The total cost of the project is about $184 million. The funding comes from the following sources, according to district staff: $54.4 million from the parcel tax, $3 million provided from the City of Morgan Hill, $17.3 million from the district’s Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Fund, $37.1 million from the Safe Clean Water Fund, $32 million from the California Department of Water Resources State Subventions Program and $40 million from

It’s a sight that’s familiar to Morgan Hill residents— a heavy rain that causes Llagas Creek to rise, threatening to fill downtown streets with muddy creek water, and flood homes and businesses. After 50 years of planning and wishful thinking, the Santa Clara Valley Water District—now officially Valley Water— is finally ready to break ground on the Llagas Creek flood protection 58015 02001

Gilroy residents have complained about what they say is indiscriminate use of the controversial herbicide Roundup in Christmas Hill Park. In social media posts, residents say the chemical —which has since 2017 been labeled carcinogenic by the state of California and the World Health Organization—is being sprayed when families are at the park and is getting into puddles of rainwater where children and pets play. Public Works Director Girum Awoke, in response to questions from the Dispatch, countered that he is confident that the city uses the herbicide sparingly and in a safe manner in accordance with strict safety standards. “Weed control herbicides including Roundup are applied by the city by state-licensed city spray applicator staff and contract staff,” Awoke said in a statement. “Herbicides used require an approved written recommendation by a state licensed pest control adviser before application by a licensed applicator.”

Police warn drivers of phone distraction GILROY PD WILL CRACK DOWN ON DRIVING WITH CELL PHONE IN HAND IN APRIL Staff report

phones must be mounted on the dashboard, windshield or center console, and can only be touched one time with the swipe or tap of a finger to activate or deactivate a function. First-time offenders of this law face a fine up to $162. “If you need to make a call or text someone, pull over and park at a safe location,” reads the press release. “Struggling to stay off the phone while driving? Put your phone in a place you can’t reach, like the backseat or trunk.” Funding for the local distracted driving enforcement operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

With April designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Gilroy Police Department is urging motorists to “silence the distraction” for traffic safety. Throughout the month of April, local police will join departments from all over the state in cracking down on drivers who violate California’s handsfree cell phone law. Gilroy Police will have additional

officers on patrol, looking specifically for drivers on their phones, throughout the month, according to a press release. In 2018, Gilroy police wrote more than 1,000 citations to drivers who were texting, calling or performing another task on their mobile phones, police said. According to data from the California Highway Patrol, in 2017 66 people died and more than 6,500 were injured statewide in distracted driving related crashes. Under the updated cell phone law that went into effect in 2017, drivers are prohibited from having a phone in their hand for any reason, and can only use the phone in a hands-free manner, police said. IVORI Brenda La Fuente, owner of new downtown store in Gilroy.

Ivori brings one-stop shopping downtown BUSINESS OWNER SAYS MONTEREY STREET IS GREAT FOR HER SHOP Jaqueline McCool Reporter

Brenda La Fuente doesn’t see a downtown Gilroy with boarded-up buildings or vacated spaces; she sees a Monterey Street full of promise and already on the rise. In September 2018 La Fuente opened the doors of Ivori Boutique at 7490 Monterey St. The store boasts a selection of contemporary women’s clothing along with shoes and home decor. An entrepreneur for over 12 years, La Fuente said

downtown Gilroy now is reminiscent of when she opened her first store in Monterey, in early stages of a retail reawakening. La Fuente sees that same promise in downtown Gilroy today. Ivori was recently recognized by Mayor Roland Velasco during his state of the city address, as an example of economic development in the city’s downtown. “There’s so many historical buildings here, I think [the downtown] is going to evolve and be beautiful,” said La Fuente. “I think it’ll be even nicer that Morgan Hill.” “I hadn’t planned on opening a store in Gilroy, but I truly believe in fate,” said La Fuente. The Victorian crown molding that surrounds the inside of La Fuente’s

space inspired the name. With a glass wall in the back of the shop that divides Ivori Boutique and BeautyMarks, the holistic salon run by Tammy DeCosta, the two women have created what they call “a onestop shop” for GIlroy women. La Fuente rents the building from Gary Walton, president of the Gilroy Downtown Association. She found DeCosta to fill the space, offering an array of skin, hair and body treatments. Both women briefly owned businesses in Morgan Hill, but said that Gilroy businesses have created a much more welcoming environment. “We all promote each other,” said DeCosta.

