SHOP LOCALLY, BRING ON THE SMILES

Sure, shopping on the Internet seems convenient: you don’t even have to leave your house.

But, face it, online shopping is like fast food or like giving someone a pat on the shoulder instead of a hug.

And it doesn’t help the community. It only helps a tech bro buy more yachts or rockets.

How about starting your resolutions early this year by shopping locally and boycotting the online billionaires?

We know it can be a challenge sometimes to find the best things in person, so we’ve sent our intrepid team of writers out to find the best gifts for your

Plus, face it, this is the time of year that shopping is made for. People are in good spirits; they smile and talk and get you in the happy holiday mood.

So, enjoy our locals-only guide and have the best holidays!

Reading is a great way to exercise one’s imagination, and take flights of fancy to other worlds and dimensions. Luckily in Santa Cruz we have some amazing repositories of time-traveling devices, aka books. The godfather, Bookshop Santa Cruz has been around for over 50 years and is intergenerationally family owned. With a wide array of signed novels, author events and tchotchkes, it’s a great environment to let your mind wander.

Two Birds Books in Capitola is an intimate experience with knowledgeable owners who can help you find what you need (and what you might not know you need). Bad Animal, in downtown Santa Cruz, not only serves food and drink but also contains a fine collection of the rarest books in town. You can always get gift cards, but these three books will satisfy the pickiest reader. DNA

Chocoholic

Indulge your favorite chocolate lover this holiday season with delectable offerings from local Santa Cruz shops. Each one offers delightful creations that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.

Mackenzie's Chocolate shop is a place Willy Wonka could only dream of. Known for his exquisite chocolate sculptures, Ian Mackenzie has crafted everything from a towering chocolate Eiffel Tower to a sleeping chocolate cat curled up on a chocolate bed. This is Mackenzie’s last Christmas, as the shop will be closing on Christmas Eve after nearly 40 years.

Chocolate Yule Logs, filled with assorted chocolates, suit every budget and appetite.

At Chocolate, our chocolate-themed restaurant on Pacific Avenue, create your own boxed Chocolate Truffle assortment of rich and velvety flavors that will delight any chocolate connoisseur. Choose from Bittersweet, Coconut, Dark or white Rose, Fresh Mint, Hazelnut, or Mocha flavors. Or, give the gift of a hot chocolate on a wintry evening by treating with a gift card.

Enjoy a trip to the wharf to shop for chocolates at Marini's, where you’ll find a favorite fudge, truffle or bark, waiting to be boxed.

For a savory twist on a classic favorite, try their chocolate-covered bacon. The salty-sweet combination is a perfect treat for adventurous palates. JK

Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting has over 40 years of roasting experience, and they offer a variety of premium, freshly roasted, fair-trade organic beans that are sure to impress even the most discerning coffee connoisseur. A favorite of regulars is Steve’s Smooth French, a lighter-roasted dark brew with a complex finish. A popular medium roast is Santa Cruz Full City, for a spicier cup.

Verve Coffee Roasters is known for their sustainable and ethical sourcing practices. Great gift ideas from Verve include a variety of coffee subscriptions and gift sets that will keep the coffee lover in your life well-caffeinated all year long. Gift a Roasters Choice Single Origin subscription or choose from Verve’s varied bean offerings with bags delivered monthly in the size you choose.

Lulu Carpenter’s is a cozy cafe in a historic building. Like all of our local coffeehouses, they offer gift cards in any amount, perfect for treating your giftee to one of Lulu’s flavored lattes—Mocha Diabla or Whiskey Latte anyone?—and in-house-baked pastries, or a hot brunch prepared to order. Lulu’s roasts their own at their Mission Street location. Barista Ana recommends a 12-ounce bag of Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. JK

Whether it’s a Secret Santa situation or a desire to spread a little unexpected holiday cheer at the office, sometimes you need to get a gift for someone you don’t know very well. Sure, you could resort to a Target gift card, but why not support a local business instead?

