The Federal Rail Administration has pulled funding for California’s High-Speed Rail Project. In a letter sent to HighSpeed Rail Authority President Brian Kelly, the FRA said it will be terminating the 2010 cooperative agreement between the two agencies. This will pull $929 million in funding from the project, which has never been fully funded. The FRA has also requested the authority return the $2.5 billion in funding already given to

In Santa Clara County, nearly three new people seek assistance for each person who exits homelessness, according to preliminary results of a biennial county of homeless people. Santa Clara County and the City of San Jose on May 16 announced preliminary results of the biennial homeless census covering the county’s 15 cities and unincorporated areas. The count, conducted over two days in January, found the number of homeless adults increased significantly over the past two years, resulting in an increase in the region’s overall homeless population. The county and San Jose have housed approximately 4,000 formerly homeless families and individuals since 2017. Despite these efforts, the number of newly homeless residents continues to outpace the capacity of county and city systems to place people in stable housing, the county reported. “The reasons for homelessness are many and varied,” said Joe Simitian, president of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors. “The high cost and shortage of housing are making a bad problem worse. Combining our efforts to prevent homelessness and create supportive housing with 2016 Measure A— Affordable Housing Bond—funds will continue to be an essential
strategy in addressing homelessness.” So far, the county has committed $234 million in Measure A funds toward 19 housing developments that will collectively add 1,437 apartments for the most vulnerable in our community, according to the county. The county’s overall homeless count was 9,706, an increase of 2,312 over 2017. In San Jose, the overall homeless count was 6,172, up from 1,822 in 2017. The numbers are part of a biennial nationwide tally for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Details of the homeless count for Gilroy, Morgan Hill and San Martin are expected to be available in June when the complete homeless census is released. “We must double down on homelessness prevention and, in turn, alleviate the human misery and greater public cost following an eviction notice,” said San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. “It’s also time to end the reign of the NIMBY in Silicon Valley.” “We all have a shared responsibility to address this crisis—every city and every neighborhood. That means we must house homeless neighbors here, not the proverbial ‘somewhere else’.” In Santa Clara County, the 2019 census found the number of homeless family members was 921, down from 1,075 in 2017. The number of homeless veterans was 653, down slightly from 660 in 2017. To address the rise of homelessness, the county has prioritized
development of housing for residents experiencing homelessness and households making less than 30 percent of the area’s median income. The 2019 census found the numbers also increased for chronically homeless and the unsheltered population. Countywide, the number of chronically homeless was 2,470, an increase of 373 over 2017. The percentage of homeless county residents who were unsheltered was 82 percent, up from 74 percent in 2017. And the number of unaccompanied youth and young adults was 1,876. While this figure was down from 2017, the decline was due in part to a change in methodology for counting young people. In San Jose, the number of people considered chronically homeless was 1,579, an increase of 374 over 2017. The percentage of homeless residents who were unsheltered was 83 percent, up from 74 percent in 2017. And the number of unaccompanied youth and young adults was 1,391. “Now is the time to redouble our efforts to solve this crisis,” said Jennifer Loving, chief executive officer of Destination: Home. “The solutions are right here in front of us; we just need to mobilize the collective will and resources to scale our proven strategies and meet the enormous need in our community. Bottom line: Homelessness is solvable.”

Gas line upgrade
Barry Holtzclaw
Contractors for Pacific Gas & Electric Co. repave the area around a gas main on Monterey Street at Seventh on May 17, completing the replacement of a section of gas line through a block of Gilroy’s downtown. The work involved running a new plastic pipe in a section of older iron pipe, temporarily narrowing the city’s main street. A massive repaving project along 10 blocks of Monterey Street is to begin later this summer.
