blue (Dwarka-Noida City Centre) and Green (Inder Lok-Brig Hoshiar Singh) lines of Delhi
“For the Kirti Nagar-Bamnoli corridor, a decision was taken by DMRC’s board of directors to explore the possibility of implementing the Metro Neo technology and get a DPR prepared fo r i t ,” M r A n u j D aya l , exe c u t i ve d i re c to r (co r p o rate communications), DMRC was stated saying. “Further modifications may be made to the technical specifications of the rolling stock as well as other allied requirements for this corridor. Therefore, the tender for procurement of 29 MetroLite trains has been cancelled. The tender may be floated again based on changes in technical specifications in the future,” he was further stated saying.
Metro meet with the high-speed Airport Express Line, which is also being extended from Dwarka Sector 21 to Dwarka ECC near Bamnoli.

How Phase-IV of Delhi Metro will Different: Find Details Here
S
ince 1998, when construction of its first phase started, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has always learnt from its mistakes and incorporated changes while executing the next stage. Phase-IV, work on which started late last year, is no different. “DMRC has made an extensive plan for its stations in Phase-IV, apart from other systems. These include a new texture for the building exteriors as the current one peels off and gathers dust. The new stations will have bigger escalators and elevators, improved and energy-eff icient lighting and better airconditioning. A large number of measures are also being taken to make the new stations theft-proof by removing loopholes in the present security measures”, a news agency reported. As part of Phase-IV, DMRC is at present working on three approved corridors — Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg, Aerocity to Tughlaqabad and Maujpur to Mukundpur — with a combined length of 61.6km and 46 stations. A large part of the project cost is incurred on acquiring land. To ensure the minimum possible land requirement for stations in Phase-IV, compact stations have been planned with many utilities and services packed inside smaller spaces. This feat has been achieved at stations like Ashram, where DMRC had faced an acute shortage of land. This experience will be utilised in Phase-IV.

“In the past, cases have been reported of miscreants accessing the viaduct through minor gaps in the structure. Now, the designs will be modified to minimise the gap and make it as theft-proof as possible. These incidents also occur by miscreants using the earthing wire as hand rope to ascend or descend to the target location. Cables will be realigned to curb this situation in future,” the official further added. The official added, “DMRC will install bigger elevators in Phase-IV stations, which will be able to accommodate 20 people instead of the current carrying capacity of 8 to 13. However, elevators at AIIMS, Delhi Gate and Hauz Khas stations can accommodate up to 26 people.” For the first time, DMRC is planning to install escalators in sets of two (one for going up and the other for going down) even at noninterchange stations in Phase-IV. “At present, only major interchange stations like Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Hauz Khas, etc have dual or multiple sets of escalators, which cater to both upward and downward movement simultaneously,” said the official. DMRC plans to install 295 elevators and 644 escalators at its Phase-IV stations. At present, DMRC operates 935 elevators and 1,030 escalators across its 250 stations and other installations.

n a first, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will provide real-time average waiting time at selected busy stations during morning and evening peak hours, in case the waiting time goes beyond 20 minutes. Starting from tomorrow, i.e, 12th November, 2020, the official social media pages/handles of DMRC will post updates on the average waiting time at ten stations during peak hours in the morning (8:30 AM to 10:30 AM) and evening (5:30 PM to 7:30 PM). This initiative is aimed at helping commuters plan their journey effectively so as to avoid long queues at entry/exit. The stations will also sport a different look. “The exterior walls have certain paint textures that tend to peel off and attract dust. Repairs in patches do not match the existing texture. For future stations, smooth finish paints will be opted for the exteriors of the buildings,” a DMRC official was stated saying. Following stations are being covered under this initiative:1. Chandni Chowk 2. Chawri Bazaar 3. Patel Chowk 4. Rajiv Chowk 5. Central Secretariat 6. Huda City Centre 7. Lal Quila 8. Barakhambha Road 9. JLN Stadium
10. Saket The operations staff deployed at these stations will continuously monitor the crowd at these stations during peak hours and assess the waiting time. The same will further be informed to commuters if it goes beyond 20 minutes, through official social media handles/pages of DMRC. In case of any fluctuations in traffic/crowd, the waiting time will be modified accordingly and will be also informed subsequently”, the DMRC said. The selection of these stations and the timings for providing updates has been done on the basis of traffic observed during peak hours. This is being started on an experimental basis and will be considered for implementation on more stations,if required, on the basis of the feedback received from the commuters. Presently, commuters are being permitted into Metro stations only after adhering to prescribed Covid related norms. The number of passengers in the trains has also been restricted to ensure social distancing. DMRC has also advised commuters to keep at least 15-20 minutes extra time for their travel owing to new travel protocols in place which were implemented when the Metro services resumed from 7th September 2020 onwards.

Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS)
Some other DTS technologies also use the Brillouin backscatter (B-OTDR or B-OTDA), which carries strain and temperature information. Such systems are also called DTSS (Distributed Temperature and Strain Sensing). The challenge with these systems is to isolate the fiber from strain to get accurate temperature information. (Reference: AP Sensing)
ATO (Automatic Train Operation) System Compared to ATP, which only controls braking, ATO controls all phases of train operation --- from acceleration to precise stopping. Currently, ATO is installed mostly in monorails and linear metro. Combined with the Platform Gates, ATO helps the train operators to realize driverless operation.
Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS) uses fiber optic sensor cables, typically over lengths of several kilometers, that function as linear temperature sensors. The result is a continuous temperature profile along the entire length of the sensor cable. DTS utilizes the Raman effect to measure temperature. An optical laser pulse sent through the fiber results in some scattered light reflecting back to the transmitting end, where the information is analyzed. The intensity of the Raman scattering is a measure of the temperature along the fiber. The Raman anti-Stokes signal changes its amplitude significantly with changing temperature; the Raman Stokes signal is relatively stable.
Features The system allows for automatic operation of trains, through control of acceleration and braking, including terminal braking at specified station-stop positions using operating management information and location information received from line side equipment. ATO uses an onboard database containing line side data to control train acceleration and braking to suit the relevant conditions (such as grade, for example) at each station. Balises are used to enable interlocking control between the train doors and platform gates. The system is mounted at one end of the train, reducing costs. System Configuration
The position of the temperature reading is determined by measuring the arrival timing of the returning light pulse similar to a radar echo. This method is called Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR). AP Sensing uses its patented Code Correlation OTDR. Coding allows utilization of low optical power, elimination of any problems with laser degradation and enables worry-free, long-term measurement stability.
The train's location as it travels between stations is detected using passive balises. Twoway transmission using active balises at specified station-stop positions provides stationcode information and information to enable interlocking control of platform gates. The onboard equipment is mounted at one end of the train, reducing installation costs.
The DTS Technology is also known as Raman OTDR or Raman OFDR (Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry). The Raman effect is named after the Indian physicist Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman (1888-1970), who discovered that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the deflected light changes in wavelength. This ground-breaking work in the field of light scattering, earned him the Nobel Prize for Physics.

FOCUSED SYSTEM
Automatic train protection (ATP) Automatic train protection (ATP) is a type of train protection system which continually checks that the speed of a train is compatible with the permitted speed allowed by signalling, including automatic stop at certain signal aspects. If it is not, ATP activates an emergency brake to stop the train.[1] ATP systems are now a legacy, defunct technology that has been superseded throughout Europe and internationally by the European Rail Traffic Management System
Automatic Train Supervision [ATS] Simulator Automatic Train Supervision [ATS] refers to a system within an CATC (Continuous Automatic Train Control) system which monitors the system status and provides the appropriate controls to direct the operation of trains in order to maintain intended traffic patterns and minimize the effect of train delays on the operating schedule. This system automatically monitors the entire system and directs train running to provide scheduled service under normal circumstances. It not only facilitates the monitoring of train operations centrally but also facilitates local control from the station if situation so warrants. The Academy has installed ATS simulators for hands on training for Traffic Controllers, Station Controllers, Depot Controllers & Signaling Staff who are responsible for operations and maintenance of train control system. The Academy has three ATS Simulators available each for Alstom, Siemens and Bombardier Signalling Systems. Two more such simulators are upcoming to cater training for Line-7&8 (Phase-III). The primary objective of this simulator is to educate and train the personnel of the DMRC who will be skilled in the operation of Automatic Train Supervision System. ATS simulator is an approximate imitation of the operational ATS system being used in Delhi Metro Rail Corp. Ltd. This simulator is a well-defined description of the simulated Signalling equipment such as Track circuit, Point, Signal and Train etc., and represents their key characteristics, behaviour an d functions.

