POLICE WARN OF DANGERS OF ILLEGAL FIREWORKS IN CITY LIMITS Staff Report

➝ Fireworks, 11

Scott Hinrichs

The Fourth of July celebration in Gilroy are sure to go off with a bang, as the citysponsored legal fireworks show returns at 9:30pm near Gilroy High School. The fireworks will be set off on the softball field, but no one will be allowed near the field. Community Engagement Officer Rachelle Bedell said the fireworks can be viewed from the school baseball field, nearby open grassy areas, or the levee near the high school. And once again, the city is emphasizing fireworks safety with the second year of a smartphone app for reporting illegal fireworks. The “Nail Em’” application

Car enthusiasts gathered at the first-ever Coyote Creek Concours d’Elegance on June 23 to check out more than 200 rare and collector’s vehicles from various eras. Held on the 18th hole of the Coyote Creek Golf Club, the Concours made its debut in Morgan Hill after a number of years in Alameda. Featured marques, or make of vehicle, at the event were Corvette and Ferrari. A slew of other classes joined these cars, including American sports cars, Japanese cars, cars of Morgan Hill/Gilroy and many others. Cars were judged by class, and judges scrutinized every detail from tires to roof and everything in between. The Coyote Creek Concours will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Operation Freedom Paws, a San Martin-based non-profit that pairs shelter dogs with veterans and other people experiencing physical or psychological disabilities.

Morgan Hill Police received a tip late last year that turned into a nationwide investigation into the production and sharing of child pornography. As of this week, the

investigation has implicated 18 people, according to authorities. Two suspects identified by police from the initial tip—both South County residents—are accused of producing child pornography by sexually assaulting children on camera, and sharing the images with other alleged criminals. In hopes of identifying

some of the victims found in illegal images and videos uncovered by recent search warrants related to the multi-state investigation, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office June 21 released the name and booking photo of one of the suspects who lives in San Jose. That suspect, Graham

Bessermin, 38, has worked closely with children throughout the region, from Santa Cruz to San Francisco, according to the DA's office. Morgan Hill Police arrested Bessermin at the local police station on Memorial Day, according to Deputy DA O'Bryan Kenney. Local officers identified Bessermin as the

recipient of child pornography material after spending the previous months investigating a tip received in November 2018. Investigators contacted Bessermin and asked him to visit the Morgan Hill police station to answer officers' questions, Kenney said. He did so on May 27, ➝ Investigation, 8

People filled a block of Monterey Street downtown and rocked out to the classic rock tunes of JJ Hawg during the first Downtown Live concert of the season June 20. Organized by the Gilroy Downtown Business Association, the series will run Thursday nights, 5-9pm through Aug. 15. In addition to the free concert, Downtown Live features food trucks, vendors and children’s activities. R&B artist Polo Jones will continue the series on July 11. Local school district leaders have agreed to allow parking at three of its sites for the annual Gilroy Garlic Festival, July 26-28 at Christmas Hill Park. A memoradum of understanding, approved by Gilroy Unified School District’s Board of Education June 13, permits festival parking at “certain areas of Gilroy High School, Ascencion Solorsano Middle School and the ‘Olive Grove’ property on Club Drive.” District staff stated it maintains “a longstanding mutually beneficial relationship” with the Garlic Festival, with many of its schools’ athletic teams raising thousands of dollars by putting in volunteer hours in various capacities during the three-day event.

Superintendent contracts extended

Gilroy schools superintendent Deborah Flores and Alvaro Meza, assistant superintendent of business services, had their contracts extended through June 2022 by the board of education at its June 13 meeting. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Paul Winslow had his contract amended through June 2021, according to a district report. “In order to recognize their contributions and quality service to the Gilroy Unified School District, it is recommended that the superintendent and assistant superintendents receive a one-year extension of the term of agreement in their current employment contracts with the district,” reads the June 13 agenda. In October 2018, the board approved raises for all three executives. In January 2019, Flores’ base salary was $230,468; Mesa’s base salary was $198,755; and Winslow’s base salary was $172,049.