School trusteee pushes eastside pool SOUTH VALLEY MS CAMPUS, SAN YSIDRO PARK POSSIBLE LOCATIONS Scott Forstner Reporter
A Gilroy school board trustee is leading the charge for the construction of a new community pool on the east side of the city, which has had no public aquatic facilities since the closing of the old pool at South Valley Middle School nearly a decade ago. While the plan to get that done is still in its infancy, veteran Gilroy Unified School District
Trustee Linda Piceno—also a retired GUSD administrator—introduced the concept to her colleagues on the school board and district leadership May 9. “I feel strongly that we need a public community pool on the east side of Gilroy,” said Piceno, who wanted to make clear that she is speaking as a private citizen for this initiative. Piceno is in the process of forming a committee to help with fundraising for the community pool since “neither the city nor the district has enough money to build a pool.” The school district trustees have allocated bond money to renovate the aging South Valley
campus located at 385 IOOF Ave., and Piceno wants to make sure they take into consideration the concept of building a pool on school grounds to serve the community. “That is the only piece of land that is large enough and available besides San Ysidro Park to fit a community pool” on the east side, said Piceno. San Ysidro is 9.75 acres, and there are two smaller eastside parks of about a quarter-acre each. “It’s the only big piece of property on the east side, so it seems logical if a community pool was to be put in, it would be on that parcel somewhere,” said Piceno of South Valley. “That would be my first choice, and San
Ysidro would be the other.” Piceno estimated a new community pool would cost about $8 million. The $5.8 million Gilroy High School pool reconstruction project that’s underway will not be completed until the end of the summer. “When I spoke and asked to put the idea of a community pool on the agenda, it was not as an action item, just as information only,” Piceno said. “Right now, it’s just a concept. I just don’t want to have any regrets about not saying anything, because people on the east side need a community pool.” Currently, the only pool open to the public is at Christopher High School
on the far northwest side of town. The CHS Aquatics Center opens to the public on weekends June 1-16 from 11:30am to 5pm and then Tuesday through Sunday June 18-Aug. 4 during the same operating hours. The cost is $8 weekdays and $10 weekends. “We are redoing South Valley Middle School, and within the next 2½ years, we will have plans for that. I don’t want to wait until that happens before bringing this idea forward,” Piceno said. “It will not be a South Valley pool. It will not be part of that school. It will be a community pool.” In a 7-0 vote at the Jan. 18, 2018 meeting, Gilroy’s board of trustees voted in
favor of the district’s reallocation of Measure E’s Series B funds, with $90.5 million for South Valley (built in 1958 as Gilroy High School) and $71.8 million for Brownell. Piceno plans to form a foundation and begin fundraising as soon as possible to make the community pool idea a reality within the next three to seven years. “I want to fundraise enough money to build the pool, maintain it and possibly staff it,” said Piceno, estimating it will take about $15 million to accomplish that goal. “This is not a quick fix. It will not get done overnight. But if we don’t start talking about it now, it will never happen.”

Farmers need immigrant labor
GUEST VIEW DAN WALTERS
New housing falls short
T
he state Department of Finance reported this month that California, which has a stubborn and growing shortage of housing, added just 77,000 houses, apartments and condos in 2018. Actually, private and public housing developers drew permits for well over 100,000 units, and about that many were constructed. But a whopping 23,700 existing homes were burned or demolished, more than half of them in just one community, Paradise, which was virtually destroyed by wildfire. With fire losses, the net addition was lower than the 85,297 recorded in 2017, which was lower than the 89,457 in 2016— a situation that Gov. Gavin Newsom labeled as “deplorable” when he introduced a revised state budget this month. “The underproduction of supply continues to define the housing crisis the state is currently facing,” the revised budget declares. “California is home to 10 of the least affordable major markets and six of the 15 most expensive large metropolitan rental markets in the country. Rising costs continue to strain homeowners and renters statewide and negatively impact the state’s quality of life and long-term economic prosperity.” It’s one of many socio-economic issues that Newsom vows to confront and resolve during his still-new governorship. He is touting “a comprehensive $1.75 billion proposal to spur housing production, including planning and production grants to local governments, expansion of the state’s housing tax credit program and loan program for mixed-income housing, and opportunities for innovative housing projects on excess state property.” Newsom said he also “has refocused $500 million to removing barriers to building affordable housing and adding funding to assist California renters.” This year’s legislative session, meanwhile, bristles with dozens of proposals their sponsors say will aggressively attack