City contractors spray ➝ Roundup, 1

Roundup was applied on March 15 near the Christmas Hill Park Ranch site area for “nonselective weed control around the red barn, police equestrian training corral and overflow parking area,” said Awoke. “No animals or park visitors were observed within or near the spray area when the wet herbicide product was applied, and staff remained on site to observe conditions during the 30-minute drying period,” he said. Use of the herbicide has become increasingly controversial, especially in California, In the wake of a second successful lawsuit against Bayer, owner of Roundup-maker Monsanto, March 19, the city of Napa and Los Angeles County banned use of Roundup and its active herbicide, glyphosate. On the Central Coast, the San Lorenzo Valley Water District last month banned use of glyphosate by its staff in its large mountain watershed. Use of the herbicide is widespread by CalTrans, school districts and cities, and it’s readily available in hardware and garden retail stores in California, despite the state’s 2017 determination that the herbicide can cause cancer. California continues to license and approve its use under strict guidelines. California was the first state in the U.S to list glyphosate as a carcinogen. Proposition 65, approved by California voters in 1986, requires

the state to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. Glyphosate is the world’s most widely used weed killer. Monsanto’s Roundup was the first glyphosate-based weed killer but is no longer patent-protected and many other versions are now sold. In San Francisco earlier this month, a U.S. District Court judge split the case into two phases: one in which a jury unanimously determined that glyphosate caused non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and a second trial to determine Bayer’s potential liability and damages. Another glyphosate trial is set in San Francisco for may, and a third later this year. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the European Chemicals Agency and other regulators have found that glyphosate is not likely carcinogenic to humans. But the World Health Organization’s cancer arm in 2015 reached a different conclusion, classifying glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans.” The most recent case was only the second of some 11,200 Roundup lawsuits to go to trial in the U.S. Another California man was awarded $289 million in August 2018 after a state court jury found Roundup caused his cancer. That award was later reduced to $78 million and is on appeal. In Gilroy, Awoke wrote in response to Dispatch questions that “in some instances, mechanical

methods such as mowing and pulling weeds manually can be used as an alternative means to controlling weeds. “However, mowers and handheld power trimmers do not kill plant roots,” he said. “Mowing and trimming normally require repeat use of labor and equipment resources, are less effective and more costly than chemical control. In addition, mowing does not allow for selective removal and elimination of weeds in a large area, Awoke explained. “On the other hand, herbicides are targeted to be absorbed systemically by the entire plant including roots that ensures plant failure with little or no damage to surrounding plants and features.” He said Roundup is sprayed in morning hours on a seasonal basis, at Christmas Hill Park, the Gilroy Police Shooting Range, the city’s Corporation Yard, along Leavesley Road, Atkinson Park, the Gilroy Youth Center at Sixth and Railroad, the Creamery Historical Building, Gilroy Sports Park, City Hall, Sixth Street planters, Las Animas Veterans Park, Luchessa Avenue, Village Green at Third and Santa Theresa, Carriage Hills Park, Uvas Creek Preserve and Levee Trail. The city keeps some public records of all herbicide and pesticide use, as required by the state, but Awoke said detailed spray records are maintained by the city’s spraying contractor.