In October 2018, the Board of Trustees of the GIlroy Unified School District approved raises for all three of its top executives.

Gilroy Unified School District has hired an environmental firm to remove soil with “higher than normal levels of arsenic in the dirt” at Brownell Middle School, 7800 Carmel St. According to the documents, a soil sample in the Preliminary Environmental Assessment turned up the arsenic concentration in the north field at Brownell. The soil will be removed from the site under a $36,450 contract with Padre Associates prior to the start of the $70 million, Measure E-funded Brownell Modernization Project. “The district, in concert with its consultants and general contractor, is in the process of procuring a qualified subcontractor to complete the soil removal,” according to staff. “The process will be under the supervision and direction of our consulting firm to ensure that the guidelines set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency are met.” Arsenic concentrations ranged from 3.4 to 110 mg/kg in soil samples collected during a 2016 environmental assessment at Brownell, according to a May 28 report by Padre Associates. These concentrations are nearly 10 times the EPA’s minimum safe levels in soil. For soils, where arsenic develops naturally, federal EPA guidelines for standards of concern begin at 0.39 parts per million (ppm), which is a 1:1 conversion

to mg/kg. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, effects from arsenic exposure range from nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain to lung, liver and bladder cancer depending on concentration and duration. Elevated levels of lead, organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were also detected in the soil, prompting “further action to reduce or eliminate the potential impact of these contaminants.” The recommendation was made for “excavation, transportation and on-site disposal of impacted soil at an approved landfill,” the June 4 document reads. “Subsequent soils testing is part of the removal process, and the soil removal activities will be documented and presented in report form to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control for review and site certification,” staff explained. An environmental assessment is done “to establish whether a release or potential release of hazardous substances, which potentially pose a threat to human health via ingestion, dermal contact and inhalation exposure pathways, exists at the project site,” according to documents. Public hearings on the disclosure were conducted at recent school board meetings. An additional $7,500 contract with Padres was also approved for the development of a Soils Management Plan, which will be submitted to the California Environmental Quality Act consultant for public disclosure. A major chunk of the estimated overall cost of the project comes in the

form of a $57,378,386 “lease-leaseback contract” with Flint Builders. That construction agreement includes all labor and services, materials, equipment, tools, supplies and incidentals necessary to complete the modernization, according to that contract. “The project is already underway and is scheduled to break ground after the site is approved by various oversight and regulatory bodies, including the EPA,” according to staff. They anticipate mid-July clearance at the earliest. The Brownell project has multiple phases and is scheduled to be completed by summer of 2021, according to staff. According to a PEA draft done at South Valley Middle School, which is slated to follow Brownell’s modernization with a $90 million project, OCPs, known as chlordane, were detected in the site soil and “represent a potential threat to the health of site users.” Further assessment of the extent of chlordane (a pesticide banned in 1988) in the soil is recommended by Geocon Consultants, which conducted the site assessment in April. “South Valley Middle School is being tested under a grant awarded by the EPA’s DTSC schools division,” staff explained. “The process is being managed directly by the DTSC and, although early in the process, has not yielded anything of concern in the soils.” Brownell, which was constructed in 1949, and South Valley, which was built in 1958 as Gilroy High School, are two of the oldest sites in the district. The $170 million Measure E was approved by voters in June 2016.

