Despite the ample high quality choices and abundance of beloved local people, businesses, places and institutions, the community of Morgan Hill has voted for their favorites. This week, in this issue, we unveil the winners of the annual Best of Morgan Hill awards.
Readers had the chance to vote for a variety of businesses, organizations and more through an online ballot that featured hundreds of selections in six categories. We received numerous entries,
with the community telling us their favorite places to eat, shop, get their pets groomed, take a walk or have a cocktail. Their choices informed us what they like to do on the weekend, where to spend time with friends and loved ones and much more.

Jackson Academy of Math & Music (JAMM) was voted Morgan Hill’s Best Public School for 2024, and staff at the K-8 school say a big part of its popularity and success are due to a unique curriculum and an active parent community.
“At Jackson Academy of Math & Music (JAMM), we have crafted a one-of-a-kind educational experience,” the school said in a statement. “Our exceptional teaching staff and music department blend the rhythm of music with the precision of mathematics!”
The school is “dedicated to nurturing young minds with a unique focus on math and music, setting the stage for a well-rounded education and a passion for learning in ALL students,” the statement continues.
JAMM’s specialized program provides a comprehensive education by integrating music and math into daily lessons in creative and engaging ways.
Principal Patrick Buchser said on a recent tour of the campus that all 670-plus students at JAMM play a musical instrument as part of their curriculum. Research has shown that playing music helps children’s cognitive development, and teaches them how to work with others and present their work to the community.
“Music makes you smarter,” Buchser said.
Students at JAMM explore complex mathematical concepts through
hands-on manipulatives, teamwork, and academic conversations. “Our approach to learning allows students to grasp challenging concepts with confidence and creativity,” says the school’s statement.
JAMM’s passionate teachers are skilled in their fields and dedicated to fostering a supportive and stimulating environment. They create engaging lessons that meet their students’ needs while reflecting on their teaching practices and student learning to increase student achievement, the school staff added.
JAMM faculty also believe in “nurturing the whole child.” The curriculum supports academic growth while encouraging artistic expression and teamwork, helping students develop analytical and creative skills.
Students at JAMM consistently excel academically and artistically, gaining skills that prepare them for future success in high school and beyond. Graduates are well-equipped for advanced studies and leadership roles, says the school’ statement.
Buchser is proud of the achievement of Best Public School, but he notes that JAMM is one of many impressive schools within Morgan Hill Unified School District.
“I believe in all our schools at MHUSD,” Buchser said.

Saturday mornings are bustling in downtown Morgan Hill, often centering around the weekly Farmers’ Market (Best Farmers’ Market) that takes place on Depot Street. Families, couples and friends enjoy samples of fresh produce from any of the dozens of vendors at the market and gather the fruits and vegetables they want to take home before stepping over to MOHI Farm, Odeum, Running Shop and Hops or other established downtown options for brunch or cocktails. Children are typically crowding the Railroad Park’s vast playground on Depot Street before lunch time.
The Saturday morning Farmers’ Market also features weekly entertainment. On Aug. 17, Campbell-based singer-composerguitarist Nancy Blue took the spotlight on the edge of the rows of market vendors.

Farms is one of dozens of vendors that frequent the Morgan Hill Farmers’ Market every Saturday, 9am-1pm on Depot Street.

Each Saturday, at least 35 vendors at the Morgan Hill market offer not only the freshest seasonal produce from throughout the region; many vendors also offer handmade baked goods, homeprocessed fruit products; and a variety of salsas and dips. Some spend their morning creating unique bouquets of fresh-cut flowers.
The market takes place from 9am-1pm every Saturday, in the Depot Street parking lot at Third Street.
For the late summer season, peaches, plums, berries and eggplant have been abundant among the market’s produce vendors. Late-season heirloom tomatoes occupied some vendors’ tables.
A watermelon festival took place Aug. 24 at the Morgan Hill Farmers’ Market, featuring a melon eating contest, kids’ activities and an interactive cooking class.
“Often fruits and vegetables were picked just hours before the farmers’ market opens, and have traveled less than fruits and vegetables traveling through the conventional wholesale channel to the grocery stores,” reads the Morgan Hill Farmers’ Market website. “The fruit offered at farmers’ markets is sweeter because it has higher sugar content because it has ripened on a tree instead of a truck/train or shelf. Talk to your favorite farmers about their harvest techniques, their favorite family recipes and their special heirloom seeds handed down through generations.”
