This year’s Democratic state convention in San Francisco offered a select group of party regulars a sneak preview of Democratic campaign themes. Included among the 3,400 delegates at the May 31-June 2 convention were local elected

officials and party workers from Congress member for the 19th district, Zoe Lofgren to State Assemblymember for District 30, Robert Rivas. Rivas called the meeting, “a convention with a lot of optimism, a lot of energy.” He and Lofgren saw the weekend as an opportunity for Democrats to build strength coming off the successful 2018 midterm elections. Lofgren said the presidential candidate speeches helped introduce some lesser known Democrats.

illegal firearms and devices discovered during a search at a Gilroy home.

Police: Two arrested in city with illegal firearms SWAT TEAM SERVED SEARCH WARRANTS IN MAY 30 RAIDS Staff report

Two Gilroy residents were arrested on suspicion of illegal firearms charges after the Gilroy/Morgan Hill SWAT team raided their homes May 30, according to authorities. Officers with the Gilroy/Morgan Hill SWAT team served multiple search warrants Thursday for suspected firearms violations, reads a press release from the Gilroy Police Department. Investigators had learned that illegal firearms parts were being ordered from outside

the country to residences in Gilroy. Specifically, the residents had ordered “small device switches” that can be easily installed on a Glock handgun to convert the semiautomatic pistol to fire like a fully automatic weapon, police explained. “When these are installed on a Glock, one trigger pull will fire all of the rounds in a magazine until the magazine is empty,” according to police. One of the search warrants was served at a home on the 7200 block of Princeton Place, just a short walk west of Glen View Elementary School. During the search, officers found a fully automatic shortbarreled AR-15 rifle, several

firearms with missing serial numbers and a fully automatic Glock switch, police said. Abdulrahman Mohamad Abdulrahman, 24, was arrested on suspicion of illegally possessing these items, as well as other weapons violations. The SWAT team also served a search warrant on the 9200 block of Kern Avenue in northwest Gilroy. At that home, police arrested 25-year-old Nathan Lewis on suspicion of possession of four illegal Glock switches and a stolen handgun, according to police. The investigations were conducted by the Gilroy Police AntiCrime Team and the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team, according to the press release.

The Santa Clara County Planning Commission voted 4-3 on May 23 to reject plans for a Cordoba Center mosque and cemetery in San Martin. Instead, the commission tabled the item to the Aug. 22 meeting and directed planning staff to come back to that session with findings for a project half the size, as well as one that is threequartersof the size proposed by the center. Center representatives will need to decide if they would like to go back to the drawing board and redraw plans for the multi-use project. Members have previously said they needed the 20,000-square-foot space to accommodate the center’s membership. Ultimately, the planning commissioners who voted against the project—Bob Levy, Kathy Schmidt, Erin Gil and Vicki Moore—said the size and scale of the proposed mosque, community center, cemetery and related facilities were not consistent with the county’s General Plan. Supporters in the room were visibly upset, but not surprised: For a project that has encountered obstacles in every step, another roadblock was not unexpected. An official statement by the center read, “Our

collective faith gives us strength to endure through these final stages of what has been a very long and arduous journey.” Center board member Hamdy Abbass said at press time that there had not been a decision on how the group will proceed with the project, but that board members would be meeting with the project developer and legal counsel to discuss next steps. Abbass said the process has been frustrating. “That is the most scrutinized project that has ever come out of Santa Clara County,” Abbass told this paper. Prior to the May 23 planning commission meeting, county planning staff had recommended the commission approve the project with the mitigation measures. The San Martin Advisory Committee met twice in the two weeks leading up to the planning commission meeting to discuss the Cordoba Center, but could not reach a majority-supported recommendation. The advisory committee’s meeting notes that were passed on to the planning commission said the San Martin committee thought the project should be scaled back to half the proposed size. The advisory committee’s recommendation would not have been binding in the planning commission's decision. The Cordoba Center proposal doesn’t require a supervisor vote for any piece of the project aside from the proposed cemetery plan.

