FRESNO SERVES UP FIRST ANNUAL GARLIC FESTIVAL Jaqueline McCool Reporter
Is there room in the garlic game for two California cities? Fresno is coming after Gilroy’s garlic crown.
Gilroy’s official city motto is “The City with the Spice for Life” and it proudly proclaims itself “Garlic Capital of the World,” but there’s another city now claiming ownership of the cloves. On May 28, the city of Fresno hosted its first-ever

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra is accusing the Trump administration of “trying to exact political retribution” by pulling federal funds from the state’s HighSpeed Rail project. In a lawsuit filed May 21 in US District Court in San Francisco by the state of California against the Federal Railroad Administration and
the US Department of Transportation, Becerra is seeking to prevent the withdrawal of nearly $1 billion in federal funding California’s High-Speed Rail project. The lawsuit follows the Federal Railroad Administration's accusation last week that California’s rail authority “failed to make reasonable progress on the project.” In its complaint, the state seeks declaratory and injunctive relief and charges that the federal government’s decision to pull the grant agreement “was precipitated by President [Donald] Trump’s overt hostility to California, its

NEW ANIMAL SHELTER This is how the new Santa Clara County Animal Shelter in San Martin will look when it opens in 2021.
Shelter rescues pets CONSTRUCTION OF NEW SHELTER IS BEHIND SCHEDULE Staff Report
The County of Santa Clara’s Animal Services Department, which includes the San Martin animal shelter and the animal care and control unit, has achieved 94.3 percent live release rate—one of the best in California. The current rate of pet adoptions from the San Martin shelter represents the shelter’s highest percentage ever, according to a county press release. A no-kill shelter achieves a rate of 90 percent or greater; the county’s shelter has successfully achieved this status since 2013. Shelters must commit to save healthy or treatable animals
even when a shelter is full, and to only utilize euthanasia for terminally ill animals or those considered dangerous to public safety. The shelter also is an open admission shelter, meaning all animals are accepted from county service areas, regardless of temperament and condition. “I am proud of our animal shelter’s live release rate, especially since they take in all animals, regardless of their condition,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor, Mike Wasserman, whose district includes the shelter. “Our animal services team ensures that dogs, cats, horses, chickens, rabbits, and many other animals are rescued and provided forever homes.” A new state-of-the-art animal services center 20 times bigger than the current 40-year-old shelter is scheduled to open in 2021,

but construction is several months behind the schedule announced last fall. The new animal shelter campus will be located at the County Center on Highland Avenue in San Martin, 90 Highland Ave., in unincorporated Santa Clara County. The proposed animal shelter will include a one-story building, parking, livestock barn and pastures, and dog play yards spanning approximately 4.5 acres. The 37,000-square-foot one-story building would house functions such as the adoption area, animal holding and housing areas, spay and neuter clinic, veterinary medicine and support areas, administrative areas, and a community multi-use center. The existing county animal shelter is located at 12370 Murphy Ave., San Martin.

Fresno says its big garlic crop justifies title ➝ Garlic City. 1

Festival, promises the Fresno festival is not meant to rival Gilroy’s historic garlic weekend. De Young believes there’s enough of a garlic craving to support two festivals in the state. He said he’s been a fan of the Gilroy festival and wants to bring the same energy to the residents of Fresno. “We’re not looking to step on anyone’s toes,” said De Young. “We’re not looking to belittle Gilroy.” The Gilroy Garlic Festival has been designated the World’s Largest Garlic Festival in the Guinness Book of World Records. Bryan Bowe, director of the Gilroy Garlic Festival, said last year’s attendance was 80,000. Bowe shared De Young’s sentiment, that there is enough garlic love to go around. “I think the more communities that are celebrating garlic, the better. I’m glad that Fresno is spicing things up,” said Bowe. Ken Christopher, executive vice president of Christopher Ranch, didn’t mince words when defending Gilroy’s standing as the Garlic City. Christopher Ranch processes and ships 100 million pounds of garlic annually. “Christopher Ranch is the country’s largest garlic grower,” said Christopher. “At any given time, Gilroy, California is home to the North American continent’s largest home for garlic.” He said he wished the Fresh Farmers Market Association had reached out to Christopher Ranch to do cross marketing and hoped that Fresno would in the future if its festival continues. In an interview, Christopher said Fresno’s festival is “cute, but it’s not necessarily close to anything we’re doing.” De Young said Fresno didn’t want to cause a stink with its new festival. “We’re just looking to create our own event and our own sale,” said De Young.”I think there’s plenty of garlic eaters to sustain two garlic festivals, if not more, later down the road.”