California’s housing shortage and its consequence of soaring home prices and rents. The best-known measure, and one that has appeared to have the greatest potential impact, is Senate Bill 50, which aims to overcome local not-in-my-backyard opposition to new housing by establishing a right to build multi-unit projects in “transitrich” or “job-rich” communities with housing shortages, regardless of local zoning laws. SB 50 recognizes the most important fact about closing California’s housing gap: that direct governmental spending, such as what Newsom proposes, has only a marginal effect and that the most urgent need is to make private housing investment more attractive by reducing the costs and red tape now associated with projects. However, the bill’s author, Sen. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat, has been compelled to revise the once-straightforward bill to accommodate pressure from local officials, who cherish their land use powers, and his fellow legislators. The changes seem to be watering down its potential for a big impact. The Terner Center for Housing Innovation at UC-Berkeley, in a new analysis, says the bill’s stated goal is undercut by carve-outs for specific counties and delay of the measure’s provisions in locally defined “sensitive communities.” “Certainly, upzoning is not a panacea for solving the housing crisis,” the analysis concludes, adding, “It will take years for new supply to have a measurable effect on housing affordability, which is why any efforts to change land use regulations need to be accompanied by renter protections and policies that expand access to affordable units. But maintaining existing land use regulations that allow localities to avoid permitting new multi-family housing—and especially affordable housing—is not the solution, either.” Last week, SB 50 was put on hold until next year. Its struggles underscore the truism that housing is a tough political nut to crack.

California farmers continue to find themselves short of employees, despite raising wages, increasing benefits and taking other steps to try to alleviate the problem, according to a survey conducted by the California Farm Bureau Federation in collaboration with the University of California, Davis. The results remain consistent with a similar voluntary survey by CFBF in 2017. In the 2019 survey, 56 percent of participating farmers reported they had been unable to hire all the employees they needed for production of their main crop at some point during the past five years. A survey conducted in summer 2017 showed 55 percent of farmers had experienced employee shortages. The 2019 findings show that California farming operations continue to see a negative trend in employee availability, resulting in more challenges and the likelihood of tough business decisions in the very near future. The purpose of the survey was to collect information about changes in farming practices resulting from the increase of employee scarcity. This report describes the survey response and summarizes key findings. Among them: • 86 percent of farmers responding to the survey said they had raised wages in efforts to hire enough people. • 61 percent reported they had hired a farm labor contractor to recruit employees. • 56 percent reported they have used a labor-saving technology, and of those who began using mechanization, 56 percent did so due to employee shortages. • 37 percent said they had adjusted cultivation practices, for example by reducing or delaying weeding and pruning. • 31 percent said they are switching acreage. • 6 percent said they had enrolled in the H-2A agricultural visa program. The results from this survey reveal that California farmers are trying to adapt to employee scarcity in a number of different ways. Most growers responding to the survey recently experienced some type of shortage, and those reporting shortages said the incidence of the scarcity has intensified. California farmers are reacting through a variety of different coping mechanisms. More rely on farm labor contractors and the H-2A visa program to meet their workforce needs. Although only a small percentage of California farmers have turned to the H-2A program to fill job vacancies, the rate of H-2A use has increased. Farmers are adjusting their crop mix, with some switching acreage from labor-intensive crops such as tree fruits and vegetables into non-labor-intensive crops that can be mechanically harvested, such as tree nuts and row crops. In responding to the survey, farmers said they increasingly are adopting technology where possible. A majority of the farmers used a technology that reduced their reliance on a workforce at some point during the past five years. More than one-third of the farmers in the survey reported changing cultivation practices during the past five years, a marked acceleration. Farmers face continuing challenges in agricultural employee availability. In California alone, farmers and ranchers hire nearly 473,000 employees during peak season. National estimates put the agricultural workforce at 2.5 million hired employees. Experts calculate that 50 to 70 percent of the hired workers are not authorized to work in the U.S. Farmers in California as well as throughout the United States have been forthright about the fact that they rely on a largely immigrant workforce. Farmers face new challenges related to employee availability. Farmers are paying higher wages and their farming practices are changing in response to reduced employee availability. Efforts to hire U.S.