Full disclosure: I am not vegan, and I don’t think I will ever wake up and decide to move to an entirely plant-based diet. When it came to getting through the last year and a half of disasters, wine certainly didn’t hurt. But now, as we see a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, and we got through the summer without a replay of the CZU fire, it’s time to celebrate. Meanwhile, winemaker Ryan Beauregard created his Lost Weekend Old Vine Field Blend to celebrate survival—including the survival of the very vines this wine was made from, which were almost lost to the fire last year. When our writing crew divides up these categories every year, I always pick this one because I’m thankful that Santa Cruz still cares enough about record stores to have two great ones within a couple of blocks of each other. If you’re not in one of them flipping through the great new and used vinyl regularly, how are you even calling yourself a music fanatic right now? Do you even lift 180 grams, bro? You certainly wouldn’t have seen the 1986 pressing of Telephone Free Landslide Victory, the first album from legendary Santa Cruz band Camper Van Beethoven that’s hanging amid the collectible vinyl at Streetlight right now. This is literally a one-of-a-kind gift opportunity, in that you have to get over there and grab it before anyone else does—and then immediately give it to me.