One of life’s simple pleasures is a new pair of socks—still stretchy and soft, heels and toes intact. As with any footwear needs, the place to visit is the Sockshop & Shoe Company, with locations on Pacific Avenue. Aptos Village and the Santa Cruz Wharf. If holiday socks are too corny (though who wouldn’t want Antler Pug or Raptor Claus socks?), other options abound: plain or patterned, garish or dainty, in-your-face funny or gently silly.

Just down Pacific Avenue you can pick up a colorful keepsake Surf City Santa Cookie Tower at Pacific Cookie Company designed by Jimbo Phillips. A seasonal combo of ginger spice and dark chocolate cranberry cookies could cheer up the whole office. Other culinary options could involve a gift certificate at a locally owned restaurant. Maybe a place out on the water, like Makai Island Kitchen or the Crow’s Nest, or a more casual favorite in their neighborhood, like Kaito in Capitola, Cafe Cruz in Soquel or Walnut Avenue Cafe in downtown Santa Cruz.

Or feed the mind instead with another tried-andtrue holiday treat: a pair of tickets to Santa Cruz Shakespeare’s production of A Christmas Carol. SS

If you are shopping for a furry friend this year (or a friend who’s got one), look no further than Pet Pals Discount Pet Supply. From brand-name pet food to cat toys and doggie beds, the warehouse store caters primarily to cats and dogs, but also supplies provisions for birds, rabbits, guinea pigs and fish. A vast dog toy aisle includes Hugglehounds toys, Aspen dog beds, crate pads and more. The “cat room” features brands Spot and Kong toys, scratch pads, cat trees and furniture. The best-selling cat toy is Da Bird, with feathers weaved in such a way that it looks and sounds like a real bird in flight, said Michael, one of the store managers. As for local brands, Kitty Weed is a Santa Cruz company that makes The Fatty and The Bigger Fatty catnip toys wrapped in linen and hemp that look like doobies.

Just down the road is General Feed & Seed Co, Inc., whose warehouse includes a full tack shop for equestrians and ranchers, but the barn also stocks premium dog and cat food, economy wild bird seed, alfalfa and other hays for smaller animals. Golden Pet Life treats are available in three flavors, and cats will love the handmade, organic catnip socks from Storey Road Farms in Corralitos.

With locations in Freedom and Santa Cruz, Wishbone Pet Company has everything a fur baby could desire, from treats and travel gear to grooming supplies, health and wellness products, and more. Wishbone stocks nourishment for your canine pals from Acana, Answers, Bocce's Bakery, Diamond Pet Food and more. Hiker

The importance of getting water on the hiking trail is just slightly below the importance of getting air. You can set your hiking buddy up with a Platypus QuickDraw 1 Liter Filter System. It has a tri-layer film dirty reservoir and an easy-fill easy wide mouth opening, a fill handle, and is super durable and packable. Your hiker also needs gear. For caving or nightwalking, there’s the Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp, which runs on alkaline batteries for a long expedition. Finally, longtime hikers seem to eventually use trekking poles; it saves their knees. REI has a remarkable wall of trekking poles, from the high-end Black Diamond Alpine Carbon Cork poles ($199.95) to the moderately priced single Mountainsmith Dolomite Trekking Pole with cork and rubber grip material, an aluminum shaft that weighs 1.25 pounds. Poles vary, and your gift recipient may be inspired to try out trekking poles personally. RS