Advantages Of ATS Simulator System: Simulation can be used when the real system cannot be engaged, because it may not be accessible, or it may be dangerous or unacceptable to engage. Familiarise the trainees with their role during normal circumstances. Acquaint the trainees with the decision-making process in situations of uncertainty and in the presence of confused and inaccurate information. Offer an opportunity to participate in the teaching-learning process based on Hands on Practice approach. It is essentially a dynamic technique, which is based on changing situations and requires flexibility in thought and response, which must be adapted to whatever circumstances exist at a given time. Training activities does not have any impact on the online traffic as it is completely an offline system.
Electronic Interlocking (EI) systems
The System provides all the Interlocking features including Route Setting, Route Release, Point Operation, Track Occupancy Monitoring, Overlap Protection, Crank Handle Operation, Level Crossing Gate Interlocking, and provision for Block working. Central Interlocking Unit (CIU) uses two-out-of-two architecture with two independent channels computing the vital interlocking logic and a supervisory processor monitoring the two vital computing channels. Hot standby with automatic change-over facility is provided. Redundant communication channels to Object Controller (OC) and Panel Processor (PP) are provided through two communication processors. OFC interface with ring configuration is used for communication between CIU and OC and CIU and PP.
FOCUSED SYSTEM
Object Controllers (OCs) control the field gear through fail-safe signaling relays. CIU supports up to 32 OC units. Each OC can handle 24 vital outputs and 40 vital inputs. Each OC has two communication modules for redundancy. Each OC has 8 Wayside Function Modules (WFMs), each capable of handling 8 vital inputs or 8 vital outputs. Smart Trains and Connected Urban Rail with Improved Public Transport and Inclusive Mobility The major problem which our developing cities are suffering from today is the lack of efficient and effective public transport system. The modern cities in India are not modern in planning in any sense. The planning lacks everywhere and can be seen in every aspect of the urban planning, designing and development. There are many problems which a new or existing city experiences today in developing nations like ours. Enhancement of the Urban Transport System will surely result in easy access to transportation to cater to the growing needs of the residents of these cities. There are a lot more factors which may play crucial roles in the development of progressive cities for a developed India which We all have been aspiring for!
interconnected that it is easy for them to transmit data among themselves, which further helps them to manage network control centres effectively, and receiving instructions from control centres. Technology and Artificial intelligence are today playing crucial roles in the enhancement of Urban Transport Systems. As we progress further in future, we will see a whole system being developed not only in the developed nations but also in the developing countries mainly of Asia and Africa.
The industrial “internet of things has had a major impact on the transportation industry, with the advent of autonomous vehicles and improved cargo management. One area that has seen less coverage is the connected railway. "The fact that trains operate at such high speeds through tunnels and extreme weather conditions presents real challenges when it comes to deploying IoT systems. But advances in networking have made smart trains a possibility, and one that could provide significant benefits when transporting goods, providing comfort for passengers and increasing operators’ return on investments", says one expert. As we see today, infrastructure is gradually being replaced by train management systems in which trains become interconnected, which may be called communication hubs. They are then so