ustice, reason and respect demand that we respond to the horrific attack that targeted the Islamic community in Christchurch, New Zealand on March 15. The death toll has risen to 50 as of March 20, and at least an additional 50 victims were injured in a senseless targeted shooting at two Islamic mosques. The Interfaith Clergy Alliance of South County stands in solidarity with those who suffer and with the families of those who lost loved ones, and all those whose souls are tortured because of this senseless act of terrorism against the Islamic community. We call on all people of faith to work alongside South County's interfaith clergy to do all in our power to continue fostering understanding., acceptance, healing and respect and to protect those in our community from xenophobia, lslamophobia, anti Semitism, and other expressions of senseless hate. We caution everyone about labeling religious people, especially our Muslim sisters and brothers, immigrants and other minorities with names and slogans that enable unscrupulous people to react with hatred, scorn, fear and violence. We call upon political leaders and government officials around the world to take real action toward the abatement of weapons that threaten the health, safety and wellbeing of all people. For now we mourn and pray alongside those who were injured and for all those grieving the loss of their loved ones, that this violence ends. Together we must work for what is right and just that peace may prevail on earth. Interfaith Clergy Alliance of South County, including but not limited to:

Gavin Newsom’s election as governor and the expanded Democratic Party majorities in the Legislature have raised hopes in some quarters and fears in others that big tax increases may be on the horizon. During his campaign for governor last year, Newsom pledged support for a variety of expensive public services, including universal health insurance coverage and universal pre-kindergarten care and education. His initial budget offered only token appropriations for those and other items on his wish list, but were he to seriously pursue them, they would require tens of billions of dollars in new taxes each year. Newsom has proposed a new tax on water to pay for cleaning up municipal water supplies in impoverished communities. Several other targeted taxes have also been introduced in the Legislature. Meanwhile, an initiative has qualified for the 2020 ballot to undo some of Proposition 13’s property tax limits. The measure would create a “split roll,” removing the 2 percent annual cap on increases in assessed valuation for non-residential, nonagricultural commercial property, such as office buildings and shopping centers. If passed, it would raise property taxes by perhaps $10 billion a year–a lot of money, certainly, but far short of what the most ambitious service expansions would need. However, the initial polling on the splitroll measure doesn’t bode well for its passage, and the commercial real estate industry has pledged to spend $100 million to defeat it. The more likely avenue for big tax increases would be some version of tax reform, which Newsom has endorsed in principle. However, it must contend with the simple fact that we Californians are, in the aggregate, already carrying one of the nation’s highest tax burdens and quite possibly the highest. The Tax Foundation, a Washington-based organization that charts taxation trends, has California at No. 6 in state and local tax burden as a percentage of personal income, the most accepted method of comparison. It pegs Californians’ burden at 11 percent of personal income. However, that’s based on 2012 data, so it is seven years out of date, and it does not include all forms of taxation. A more up-to-date estimate is that California’s state and local governments collect about $325 billion a year in taxes, and that works out to 12.5 percent of personal income, estimated by the state as $2.6 trillion this year, thus putting us very near the top of the states. So, assuming that Newsom and his fellow Democrats in the Legislature want a bigger tax bite to finance their expansionist ambitions, what form would it take? Income taxes? They already supply 71 percent of the state’s general fund revenues; half of them are paid by the top 1 percent of taxpayers, and California already has the nation’s highest marginal tax rate, 13.3 percent on incomes over $1 million. Sales taxes? We’re at or near the top in those rates as well, 10 percent in many communities. Property taxes? That would require not just a split roll for commercial property, but voter permission to virtually repeal Proposition 13’s protections for homes, which polling indicates would be close to impossible. The real world effect of a big tax increase, moreover, would be magnified by new federal tax laws that sharply limit deductions for state and local taxes, raising the likelihood of a political backlash. So are we going to see a big tax increase? However much Newsom, et al, might want it, the political lift would be daunting. Dan Walters is with CalMatters, a non-profit journalism project in Sacramento.

Creek repairs will ease flood risks ➝ Llagas Creek, 1

Santa Clara Valley Water District

THE PLANS This map shows the water district’s plans for the Llagas Creek Flood Protection project,

which will be designed to prevent flooding along the creek as it passes through downtown Morgan Hill.

but mainly in more rural areas. He said that the district was working with Morgan Hill and Gilroy to create alternate truck routes and in residential areas, temporary walking trails. The project summary said, “The project will result in providing flood protection for 1,100 homes, 500 businesses, and over 1,300 acres of agricultural land in southern Santa Clara County.” On March 26, the water district was expected to hold a signing ceremony with the Army Corps of Engineers. Varela said this would allow the district to start construction following the selection B:10” of a contractor. T:10”