Support animal, pet rescue efforts All Animal Rescue & Friends will be attending Paws in the Park. This event is South County’s inaugural dog festival and is being held on Saturday, June 1 on the soccer field at Gavilan Community College in Gilroy from 10am to 3pm. Paws in the Park is a free event and is family friendly; dogs and their humans are invited to partake in all of the festivities. And what’s a dog event without puppies? All Animal Rescue & Friends will have some adorable puppies for you to meet, and just to sweeten the deal even more (if that's possible) there will also be some kittens. Sounds like a purrfectly pawsome day in the park! All Animal Rescue & Friends, also known in the community as AARF, is a 501(c)3 non-profit fosterbased rescue that primarily focuses on rescuing and reuniting lost/found animals, rescuing at-risk animals from local shelters and providing medical assistance and care to injured and under-age animals and rescue animals that fall victim to abuse and neglect.
FROM THE WEB
When people start wanting to go to Fresno for anything, I’ll start being worried.
Gilroy, Garlic City Christopher Ranch is obviously biased as Ken Christopher is from Gilroy and does business in Gilroy. Gilroy does not grow that much garlic. The amount they grow compared to Fresno is miniscule. Christopher Ranch is trying to twist words and facts. The only thing that is true is Gilroy may process the most garlic that people bring in there, including from Fresno. So if Gilroy wants to say they are the garlic capital because they process the most, fine, but to say they are the garlic capital because they grow the most is false. Fresno just stomps Gilroy in garlic production. The event they are throwing is not going to rival the Gilroy tradition. They merely added a theme for the weekly farmers market they had. And in doing so the facts came out that Fresno County actually demolishes Gilroy when it comes to growing garlic—it’s not even close. Fresno County grew 25,060 acres of garlic in 2017; Santa Clara County (Gilroy) grew 761 acres. In dollars, Fresno County brought in $144 million from growing the crop. Santa Clara County brought in $5.4 million. So it’s odd that Gilroy has that title. Then Gilroy business owner Christopher Ranch chimes in trying to skew those facts making it an apples to oranges thing, and says now Gilroy processes the most—well OK, that’s fine, but you don’t grow it, and the argument is done.
Christian Thomas Antunes de Anda Regardless of when it happens, if it takes place in the summer, it will be hot as hell and will not cool off in the evening like it does here. I don’t know anyone who travels to Fresno because they want to—and you couldn’t pay me to go! Haha. Looks like they’ll go to any lengths to get people to go to Fresno, though— even stealing another city’s idea. Cathy Eaton, via Facebook
Better trademark all garlic-related things, or we can lose like Santa Cruz did with Surf City to Huntington Beach. Alex Herrera, via Facebook
Fresno’s got nothing that Gilroy’s got. They’re just a wannabe because Gilroy knows what they’re doing. They just want to steal from Gilroy and take what Gilroy is doing, and say it’s theirs. Sorry, but this belongs to our town. Sharon Swank, via Facebook

Fresno is holding its alleged ‘Garlic Festival’ for a few hours in the parking lot of a movie theater. Not hardly a festival. More like a farmers market. LOL Jon Southerland,

Is any of the garlic actually grown in Gilroy? I lived there nearly eight years, and there is nothing Garlic City about Gilroy. A few small shops and a truck stop that sell a few things garlic-related, and that’s about it.

Matt Castro,
OMG, this is crazy.

Any true lover of garlic would approve of another garlic festival. More garlic festivals, I say. Who wouldn’t want to eat more food overloaded with garlic, butter, parsley, etc? It does not matter how many garlic festivals there are; that will not change what city is ‘Garlic Capital of the World.
If you’ve lived in Gilroy for eight years and never smelled garlic while driving down 101, I have a serious concern for your health. Tony Merino, via Facebook
The fields off of 101 south of Gilroy are all garlic. Those are the easiest to point out. But there are many others.