The suicide rate in Santa Clara County dropped for the third consecutive year in 2017, federal health officials reported. The decline in county suicides for the most recent reported year, to 6.95 suicides per 100,000 people in 2017, is in contrast to national suicide rates, which increased for the third straight year, according to the annual report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Santa Clara County, the suicide rate in 2016 was 6.98 per 100,000 people; in 2015, the rate was 7.77 deaths per 100,000 people. The rates of suicide deaths are nearly half the national rate, the CDC reported. Across the U.S., the suicide rate rose in 2017 to 14 suicides per 100,000 people, compared to 13 in 2016 and 13.3 in in 2015. The California rate, while also lower than the national rate, remains higher than in Santa Clara County, and has increased

since 2015. The 2017 California suicide rate was 10.5 suicides per 100,000 people; the same rate of 10.5 per 100,000 people in 2016 and 10.3 per 100,000 people in 2015, according to the county. In 2017, a CDC report found that from 2003 to 2015, Morgan Hill had the second-highest youth suicide rate among cities in Santa Clara County, just behind Palo Alto. During that period, the “crude suicide rate” among youth in Morgan Hill was 12.7 percent, according to the 2017 report.

OPINION LETTER

City sidewalks need repairs

GUEST VIEW DANI CARRILLO

CA bypasses migrants

T

he state budget passed by the California Legislature included funding to expand MediCal eligibility to undocumented residents under the age of 26. The expansion is projected to aid 90,000 young adults who are living at the brink of poverty, earning less than $16,395 per year in the state. Though a step in the right direction, passing this measure in place of other more expansive bills introduced this session means that many undocumented immigrants who desperately need MediCal insurance will miss out. And that will mean further suffering for some of our state’s most vulnerable people. Based on my interviews with over 50 undocumented immigrants in the Bay Area, I’ve heard troubling story after story of people who suffer on a daily basis because they lack health insurance. Their harrowing tales are eyeopening and disturbing. Take Manuel, for example, a 57-year-old day laborer who immigrated to Oakland from Mexico over 20 years ago. Manuel migrated to United States in his early 20s to help provide for his new family. For two decades, Manuel has stood on street corners in Oakland waiting for prospective employers to come by and ask for help with construction, landscaping or painting projects. He has shared apartments with several men, sleeping on floors and even closets, so he can afford rent and, in the early years, support his loved ones in Mexico. Not a young man anymore, Manuel lives with chronic pain that he cannot afford to have treated. About five years ago, Manuel had a work accident that left him with a broken arm that never fully healed. To this day, he cannot lift his arm past his shoulder, a heavy burden for him as a day laborer. The pain is there, too. But because Manuel has to financially sustain himself, he pushes through it every day and takes whatever jobs he can to pay his rent and meals. Eating, too, has become more

difficult lately because he has severe, unrelenting pain in his right molar. But when Manuel went to a low-cost health clinic he heard about to get treatment, he was told he had to become a member before he would be seen. Given his limited literacy in English and Spanish and the lack of any instructions, he couldn’t navigate the process. Finally, Manuel was told that even if he became a member, he would have to wait months to see a dentist. With no other option for affordable dental care, he bears extreme pain on a daily basis. Manuel wasn’t the only person I spoke to who had to deal with ongoing pain. There were others who suffered the physical aftershocks of work accidents, did not have a healthcare provider to go to when they became sick or injured, or who endured chronic pain to avoid the cost of seeing a doctor. Most also did not know where to go for mental health services. All of the people I spoke to were over age 26, which makes them ineligible for health benefits, even under the new MediCal expansion. They suffer from deteriorating health conditions that negatively impact them as workers, parents, family members and friends. Undocumented workers comprise 9 percent of California’s labor force and contribute $3 billion in state and local taxes each year. Despite all they contribute, 44 percent of undocumented adults have no usual source of care. Of those who are low-income, 90 percent of them do not have health insurance. They work some of the most physically arduous jobs, including landscaping, construction, restaurant work, and taking care of children and seniors. But if their health is compromised, they have few places to go. While the state’s budget helps young undocumented immigrants, it falls far short of Gov. Newsom’s “California for all” campaign. After all, the majority of the state’s undocumented population is not included.