-born employees on farms have remained unsuccessful. California farmers are trying a variety of tactics to fill on-farm jobs. Those efforts need to be complemented by agricultural workforce reform that provides existing employees with a legal status and allows entry for future guest workers who desire to work in U.S. agriculture. the project. The project’s price tag is currently hovering around $79 billion. The 25-page letter outlined all of the reasons the FRA is ending the partnership, stating that the state rail authority had violated the terms of the agreement. “FRA has determined that CHSRA has violated the terms of the FY 10 agreement and has failed to make reasonable progress on the project,” the letter said. Pulling federal funding for the project comes after a series of tweets from President Donald Trump that criticized the HSRA, the project itself and California Gov. Gavin Newsom. In his February State of the State address, Newsom said that California would be rerouting funding for the rail to the Central Valley portion of
the project that would link Merced and Bakersfield. Newsom and Trump traded barbs on Twitter, and days later the FRA gave notice that the federal administration expected to pull the funding. Kelly sent a letter back to the FRA in March, the federal government was silent when it came to California’s High-Speed Rail for two months following the initial announcement. In its 2019 project update, the High-Speed Rail Authority identified the FRA’s lack of communication and possible funding termination as one of the project’s biggest obstacles. Newsom still believes the funding belongs to California and has threatened to sue the administration in order to keep it. “The Trump administration’s action is illegal and a direct assault on California, our green infrastructure, and the thousands of Central
Valley workers who are building this project," Newsom said in a statement. “Just as we have seen from the Trump administration’s attacks on our clean air standards, our immigrant communities and in countless other areas, the Trump administration is trying to exact political retribution on our state. This is California’s money, appropriated by Congress, and we will vigorously defend it in court.” The High-Speed Rail project has been in the works for decades, and the state’s voters approved a bond to partially fund it in 2008. It is slated to carry passengers from San Francisco to Los Angeles when complete, with a station planned in Gilroy. The rail system would also cut north to south through Morgan Hill without stopping, though authorities have not determined the exact route this segment of the system would take.
Princeton-bound Samantha Melton, a senior at Dr. TJ Owens Gilroy Early College Academy, was named a 2019 National Merit Scholar winner, according to an announcement from Gilroy Unified School District. Melton, who was honored by the Board of Education for her accomplishment earlier this month, is the first-ever National Merit Scholarship finalist out of GECA. The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students across the country who demonstrate exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Melton, who qualified for the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship to help with school expenses, was among 7,500 scholarship recipients chosen from a pool of 15,000 semifinalists. She will attend Princeton University in the fall of 2019. About 1.6 million juniors across the country entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT, which is used as the
Samantha Melton National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. From the pool of students who entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000, or 1 percent, were named Semifinalists. Semifinalists are designated on a state representational basis, in proportion to each state’s percentage of the national total of graduating high school seniors. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Melton became a finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance. Less than 0.5 percent of the high school juniors who take the qualifying examinations are named National Merit Scholarship winners.
Melton is GECA’s first National Merit Finalist.

Officers warn of phone scam DO NOT PAY ALLEGED FINES, FEES WITH GIFT CARDS Staff report
File photo
Gilroy Police are warning the public about a common phone scam after a resident recently fell victim to the fraud. On May 14, a Gilroy resident received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Social Security Administration, reads a press release from the Gilroy Police Department.,The resident was informed their Social Security number was being fraudulently used and an officer from the Gilroy Police Department would be calling them to take a report. A few minutes later, the resident received a “spoof call” from the GPD non-emergency phone number, police said. The caller identified himself as a member of GPD and he told the resident that in order to resolve the issue, they would need to purchase retail gift cards and provide the card numbers. The resident followed the instructions and later realized it was a scam. Police seek to remind

Police set checkpoints DUI AND LICENSE CHECK SCHEDULED FOR MAY 24 Staff report
Gilroy Police will host a DUI and driver's license checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits the evening of May 24. "The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug-involved crashes," reads a press release from the Gilroy Police Department. "Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely." At the May 24 checkpoint, officers will look for motorists showing signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.