allegations against former chair of the state democratic party, Eric Bauman, forced him to resign last November, and the convention tapped Los Angeles labor leader, Rusty Hicks as the new chair with a solid majority. Rivas attended the convention and supported Hicks in the state party chair election. Rivas said he was looking for a chair who would pay attention to the various wings of the Democratic party in all parts of the state. Rivas told this newspaper he was looking forward to “really working with [Hicks] that the California Democratic party extends beyond San Francisco and Los Angeles.” “I’ve had multiple conversations with Rusty about where I come from,” said Rivas. “He was very receptive.” Among South County Democratatic leaders at the convention, the consensus was that the convention represented a

both believed that California’s new position as an early voting state made presidential candidates focus more intently on the issues that California is facing. Lofgren said that problems like housing shortages are rarely talked about by presidential candidates or made a part of presidential platforms, but she believed the new voting schedule caused candidates to speak about issues like housing. Neither Rivas nor Lofgren endorsed a candidate, but Rivas said he was impressed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren over the weekend. He told this newspaper he was looking for a candidate that was going to take the time to address some of California’s problems and work to mend the relationship between California and the federal government that has been fractured during the Trump administration. Rivas said, “As the most populous state in the county, our state deserves attention.”

cathartic healing point heading into what is sure to be a tough fight in 2020. Despite some new veiled potshots at Biden—without naming him—by Warren and Buttigieg, a majority of the speakers focused on President Donald Trump. Big issues like immigration and Medicare for All got mostly passing references, and the May 31 shooting deaths in Virginia Beach were only targeted by single candidate, Sen. Cory Booker. Lofgren, who represents California’s 19th district Congressional District, is head of California’s congressional delegation. She spoke at the convention on June 1, with a speech that focused on organizing Democrats going into the down ballot races in 2020. “I think [the convention] went remarkably well,” Lofgren told this paper. “I think the various presidential candidates had their fans and supporters but i think it was generally collegial.” Rivas and Lofgren

As the question of whether to impeach President Donald Trump loomed over the California Democratic Convention the weekend of May 31, local representatives continued to resist the pressure to advocate impeachment. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi grew more emboldened in her calls to hold Trump accountable during her speech at the convention. Though Pelosi has taken a cautious approach to investigations of the Trump administration, endorsing subpoenas now tied up in courts, she told Democrats assembled in San Francisco on June 1, “We will also investigate to hold this president accountable.” The roomful of delegates filled with chants of “impeach, impeach” after Pelosi asked, “Why is it that our president won’t defend our democracy to this foreign threat?” Nationally, about 70 percent of Democrats support impeachment, and some of the 14 presidential candidates also called for impeachment. However, South County Democratic Congress members Rep. Zoe

Lofgren and Rep. Jimmy Panetta are following the speaker’s go-slow approach, with calls for continued investigations instead of an immediate impeachment inquiry. Lofgren told this newspaper, “There is a process that needs to be taken.” In a series of tweets, Panetta said that in a significant investigation, “all Congressional investigatory tools, authority of the judicial and laws of our nation must be observed.” Presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris said within the first three lines of her speech to the convention that Trump should be impeached, prompting more than 3,000 party faithful to rise from their seats on June 1. Candidates Sen. Elizabeth Warren, South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg and former Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke joined the former California attorney general in calling for immediate impeachment proceedings. A week after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s first public statement on his report, Lofgren held firm on her stance for investigations, not impeachment, in a written statement she released on Twitter. In an interview, she told this newspaper that despite the convention’s calls to impeach, she believed there was

not yet enough evidence to begin impeachment. Lofgren represents the 19th district in California, which includes San Jose, Morgan Hill and parts of Gilroy. As a young lawyer, she was a staff attorney in the Watergate probe of President RIchard Nixon, and she said in that case there had been sufficient evidence. As a member of the Judiciary Committee and chair of the Committee on House Administration, which oversees federal elections, Lofgren is heavily involved in the investigations into Trump. She said she understood that voters may fear that not holding Trump accountable through impeachment would set a dangerous precedent, but emphasized that getting the backup evidentiary materials from the report is a necessary first step. Panetta is the representative for the 20th district, which includes half of Gilroy and all of San Benito County. “Special Counsel Mueller and the report provided a solid foundation upon which Congress will continue to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities to protect the security of our nation and its elections and pursue an investigation into any alleged obstruction of justice by the (executive branch) to conduct and ensure compliance with such a serious and significant investigation.”