velocity for drivers and report speeds back to central control systems. These may reduce the chances of train accidents, and it will further lead to a sharp decline in the number of average rail accidents in any country.
High-speed rail (HSR) is a type of rail transport that runs significantly faster than traditional rail traffic, using an integrated system of specialized rolling stock and dedicated tracks. While there is no single standard that applies worldwide, new lines in excess of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph) and existing lines in excess of 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph) are widely considered to be highspeed. In India, the upcoming AhmedabadMumbai Bullet Train corridor will be 508 km long high-speed train corridor and will be India's first Bullet Train corridor. It will be based on Japan's E5 Shinkansen technology. The ambitious railway project will boast speeds of over 300 km per hour. This is the first of its kind in Indian Subcontinent. What I want to say here is that things are changing today in each and every perspective. The RRTS and High Speed Rails are two different projects which show the progress of our country towards modernization of Urban Transport Systems. As compared to the traditional Rail Systems, the Smart Trains are going to be of great help and use. When we
Furthermore, on-board monitoring systems are interconnected with outdoor signalling systems that can regulate train speeds or even remotely command trains to stop based on track conditions, the positions of switches, the presence of other trains on the track and other factors. This may help in protecting the trains from crashes and derailments once these technologies are brought into use. The Technologies are being developed which will not only help in the vision of running Smart Trains, but these will also provide the efficient, effective and best way of transportation to the cities. The governments are trying to bring more infrastructural projects for providing efficient mode of public transport system in the cities. India is also introducing RRTS System. RRTS is a new, dedicated, high speed, high capacity, comfortable commuter service connecting regional nodes in NCR. According to the NCRTC which is the nodal agency for the development of Delhi -MeerutGhaziabad RRTS project, "RRTS is different from conventional Railway as it will provide reliable, high frequency, point to point regional travel at high speed along dedicated path way". Delhi- Ghaziabad - Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System is an 82.15 km long, underconstruction, semi-high speed rail corridor connecting Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut. RRTS is different from the metro as it caters to passengers looking to travel a relatively longer distance with fewer stops and at higher speed and this will further help in the better travel facilities to the people of Urban Centres of Trade and Commerce. The future indeed seems to be very bright for the urban transport system. Many more Metro Projects are coming up. The concept of Bullet Train is now not unknown to India.
compare the signalling systems, then we find that a lot more things are changing with the advancement in technologies. Signaling systems control the movement of a train by remotely adjusting train speed and braking. More traditional signaling systems are based on radio-frequency identification along the train track, but wireless train to ground signaling is getting more and more common in both railroad and metro systems as of the trends now. The new European high-speed railroads are today equipped with European Train Control System level 2, a signaling standard that requires constant radio communication between the train and the group. These all changes are going to bring a lot of changes in the Public Transport Systems which will not only improve the things but will also help in inclusive mobility and economic growth. The time is set to change and we will see a new dawn of hopes and dreams when these all systems get fully developed and implemented in the Indian Transit System. The hopes will always be there as science is never at rest nor the scientific advancements. I am hopeful that the Indian government work for this cause and the Ministry of Railways bring rapid transformations in the Railway Sector. Although Metro Networks are using many modern technologies, it's a time of upgrading some existing old and traditional practices. I hope we get Smart Trains and adopt these new technologies very soon in the next couple of years.

Technology and Climate Change in Urban Transport Whenever I hear this word 'Climate Change', I remember a very famous sentence:Nature has everything available to Satisfy our Needs but Not Our Greeds. The whole process of global warming and climate change is just a manifestation of human greed. It's the human greed of wealth and money which has turned Earth into a place whose existence itself is in question. The ongoing Pandemic itself is a process which has been caused by many problems created by the world of human beings. Before discussing the various aspects of climate change on Urban Transport System, let's discuss here something about Climate Change, which is becoming a matter of urgent attention today. This is not the first instance of Climate Change today, but the process occurred before as well. Our past few generations have over Exhausted the resources of Mother Earth, which may drive our future generations into trouble.
periods of climatic change, since the mid-20th century, the rate of human impact on Earth's climate system and the global scale of that impact has been unprecedented. With the onset of the Industrial Revolution in Europe, which further increased the pollution level of the cities rapidly made the Introduction of a better Public Transport System inevitable and necessary. As the size of London increased rapidly with huge masses of migrants coming to the city, the first underground Metro System was introduced
When we come to its famous definition, then we see that Climate Change includes a lot of factors. This isn't only a process influenced by human interference, but there are a lot of other factors. This is, however, inevitable today that humans are the one who has critically affected the climate of Earth and henceforth, the process of Climate Change. Climate change includes both the global warming driven by human emissions of greenhouse gases and the resulting largescale shifts in weather patterns. Though there have been previous

Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and all other major Indian Cities have a characteristic feature in common, and that is "The Rising Pollution". We have in all major cities developing Metro Projects, but the rush on the roads is not over. Indeed, it is increasing day by day as time passes and we have no other way than to regret on our conditions. The governments have been doing their work as usual with the public using the same old ways of travelling.
Here, I am explaining it with the example of Mumbai. Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) was the first multi-modal project of its kind in India. It included improving the roads, rail, buses, bridges, and the traffic system of Mumbai. Over 17,000 households - including thousands of squatter families living in shacks along railway tracks – were relocated to safe permanent dwellings and given legal title to their new housing. This whole process was challenging and required tremendous

