FRESNO SERVES UP FIRST ANNUAL GARLIC FESTIVAL Jaqueline McCool Reporter
Is there room in the garlic game for two California cities? Fresno is coming after Gilroy’s garlic crown.
Gilroy’s official city motto is “The City with the Spice for Life” and it proudly proclaims itself “Garlic Capital of the World,” but there’s another city now claiming ownership of the cloves. On May 28, the city of Fresno hosted its first-ever
the event’s Facebook page. “Join the California Fresh Farmers Market Association for the inaugural and soon-to-be annual Fresno Garlic Festival!! Enjoy an evening celebrating the world’s most addictive spice—garlic!” “be a part of history— our
Garlic Festival, and is calling itself “the true Garlic Capital of the United States.” “Attention Garlic Lovers! Are you ready for Fresno’s own Garlic Festival?” the California Fresh Farmers Market Association boasts on
taking back the crown as the ‘garlic capital of the United States! Fresno IS the true garlic capital of the United States—not Gilroy. Fresno County grows many times more garlic than any other county in the United States. It’s a fact!” Gilroy has branded

challenge to his border wall initiatives, and what he called the ‘green disaster’ high-speed rail project.” Gov. Gavin Newsom threatened the legal action after the May 16 announcement pulling the federal funds. “Just as we have seen from the Trump administration’s attacks on our clean air standards, our immigrant communities and in countless other areas, the Trump administration is trying to exact political retribution on our state,” said Newsom. “This is California’s money, appropriated by Congress, and we will vigorously defend it in court.” ➝ High-speed, 8

the US Department of Transportation, Becerra is seeking to prevent the withdrawal of nearly $1 billion in federal funding California’s High-Speed Rail project. The lawsuit follows the Federal Railroad Administration's accusation last week that California’s rail authority “failed to make reasonable progress on the project.” In its complaint, the state seeks declaratory and injunctive relief and charges that the federal government’s decision to pull the grant agreement “was precipitated by President [Donald] Trump’s overt hostility to California, its