It looks like the City of Gilroy isn’t as stable as we thought it was. They are now considering diverting funds to the police department from the recreation department. That’s a good idea, since all the cameras in the police parking lot are out of order. They don’t work at all—none of them. But if the city is so stable, why divert funds at all? To me, Mayor Roland Velasco and his State of the City remarks remain in question. Our sidewalks are the worst in the country, and we still don’t have a community center. We should have the money for both, if we really have the money. Gilroy Gardens is still in question. Are they really making a profit? The mayor says his No. 1 priority is the safety of Gilroy people, but he also says he knows our sidewalks are dangerous—but wants our residents to pay for it themselves. It’s the city that has ruined them in the first place. I thought the mayor’s original State of the City written remarks were in question. If we are doing so well, where’s the money? It all sounds too good to be true. Velasco and [former mayor Don] Gage a few years ago tried to raise our taxes by using the rich and wealthy people in Gilroy to back their agenda. Why not ask the same people to help build us a new good community center, or sell Gilroy Gardens to fix up the City of Gilroy including our infrastructure—the sidewalks, parks, roads, schools, etc.—instead of bringing in a bakery business with 600 jobs our people won’t have or building more new expensive apartment buildings instead of real affordable housing? The rich and wealthy are making a big killing in this state now—high rents, expensive food, gasoline and more. Let’s hold these political figures responsible.

Police seeking more information ➝ Investigation, 1

and that's when he was arrested on suspicion of child pornography-related crimes. Police noted that they seized suspected child pornography videos from Bessermin's phone. The DA's office subsequently charged Bessermin with possession of child pornography and communicating with a minor for sex, according to Kenney. He was arraigned May 31. Bessermin is still in custody at Santa Clara County Jail on $300,000 bail. His next hearing is scheduled for July 9 at the Morgan Hill Courthouse. Most recently, Bessermin worked as a nighttime supervisor at the Edgewood Center for Children and Families in San Francisco, according to authorities. Managers at Edgewood have been cooperating with police during the investigation. Bessermin has also served as a baseball umpire for high school students through the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League for several years, and worked with teens ages 13-17 at the Camp

Recovery Center: Drug and Alcohol Addiction Treatment in Scotts Valley between 2007 and 2017, according to authorities. The investigation into the full extent of Bessermin's crimes is ongoing, reads a press release from the DA’s office. “Local law enforcement will track down every cyber lead to find those who trade in child pornography, and our office will hold them criminally accountable," Kenney said. "These are not just images. They are real children, children who are exploited and abused.” MHPD Sgt. Bill Norman said Bessermin “has had a lot of contact with minors, and we want to make sure that potential victims can come forward and seek some kind of justice.” Anyone who thinks they have been a victim of Bessermin's can call Morgan Hill Police Det. Chris Woodrow at (669) 253-4895, or email him at chris.woodrow@morganhill.ca.gov.

Tip led to 'spider's web'

Bessermin is not the first suspect arrested in what Norman described as a

“spider's web” of an investigation, but authorities so far have been tight-lipped about the allegations against others arrested. In November, MHPD received a cyber tip about a local social media account that was uploading child pornography, according to police. The initial investigation led police to two local suspects—one a Morgan Hill resident and one from San Martin— who were likely in possession of child pornography. Detectives learned these two suspects had been assaulting children younger than 10 and producing child pornography, police said. The two suspects repeatedly filmed or photographed themselves assaulting the children, and shared these “homemade” images with other suspects, Norman said. These two suspects have been arrested and charged, according to the DA's press release. Kenney said investigators are not publicly naming these two male suspects because authorities are currently focused primarily on identifying any potential victims related to the Bessermin case.