Michael Moore

The northernmost section of the project, known as Reach 8, goes through downtown Morgan Hill along West Little Llagas Creek, which flows in a southeasterly direction. Valley Water director John Varela, who represents the district that includes Morgan Hill on the board, said the project is great news for South County residents. “Flooding is something the water district is all about, and we take every measure to prevent it,” said Varela. “Mother Nature can deliver one wollup of a storm, and we have to be prepared to prevent it.” Varela said the June deadline for construction was not a hard deadline and may be subject to change, but construction is anticipated for “early summer.” The construction will widen and deepen the creekbed, and is expected to provide 100-year level flood protection to some urban areas of Morgan Hill. A 100-year flood is defined by the water district as “a flood that has a 1 percent chance of being equaled or exceeded during any given year.” According to Gina Adriano, the water district’s public information representative, Morgan Hill receives more flooding than any other area in the Llagas watershed. The watershed experienced record flooding in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2017. “The City of Morgan Hill has experienced more flooding than the City of Gilroy primarily due to increased urban

development in Morgan Hill along both banks of West Little Llagas Creek,” Adriano told the Times in an email. “The downstream sections of the Llagas Creek watershed occur primarily within the rural sections of the City of Gilroy and the unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County (and) San Martin.” While the Upper Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project was first proposed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1960s, planning began in earnest in 2009. The water district released its environmental impact report in 2014. In March 2019, the district announced the alternative they would take to complete the widening and deepening of the waterway. Adriano told the Times that the 2009 floods caused around $200,000 worth of damage and were the most damaging floods in recent memory. Morgan Hill Mayor Rich Constantine said he is relieved the project is finally taking place. “It will give our residents a little peace of mind knowing their properties won’t continue to flood,” he said. He said Morgan Hill residents had endured flooding for so long that he was happy to see “light at the end of the tunnel.” Constantine said a solution to the flooding had been a long time in the making, and he hopes the project would stay on the current timeline. Jose Villarreal, public information representative for the district, told the Times that the first phase of construction would cause some temporary impacts,

Offers available in AZ, CA, CO, ND, NM, NV, OR, SD and WA. Portfolio by Wells Fargo® customers are eligible to receive an additional bonus interest rate on these accounts.3

1. To qualify for this offer, you must have a new or existing Platinum Savings account and enroll the account in this offer between 03/25/2019 and 05/31/2019. This offer is subject to change at any time, without notice. This offer is available only to Platinum Savings customers in the following states: AZ, CA, CO, ND, NM, NV, OR, SD and WA. In order to earn the Special Interest Rate of 2.08% (Special Rate), you must deposit $25,000 in new money (from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., or its affiliates) to the enrolled savings account and maintain a minimum daily account balance of $25,000 throughout the term of this offer. The corresponding Annual Percentage Yield (APY) for this offer is 2.10%. The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply, and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 02/15/2019, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in AZ, CA, CO, ND, NM, NV, OR, SD and WA with an account balance of $0.01 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking or Wealth customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 03/25/2019 to 05/31/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. 1,2. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer, except the Portfolio by Wells Fargo $500 offer, available from March 25, 2019 until May 31, 2019. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed. © 2019 Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. GILROY DISPATCH

MARCH 29, 2019

Chamber to host legislative summit U.S., STATE AND LOCAL REPS WILL DISCUSS GILROY ISSUES Staff report

Washington and Sacramento politicians and local elected officials will be descending upon Gilroy next month to discuss policy issues and how they impact South County residents. The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce is hosting its sixth annual Legislative Summit on Friday, April 26 from 11am to 1:30pm at the

Hilton Garden Inn, 6070 Monterey St. All elected officials representing Gilroy and South County will be attending the event, including Gilroy Mayor Roland Velasco, Congress members Zoe Lofgren and Jimmy Panetta, State Sen. Bill Monning, State Assemblymember Robert Rivas, County Supervisor Mike Wasserman, Morgan Hill Mayor Rich Constantine and water district board member John Varela. The cost to attend the Legislative Summit is