Officers will also be checking drivers for proper license and registration. If possible, specially trained officers will be available to evaluate drivers suspected of drug-impaired driving, police said. In California, driving under the influence resulted in 802 deaths in 2012, reads the press release. Statistics further reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal accidents had one or more drugs in their systems. A recent study of active drivers found that more motorists tested positive for impairing drugs (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), DUI checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding cost savings of $6 for
every $1 spent, the Gilroy police press release adds. Nearly 90 percent of California drivers approve of DUI checkpoints. DUI checkpoints are placed in locations based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests, affording the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence, police added. Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public. Motorists caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, the press release said. Funding for the May 24 checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the NHTSA.
residents to be aware of these types of scams and to be suspicious of any telephone calls where the caller imposes a problem or crisis and the only solution is to immediately send money. The fictitious problem or crisis can include identity theft, an arrest warrant, an immigration issue, delinquent taxes, a relative in jail or a kidnapped relative, according to police. The money demanded can be in the form of gift cards or money wire transfers through private money transfer companies. Gilroy police also confirmed that legitimate governmental agencies will never seek or accept payments by gift cards or through private money transfer companies. If an individual calls identifying themselves as a law enforcement officer or a representative of a law enforcement agency and you believe the phone call is suspicious, you are encouraged to contact the law enforcement agency in question to verify the caller’s identity, police said. Anyone with information about this investigation can call the Gilroy Police Department at (408) 846-0350.
If you believe a phone call is suspicious, call police.

CLUTCH PERFORMER Cougars senior Matt Peters started both of the team’s first two CCS Division II playoff games. Peters pitched six shutout innings in a 1-0, 8-inning win over Hillsdale in the opening round before going the distance in a thrilling 5-4 comeback win over St. Ignatius.
COUGARS SENIOR MATT PETERS IS DELIVERING IN PLAYOFFS emanuel lee Sports Editor
When ace Jake Ornellas had to be shut down indefinitely due to arm fatigue last month, the Christopher High baseball team needed someone to assume the role of delivering ace-type performances. That’s exactly what senior Matt Peters did, and it’s a key reason why the No. 3 seed Cougars (21-8) have advanced to the Central Coast Section Division II playoff semifinals— this edition went to press before the start of Wednesday’s game—for the second consecutive season. In a 1-0, eight-inning win over Hillsdale in the opening round, Peters delivered six shutout innings, allowing only four hits and striking out eight in a dominant performance. That was Peters’ second best outing of
the season, his first masterpiece coming when he had 11 strikeouts over seven shutout innings against San Benito on April 5. “The Hollister game was my best start, but this game was more meaningful because it helped the team get to the second round of the playoffs,” he said. Monday, Peters overcame a rough start—he yielded three homers and four runs in the first two innings—but settled down nicely as the Cougars roared back for a 5-4 quarterfinal victory over St. Ignatius. For the second time in as many games, Peters showed plenty of resolve and mental toughness. Against St. Ignatius, Peters overcame a shaky start and finished the game strong. Against Hillsdale, the left-hander faced a pair of bases-loaded jams in the second and fifth innings. However, the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Peters utilized a sound mental strategy and delivered his best pitches when it counted the most. “At that point you just have to stay in a calm state of mind,” he said. “I don’t stress out on those type of things. I try to stay calm, cool and collected, and do what I do best.” Cougars coach Ryan Dequin