GPD are a bunch of Redcoats. “Shall not be infringed.” Full auto isn’t more efficient; it’s worse, actually. I don’t agree with the stolen guns they had in their possession, but the Airsoft parts they put on a Glock isn’t a big deal. This state is so anti-Second Amendment. You can’t open-carry in California at all, and only certain counties issue concealedcarry permits, usually the more American parts of California. It’s crazy that if my gun holds more than 10 rounds, I get in more trouble than if I assault someone. I’ve shot multiple full-auto firearms. They’re inaccurate; they’re meant for suppression. You can hit more targets accurately with semi-auto. Plus, it’s a handgun, so at full auto you’re not going to hit anything. But what do I know? I’m only a firearms instructor.

Jobs are best solution

L

ast month, the Federal Reserve System issued a report on “the economic well-being of U.S. households” and it contained a rather disturbing bit of data. “If faced with an unexpected expense of $400,” a survey of American households found, “61 percent of adults say they would cover it with cash, savings or a credit card paid off at the next statement—a modest improvement from the prior year.” Turning that around, 39 percent of American adults say they couldn’t readily cover an unexpected $400 expense—for a car repair, perhaps, or an emergency room visit. The survey found that two-thirds of them “would borrow or sell something to pay for the expense” and the remainder “would not be able to cover the expense at all.” Not surprisingly, that 39 percent number coincides rather neatly, if unfortunately, with poverty in California. The Census Bureau says that California has the nation’s highest level of poverty when the cost of living is included in the calculation, with about 20 percent of its 40 million residents impoverished. The Public Policy Institute of California, using a similar methodology, calculates that another 20 percent are living in “near-poverty.” It’s not a stretch to conclude, therefore, that the 40 percent of Californians in economic distress probably are incapable of meeting a sudden $400 expense, which brings us to Assembly Bill 539, which passed the Assembly on a 60-4 vote on the same day that the Federal Reserve report was released. The measure, carried by Assemblywoman Monique Limón, a Santa Barbara Democrat, is aimed at curbing the very high-interest loans that poor Californians often take out to meet their living costs because they are unable to qualify for conventional credit. It would place a 36 percent annual interest rate cap on loans made by statelicensed lenders, more than a third of which have interest rates above 100 percent,

according to the Department of Business Oversight. Such ultra-high rates are, a legislative analysis of the bill says, “a relatively new phenomenon in California,” growing from 8,468 such loans in 2009 to more than 350,000 per year now, totaling more than $1 billion. Critics call that “predatory lending” that takes advantage of poor people, who often lack the education or consumer awareness to steer clear of these legal loan sharks. Unable to afford the high payments such loans demand, their unpaid balances are often folded into new loans with high fees and interest. Limón says she wants to affect the “small number of lenders” that specialize in such loans. “I’ve worked hard to find a compromise,” she told the Assembly, saying her bill would “benefit both consumers and responsible lenders alike.” The legislation, now pending in the Senate, is clearly a sincere effort to protect the poor. However, it does nothing about the underlying fact that so many Californians live on the edges of financial precipices and turn to high-interest lenders in desperation when cars break down, when landlords demand rent, or when some other sudden expense rears its ugly head. The bill is one of dozens of legislative measures that seek to alleviate the effects of California’s embarrassingly high poverty. There is, however, not nearly enough political action on poverty at the source, such as building more housing to bring down its cost, getting more kids through high school, improving skills to fill well-paying jobs now going unfilled for a lack of trained workers, and/or making California more attractive to investment in more jobs. We sometimes lose sight of the wellproven fact that the best anti-poverty program is a good job.

