The 41st annual Gilroy Garlic Festival returns to Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy July 26-28. As it’s become well-known for, the festival features three days of garlic concoctions (garlic ice cream, anyone?) and sizzling competitions.

The festival is staying open an hour later on July 27, perfect for the concert featuring Grammy Award-winner Colbie Caillat and her band Gone West.

Three days of non-stop garlic action awaits visitors to the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Garlicky goodness Gilroy Garlic Festival turns on the heat for 41st annual event

sk anybody who is even remotely familiar with Gilroy, and chances are they will bring up garlic. Clichéd, maybe, but for good reason.

Nashville-based band Gone West. Caillat’s performance marks the first time a Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter will perform at the festival.

“It’s very exciting to present world-famous musicians of this caliber,” festival president Shawn Keck said. “We can’t wait to hear Colbie Caillat featuring Gone West live on the Amphitheater Stage. The festival benefits many community non-profits, and we know this addition will make an even bigger impact.”

Hailing from Malibu, Caillat has released six albums, including her 2007 double-platinum debut album Coco. She has sold more than six million albums and over 10 million singles worldwide.

With Saturday typically being the busiest day of the festival, Bowe said this year the festival grounds will remain open an hour later than usual, closing at 8pm. ➝ 8

Gilroy may be known as the “Garlic Capital,” but it only grows about 300 acres of the bulb. However, it earns its title thanks to the fact that most California garlic is processed in Gilroy, and Christopher Ranch, which produces nearly half of the nation’s garlic, is based here.

If that wasn’t enough, Gilroy hosts an annual garlic festival, one of the largest festivals in Santa Clara County.

The 41st annual Gilroy Garlic Festival is set for Christmas Hill Park July 26-28, featuring three days filled with garlicky treats, spicy contests and hot entertainment.

Executive director Brian Bowe said organizers have secured a number of new additions to the lineup as the festival enters its 41st year.

“We are always trying to reimagine things,” he said.

Perhaps the largest of them all is the headliner on July 27: Colbie Caillat with her new

“We want attendees to stay when it’s a little cooler in the evening,” he said. “It stays plenty light for us.”

A new signature cocktail, named the Whiskey Daisy, will be available at the festival.

There will also be celebrities aplenty.

The Challenge Butter Cook-Off Stage will welcome James Beard Award-winning chef, restaurateur and Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio on July 27, when he will host the Great Garlic Cook-Off. On July 26, MasterChef Season 9 winner Gerron Hurt will host both the Champions for Charity and Garlic Chef Jr. (for young chefs ages 9-18) cooking competitions.

Real Housewives of New Jersey star and cookbook author Teresa Giudice will prepare some of her family’s favorite Italian dishes on Saturday afternoon. And on July 28, Alexander La Motte, executive chef at Rosewood CordeValle Resort in San Martin, will preside over the Garlic Showdown, in

which professional chefs battle for a cash prize.

Tickets for the popular Caltrain Garlic Train (running on Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28) will include connecting trips to as far north as San Francisco at no additional charge.

“That is one of the greatest ways to get to the Garlic Festival,” Bowe said.

Bowe said most festival attendees come from within a three-hour radius of Gilroy. Also new this year, the three-day pass to the festival can now be purchased by everybody, not just Gilroy residents.

More than 4,000 volunteers, mostly from Gilroy, work on behalf of more than 150 non-profit groups in the South Valley. Volunteering at the Garlic Festival has become somewhat of a fact of life for Gilroyans, many of which participate throughout the generations.

“It’s an incredible formula we have here in Gilroy,” Bowe said.

“People here in Gilroy are raised to be a part of this event. It’s in

people’s blood to be a part of the Garlic Festival.”

The festival’s beginnings were in 1978, when Rudy Melone, then the president of Gavilan College, read an article about a town in France that claimed to be the “Garlic Capital of the World” when it hosted its own garlic festival. Melone, a Gilroy resident, knew that claim wasn’t true, and set about bringing such an event home.