was effusive in his praise for Peters for his professional work ethic, mental toughness and ability to compete. “He’s shown resiliency in tough situations all season, especially in the playoffs,” Dequin said. “I can’t say enough about him. He stepped up and has done everything we’ve asked of him. He’s put in the time and effort with rehab work, pen work, and has essentially stepped up as the go-to guy when Jake had some issues with his arm. He’s a great kid, and I would love to have 18 Peters out there.” Peters utilizes a two-seam fastball, curve, circle changeup and splitter. His fastball tails away from right-handed batters, and he’s confident he can throw most or all of his pitches for strikes in any count. “I don’t throw as hard as some other guys in the league, but I’m able to manipulate the ball and throw pitches to where I need them to be thrown,” he said. Peters knows how to spot pitches in the zone and grip the ball differently and throw multiple different pitches for strikes in any count and situation. Last year, Jonathan Newman and Sean Straub were the workhorses,
often pitching deep into games. Peters pitched sparingly, biding his time and waiting patiently knowing his senior season would be a prime chance to shine. “Even though I didn’t pitch in a lot of games, I spent a lot of time outside of the games and in practices throwing a lot of bullpens and making myself better,” he said. “I got bigger in the gym, and knowing this year would be my year drove me to do better.” A 4.0 GPA student, Peters plans on enrolling at Gavilan College to play baseball next season to increase his chances of eventually playing at the fouryear level. Peters feels he can still make dramatic improvements over time, much in the way he did from his junior to senior season. If Peters continues to ascend, there is no doubt he’ll be playing at the four-year level. Peters is a student of the game and knows the importance of recovery. The hours and days after a start are critical for a pitcher being prepared to deliver a strong performance the next time he takes the mound. After every start, Peters engages in a series of active recovery movements, including working with bands, dumbbells and doing
cardio. With the team just two wins away from a CCS playoff championship, Peters and his teammates are enjoying one spectacular ride. Peters raved about some of his teammates’ ability and intangibles. “Garret Santos (against Hillsdale) saved the game for us multiple times playing third base,” Peters said. “He is an absolute animal. And then guys like Jack Tomlinson puts his heart and soul out on the field for everything and plays a complete game. Travis Romero, our second baseman and shortstop, gets it done and Andrew Kachel hit a double that was a big moment for us. … A lot of guys have been playing together since we were really young, and you can tell the fire and intensity is really there. Getting into these one-game elimination tournaments really brings out the competitive intensity of our guys.” No matter what happens from here on out, it’s been a memorable season for the Cougars, who beat their first two playoff opponents in dramatic fashion, the second a nail-biting comeback that saw them rally from a 4-0 deficit. It was a result that epitomized their resilency and determination.

Prettyman rises in CCS Finals meet PACIFIC POINT SENIOR NEARLY MAKES STATE DESPITE HAVING ONLY 2 YEARS OF HIGH JUMPING EXPERIENCE emanuel lee Sports Editor
averaged around 25 points per game during the basketball season in helping Pacific Point advance to the CCS playoffs, has developed a passion for high jumping. There’s no telling how high she could go if she continues the sport in college; however, Prettyman is not sure her basketball coach at The Master’s would give the OK for her to compete in track and field.