$45 and includes a threecourse meal. To register visit gilroy.org or call the Chamber office at 408-842-6437. Attendees will hear from each of the elected officials regarding important issues affecting residents in Gilroy, San Martin and Morgan Hill. There will be a 30-minute question-and-answer period at the end for attendees to ask more pressing questions of their representatives. The Legislative Summit plays an important role for the Chamber. One year ago,

Jimmy Panetta

Zoe Lofgren

Robert Rivas

the Chamber was able to coordinate a tour of Gilroy school district sites with thenAssemblymember Anna Cabballero and district officials, which featured a

discussion of the impact of high-speed rail on local school properties. Two years ago, the Chamber worked with the City of Gilroy to coordinate a tour of First

Street with Monning and Caballero, which eventually led to meetings between city and state officials helping to get limited funding to repair parts of First Street.

Crude bomb defused in parking lot BOMB SQUAD REMOVES FUSE OF HOMEMADE DEVICE OFF SANTA TERESA Staff report

Gilroy police and county bomb technicians defused a “crudely constructed” bomb

found in the parking lot of a local business Tuesday morning, according to authorities. No injuries or damage were reported. Officers responded to the business complex located at 8080 Santa Teresa Blvd. just north of First Street the morning of March 26, in response to a call reporting the device, reads a

post on the Gilroy Police Department’s Facebook page. The object was a “silver tubular object with a green fuse.” The device was about seven inches long and one inch in diameter, and wrapped in a shiny foil. The device had a “store-bought” green fuse attached to it, police said. The fuse had been

lit, but failed for unknown reasons. Gilroy police called technicians from the Santa Clara County Bomb Squad to the scene. After inspecting and taking x-rays of the object, authorities determined it was a “live crudely constructed homemade explosive,” police said. The police department

asked the public to be cautious if they find any other such devices. “It is clear the person (or persons) who constructed the device have very little knowledge in the use of certain explosive chemical compounds,” reads the Facebook post. “If an object appears suspicious, please do not touch it, call 911 and try to keep

innocent people away from it until police arrival.” The Gilroy Police Facebook post does not say if anybody has been arrested in relation to the device, or if any suspects have been identified. The shopping center where the device located houses a popular restaurant and numerous commercial and office businesses.

Local author to host writers workshop series LEARN ‘HOW TO WRITE A POWERFUL STORY’ WITH JORDAN ROSENFELD Scott Forstner Reporter

Fresh off the release of her latest self-help writer’s handbook “How to Write a Page-turner,” local author Jordan Rosenfeld

will host a month-long series of workshops at the Morgan Hill Community and Cultural Center. Rosenfeld—who has authored three novels and six writing manuals—enjoys bringing out the inner author in anyone interested in telling a compelling story. “I think that there’s a lot of power to writing a story regardless of whether you call yourself a writer or not,” said the 44-year-old Morgan Hill

resident who has lived locally for 14 years. “I discovered that my students find out interesting parts of themselves as they develop their stories.” Her “How to Write a Powerful Story” workshop will be held 6:30-8pm on Tuesdays May 7-28 in the Madrone Room at the CCC, located at 17000 Monterey Road in Morgan Hill. Tickets are $85 for the four-week course or $25 for an individual session and can be purchased in

advance at eventbrite. com/e/how-to-writea-powerful-story-tickets-58756096065. Anyone interested can also email Rosenfeld directly at jordanwritelife@gmail.com. Aspiring writers will learn four key areas in creating an interesting read: strong scenes, compelling characters, powerful plotting and page-turning tension. Each session, Rosenfeld will give a Powerpoint presentation lecture and then follow

with in-class participation writing with different writing prompts and exercises. “I’ve been teaching at writing conferences and workshops the last couple of years, and the more I’ve done it, the more I’ve wanted to do something local,” Rosenfeld said. “I’ve been meeting more people that say they have a story to tell.” Adult or teen attendees should come prepared to write with either a notebook or a laptop computer.