Local police continued to investigate and learned that the two initial suspects had shared child pornography media with various other suspects, including Bessermin, Norman said. Bessermin, in turn, had shared the child pornography material with other recipients, who may also be guilty of crimes. A Times review of court records found that the two suspects initially investigated as a result of the tip to MHPD are Jose Gutierrez, of San Martin, and Connor Rinehart, of Morgan Hill. Police investigative reports allege they used social media messaging platforms to share explicit videos and images depicting themselves with child victims, which the two suspects had produced. Gutierrez and Rinehart were charged in January with felony counts of possession of child pornography and sexual acts with a child younger than 10, according to court records. Both are in jail custody with no bail. Norman explained that criminals involved in child pornography often share the illegal images and

videos with others, typically through the internet. This case is not an exception, and has thus far sparked the investigation of 18 people nationwide who have sent or received child pornography from the two initial suspects. Norman thinks that number will grow as law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions continue to investigate. “It was a very detailed and lengthy investigation,” Norman said. “It gets to a point where you start getting into a multi-state, nationwide kind of spider's web because all these (suspects) share their media, and once they do that it's a crime.” He further explained that possession, sharing, production and downloading of child pornography are each separate crimes, according to the state penal code. When asked how many victims are involved in the multi-suspect investigation so far, Norman said, "There's a lot." He said police are in the process of identifying victims in the related child pornography images, and authorities hope that releasing

Graham Bessermin Bessermin's name, photo and background details will help lead to those identifications. Norman praised Det. Woodrow for his determination and patience in following through with the investigation for six months and procuring information that identified multiple suspects accused of harming children. “Chris is a very tenacious detective who went above and beyond,” Norman said. “He went to the DA, and reached out to the specific crime units involved in these outside jurisdictions to hand them the investigation on a platter.”

(Bessermin) has had a lot of contact with minors and we want to make sure that potential victims can come forward and seek some kind of justice. —BILL NORMAN

COLBIE CAILLAT Grammy-winning singer/songwriter will appear with

her new band Gone West at Gilroy Garlic Festival’s first evening concert.

Garlic Fest a month away ENTERTAINMENT LINEUP SET Staff Report

Gilroy Garlic Festival organizers are gearing up for the 41st annual event, which is a month away. At the festival’s first-ever Saturday evening concert, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter Colbie Caillat will appear with her new band Gone West live on the Amphitheater Stage. The concert is included with festival admission, and the grounds will remain open an hour later to 8pm on July 27.

The Challenge Butter Cook-Off Stage will welcome James Beard Awardwinning chef, restaurateur and “Top Chef ” head judge Tom Colicchio on July 27, when he will host the Great Garlic Cook-Off. On July 26, “MasterChef ” Season 9 winner Gerron Hurt will host both the Champions for Charity and Garlic Chef Jr. (for young chefs ages 9-18) cooking competitions. “Real Housewives of New Jersey” star and cookbook author Teresa Giudice will prepare some of her family’s favorite Italian dishes on Saturday

afternoon. And on July 28, Alexander La Motte, executive chef at Rosewood CordeValle Resort in San Martin, will preside over the Garlic Showdown, in which professional chefs battle for a cash prize. The fourth annual Gilroy Garli-Que BBQ Challenge will combine an officially sanctioned Kansas City Barbeque Society contest for professional teams on July 27 with a Backyard BBQ Ribs Challenge for amateurs on July 28.

can be used from 7pm till midnight on July 4 to report illegal fireworks. Beginning July 1, city residents can purchase “safe and sane” fireworks from licensed locations along city streets and in shopping mall parking lots. These are big fundraisers for local non-profits. These fireworks are supposed to be used only within the city of Gilroy. However, there are areas in Gilroy where fireworks of any kind are completely prohibited. Bedell said those areas are Eagle Ridge, Country Estates and Carriage Hills. There is a longer list available on the city of Gilroy website.