Gifts for the Home Chef

Our Toys“R”Us store is sadly long gone, but in its old location is CHEF’STORE. A cross between Safeway and Costco with no membership fees, it’s a toy store for foodies and a great source for affordable kitchen accessories. A serious chef's knife is a must-have for any home cook, and a great choice is the set of two Zyliss Santoku knives ($20). Santoku means “three virtues,” so named for its versatility, and it’s the preferred knife for many chefs for its ease of handling. A versatile Dutch oven is a kitchen workhorse beloved by all chefs, perfect for braising, baking, and more. At Toque Blanche, discover a variety of sizes and colors at this well-stocked shop, from the colorfully enameled, pricier Le Creuset ($419) to a cast-iron Lodge ($89) for equal value on a budget. No dish is complete without the right condiments. At Shopper’s Corner, browse and assemble a gift basket from a wide selection of gourmet sauces to take any meal to the next level. For your home chef who loves to bring the heat, a minicollection of California-made hot sauces awaits your selection, including Willy Willy’s Sexy Sauce ($10), made here in Santa Cruz, and California-made La Pistola Smoked Strawberry Habanero sauce ($8) JK

Homesteader

Looking for something to delight a Santa Cruzan who’d rather be off the grid? Think about durability, waste reduction and energy efficiency—and that means putting time (and money) into finding just the right thing. One way to warm their hearts (and the rest of their bodies) would be with heating systems that save energy, such as a pellet stove from Woodstove & Sun. According to the Department of Energy, “pellet stoves are the cleanest solid fuel, residential heating appliance.” Models can be freestanding, or inserts for wood-burning fireplaces.

Your homesteader will appreciate gifts that add to the sustainability of the home, from big-ticket items like flooring (Interior Vision Flooring and Decorating offers a robust assortment of eco-friendly flooring, from wool rugs to cork flooring) to low-budget recycled home goods from antique stores. The Abbot’s Thrift, for instance, stands out for its vintage technology, such as antique rotary phones, stereo systems and tape recorders—not to mention kitchen appliances, which were once upon a time built to last.Another way to reduce waste is to spruce up household items rather than replace them. To help in this endeavor, American Leisure Patio offers custom-made cushions and cushion repair, with a large selection of colors and fabrics to choose from. SS

Gifts for the

Jewelry Junkie

For the true collector, there’s no such thing as too much jewelry. To paraphrase Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, we just love finding new places to wear diamonds. And though sparklers might be a girl’s best friend, they’re not for everyone, so it pays to look around for just the right style to bedazzle one’s beloved.

First, an item from Super Silver, selected to soothe those worried about what might befall us after the last election: a Tiny Evil Eye Charm, designed to “guard against the malevolent,” ward off negativity and bring good fortune.

Speaking of calming vibes, here’s another suggestion: Howlite earrings by Maya Bauman, available from Pacific Trading Co.; the white stone, lined with black veins, promotes feelings of calm.

DELL WILLIAMS

1320 Pacific Ave., Santa Cruz 831-423-4100

dellwilliams.com

Also on Pacific Avenue, Dell Williams has been in the local jewelry scene since 1927. Its sparkling windows showcase the work of many well-known designers, including the late Alex Sepkus, whose exquisite pieces evoke the beauty of a Klimt painting. And if nothing is quite right, Dell Williams can help shoppers contact one of the designers for custom requests—or the store’s master jeweler can whip up something to order. Shoppers further south who want to design their own gift item could look to Ideal Jewelry. The family-run jewelry boutique has been operating since 1991 and prides itself on its in-house jeweler and low markups on its stock of adornments and watches.

And don’t neglect the wealth of vintage baubles in Santa Cruz County’s secondhand stores. If you’re looking for Victorian cameos, Miss Jessie May’s offers a well-organized assortment of estate pieces—as well as costume jewelry and an assortment of collectibles and ephemera from eras gone by. On the Eastside there’s Carolyn’s Non-Profit Thrift Shop, which sells donated items to raise money for groups that help families and always has an array of unique pieces. Seen on social media recently: an eye-catching “clock tower” shaped like a Christmas tree and covered with donated watches and trinkets. SS

DONATION TO THE WALLACE J. NICHOLS MEMORIAL FUND

gofundme.com/f/ Nichols-memorial-fund

Support the Santa Cruz coastline and delight the ocean enthusiast in your life with a gift from the Seymour Marine Discovery Center. This nonprofit relies on membership revenue to maintain its exhibits, preserve its stunning coastal property, and fund essential ocean research. Every membership funds work that protects our blue planet.