Rosenfeld, whose “How to Write a Page-turner” can be purchased locally at Booksmart, 421 Vineyard Blvd., is currently working on her fourth novel to follow up her “Women in Red” psychological suspense thriller published in 2015. “I like to write novels because I like to play with the psychology of people,” Rosenfeld said. “This workshop is for anyone who has a story to tell and wants to learn how to write it.”

More than 5,000 wells owned and operated by farmers, homeowners, cities and private water retailers, pump water from underground aquifers monitored and replenished by the Santa Clara Valley Water District (Valley Water). As the groundwater management agency, we actively manage our groundwater basins and replenish them with local and imported water. Maintaining our groundwater levels is critical for ensuring a reliable water supply, preventing land subsidence, and storing water for use during droughts and shortages. Every year, groundwater production charges are assessed and adjusted as necessary to cover costs in delivering safe, clean drinking water to South County customers. A reliable source of water for the projected population growth is a primary concern of Valley Water’s board of directors. Furthermore, vital infrastructure upgrades, such as the Anderson Dam Seismic Retrofit Project, pipeline inspection and rehabilitation, and the development of future drought-proof recycled water supplies, are necessary to ensure reliability for years to come. We continue to encourage lower water usage, which results in lower revenue for infrastructure upgrades and rehabilitation projects, and puts upward pressure on water rates in the near term. Reduced water use per capita will reduce the need for long-term investments to secure new supplies, which will minimize rate increases in the future. Valley Water is hosting a public hearing in Morgan Hill for residents to ask questions or comment on the proposed rates. This annual process creates a channel for transparency and ongoing well owner communication and engagement.

POINT, COUGARS Christopher High junior middle blocker J.T. Zollinger has been terrific this season both on the attack and on defense at the net. Zollinger and freshman sensation Ryan Duross form one of the more potent 1-2 hitting combinations in the Pacific Coast League’s Gabilan Division.

COUGARS COULD BE IN LINE FOR HISTORIC SEASON emanuel lee Sports Editor

Unlimited possibilities

It’s all possible if the Cougars continue to work hard, stay committed to each other and display the mental toughness that’s been evident in their matches. Zollinger, who had 14 kills against Carmel and is second on the team in that category to freshman sensation Ryan Duross, pointed to the team’s improved chemistry and mental game as the difference this season. “I felt like our chemistry was good last year, but this year we’ve done better staying positive and keeping the energy up and pushing for every point,” he said. “Last year we would get down a lot and go into ruts. Coach Kevin really pushed that as a reason for some of our failures last year. He told me, Gio (Caradonna) and Daniel (Lee) because we’re captains to make sure we’re always talking and keeping the energy high.” The Cougars, who suffered a minor setback in a 3-2 loss to Pacific Collegiate last Friday, have a quality player at virtually ever position, starting at setter. Caradonna directs the offense with precision, but just as important, he’s become an excellent blocker, which has bolstered

Robert Eliason

The road to the Pacific Coast League Gabilan Division championship goes through Carmel High, which has won the division title since the 2016 season. Christopher High knows this, which explains why the Cougars were elated after knocking off the Padres in a white-knuckle affair, 31-29, 25-23, 28-26 in a March 19 match. “It means a lot to beat them,” said J.T. Zollinger, a Christopher High junior middle blocker. “It’s a game I always look forward to and a game I always get excited about. It’s the game we really want the most.” And with good reason. Carmel is the Gabilan Division standard bearer, a perennial force in the Central Coast Section. If the Cougars wanted to be considered as a legitimate threat to win the title this season, they had to at the very least beat Carmel once in the teams’ two regularseason contests. “It was a real battle that could’ve easily gone the other way,” Cougars coach Kevin Bruce said. “We’ve never beaten Carmel in the last four years and I think we might have been a little more hungry. It was a very intense match with a lot of energy—probably one of the best matches we’ve ever played. It was special how much energy the guys on the team put out to work together and build this team chemistry.” Although Christopher had a talented team last year, it finished 7-5 in league play. This season the team has similar talent—with more experience—to

go with added cohesiveness that’s proven to be the difference for what could turn into a special season. Entering this week’s play, the Cougars were 13-4 overall and 3-1 in league play, by far the best start in program history. Since boys volleyball started play at the school in 2011, Christopher has put together some strong seasons, notably in 2014 when it finished 22-13 overall and 12-4 in the Gabilan, its second-place league finish representing the program’s highwater mark. However, this season the Cougars look to break every school record imaginable: most wins in a season, best league finish and a deep Central Coast Section playoff run.