The city allows illegal firework drop-offs at Gilroy fire stations with no penalty. The station addresses are Chestnut Fire Station, 7070 Chestnut St.; Las Animas Fire Station, 8383 Wren Ave.; and Sunrise Fire Station, 880 Sunrise Drive. Residents can also call 408-846-0350 to report illegal fireworks. Bedell said there are no road closures planned for the holiday. Police are encouraging citizens to download the “Nail ‘Em” app before the holiday. Citizens who use the app have the option to stay completely anonymous, police said. The app can be downloaded from the app store for iOS and Android devices. Location services

must be turned on for the Nail 'Em app to be effective. Police described how to use the app: If you see a nearby launch or explosion of a firework, you can report it using the "reporting mode" on the Nail 'Em app. The app uses your device's GPS to access your general location. Nail 'Em also allows the user to add information to help the officers pinpoint the precise location where the violation is occurring, such as an address or a general description of the area. Citizens can also report illegal fireworks by phone by calling 911 for emergencies only, and by calling (408) 846-0350 for non-emergencies. Police prefer that citizens use the Nail 'Em app to report fireworks violations from 7pm to midnight July 4.

ABOUT THE APPLICATION Every three years, PG&E is required to file a GRC application with the CPUC. The application is used to propose costs and money needed for operating and upgrading our gas, electric distribution, and electric generation. PG&E requests authority to increase its gas, electric distribution, and electric generation base revenue requirement by $1.058 billion in 2020. This is a 12.4% increase over its 2019 adopted revenues of $8.518 billion. PG&E also requests that the Commission grant it authority to increase its revenue requirement by $454 million, or 4.7%, in 2021 and $486 million, or 4.8%, in 2022. If approved, this application will increase PG&E’s rates for 2020 through 2022. The new rates will go into effect only after a final decision is issued by the CPUC. PG&E proposes safety investments and infrastructure upgrades to continue to increase wildfire prevention and electric reliability. Programs included in the requested increases include the following: • Replacing 2,000 miles of distribution overhead power line in high-fire risk areas with covered conductors; • Replacing wood poles with non-wood poles; • Implementing SmartMeterTM technology to more quickly identify and respond to fallen power lines; • Increasing ongoing work to keep power lines clear of branches from the more than 120 million trees with the potential to grow or fall into our overhead power lines; • Enhancing PG&E’s Wildfire Safety Operations Center; • Adding several hundred more fire cameras, weather stations and communications capabilities. HOW WILL PG&E’S APPLICATION AFFECT ME? Many customers receive bundled electric service from PG&E, meaning they receive electric generation, transmission and distribution services. Based on rates in effect when the application was filed, the electric bill for a typical residential bundled non-California Alternate Rates for Energy Program (nonCARE) customer using 500 kWh per month would increase from $113.64 to $122.37, or 7.7%. This amount is based on the year 2020, which is the year of the highest impact. Actual impacts will vary depending on energy usage. Detailed rate information was provided in a bill insert sent directly to customers. Direct Access and Community Choice Aggregation customers only receive electric transmission and distribution services from PG&E. On average, these customers will see an increase of 7.5%. Departing Load customers do not receive electric generation, transmission or distribution services from PG&E. However, they are required by law or CPUC decision to pay certain charges. On average, these customers will see an increase of 3%. Based on rates in effect when the application was filed, the gas bill for a typical residential nonCARE customer averaging 34 therms per month of gas usage would increase from $52.30 to $54.13, or 3.5%. This amount is based on the year 2020, which is the year of the highest impact. Actual impacts will vary depending on energy usage. Detailed rate information was provided in a bill insert sent directly to customers. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PG&E’S FILINGS To review a copy of PG&E’s application and related exhibits, visit pge.com/regulatoryfilings. In addition, a copy of this application may be reviewed at the CPUC’s Central Files Office, located in San Francisco, California, by appointment. For more information, please contact aljcentralfilesid@cpuc.ca.gov or call 1-415-703-2045. CPUC PROCESS This application has been assigned to an Administrative Law Judge who will determine how to receive evidence and other related documents necessary for the CPUC to establish a record upon which to base its decision. Evidentiary Hearings (EHs) will be held where parties will present their testimony and may be subject to cross-examination by other parties. These EHs are open to the public, but only those who are parties can participate. After considering all proposals and evidence presented during the formal hearing process, the assigned Judge will issue a proposed decision that may adopt PG&E’s application as proposed, modify it, or deny it. Any CPUC Commissioner may propose an alternate decision. The proposed decision, and any alternate decision, will be discussed and voted upon at a scheduled public CPUC Voting Meeting. As a party of record, the Public Advocates Office (CalPA) has reviewed this application on behalf of PG&E’s customers. CalPA is the independent consumer advocacy group within the CPUC with a legislative mandate to represent investor-owned utility customers to obtain the lowest possible rate for service consistent with reliable and safe service levels. CalPA has a multidisciplinary staff with expertise in economics, finance, accounting and engineering. For more information about CalPA, please call 1-415-703-1584, email PublicAdvocatesOffice@cpuc.ca.gov or visit CalPA’s website at www.publicadvocates.cpuc.ca.gov. Restaurant debuts downtown CAPOS NIGHT CLUB BRINGS FOOD AND LIVE ENTERTAINMENT Erik Chalhoub Business Editor