He eventually convinced Christopher Ranch owner Don Christopher to hold a garlic dinner at his Bloomfield Ranch in August 1979, with the garlic-laden food cooked by Val Filice.

Not expecting a large crowd, the organizers were stunned when 5,000 people showed up. They knew they had a hit, and the festival has continued every year since.

Since that fateful day in 1979, an estimated 4,482,259 people have attended the Garlic Festival. The attendance in 2018 topped out at 80,646.

In 2018, the Gilroy Garlic

Festival Association announced distributions totaling $255,000 to 170 different charities and non-profit organizations, bringing the 40-year total to more than $11.7 million.

In the Volunteer Equity Program, instituted by the Garlic Festival founders in 1979, net proceeds from the three-day event are distributed to local schools, sports teams, non-profit groups and service organizations based on the number of hours logged at the festival by the volunteers representing those organizations.

For 2018, the top five beneficiaries were: Live Oak Emerald Regime ($11,788); Gilroy High School football ($8,601); Victory Outreach ($8,580); Christopher High School CAT Boosters ($7,474); and Gilroy Gators Swim Team ($7,346). More than $90,000 was raised by volunteers working on behalf of Gilroy Unified School District groups and organizations.

‘Zippy’ garlic recipe one of eight in 2019 cook-off

hen Ellen Rivera-Craddock saw her neighbor’s grandson compete on stage as a junior chef at last year’s Gilroy Garlic Festival, she thought to herself, “I make a great sauce; I could do that.”

On Saturday, July 27, the 25-year Gilroy resident will get her chance, as one of eight contestants—and the only one from Gilroy—in 41st annual Great Garlic Cook-Off on center stage at the 2019 festival.

“One of my New Year’s resolutions last year was to learn how to make sauces,” the bookkeeper and amateur chef said. “The sauce really makes the meal.”

Husband Greg Craddock and 18-year-old son Ryan Rivera sampled her “Zippy sauce” for weeks, as she perfected it for the competition.

One hour on stage Rivera-Craddock has to duplicate her sauce from scratch in one hour, with seven other contestants under the glare of the festival spotlight in the now-famous cooking amphitheater at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy, preparing their own original recipes for the chance to win a $3,000 prize and the coveted garlic crown. The Gilroyan’s offering will be a Ribeye Triple Garlic Coconut Rice Bowl with Zippy Sauce.

This year, half of the finalists hail from California, including Rivera-Craddock: Robyn Price from Brea, CoCoa-Coffee Crusted Garlic and Bacon Cheesecake with Caramel Drizzle; Emily Falke from Santa Barbara, Chilies en Nogada with Roasted Garlic Walnut Sauce; Merry Graham from Newhall, Garlicky BBQ Pork Fluffy Japanese Pancake with Strawberry Sriracha Syrup.

The Great Garlic Cook-Off recipe contest has been an annual tradition since the very first Gilroy Garlic Festival in 1979. Each recipe must contain at least six cloves of garlic. Each of the dishes will be judged on flavor, texture, creativity, appearance and use of garlic.

Rivera-Craddock admits she is a huge fan of Top Chef head judge Tom Colicchio, who will host this year’s Gilroy cook-off at the Challenge Butter Cook-Off Stage.

In addition to Colicchio, the other judges include Jason Ryczek from Farallon Restaurant, San Francisco; Adam Sanchez, owner/chef of Gilroy’s Milias Restaurant and a previous cook-off winner; Maurizio Cutrignelli of Osteria al Mare in Monterey and Maurizio's in Morgan Hill; Mark Segovia of Segovia Catering in Gilroy; and Diana Phipps from L'Aubergine Restaurant in Carmel.

Garlic Chef Junior Last year’s inaugural Garlic Chef Jr. cooking competition was a big success, so youngsters will be back to do battle at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Friday, July 26. Eight aspiring chefs, ages 10-15, will be preparing their own original recipes on the Challenge Butter Cook-Off Stage for a prize worth $500.