You can't even legally open-carry your legal firearm in Santa Clara County. It's legit illegal to even have your legal gun on you unless it is locked in your trunk. Meanwhile, the criminals here have guns, which I know for a fact (and so do you). Good luck protecting your family from the criminals here in good ole criminal-friendly California with your locked-up and unloaded firearm—if the county will even let you have one at all. So you want people making guns into even more efficient killing machines so that they can do what? Protect us from the tyranny of government? Yeah, I’m sure that’s why these two were doing what they were. Care to explain how pressing the trigger once to shoot all your bullets is less efficient than having to press each time you fire? Who do you think these guys were? Salt-of-the-earth citizens just trying to protect their families? You don’t need illegal, fully automatic weapons to do that.

GILROY DISPATCH

Grads offer inspiration TOP ACHIEVERS FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 SHARE THEIR MEMORIES

Barbara, San Jose State University, Monterey Bay State University, San Francisco State University MAJOR: Computer

Scott Forstner Reporter

Each year, the Gilroy Dispatch profiles a few outstanding soon-to-be Gilroy Unified School District graduates. Selected from recommendations of staff at Christopher and Gilroy High Schools, these seniors represent some of the best Gilroy has to offer. Their comments here are in response to a common set of questions. These students have navigated the labyrinth of high school, and inspire others by their optimistic outlook, refreshing attitudes and heartfelt honesty. In addition to celebrating them, their families and their mentors, it is time to celebrate all of the graduating seniors in the class of 2019 for their accomplishments and wish them the best of luck and a fulfilling future.

GILROY HIGH SCHOOL Gina Barbaglia COLLEGE: UC Santa

Barbara

OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Davis

MAJOR: Biology GOAL: I hope to become

a dermatologist after graduate school.

MEMORIES: Being able to attend the Garlic Festival each year. It brings the community together and is a great way to spend quality time with friends while enjoying delicious food. My most memorable moment of high school has been beating Christopher in field hockey every year!

Michelle Quach COLLEGE: University of San Francisco OTHER ACCEPTANCES: UC Davis, UC Santa

science/mathematics GOAL: Computer

scientist

MEMORIES: The best

thing about Gilroy is its diversity. Meeting all of my great friends and teachers.

Christopher Arellano Reyes COLLEGE: Santa Clara

University

OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

Chapman University, University of San Diego, University of California Santa Barbra, University of California Davis, Waitlisted Stanford University

MAJOR: Biology

pre-med

GOAL: Attend medical school and become a

neurosurgeon.

MEMORIES: Gilroy provides that small

community feeling. It allows me to know and connect very well with most of my community friends and adults. Gilroy as well is a very supportive community in any type of situation, coming together in very tough and heartbreaking times and in celebratory times. The community of Gilroy is also very diverse and is a great community to learn about many different cultures. My most memorable moment of high school, education wise, was doing my independent project in biotechnology II. It involved putting certain plants in the opposite environment to see the effects of it and how it relates to climate change in the real world. Classmatewise it was creating a satire video project for AP English language and composition. It was very memorable because I worked on it with some of my best friends from high school, and was very hilarious when filming it.

Diego Hsu COLLEGE: University of Southern California OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

UCLA

MAJOR: Economics GOAL: Attorney MEMORIES: Meeting lifelong friends through Little League and winning the state championship together. Junior year, watching the football team win CCS.

Mason Gumin COLLEGE: Purdue

University

OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

Santa Clara University MAJOR: Engineering GOAL: Have a

successful career in engineering and travel the world. MEMORIES: All the great

friendships I've made here in my four years of high school basketball.