Erik Chalhoub

It’s time to get out those dancing shoes and hit downtown Gilroy: Capos Night Club and Restaurant is now open. City officials and community members joined the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the establishment’s grand opening on June 20 at 7588 Monterey St. The business is fronted by a restaurant and fullservice bar serving up a varied menu, from Mexican cuisine to rib eye steak, seafood, salads and more. The rear of the restaurant is home to the 21-and-over VIP Lounge, complete with a sizable dance floor, fog

machines, balconies and its own bar. “We’re bringing a little slice of Vegas to Gilroy,” said manager Popeye Rodriquez. Rodriquez said the goal of Capos is to not only bring people to Gilroy, but keep Gilroyans in the city, as many travel to find entertainment. “We wanted to fill a void here in Gilroy,” he said. “People crave live entertainment.” Owner Elmer Orellana, who also owns Sinaloa Cafe in downtown Morgan Hill, said many people from that establishment visit from Gilroy. “People have told us, ‘You should open in Gilroy,’” he said. The venue will feature performers from a variety of genres, Rodriquez said, from rock and country acts to cumbia and banda. It won’t be just music, he added, as Capos plans to

Capos employs about a dozen people. Since it opened a couple of months ago, Rodriquez said word of mouth has been growing and has

attracted families to the restaurant. In one Yelp review, Rebekah W. of Cupertino wrote that she brought her children to Capos and was impressed with the “amazing food and incredible service.” “I was a little nervous

about eating in a nightclub with small children, but it was probably the best dining experience I've had with my kids in six years of parenting,” she wrote. “Everything we ate was so delicious; we will definitely be back soon.”

Capos Night Club and Restaurant is open Thursday through Sunday. The nightclub is open Friday through Saturday from 9pm to 2am. For information, visit caposnightclub.com.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

ALL ABOUT FAMILY Derek Jensen is the new coach of the Gavilan College men’s basketball team. The 29-year-old Jensen was an assistant coach

last season to his brother Dallas, who took a job with College of the Sequoias. Derek is a Gilroy High graduate and played at Gavilan, SJC and BYU Hawaii.

DEREK JENSEN IS COACH OF A RESURGENT GAVILAN PROGRAM emanuel lee Sports Editor

Under former coach Dallas Jensen, the Gavilan College men’s basketball program has been one of the best in Northern California the last two years. Jensen took a job with College of the Sequoias approximately six weeks ago, leaving the Rams in a tough position to find a coach on short notice, right in the thick of the recruiting period. Turns out Gavilan didn’t have to look far to find its next coach; in fact, it only had to go down the bench to one of Jensen’s trusted assistants—his brother, Derek, who graduated from Gilroy High in 2008 and played a year each at Gavilan, San Jose City and BYU Hawaii. The Rams tabbed Derek as their next coach in the hopes that the program can sustain the excellence it has achieved the last couple of years. “Derek’s understanding of the game, his attention to detail, and the relationships he has built with returning studentathletes as well as our recruits were important factors in our

