Celebrate Gilroy On the cover of this year’s Best of Gilroy publication is artwork by Roger Ourthiague Jr. titled “Gilroy Risen.” Ourthiague said he created the woodblock relief print, with oilbased ink on rice paper, based on “witnessing the people of Gilroy rise together in response to the tragic shooting in 2019.” “The raised fist is a symbol for progress and healing of this community,” he said. “My favorite part about woodblock printing is the history of the medium. Printing has

created positive social change in countless communities all over the world.” Gilroy is a resilient community, and is filled with people, businesses and organizations that support one another through the best and worst of times. ometimes, all you want is a simple, good, old-fashioned burger. One where you don’t have to tell the server that you want it cooked medium-rare, and worry that they may cook it medium, well-done or *gasp* blue. One where you don’t have to wade through the chef’s overzealous marketing terms to describe their burger (it’s a slab of meat in the shape of a disc, people). No, sometimes you want to walk into a restaurant where the menu is written in simple language, and you know exactly what you’re going to get in the most efficient manner. Brew City Burgers has got you covered. The restaurant, which opened in 2020 at 1425 First St., Suite 101, features the staple cheese burger, complete with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and a special “Brew City Sauce.” For a reasonable $12, you can nab a cheese burger, a generous helping of french fries and a soft drink. Readers have taken notice, voting Brew City Burgers as the place with the Best Burger, French Fries and Salads in Gilroy. Looking to add a little Gilroy to your burger? Try the Gilroy Garlic Burger. Vegans are also welcome, thanks to a certified vegan burger on the menu. With warm tones adding to the atmosphere, highlighted by the brick work and hardwood floors throughout, Brew City Burgers is an inviting place to catch a game or grab dinner inside or out at the patio. fter 45 years, Rosso’s Furniture & Decor went under new ownership in 2023, but brothers Jaime and Anthony Rosso didn’t have to look far to find someone to pass the torch. Jaime’s daughter Sarah Rosso and her business partner Melissa O’Malley took the helm of the longstanding furniture business, with locations in Gilroy and Morgan Hill, and are in the process of a rebirth of the business with a number of new ideas. Rosso said the business’ customer base stretches from south San Jose to Monterey County, as well as Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. “The customer experience is everything to us,” she said. “We want them to feel welcome from the moment they walk through the door to delivery.” Rosso grew up in the business, starting off as a receptionist 27 years ago as a high schooler who did a lot of what she called the “grunt work.”

She took every opportunity she had to learn the ins and outs of the business, shadowing Jaime and Anthony, who opened the store in Gilroy in 1978. She also spent time with the other managers, including Mary Aguire, who Rosso said was a major inspiration for her. Working her way up at Rosso’s Furniture, Rosso said she always had a goal in mind. “Since I was a little girl, I dreamed of becoming the owner one day,” she said. “But did I really believe it would happen?” That dream has now come true. The Rosso brothers are known for being active members in their community, volunteering, sponsoring, donating and advocating for schools, teachers and students alike, and that is something Sarah Rosso said will continue with the new ownership of the business. “Giving back is a big part of who we are,” she said. —Erik Chalhoub

t’s difficult to realize that a door is all that separates The Zen Room from the outside world. The sounds of passing vehicles, smells of nearby restaurants and the often jarring sights of old meets new in the area can be a lot to take in. But as soon as one enters that door into The Zen Room at 7473 Monterey St. in downtown Gilroy, its calming effect is palpable, with the dim lights, burning incense, soft music and gentle imagery all complementing each other to create a world of relaxation. That’s exactly the response owner Dawn Culp is hoping for. “When people walk into this space, I want them to take a deep breath and let their senses remind them of a simple and powerful truth, ‘I’m OK,’” she said. Culp, a Gilroy resident, knows plenty about the fast-paced, stressful world of modern society. She left her corporate career in Silicon Valley to pursue what she

refers to as a calling. People told her she was crazy for passing up a well-paying job to start her business, but she knew she was making the right decision. “My high-tech job was wonderful and taught me a lot, but the fire in my belly wasn’t there,” Culp said. “I wasn’t born to do that job…I knew I needed to be doing something in the wellness field.” The Zen Room’s clientele ranges in age from 7 to 92, according to Culp. Not only do the ages range, but people from all walks of life will walk through the door, including many first responders. Culp said she has a months-long waitlist for new clients looking for private services, which include one-on-one meditation, hypnotherapy, energy work, guided visualization and more. There are other practitioners working alongside Culp with expertise in their own fields such as breath work and trauma relief for PTSD. Group meditations and classes are also available. —Erik Chalhoub

intello Comedy Theater is a place where everyone is known by their first names, and if it’s your first time attending one of their shows, you’ll quickly become friends with the cast and crew. As the doors open, Marion, the Pintello family matriarch, welcomes you to the Gilroy Grange Hall, and as you venture further into the historic building on Swanston Lane, daughter Whitney, a longtime director and performer with the theater group, chats with you as you check in with your tickets. Once you are directed to your seats, which are set up in a cocktailtable format akin to a family living room, head off to the kitchen before the show starts, where Rod, whose crazy idea more than 20 years ago to start the comedic group is still going strong, offers you a wide selection of goodies. For its recent show, “Pumpboys and Dinettes,” guests had the option of eating some delicious apple pie, or as it’s better known in the southern region the performance takes place in, “pah.”

Rod stands guard over a covered cake. This is a treat that will be served after the show to all guests, as a celebration of Pintello Comedy Theater’s 20th anniversary. And as you eat cake after watching a nearly two-hour performance where you won’t be able to wipe the smile off your face, the cast will join in to mingle with the audience. Audience engagement is a big part of Pintello’s shows, with Whitney continuing the longstanding tradition of taking an opening-night photo of the crowd. For ‘Pumpboys,” one lucky audience member won the raffle, where they were escorted on stage in the middle of the show to pick their choice of car air freshener. Of course, while there theoretically were many options, there was really only choice of scent: frog’s butt. It’s this personal, small-town feel of Pintello Comedy Theater that earned the group Best Small Theater Company in Gilroy.