BLOCK PARTY Oscar Canales, a Christopher High junior middle blocker, stuffs the Prospect attack in earlier action this season. Canales has come on strong in his first season on the varsity team. Christopher’s defense. “He’s been focused on blocking and digging,” Bruce said. “He’s maybe pushing 5-10, but he knows how to position himself well. Him being out there is like having another coach on the court for me.” Duross has been nothing short of sensational in his freshman year, racking up kills at a prodigious rate. Duross and Zollinger give the team a potent 1-2 attacking punch that puts pressure on teams from the get-go. Duross had a team-high 16 kills and 17 digs in the win over Carmel, a testament to his all-around play as he plays all six rotations. He also won 12 points on his serve, which proved pivotal.

“Ryan is not your normal freshman,” Bruce said. “He’s been playing at a high club level for three years and has as much experience as most of the upperclassmen. And J.T. switched positions from the outside to the middle this year, which has really sped up our process because we thought middle might be a weak point. But instead it’s turned into one of our strengths.” Duross and junior libero Daniel Lee spearhead the back row, and senior outside hitter Nolan Ciccone plays all six rotations. “Nolan is a smart player, can jump high and has been on the varsity for four years,” Bruce said. Oscar Canales, a junior middle

blocker, had six kills and eight digs against Carmel. Nicholas Hy, a senior opposite/setter, has emerged as an impact player. Bruce, who is in his fourth season as the varsity coach, said players can take constructive criticism and use it to better themselves. “We can talk to each other and no one really gets upset, which is kind of a nice thing to have,” he said. “We’ve clicked as a team and there are no issues with anyone.” Believe it or not, a dramafree locker room is a rare quality to have on any high school sports team. Speaking of a rarity, Zollinger is unique in that he ➝ Volleyball, page 18

Yslava signs with St. Louis University GILROY HIGH MULTI SPORT STANDOUT REALIZES DREAM AND WILL PLAY FOR A DIVISION ONE PROGRAM emanuel lee Sports Editor

It also didn’t hurt that St. Louis University is a Division I program. “If she gave me a spot on the team I was going to take it, so I accepted the offer on the same day,” said Yslava, who signed her official letter of intent two weeks ago and had a ceremonial signing event at the school’s library last Friday. “When I visited the school, I attended a business class there because school is always my first priority. I made sure they had everything I needed for my school so I can set myself up for my future career.”

Pure playmaker

Yslava stood out as a playmaker at Gilroy High, utilizing her speed and quick shot from the top of the circle. Yslava’s vision and game awareness have also been a strength of her game in recent years. A couple of days before the signing ceremony, Yslava got emotional as she prepared the final draft for her speech. “I will probably get the most emotional when speaking about my family because I’m going to miss them so much when

Robert Eliason

Korynn Yslava knew she had one last chance to make a great impression. On a plane ride to Florida in mid January to play in a national showcase field hockey tournament, the Gilroy High senior knew if she didn’t put her best foot forward—literally and figuratively—her chances of playing college field hockey would essentially be over. “It was my last recruiting tournament, and my mom and I had talked it through that if I really wanted to play in college, I needed to go to this tournament,” Yslava said. “I had gone to this same tournament last year, and the amount of exposure you get to college coaches is insane. There are over 100 coaches attending, from D1 to D3. So the whole time I was there I was nervous because I needed to make sure I left

everything out on the field. It was my last chance.” Yslava made the most of her final opportunity. It was no accident that Yslava drew the attention of St. Louis University coach Danielle Baumgardner; after all, the Gilroy High standout had been preparing for the showcase tournament for two months. As the tournament played on, Yslava received comments that people were noticing her. However, it wasn’t until approximately 2 ½ weeks later when Yslava received an email from Baumgardner when Yslava started to gain legitimate hope that her dream of playing for a Division I program would materialize. The two talked on the phone three days later, and from there Yslava took a campus visit from Feb. 14-17, with Baumgardner sending an offer to Yslava on Feb. 26. During the time from the visit to the offer, Yslava had made up her mind that she would accept if St Louis University offered because the university has a reputable business program, and Yslava plans on majoring in business marketing.