CHRISTOPHER HIGH SCHOOL Nietnimol Khay COLLEGE: Stanford

University

OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

University of Southern California, Santa Clara University, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Irvine

MAJOR: Human biology GOAL: Physician MEMORIES: Having lived in Gilroy my entire life, I've come to love the incredibly diverse and vibrant community that can be found here. There are so many avenues

of support to be found through the people who make Gilroy the wonderful place it is, and I will always be grateful for everything this town has contributed to my development as an individual. I would have to say that my most memorable moments from high school have been made with my friends in Christopher High School ASB. Seeing the impact that we have on the student body by planning various events throughout the year has been extremely rewarding, but beyond that, our student government class is truly like a big family. Being part of that family and working with such motivated young leaders has given me priceless memories that I’ll cherish for years to come.

Sarah Starks COLLEGE: University of

California, Davis

OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

I only applied to Davis.

MAJOR: Evolution, ecology and biodiversity GOAL: Restoration and

conservation biologist; start a non-profit organization to travel, educate people about their local environment, plant trees in their communities, and let them know what they can do to help make our world a healthier place.

MEMORIES: Gilroy has been a place I’ve called

home my whole life. It's such a beautiful, tightknit community. Throughout my life here, I've gotten to know so many peers so closely, from elementary to middle school through high school. Living here, you can’t even go to the grocery store without seeing someone you've known for years leading to a long catching-up conversation. My most memorable moments of high school will be the CHS Homecoming weeks. Every weekday, we would work on our outrageous floats awaiting the parade. Then we’d have the Homecoming game that Friday where royalty would be announced, and then the next day, the Homecoming dance. It’s always such an exciting week full of so much spirit. I will miss dressing up crazy for our spirit weeks; it always made the days at school so exciting.

The most memorable moment in high school for me was going on the CAL-SOAP college tour trip with my friends. This trip allowed me to explore universities down south such as UCLA, USC, Cal Poly and others.

disadvantaged people who cannot afford a quality defense. MEMORIES: Definitely the smell of garlic constantly being in the air. At this point it’s become a very comforting scent and a sign of home. Even though it can get obnoxious at times, I know I will miss it when I leave for Illinois.

COLLEGE:

Northwestern University OTHER ACCEPTANCES:

University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, University of Southern California, Johns Hopkins University

MAJOR: Political science with a minor in music. I plan on attending law school after completing my undergraduate degree. GOAL: To become a private defense attorney and eventually do pro bono work for

My most memorable moment in high school is without a doubt when I first performed as drum major for the Midnight Pride Marching Band. It was nerve-wracking being up on the podium in front of so many other peers. Conducting the band is such an important responsibility that I knew I couldn’t be making any mistakes up there. The leadership involved with being drum major has taught me so much, and I wouldn’t trade my experience in the band for anything.

Gavilan is looking for 1967 alumni 100TH GALA CELEBRATION IN SEPTEMBER Scott Forstner Reporter

Special to the Dispatch

Gavilan College is digging deep into its roots for the upcoming 100th Centennial Gala celebration and wants to honor its Class of 1967, the last graduating class from when the community college was located in Hollister. “It’s proven extremely difficult to locate alumni as there isn’t a database with their names,” said Gavilan Joint Community College District Trustee Irma Gonzalez, who did find an old program from the 1967 commencement. “We’re hoping that perhaps someone will recognize a name of a relative or a friend and contact us.” In that 1967 class, there were 149 graduates listed on the program, with 87 earning an associate in arts degree, 29 an associate in science degree, 12 a certificate in aviation, 11 a certificate in business, and five in each cosmetology and drafting. Gonzalez, who was elected to the Gavilan board in November 2018, and her husband are both Gavilan alumni; he served on the Gavilan Student Senate during his time there. Gonzalez’s brotherin-law Raul Gonzalez was the last Associated Student Body president at Gavilan’s Hollister campus. “It’s been a long road making contact with our alumni, many who are unaware of our Gala,” said Gonzalez, who can be reached at igonzalez@ gavilan.edu. The “Gavilan Through The Decades” Gala event, set for 5:30-9pm Sept. 7 at the 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. campus in Gilroy, will allow attendees to look back at its first 100 years. Gala guests will take