Hosted by MasterChef Season 9 winner Gerron Hurt, the event requires each contestant to create an original baked or grilled dish containing at least six cloves of garlic.

Five of the young chefs are from Gilroy: Kaiden Gonzelez, Maya Torres, Rayen Garcia, Sandra Jissel Martinez and Winston James.

T

he third time was definitely a charm for proud Gilroy native Kylie Kuwada, who is already enjoying the special moments since being crowned the Garlic Queen of the 41st annual Gilroy Garlic Festival in May. For the Christopher High School alumna (class of 2016) and former Christopher Ranch employee, the opportunity to represent the Garlic Capital is one she will hold dear to her heart.

“It’s been great to be able to represent Gilroy so far,” said the 20-year-old Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo senior who enjoyed being part of Gilroy’s Memorial Day Parade and taking her royal court of nine pageant winners on a tour of Christopher Ranch. “It’s been really, really awesome. A lot of my duties haven’t even started yet.

That comes at the Garlic Festival.”

During the festival at Christmas Hill Park, Kuwada will greet festival-goers, hand out cooking competition hardware, make appearances on music stages and be the ultimate ambassador for her hometown.

“As the queen and court, we walk around the festival and get to interact with the patrons,” Kuwada said. “That’s my favorite part.”

Kuwada, daughter to Christopher High School Assistant Principal Eric Kuwada and CHS school counselor Marah Kuwada, won the Garlic Queen pageant on her third and final attempt.

“Getting up on stage during the crowning, I didn’t have any expectations of winning. I enjoyed every moment of the pageant. I put my best foot forward. I was excited for any one of us to win,” said Kuwada, who had previously been a member of the queen’s court. “I was completely shocked. I feel so lucky and humble.

We all could have won. It’s such an amazing, competitive group.”

Kuwada got a taste of representing her hometown while in high school when she was one of eight students selected as an ambassador for the Gilroy-Takko Student Exchange Program. In that capacity, she visited Takko-Machi, Japan.

“That’s what made me really want to be queen. I really enjoyed being an ambassador for Gilroy while I was in Japan,” Kuwada said.

“I really enjoyed representing Gilroy. I know that small-town feeling and how special it is. Going away to SLO, I got an even stronger appreciation of Gilroy and how special it is.”

Growing up in the Garlic Capital, Kuwada has fond memories of attending the Garlic Festival with family and friends.

“I’ve definitely attended the festival my whole life. I lived close enough to walk,” said Kuwada, who also volunteered in several capacities including a memorable post in the famed Gourmet Alley. “Being in high school and growing up in Gilroy, you would volunteer for your organization or club and the festival would give back.”

Kuwada was awarded the $1,000 top prize from the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association as well as a $10,000 scholarship from Christopher Ranch.

Chloe Crossman is first prize winner in design contest STAFF REPORT

S

outhern California resident Chloe Crossman won the Gilroy Garlic Festival’s nationwide contest to create an official poster design for the 2019 event.

Crossman won the $500 prize for her poster design, which came in first place. The design will be sold on souvenir items throughout the three-day festival.

All designs were voted on by the Garlic Festival Association.

This will be Crossman’s first year attending the festival as a native of Oakland who now lives in Gardena in Southern California.

According to a press release from the Garlic Festival, Crossman’s inspiration was to “create something fun and fresh that focused on the beauty of garlic flowers and also captured the spirit of the Gilroy Garlic Festival.”

Second-place winner William Harris of Maricopa, Ariz. and

third-place winner Priscilla Martinez of Watsonville were awarded $250 and $100, respectively, for their submissions. Copies of all winning posters will be available for sale at the Garlic Mercantile Store at the festival.

Crossman’s design will be on Garlic Festival merchandise. She told the association in a press release, “I’m really excited to eat as much garlic as I can.”