All Animals Rescue & Friends is partnering with Finding Rover, a free service that uses patented facial recognition technology to help reunite lost dogs and cats with their families. AARF is partnering with Finding Rover and will be sharing information about this exciting venture at Paws in the Park. Finding Rover is a free service that uses patented facial recognition technology to help reunite lost dogs and cats with their families! Jenifer Lepow and Gwen Dorcich, the co-founders of AARF, will be at Paws in the Park and would love to share information on this new partnership. Because of AARF’s active presence helping to reunite lost and found pets in our community, when they find a pet, they will be able to snap a photo and use the technology of the Finding Rover app to help find the owner; the same applies if someone in our community loses a pet. This is another tool, in addition to getting your pets microchipped, that can help reunite pets with their families. Additionally, people looking to adopt can see the dogs and cats that are available for adoption with AARF. AARF pets are all microchipped before they are adopted, and with their new partnership with Finding Rover, every dog and cat will also be preregistered in the Finding Rover database. Once the pet is adopted, the pet’s record can be automatically transferred to the adopters’ Finding Rover account as soon as the person who has taken the pet home registers with the email address on file. If that dog or cat ever gets lost in the future, using Finding Rover’s facial recognition will make bringing that pet back home a snap. We highly encourage everyone to register with a personal Finding Rover account by going to FindingRover.com. It just takes a minute to help bring your pet home faster, and it's completely free! This will only work if everyone is on board, so please join with AARF and get connected to the Finding Rover community. Gwen Dorcich is co-founder of All Animal Rescue & Friends. The lawsuit mentioned that the state rail authority’s long relationship with the Federal Railroad Administration took a turn for the worse with Trump administration. “In the last year … the FRA has stopped cooperating on the project, including refusing to process important environmental clearances, and to count hundreds of millions of dollars in state-funded expenditures toward California’s obligation to provide matching funds under the grant,” Becerra wrote in the complaint. The complaint continued: “On Feb. 19, 2019—one day after California and 15 other states filed suit to invalidate President Trump’s declaration of emergency at the southern border—President Trump tweeted that the suit was led by California, ‘the state that has wasted
billions of dollars on their out of control Fast Train, with no hope of completion.’ One minute later, he tweeted that the “failed Fast Train project in California . . . is hundreds of times more expensive than the desperately needed Wall.” Later that same day, in a curt, three-page letter, the FRA abruptly notified the authority of its intent to terminate the grant agreement.” The two plaintiffs identified in the case are the state of California and the High-Speed Rail Authority. There are four defendants named in the complaint: the US Department of Transportation, DOT Secretary Elaine Chao, the Federal Railroad Administration and FRA Administrator Ronald Batory. The complaint warns the loss of federal funding could cripple the project and portions of California’s economy. “FRA’s sudden decision to terminate the grant in violation of its own procedures and policies was arbitrary and capricious, an abuse of discretion, and contrary to law, and threatens to wreak significant
economic damage on the Central Valley and the state,” Becerra wrote. If the state were to obtain an injunction, the existing agreement between the Federal Railroad Administration and the High-speed Rail Authority would remain in effect until the lawsuit is resolved. The High-Speed Rail project has been in the works since 1993, with California voters passing Proposition 1A in 2008 to authorize $9.95 billion in general obligation bonds for the project. The high-speed rail has never been fully funded. In February, Newsom said in his State of the State address that he would be directing the authority to shift focus to the Central Valley line. This was addressed in the authority’s 2019 project update report along with the possibility that federal funding would be pulled from the project. In addition to the $929 million the railroad administration has pulled, it also threatened to take back the $2.5 billion in federal funding already given to the project.