a nostalgic and informative stroll through the decades of Gavilan’s history from the 1920s to today. Each decade will feature areas of academia highlighted with education tables, as well as food stations with themed food from each decade, wine stations, live music, photo booths, students in period costume, formal portraits, live auction, silent auction, strolling card magician in a tuxedo and a string quartet. “We are really looking forward to this celebration, and look forward to welcoming the community to campus for the party of the century,” said Gavilan President Kathleen Rose. Faculty member Leah Halper found and interviewed some of the early alumni, including Muriel Brem and Norma Trevino, but Gavilan is looking for more, and for artifacts (photos, class schedules, publications) from San Benito Junior College. Alumni are invited to submit information, memories, and stories at gavilan.edu/about/foundation/your-galivan-college-experience.php. Alumni stories will be showcased at the Centennial Gala on Sept. 7. Gavilan College was originally established in 1919 as San Benito County Junior College and operated under that title until 1963, when a new community college district was drawn that included both San Benito and southern Santa Clara Counties. A successful 1966 bond measure then funded the construction of the present main campus in Gilroy. In the spring of 1997, instructional sites were added in Hollister and Morgan Hill. Most recently, Gavilan opened its Coyote campus on Bailey Road, home to the public safety training academy and other programs such as Drone Technology.

DO YOU KNOW THEM? This Gavilan College commencement program

from 1967 is the starting point for college’s alumni search.

926 GIL - Public Notice NOTICE OF A PUBLIC HEARING OF THE GILROY PLANNING COMMISSION TO CONSIDER A ZONING AMENDMENT REQUEST THIS PLANNING COMMISSION PUBLIC HEARING WILL BE HELD on Thursday, June 20, 2019 at 6:30 p.m., or as

soon thereafter as the item can be heard, in the Gilroy City Council Chambers at City Hall, 7351 Rosanna Street, Gilroy, California. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Planning Commission will consider a Tentative Map application requesting subdivision of approximately 125.32 acres for build-out of the Nebbiolo, Malvasia, and The Glen neighborhoods of the Glen Loma Ranch Specific Plan. The approved Glen Loma Ranch Specific Plan anticipates residential land uses at various densities in these neighborhoods. The requested map proposes to create 102 Village Lots in the Nebbiolo neighborhood; 46 Compact Lots in the Malvasia neighborhood; and 23 Compact Lots in the The Glen neighborhood, for a total of 171 residential lots. This subdivision would also create two public open space parcels for the construction of the Santa Teresa trail; 22 private open space parcels that will be maintained by the homeowners' association; three lots for future development; and associated public and private streets. This request is for mapping purposes only, and details of the individual development of these lots are not a part of this proposal. Future buildout of these lots will be in accordance with the specific plan. The project site is located within the Glen Loma Ranch Specific Plan area and is commonly known as Nebbiolo, Malvasia, and The Glen at Glen Loma Ranch. The subject site is located north of Santa Teresa Boulevard, between Merlot Drive and Miller Avenue. The site comprises APN # 80818-003, 808-18-024, 808-18025, and 808-18-026. On November 7, 2005, the City Council certified the Glen Loma Ranch Specific Plan Environmental Impact Report (EIR) with 52 mitigation measures and adopted the Glen Loma Ranch Specific Plan. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines section 15182, Residential Projects Pursuant to a Specific Plan, exempts residential projects pursuant to a specific plan from further environmental review under CEQA, as long as the project meets the requirements of that section. Staff has determined that the proposed subdivision meets the requirements of section 15182, and therefore, no additional CEQA analysis is required. Applicant: Tim Filice representing the Glen Loma Group. (TM 18-02) A detailed description of the proposal is on file with the Community Development Department at City Hall. The staff report for the proposal may also be viewed on the City website (www. cityofgilroy.org) by 5:00 p.m. the Friday before the meeting.