High ceiling
The winner in the high jump in last year’s Golden State Athletic Conference— the league in which The Master’s University is a member of—cleared 5-3, and it wouldn’t be a reach to think Prettyman could clear that mark or higher with a full season under the tutelage of college coaches. “It’s a hard decision, but basketball is No. 1,” she said. This season, Prettyman watched some Youtube videos and received some different advice from three different coaches who would all tell her slightly different things. “It was a little hard, but it all worked out,” she said. Among other local athletes, Christopher High junior Keola Sylva finished

Olivia Prettyman is already set to play basketball in the fall at The Master’s University in Santa Clarita. Even though basketball is her favorite sport, the Pacific Point School senior has enormous potential in the high jump, as evidenced by her impressive showing in last Friday’s Central Coast Section Championships at Gilroy High. Prettyman cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to finish in fifth place. The top three in each event advance to the CIF State Meet, and Prettyman was close to doing just that. The winner had a mark of 5-6, but the next seven placers all cleared 5-2. The total number of misses at the previous heights determined the placements. Prettyman had misses at 4-10 and 5 feet— each athlete gets three attempts to clear a height— but eventually cleared them
and 5-2, the latter equaling her personal-record (PR) she set just six days earlier in the CCS Semifinals. “I am satisfied,” she said. “I wish I wouldn’t have missed before 5-4, but I jumped well and I thought it was a good season.” Of that, there is no doubt. Prettyman was one of only four athletes on the Pacific Point School track and field team—she’s one of 14 students in the 20182019 graduating class— and despite not having a jumps coach, Prettyman managed to compete with the section’s best and was close to making state. Even more amazing, Prettyman has only been competing in the high jump for two years—the first as a sophomore in Nebraska and this season (Pacific Point didn’t have a team last year). With no home track and field facility, Pacific Point had to find a place to practice, and Gilroy High was gracious enough to allow the Pacific Point athletes to use its facility. “We came here and practiced pretty much whenever we wanted, so that was very nice of them to allow us to use their facility,” she said. Prettyman, who
GOING HIGH Olivia Prettyman, a Pacific Point School senior, finished in fifth place
in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 2 inches, equaling her personal-record. fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 44-11 ½. An obviously disappointed Sylva—he hit a PR of 46-9 six days earlier in the CCS Semis—knows what he has to work on in the off-season.” “For me me it’s completely mental,” he said. “I have to stay positive and work on the mental game this summer so I can keep
my mind at ease (during competition). I came into this meet kind of happy and let my emotions get the best of me. It kind of ruined everything.” Sylva owns two of the top five marks in the CCS this season, with the other being a 46-2 ¼ coming at Arcadia. At around 6-foot3, 6-4, Sylva has the ability and skills to be the very best
in the section. Sylva will go into the off-season as determined as ever to improve himself, because that’s what he’s been doing ever since he started jumping. “I’m just disappointed in myself that I put in so much work not to jump as far as I wanted to today,” he said. “I’m going to take a couple of weeks off and get back at it.”

OBITUARIES ANTHONY (TONY) LOMBARDI
GEORGE EARL EKBERG
In 1971, while working as a baker in San Jose, George meet and fell in love with Jacqueline and in 1972 he married Jackie in a small family ceremony at their house on Cree Drive. George not just married Jackie but also became the step father to her beautiful children James Derek Marshall, Michael David Marshall and Robin Donnell Marshal, which he raised as his own. In 1975 they welcomed their youngest child Hilleary Asenthe Ekberg into their Brady Bunch Family. In 1977, George and Jackie moved their clan to Gilroy, in the house that would be known as “The Ranch” to the family. George and his family raised horses, pigs, rabbits and chickens and he worked multiple jobs to support his family. In 1981 George was hired as the Baker for the Flying Lady restaurant in Morgan Hill, where he became close friends with Irv Perch and his family. All his surviving children at one point or another worked at the restaurant in one capacity or another, but his most trusted co-worker was James’ Best Friend Jon Michael Cicairos, who became very close with George and learned a lot of life lessons from him and who George and Jackie treated as their other ‘son’. George was an active member of the San Jose & Gilroy communities and helped coach many young athletes to learn the games of baseball, softball, golf and yes even bowling. He enjoyed going square dancing, bowling, golf, singing, coaching, fishing and working on the ranch. He was also a social butterfly and no matter where he went in town, he would run into someone he knew and strike up a conversation about their family or golf, much to the chagrin of his children, who would arrive home some days with George already knowing what they had done. He loved to watch golf on Sundays and loved to pull out his guitar and just sing at any gathering. George spent his final years retired from work and enjoying his family when they would come and visit him and Jackie at the ranch. Services for George will be 3:00 pm on May 26, 2019 at Habing Family Funeral Home located at 129 4th Street, Gilroy CA 95020. All are also welcomed to attend the gathering at the family ranch shortly after the services to commemorate George’s life.