DELIVERING Cougars starter Brenden Lodge pitched 4 2/3 solid innings to propel the Christopher High baseball team to its first Central Coast Section playoff championship in program history. Christopher knocked off Sacred Heart Cathedral 5-3 for the Division II title.
COUGARS WIN 1ST CCS TITLE IN PROGRAM HISTORY emanuel lee SportsEditor
Robert Eliason
Travis Romero and Ryan Dequin likened the Christopher High baseball team’s emotions and season to a never-ending thrill ride. “The season has been a roller coaster you can say,” said Dequin, who has been the coach of the Cougars for a total of eight years over two different stints. “The emotion drives us into that work ethic and keeps on building,” Romero said. “We ride that roller coaster and try to keep on going up and not come back down.” What goes up must come down, but in Christopher High’s case, they won’t be coming down anytime soon from a metaphorical standpoint. Waving a ride of emotion combined with fundamentally sound baseball, the No. 3 seed Cougars completed a storybook 2019 campaign with an impressive 5-3 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral in the Central Coast Section Division II playoff championship game at San Jose Municipal Stadium on Friday. The win was a historic one for Christopher, as it was the first CCS title in program history. “We finally did it, we finally did it,” said Romero, a senior utility and one of the team’s sparkplugs. “(For the 13 seniors on the team) we’ve been wanting this since freshmen year. (At that time) we knew we could be something special. I’m at a loss for words right
now. It’s crazy to finally be here, succeed and pull through.” No team uses emotion to its advantage more than the Cougars, who finished the season 23-8 by combining talent, determination and all-out hustle. When a team possesses those attributes, it usually results in a championship formula. All season long, Christopher had a penchant for extending innings and scoring runs by making hustle plays and being alert on the base paths. Nowhere was that more apparent than in the bottom of the third inning, when the Cougars turned a one-run deficit into a 4-1 lead they would never relinquish. Karson Mazotti reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning, and what looked to be a rather ho-hum inning turned into something much more. Romero followed by legging out an infield single—it was such a bang-bang play that the first base umpire could’ve called an out—and Cody Ahola entered as a pinch runner for Mazotti at second base. Andrew Kachel then hustled down the line for another infield single that plated Ahola before Jack Tomlinson walked to load the bases. Zach Griffin, the No. 5 hitter in the lineup, stroked a tworun single to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. Moments later, Griffin intentionally took a couple of big strides off first base to get in a rundown. His only goal? To force an errant throw or stay in a rundown long enough for Tomlinson to score—which is exactly what happened. The Cougars added an insurance run in the fifth inning, again with two outs. Singles from Kachel and Tomlinson is all it took for the run to score, as once again the Cougars used

alert base running to make Sacred Heart Cathedral pay. Tomlinson’s single advanced Kachel to third base, and on the play, Tomlinson noticed the SHC pitcher had his head down. Tomlinson was halfway to second base when the pitcher finally noticed, and the pursuit was on. Tomlinson eventually was tagged in the rundown, but not before Kachel crossed home plate to make it 5-2. The Cougars pride themselves on running hard to the bases on every play, and it paid off in a huge way. “The infield singles really helped us build our momentum,” Romero said. “We have to hustle.
We’re taught if we don’t give a hard 90 (sprinting to first base) during practice, we have to go all the way around the bases. So each time we give that hard 90 in a game, something good usually happens.” Said Dequin: “We got them in rundowns and stole runs without getting hits. We preach 90 feet whether it’s a ball in the dirt or whether it’s catching guys with their heads down.” Dequin had a conversation with his coaching staff the day before the game about making sure to give the base runners the proper read on balls in the dirt or any situation. “The best role we as coaches
could do is ball in the dirt reads,” he said. “It’s getting that extra 90 feet and that just moves on to everything.” Cougars starter Brenden Lodge got the job done, allowing two runs and three hits over 4 2/3 solid innings. The lone junior on a team that consists of 13 seniors and two sophomores, Lodge delivered in a stadium he’s familiar with, as his family has been to several San Jose Giants games over the years. Knowing that, Dequin wondered if Lodge would be too amped and excited for the start. Meanwhile, Lodge knew he would have to control his nerves. ➝ Baseball, page 15