GAVILAN SOFTBALL

SPORTS SHORTS

IN CHARGE After serving as an assistant coach the last two years, Bobby Reggiani takes over the reins for the Gavilan

Football practice Any freshmen that is interested in playing football at Christopher High should plan on attending practice starting June 10 at 4 p.m. Freshmen can meet in front of the weight room. Please bring T-shirts, shorts and cleats. For more information or questions, please contact Tim Pierleoni.

GAVILAN’S SOFTBALL COACH SET TO START A PROGRAM REVIVAL

Prestigious honors Christopher High freshman Ella Rodriguez has earned 2018 High School AllAmerican honors from U.S. Paralympics Track and Field in the discus. Rodriguez has produced several outstanding efforts in not only the discus but other events as well. Look for an article on Rodriguez in a future edition of the Dispatch.

As the new coach of the Gavilan College softball team, Bobby Reggiani knows he faces an uphill climb to turn the Rams into a winner on the field. The Rams’ last winning season came in 2014, but since then the team has averaged just below nine victories per season. It’s a task Reggiani said he’s up for. “I want to get it to the point where the girls around the area say, ‘Yeah, I want to play softball at Gavilan,’” said Reggiani, who was hired as the new Gavilan coach three weeks ago. “A lot of times they (high school players who plan to play community college softball) don’t want to stay in town. So they’ll go to San Jose City or another junior college. It’s going to be a challenge, but I’m up to it and just want to see these girls succeed and have them eventually get to the point where they say, ‘Hey, I want to play at Gav.’” If numbers are any indication, the Rams are on their way to stamping themselves as a major factor in the community college landscape. Reggiani said he already has nine recruits committed to play for the program next season—he’s also working on a couple more—while also having

several returning sophomores in the fold. Increased numbers play a critical role in that it creates a dynamic, thriving and competitive atmosphere. “The last two years we’ve had the bare minimum number of girls (to field a program), and it’s hard to get them motivated sometimes if there is no one to push them,” he said. “The more girls in the program, the more energy you’ll see. I’ve already had a meeting with the returners and they’re already excited about seeing some new girls coming in and the team we can have.” Some of the top players projected to return next season include Noel Chavarria, Brooke Siaz and Liezl Clark. All three players prepped locally and are an embodiment of the Gavilan program in that the majority of the roster features homegrown, local players. Chavarria, a centerfielder from San Benito High, had a terrific freshman season, especially defensively. “She was one of the top defensive center fielders in the league this past year,” Reggiani said. “She saved a lot of runs for us covering a lot of range in that outfield.” Clark, who is from Gilroy and can play multiple positions in the infield including catcher, was a second team all-conference player in 2019 and hit .325 in Coast Conference South Division play while leading the team in home runs. Siaz, who is from Prunedale and prepped at North Salinas High, earned Coast Conference First Team honors this past season as a utility player. Siaz started most of the team’s games and did a solid job, all the more impressive considering shortstop and the infield are her

ON POINT Former Gilroy High standout Liezl Clark will be one of the top returners for an upstart Gavilan College softball team next season. natural positions. Reggiani hopes he’ll be able to move Siaz to the infield next season, which would make the Rams a more formidable team. Clark is pumped that Reggiani has taken over the reins of the program. “I’m really excited knowing a big change is going to happen when we come back next season,” she said. “I’ve known Bobby for a while because he coached my sister’s travel ball team since she was around 10 years old, so he’s been around our family a lot. I really like the type of coach he is because he can talk to you and be straightforward. If you’re doing something

wrong, he’ll be straight up with you, and that is how you get better. He’s not one of those coaches who will sit on their butt and will tell you something and yell from the stands. He’s really active as far as what a coach does to help the team be the best it can be.” Clark has a terrific comeback story. After graduating from Gilroy High in 2017, she spent a year at San Francisco State before transferring to Gavilan after realizing she wanted to change her major. Clark wasn’t even planning on playing softball until Reggiani got in contact with her and told her about the program.