Zen Island’s beach-themed soy candles bring the sea to your space with their clean-burning, ocean-inspired scents. Hand-poured right here in Santa Cruz, these candles add a gentle glow and a hint of salty breeze to any room. Another decorative touch that is also informative is the Wave Clock, which has three faces on its front, showing wave height and period in feet, tide height in feet and rising or falling trend, and real-time updates for coastal locations throughout the United States.

The Whale and Calf Women’s T-Shirt by the kind and talented late Doug Ross is a heartfelt tribute to his love for the ocean and its magnificent creatures. The shirt features the artist’s signature style illustration of a whale and her calf, showcasing the tenderness of their bond and the beauty of marine life.

No tribute to the ocean lover would be complete without honoring the legacy of local scientist, author and activist Dr. J. Nichols. His work in ocean conservation lives on through his nonprofit organizations, which are dedicated to protecting and celebrating our seas. Consider giving a donation to support ocean preservation directly. Or purchase the groundbreaking book Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do. EB

Whether the cyclists on your shopping list sport a mountain trail climber, modern road rider or vintage townie, Santa Cruz’s friendly bike shops have what they need. In business for more than 40 years, Spokesman Bicycles has a custom line of Spokesman jersey shirts, apparel, shorts and water bottles. As winter approaches, Spokesman offers rain jackets and thermal layering pieces.

Santa Cruz Cycle Sport recommends its Spurcycle bells and Moved By Bikes surfboard racks. Based in Marin, Spurcycle bells are known for their “nice quality and a loud, long ring,” says Jeremy Schloss, SCCS employee.

Over on the westside, Epicenter Bicycle Shop employee Dylan Joedicker suggests new helmets, lights and multi-tools. Epicenter’s full helmet line includes Trek, Bell, Giro, Fox Racing and Bontrager. “Daytime running lights are great too,” Joedicker said. For the techie on your list, Epicenter sells a Trek Ion 200 RT/ Flare Light Set. “They are relatively low lumens so you have a very narrow band, and you can be seen right away,” Joedicker says.

Another Bike Shop’s Norton recommends wireless helmet and handlebar lights, head lights, tail lights, OneUp EDC tire pumps and Wooly Booly socks. Timber Bolt-On and QR (quick-release) model mountain bike bells have both a stealth mode and a friendly ring mode for “trail awareness when you need it, silence when you don’t.” KM

The holidays are a time of generosity—hopefully not just for the loved ones on your list, but also for less fortunate strangers. The Homeless Garden Project employs unhoused trainees who work for a year, learning the seasonal patterns of agriculture like planting cover crops and letting the soil rest to allow the nitrogen to build. When they’re not on the farm, they weave wreaths and mash strawberries for jam, two items among many available for purchase come December at their various storefronts.

There are other organizations where strangers helping strangers is the business model. For Grey Bears, the motto is “seniors helping seniors,” and they believe that no one should have an empty holiday table. With more than 500 volunteers, the thrift store accepts donations year-round that fund Grey Bears’ Healthy Food Program, which provides bagged produce and pantry staples as well as daily hot meals to seniors. Visit that campus Nov 29 for “Grey Friday,” when all gifting materials will be 50% storewide.

Locals can participate in their holiday card drive from now until Dec. 17 by dropping off non-religious cards with your sweetest inscriptions to show our elders we’re thinking about them.

Of course, seniors aren’t the only ones who deserve hot meals and warm recognition. The Teen Kitchen Project delivers medically tailored meals to low-income clients in crises of health. They gain real world experience that glows on résumés (Alderwood and other restaurants have been known to poach program staff) and get to see where food service meets acts of service.