Barnes will fulfill dream at Redlands GILROY HIGH TWO SPORT STANDOUT UTILIZES TWITTER AS A RECRUITING TOOL TO HELP EARN AN OFFER FROM D3 PROGRAM emanuel lee Sports Editor
2018-2019 wrestling season might have been his most impressive yet, considering Barnes was never quite 100 percent after he suffered a torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his left knee early in the football season. However, Barnes persevered and grinded out wins on the mat at his typical prolific rate, and he dominated his league and section competition. After wrestling in the 160 pound division, Barnes has spent the last couple of months bulking up in preparation for college football. Barnes’ junior season on the gridiron was his absolute best, as he rushed for 1,807 yards and 23 touchdowns while adding three more TDs receiving in leading the Mustangs to the first-ever CCS playoff title in program history. In terms of excelling in two sports, Barnes ranks among the very best Gilroy High athletes in the last decade, if not longer. Despite a gaudy resume, Barnes didn’t receive much attention from fouryear programs. However, De La Rosa saw some of Barnes’ highlight videos that were linked to Barnes’
Robert Eliason
When Joe Barnes received a direct message via Twitter from someone claiming to be an assistant football coach from the Redlands University, he did a double take and had an initial thought that was one of his friends might be playing a prank on him. “I wasn’t really sure what to think (since I had never talked to anyone from there),” the Gilroy High senior said. “I thought it was a joke at first, but then I checked out his profile and found out it was legit.” Turns out the person who was direct messaging Barnes was none other than Aaron De La Rosa, who is the defensive back coach and video coordinator of the Redlands football program. From there, the two kept in contact until Barnes received another huge surprise—an
offer in the mail about a month ago to play football for the Division III program. “I wasn’t expecting it,” Barnes said. “It was definitely a big surprise.” And a welcome one. Once Barnes and his parents looked over the numbers—Redlands is a private college, after all, with a high tuition rate—they were satisfied. It was official: Barnes would realize his dream of playing football at the four-year level. “It’s something that has been a goal of mine for a long time,” said Barnes, who had a ceremonial signing event at the school last Thursday. “Ever since I was a little kid—6 years old— my parents have been preparing me for this moment. They’re a big reason why I’ve gotten to this point.” Barnes was a two-sport standout at Gilroy High in football and wrestling. It was the latter sport where Barnes will go down as one of the most accomplished wrestlers at the school in recent memory, with four Central Coast Section championships to his credit and placing twice at the CIF State Tournament. The
NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE Mustangs senior Joe Barnes was all smiles at his ceremonial letter of intent signing last Thursday to play football at The Redlands University. Twitter account, and liked what he saw. “He said I was a hard runner and I stayed low,” Barnes said. “And that I knew how to read and hit my holes.” Barnes credits his
parents, Joseph and Jennifer, for always pushing him and making sacrifices along the way. “They helped me believe I could do it,” he said. “They drove me around and made money so we
would be able to travel (to wrestling tournaments across the country). Ever since I was little, it’s been my dream to play college football or wrestle. I fell in love with football a little more.”

“Definitely the stress got to me a little bit, I’ll admit it,” said Lodge, whose demeanor and performance belied that fact. “I was trying to take it all in, and it’s definitely a different sight seeing a lot of faces behind that backstop. I knew I had to contain myself. When coach told me I was going to start this game, I knew it (the experience) was going to be something different.” Lodge had his fastball working, located his changeup in the third and fourth innings and utilized
a slider that got the SHC hitters off-balance. The 5-foot-11, 155-pound Lodge was ecstatic after watching his teammates score four times in the third. “I was pumped up,” he said. “I’ve got my run support, the game is on me and I had the attitude that no one is going to beat me. It was the energy I needed to feed off from.” Matt Peters tossed the final 2 1/3 innings to seal the outcome, four days after throwing a complete game in a 5-4 win over St. Ignatius in the quarterfinals. With a pitching trio of Jake Ornellas, Peters
and Lodge, the Cougars were strong on the mound even a year after graduating workhorses Jonathan Newman and Sean Straub. “I know Jake and Peters really looked up to Sean and Newman because they are a lefty-righty duo just like those two guys,” Romero said. “So this year they knew they had some big shoes to fill, and they succeeded, which is amazing. And Lodge as the only junior on the team, a lone ranger, he came up, was taught in our ways and succeeded as well.” Before the season
started, Lodge envisioned a moment like this, knowing the team was championship-caliber. “I was trying to picture it in my head from the very beginning that this was the team to get here to the finals,” he said. “(So given the responsibility of starting) I knew I had to capitalize. We have 13 seniors, and I didn’t want to let them down.” Said Dequin: “Brenden was phenomenal and I had a gut feeling he would be alright.” Christopher finished with seven hits—all singles—two each from Kachel