consideration,” Gavilan Dean of Kinesiology and Athletics Ron Hannon said in a press release. “We’re excited about having Derek continue what we’ve been building over the past two seasons within the men’s basketball program.” It’s been a whirlwind process for Jensen ever since his brother took the Sequoias job. Derek, who served as an assistant on the team last season, before that was the Christopher High boys coach for two seasons. “When I found out Dallas was leaving, I wasn’t sure what the future would hold for me,” he said. “So when Ron called me into his office (around three weeks ago), I honestly didn’t know what it would be for. We hadn’t talked about me being the head coach at all. When he called me in and offered me the position, I was stunned and shocked. I took the news back to my wife and told her, ‘Look, you ultimately are the one to make this call because you know how busy I’ll be as a head coach of a basketball team again.’ My wife was very supportive of it and knows it’s something I love to do. And she says I’m good at it, although she may be biased.” Recruiting is the lifeblood for any college program, and despite the off-season coaching change, Derek said the Rams are charging full speed ahead. “The good part about all this is I’ve been recruiting the entire time as well,” he said. “We continue to fill up our roster

everyday, and continue to add a guy or two on a daily or weekly basis. Recruiting is going really, really well, and I think from here on out we’re going to do just fine.” In the last two years, the Rams have gone a combined 51-8 in winning two Coast Conference South Division championships. Jensen said six players off last year’s team went on to transfer and earn fullride scholarships, and he expects the program to maintain that prodigious number going forward. Last season, Gavilan fell one win short of a spot in the California Community College State Final Eight. Jensen sees no reason why expectations and goals should change.

Straightforward goals

“Our goals are very straightforward—championships and scholarships,” Jensen said. “It’s plan and simple for me. I got to make sure I bring in the right players and build the right culture, because that is what it’s going to win those championships. It’s building talent and the culture. As far as scholarships go, it’ll require the kids to take care of business in the classroom. “And really our primary goal is to make sure these kids succeed academically and that we help them get the resources they need so they can move on to continue their academics at four-year schools. We follow their academics daily and make sure they get in front of the college coaches.”

Even though the Rams won’t return a single player who saw significant minutes last season, the cupboard is far from bare. They have several players who either saw action or took a gray shirt, including Taysean Nolan, Daemar Potts, Jason Gallo and Santiago Jimenez. Jensen also said he has several key newcomers coming in, including Kobe Ordonio, a combo guard who two seasons ago earned all-conference honorable mention honors while playing for Cabrillo College. Jensen was effusive in his praise for the former Monterey High standout. “We clearly have high expectations for him,” Jensen said. “He is so dynamic and can beat you in every way. He can attack the rim and has an unlimited type of moves in his bag that allows him to finish over guys. He’s an amazing shooter from anywhere on the floor, and his range is limitless. He’s extremely quick, has a great handle and sees the floor well. I expect him to be one of the better guards in the entire state of California. He really is that special.” Jensen also has Ordonio’s younger brother, Tahjae, entering the program as an incoming freshman. Derek and Dallas are not only brothers, but they’re best friends. The Jensen brothers talk everyday and see the game in similar ways as well. “Dallas has been a huge help to me as a mentor, in teaching me a lot about recruiting in the college game,” Derek said. “One of

the first things we did after I got the job was talk about when our teams would play each other.” That will actually happen in the 2019-2020 season opener when Gavilan hosts Sequoias in what surely will be a rare sight: two brothers coaching against each other in a college game. “We just couldn’t resist,” Derek said. “It’s going to be really fun beginning my coaching career at the college level against my brother, and hopefully, we crush them.” Jensen laughed as he said the last remark, knowing his brother has the same goal. A coaching change for a community college program is never easy, especially when recruits are deciding what school they’re headed to and in most cases have already made up their mind where they’re playing next. However, Derek has seemingly kept everything in place as he helped Gavilan raise its recruiting profile in the last couple of years.