For the holiday season, Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz County partners with 32 local nonprofits and social service agencies to meet the needs of local families. These groups provide the Volunteer Center with a short bio about each family and a wish list of gifts for each family member. Sponsors provide families with holiday packages, delivered Dec. 7–10 to the Volunteer Center’s donation center at the Capitola Mall. SR

One of the best things about the holidays is gathering friends and family together for a sumptuous meal. In a foodie paradise like Santa Cruz, there are plenty of savory options for the outdoor cook in the family.

Old school and classic, Freedom Meat Lockers is now accepting holiday orders for prime rib, roasts and turkeys. The family-owned and operated butcher shop and deli sells a delicious marinated skirt steak, tri-tip, in-house sausages, sauces and rubs. While you’re shopping, order yourself a custom sandwich with high-quality meats from their deli made or their famous Bavarian cheese sausage.

Point Butcher Shop has a nice selection of gourmet meats including Certified Prime Angus Beef® rib roast and Prime filet mignon along with specialties like the Bloody Mary Skirt Steak and Marinated Black Pepper Hangar Steak. The famous Prime Angus Tomahawk is bone-in ribeye; the bone is left attached so you can use it as a handle to eat cavemanstyle. Point also makes more than a dozen in-house, hand-crafted sausage varieties. For seafood, they offer a rotating selection such as local cod, Alaskan halibut, King salmon from New Zealand, Ahi tuna from Tahiti, East Coast swordfish, and fresh, local catch. “We always try to have something local,” said Nathan Vanderpool, meat apprentice. “We usually put new fish on the counter every day, or every other day.”

Point Butcher Shop is now accepting Christmas orders including prime rib, rack of lamb and spiral hams; Use the QR code online at pointbutchershop.com.

With six locations in Santa Cruz County, don’t overlook Ace Hardware when it comes to barbecue tools and accessories for your favorite outdoor cook. The Aptos store stocks Grill Mark woks, grill toppers and cooking grids, along with Weber tool sets, grill covers, thermometers and marinade injectors. A profuse selection of provisions includes Bone Suckin’ Sauce, Jack Daniels Beef Rub, BBQ Spot’s 3-pack of Smokin’ Booty Rubs for $19.99. KM

Recovering Politico

Everybody knows somebody who spent the last few months glued to cable news shows, podcasts and social media, trying to anticipate who would be controlling the federal government in 2025. That’s done and dusted now, and these folks need some serious detox time. The following experiences should fully occupy their minds and bodies.

One option: get out in the water and feel the rhythm of the tides instead of the election cycle. Take a wine-fueled Chardonnay Sailing Cruise, or venture into one of the finest wetlands in Central California on an Elkhorn Slough Safari.

For friends who prefer more cerebral attractions, get them a gift certificate for Game Santa Cruz, a “Games and Merriment Emporium” in downtown Santa Cruz that hosts game events and sells various accouterments that will help while away time. Others may need physical intervention to rid themselves of stress. A hyperbaric oxygen therapy might help the body repair and regenerate. Or a Thai herbal poultice, combining warm compresses with massage techniques, could ease tension and impart a feeling of well-being. SS

Stoner

If you have a loved one who smokes so much weed, they cough chronically, doctors will say they should stop burning flower and get a vaporizer. My ladylove gave me a Ditanium Vaporizer, it’s the best cannabis delivery system I’ve ever used. Priced at $299 plus tax—yikes, I know, but if you can afford it, it is one healthy gift for a dedicated stoner. I use it daily and I don’t cough anymore. Check it out at planetofthevapes.com. There are other flower vaporizers that are cheaper and work well; for me the Ditanium is the best. Here’s some sativa flower I really like that is dirt cheap. It’s called Chem Dawg, by Wave RiderNursery in Monterey, with 27.5% THC. Santa Cruz Naturals is selling their 3.5 mg packet for $10.50— great for creativity, a fine sativa high, priced crazy low. The ultimate ingestion delivery of cannabis for lung health is an edible. I recently tried Classic Lemonade from Almora. They claim it’s made from freshly squeezed lemons and cannabis extract; it worked for me. Three Bros Santa Cruz is selling a 12 oz. bottle (100 mg of THC) for $12.99. RS