and Griffin. The team was resourceful in scoring five runs, playing heads-up baseball and creating situations in which the opposing team needed to make the proper play and failed to do so. Every time the Cougars made a key play, they got emotional, which can backfire sometimes. However, Christopher used that emotion and carried with it a confidence that never wavered. In the trophy and postgame celebration, the players shouted chants that only they themselves knew the meaning of. Dequin said that as a coach, displaying a lot
of emotion can be frustrating at times, so he has to employ the delicate balancing act of letting the kids have fun while at the same time respecting the competition. “I talked with the Sacred Heart coach before (the game) and said sometimes I don’t even understand what these guys say,” Dequin said. “I try to make sure it’s done with class, integrity and is always directed toward our guys. Sometimes what they say is out of left field, but they really use that emotion and rode with it. They did their chants and used that to pump themselves up, and it was huge.”

MARK HILTON ASHFORD DECEMBER 27, 1953 – MAY 18, 2019
M
ark Hilton Ashford of Gilroy, CA died peacefully on May 18, 2019.
Mark was born to Calvin and Peggy Ashford on December 27, 1953 in Santa Ana, CA. We will forever remember his many talents. He was an artist, an actor, a poet, a mechanic and one heck of a bass player. He was loved by his family and friends and will be missed dearly.
George was born to William Earl and Gladys Juanita Ekberg in Ketchum, Oklahoma. A few year later the Ekberg’s moved to Caldwell Idaho where they lived for about 7 years before moving to Springfield Oregon, where George graduated from Springfield High School. During high school George enjoyed wrestling, pole vaulting, track and field, singing in his high school choir, fishing, hunting and getting into trouble with his best friend Richard ‘Butch’ Morten. Together George and Butch enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves and where stationed together in the 2nd 155 MM Gun Battery in Eugene Oregon. George achieved the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged. While stationed at Camp Pendleton, he was introduced to his first wife Barbara Walton. They were married in 1963 and moved to San Jose when George left the Marine Corps and two years later welcomed their daughter Georgiana Leola Ekberg into their family. In 1971, while working as a baker in San Jose, George

meet and fell in love with Jacqueline and in 1972 he married Jackie in a small family ceremony at their house on Cree Drive. George not just married Jackie but also became the step father to her beautiful children James Derek Marshall, Michael David Marshall and Robin Donnell Marshal, which he raised as his own. In 1975 they welcomed their youngest child Hilleary Asenthe Ekberg into their Brady Bunch Family. In 1977, George and Jackie moved their clan to Gilroy, in the house that would be known as “The Ranch” to the family. George and his family raised horses, pigs, rabbits and chickens and he worked multiple jobs to support his family. In 1981 George was hired as the Baker for the Flying Lady restaurant in Morgan Hill, where he became close friends with Irv Perch and his family. All his surviving children at one point or another worked at the restaurant in one capacity or another, but his most trusted co-worker was James’ Best Friend Jon Michael Cicairos, who became very close with George and learned a lot of life lessons from him and who George and Jackie treated as their other ‘son’. George was an active member of the San Jose & Gilroy communities and helped coach many young athletes to learn the games of baseball, softball, golf and yes even bowling. He enjoyed going square dancing, bowling, golf, singing, coaching, fishing and working on the ranch. He was also a social butterfly and no matter where he went in town, he would run into someone he knew and strike up a conversation about their family or golf, much to the chagrin of his children, who would arrive home some days with George already knowing what they had done. He loved to watch golf on Sundays and loved to pull out his guitar and just sing at any gathering. George spent his final years retired from work and enjoying his family when they would come and visit him and Jackie at the ranch. Services for George will be 3:00 pm on May 26, 2019 at Habing Family Funeral Home located at 129 4th Street, Gilroy CA 95020. All are also welcomed to attend the gathering at the family ranch shortly after the services to commemorate George’s life.