ALL SMILES Gilroy High senior Korynn Yslava persevered to sign a scholarship to play for

St. Louis University. The Billikens are a Division I program.

I leave for Missouri,” she said. “That will be a very hard one for me to talk about.” After the high school field hockey season ended, Yslava tried out and made the girls soccer team, the inaugural season on the pitch for Yslava at Gilroy High. One of her teammates from the field hockey team, Olivia Bozzo, encouraged Yslava to try

out for the team, which turned out to be a great experience. “I loved it; it was amazing,” she said. “I met all these girls who were super good at soccer. I’ve always played either field hockey or softball, so playing a different sport was nice and provided a new challenge.” Longtime Gilroy High field hockey coach Adam Gemar said Yslava’s work

ethic is second to none, and when you combine that with her speed, it makes for an athlete who can do great things. “She’s a super hard worker, has great skill and is super fast,” Gemar said. “She’s a very good communicator and always worked on her game on her own. I feel like Korynn can take her game to the next level for sure.”

Zollinger, who attends the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gilroy. Instead of traveling constantly in the summer from tournament to tournament, Zollinger likes to hang out with friends at the beach and surf on occasion. He still works on his game during the

off-season—just not on a club team. Zollinger often has a nice height advantage against the opposing block, which means he simply elevates above the defenders and easily powers an attack for a point. However, when Zollinger faces a big block like he did against Carmel,

he can’t simply overpower them. Instead, Zollinger smartly reads the defense and mixes up his attack. “I have to play it smart and aim for the corners,” he said. “I’ll tip it once in a while to keep the defense honest and make sure not to do the same thing over and over again.”

Zollinger and Duross— they’re both around 6-3, give an inch or two—are dynamic players who can slam the ball straight down for emphatic kills. The two have a friendly competition that helps each other improve and keeps the game fun. Zollinger has been impressed with

the play of Duross. “It’s insane to see someone so young be so talented,” said Zollinger, who has a weighted 4.4 GPA. “He is one of the factors of keeping the team’s energy level high, not only because of his talent, but the amazing plays he does that gest us hyped.”

ob was born in Gilroy and graduated from Live Oak High School. He enjoyed being a Rucker 4-H swine leader, riding horses, and playing the saxophone. Preceded in death by parents, Albert and Winifred Goodrich, and brothers, Richard and Kenneth. Survived by wife of 54 years, Diane Bogle Goodrich; children Linda, Bobby, and Karen (Lloyd) Acosta; 8 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 on April 15th at the Escalon Presbyterian Church.

After his service in the Navy he moved to Gilroy, CA to live near his beloved sister Nadine McPeak. He soon went to work for Robinson Fan, which became Air-O-Fan Products. He began as a welder and through the 40+ years moved up to Superintendent of the manufacturing plant. During those years he designed and built sprayer models that are still being manufactured today. When the company moved to the Central Valley he started his own business with his son representing and selling the Air-O-Fan equipment line on the Central Coast, until his last days. He met Marie A Castro in the summer of 1949. They married in June 1950. Dunc enjoyed hunting, fishing, team roping and golf. He also had a talent and enjoyed working on antique motors. He and Mary spent many weekends at antique swap meets and camping with family and friends, which often included a stop at a casino to try their luck. Most people would agree that Dunc was a great storyteller, and always had a new joke or sometimes an old joke with a new twist. Dunc is survived by his only son Arliss, daughter-in-law Carol, his grandchildren Carissa and Danny, Danny’s wife Rachel and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, all his brothers and sisters and parents. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wounded Warriors or donors favorite charity.