This new crowd o f c a r ow n e r s h ave n o t o n l y created traff ic p ro b l e m s , b u t t h e y a r e contributing a lot towards the increased carbon emissions. This further enhances the problems with increased h e a t , d ro u g h t and insect outbreaks. These all are linked to climate change which also causes wildfires. These all factors further result into declining water supplies, reduced agricultural yields, health impacts in cities due to heat, and flooding and erosion in coastal areas are additional concerns.
efforts in terms of assessment, building of resettlement sites, consultation, negotiation, relocation, and post-resettlement support.
The traffic which we see in our everyday life is increasing day by day. According to different reports, By 2031, some 600 million people are expected to live in India's cities. However, only about 20 Indian cities with populations over 500,000 have any kind of organized public transport systems. And, only a few can lay claim to a system for mass rapid transit. The share of public transport in large Indian cities declined from 70% in 1994 to almost 40% in 2007. Furthermore, India's accident and fatality rates are among the highest in the world, mainly affecting the poor and vulnerable who do not have their own means of transportation. The scenario has to be changed. A lot of factors need to be replaced as the increasing traffic may increase pollution by a higher level. The increasing problems need to be addressed. The people should be made aware of the fact that the Public Transport System is more secure and safe. Furthermore, the public transport system is more environmentally friendly than private ones.

India's public transport systems are largely run by public sector monopolies. They typically suffer from poor service, inefficient operations, and deteriorating finances, resulting in dramatically declining mode shares. On the other hand, private transportation is often costly, extracting a huge cost from the urban population, especially from the very poor.
Climate Change, Global Warming and greenhouse effect has taken together may create huge problems for the human civilizations in time to come. It's an urgent need of time to address these issues and challenges to make sustainable development look realistic. The people of Urban Centres will play a crucial role in
Things need to be understood in a better and effective way. The people now need to be more aware and responsible for their role. The use of the public transport system needs to be encouraged and adopted by the people. The growing population is in itself a bigger concern and global warming along with climate change, another big issue.
this, and the Urban Transport System will form the backbone of Future India.
The climate change will further influence the climate of individual places, and henceforth, it will further need to make necessary changes in the way of urban transit set up. For example, if flooding becomes a new feature of a City influenced by climate change, the setup and planning of urban transport system, there needs to be changed. In such circumstances, technology will play a vital role in the future of our cities.

Prof. Jan Gehl, Founder and Senior Advisor, M/s Gehl, Mr JeanBaptiste Djebbari, Minister Delegate for Transport, Ministry for the Ecological Transition, Government of France, Dr. Claudia Warning, Director-General GIZ, Shri D S Mishra, Secretary, Housing and Urban Affairs attended the Conference. Besides, senior Officers of the Ministry were also present at the Conference. Addressing the Conference, the Minister said that in the aftermath of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, India is likely to experience a behavioural change in urban mobility. This crisis also presents an opportunity to guide the recovery of urban transport towards long-term development goals. As articulated by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi that the present crisis should be turned into an opportunity to create an 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat', and the time is ripe enough to make bold decisions and investments. To my friends from abroad, Atma Nirbhar Bharat essentially means “self-reliant India”. Investment in infrastructure to address more effective circulation and interchange of people and goods will have an economic multiplier effect — both jobcreation in the present and boosting growth and productivity in the future.
how the nation needs to move ahead in these testing times. It rests on three key pillars, namely, promotion of public transport system, leveraging technological advancements and penetration of NMT systems in the urban transport paradigm. Various studies show that about 16-57% of urban commuters are pedestrian and about 30-40% of commuters use bicycles in the country depending on the size of the city. Considering this as an opportunity, elevating the priority of these modes gives travellers another private vehicle alternative, which is clean, safe, secured particularly if it is integrated with other modes and affordable for all. Non-motorised transport will occupy the prime, nonnegotiable, position in every form of urban mobility discourse and intervention.