Strummer

If you live in Santa Cruz, chances are you’ve been exposed to more people strumming acoustic instruments in your lifetime than is recommended. From dreadlocked janglers lining Pacific Avenue to bonfire balladeers in the summer, you probably know someone who is “really good, I promise!” Joking aside, this town has vibrant local shops where you can pick up some accessories for your favorite strummer. A shark-shaped capo will resonate with any Surf City picker as they hit a sweet note while looking over West Cliff. And for the serious bluegrass or jazz student, a specially crafted pick made out of industrial-grade plastic might make all the difference to elevate their playing. Or maybe you want to surprise an aspiring player with a nice entry-level acoustic guitar. Here are some shops you can show love to this holiday season. JM

DIAGNOSTIC & VIRAL SWEEP/ OPTIMIZATION PACKAGES

Tech is the gift you have to keep on giving. As soon as you buy something, its 2.0 release is imminent. Looking for something for the Luddite in your life that won’t chain them to Geek Squad visits with agents of varying skill and patience? Several local businesses can help.

Windt Audio Video Solutions, a 36-year Santa Cruz mainstay, offers mobile consultations to trick out or troubleshoot home theaters. They can custom-tailor a setup from scratch, purchasing price-competitive TVs, components, and smart devices on your behalf, or upgrade an existing system, beefing up wireless signals with mesh WiFi and eliminating that knot of cables in the speaker cabinet. Perfect for the cinephile who prefers the home experience over patronizing theaters.

For the DJ gearhead on your list, Santa Cruz Tech Exchange has a formidable online marketplace. High-end digital turntables, 4-channel mixers, interfaces, MIDI keyboards— peep it all at their website, then swoop it at their Westside location.

When tech breaks down, a phenomenon as reliable as the rising sun, turn to Pleasure Point Computers and pay only for services rendered rather than services attempted. They abide by a “no fix, no pay” policy like the most ethical car and bike mechanics, providing an itemized invoice before they do anything, so you don’t commit over your head when a simple replacement would’ve been the better move. It’s time to treat that ancient (read: 3-yo) laptop or desktop to a wash and get that new car smell back.

Surfer

Surfer friends are typically friends for life. Hook your breaker buddy with something nice this year. Get somebody you love an after-sesh pair of sandals; O’Neill Surf Shop downtown currently offers The “Phluff Daddy” on sale for a limited time.

Winter is approaching, but surf season is never-ending for locals. Pacific Wave offers various windbreakers to keep surfers warm for post-sesh comfort. The downtown location provides fantastic holiday gift options for surf enthusiasts and beach lovers.

Lastly, hooking a surfer up with something that involves surfing is important. Cowell’s surf shop has various Fins, from “Performer PC Carbon Thruster Fin Set Black/ Teal Medium” to “Performer Glass Flex Quad Rear Fin Sets.” The shop has a variety of other necessities, such as roof racks to Surf Hats; there's something that fits your holiday budget. Vegan

In Santa Cruz, odds are in your favor that you know a vegan. Or maybe you are a vegan. Woodstock Pizza in downtown Santa Cruz has an amazing vegan pizza with vegetables that will fool your meat-loving friends (don’t do that, though—they get mad). With two locations, Pretty Good Advice is leading the way with their vegetarian/vegan menu, which features breakfast sandwiches, burgers and salads. Their interesting downtown space and cool staff contribute a real dedication to providing reasonably priced, healthy meals. Santa Cruz's Veg on the Edge serves vegan, kosher and gluten-free African food. Owner Akindele Bankole, wants to help you, impress your vegan friend. So go to Veg on the Edge and order a raw plantain salad with zucchini noodles and edamame, and then say “E kú,” which is “I greet and recognize you,” in Yoruba. Go from zero to hero, all while living a compassionate life. DNA
