PUPIL STUDENT TUDE GUIDE
If you traveled the country looking for the most hospitable place to go to college, you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere better than Santa Cruz. If you go to UCSC, you are living in a Tolkien world of fresh forests, giant trees, wildlife greeting you between classes and a picture postcard-perfect view. Not to mention top-flight professors. Over at Cabrillo, first-year students have no tuition. The rest get a high-value education at bargain basement prices. One thing they don’t mention is that Cabrillo’s teachers are of the highest caliber because they have chosen to live and work in one of the most beautiful and cultural places on Earth and the school gets the cream of the crop of community college job applicants.
Our student guide is designed to give newcomers some help getting acclimated to their new town. Looking for the best-priced food? We’ve got you covered.
Wondering how to pick your teachers? We take a good look at Rate My Professor and get important feedback from the profs being reviewed.
Do you want to go to class or attend your classes on a laptop in bed? We analyze that too and have suggestions from teachers and students.
So, welcome to college in the Cruz and appreciate every day that you aren’t in, say, Buffalo, where winter can stretch from October to May.
Enjoy the start of your new life, put down the surfboard and don’t forget to study.

Students, teachers weigh in on learning online BY ALESANDRO MANZELLA
The traditional classroom setting involves a room full of desks, students and an instructor. This image has remained the same in today’s society, with a few alternative options to the classroom experience.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, distance learning has emerged as an option for college students. It allows them to take classes online without stepping on campus, pairing education with the comfort of their homes.
When taking classes online at some colleges, the options are synchronized and asynchronized.
Asynchronized studying is studying at your own pace with no required class times.
Synchronized learning is similar to a class schedule via Zoom.
Pedro Hernandez, a business economics graduate from UCSC, had a miserable experience online: “I found it a waste of time; I didn’t feel like I learned anything.
“Pausing recorded lectures every 10 minutes. Not being able to ask questions with a person in front of you. Spending money on classes like that through college felt like a waste of time,” he says.
When asked about online classes for junior college, Hernandez mentions that he could see it being efficient if tuition were lower.
“Overall, whether it’s asynchronous or synchronous, I found it hard to stay focused. Maybe it works for some people, but I found it difficult,” Hernandez said.
Logan Lockwood, a 21-year-old student, has tried both sides of digital learning at Cabrillo College.
“There are benefits and detriments to both,” says Lockwood, a third-year construction management major.
Asynchronous classes, he suggests, are “a great way for students who work or have a heavy load to get a few extra credits in.”
Lockwood mentions other benefits of asynchronous work, which include
Some students have decided only to take online classes this year.
Twenty-one-year-old Davien Borst says he found his asynchronous classes to be more time-efficient.
“I figured it would work better with my schedule if I were to take classes online," says Borst, now a third-year Cabrillo student.
“This way, I can have a balanced work, school and social life.”
Borst mentions that this wasn’t the first time he has attended class online.
“I’ve taken a mixture of online and in-person classes,” he says. “A mixed load is much better because you have more free time to finish those tedious assignments.”
Commenting on perceptions about the antisocial nature of online classes, Borst allows that “taking all online is missing that campus experience. Having a mix is nice, but I’ve experienced so much of Cabrillo already that I am fine with just online this year.”
Lastly, Borst suggested that new students have a mix of both classes. "Experience college. There are tons of people you can meet to help further your education experience.”
“flexibility and independence, because you can do your work on your own time rather than structuring your whole week around it.
“I have been working part-time since I’ve been at Cabrillo, so I could study after work and not have to worry about my schedules conflicting,” Lockwood adds, explaining he finds it’s “best to set a scheduled time or times throughout a week where I would do work for my asynchronized classes.”
Compared to asynchronous learning, he isn’t a fan of synchronous classes, where “technological difficulties, miscommunication and less required student participation made them feel like they moved slowly.”
“However, the ability to simulate a classroom setting via Zoom provides a great opportunity for students who learn well in a classroom,” he says. “The ability to work at my own pace was great, but for others, it might be challenging. It varies from person to person.”
As of the end of Covid-19, the University of California, Santa Cruz nearly returned to its original program, offering as little as 6% of classes online, according to Assistant Vice Chancellor Scott Hernandez-Jason.
Cabrillo College has adjusted class schedules along with availability to online programs. Digital learning classes are 35% of all classes offered this fall, according to Kristin Fabos, the school’s public information officer.
Francisco Íñiguez, a Spanish professor at Cabrillo College, has seen his class hours shortened due to online class schedules.
“That happened this semester; we used to meet for two hours and five minutes per class,” Íñiguez says. “This semester, we are only doing an hour and twenty minutes. The rest of our teaching hours should be online.”
Íñiguez explains the adjustments due to the availability of online classes, stating he teaches the same number of online courses as in-person classes. “I think they are allowing students to take as many classes as possible within the time frame they are here; this way, class schedules will transition better.”
SCRUTINY
This sentiment is shared by Michael Pebworth, a history professor at Cabrillo since 2001, who also values student feedback.
Students preparing to choose college courses for the first time are usually faced with an overwhelming number of options. It can be quite intimidating for a new student who doesn’t yet have experience with any specific teacher, so this is where websites like ratemyprofessors.com come in handy. Curious students can gain insight into what teachers are like and how they handle their classes. The website was originally known as TeacherRatings.com in 1999, but it was later converted in 2001 to the name it has today. The website currently has more than 8,000
GRADINGTEACHERS
“I’ll be honest—what would I want my reviews on Rate my Professors to say? That this class is time-consuming, but it’s a lot of fun and you’ll learn a ton of stuff,” Pebworth says.
Currently, Pebworth has been reviewed 157 times and holds a 5/5 rating, along with a 65% rating of students who would take the class again, which is average.
Below average is Rick Nolthenius, an astronomy professor at Cabrillo College.
Nolthenius has been reviewed 107 times, with 41 reviews regarding him as “awful.” He currently holds a 2.3/5 and a 36% would-take-theclass-again rating, making him one of the lowest-rated professors for Cabrillo on the website.
When asked about his rating, he said that he was already aware of it because he was initially told by one of his students about what people had to say.
“They said, ‘You just got a bunch of flamers and people who don’t like you for whatever reason, and they’ll just get on there and try to wreck and destroy you,’” he says.
College students aren’t the only ones being graded.
Is Rate My Professors fair?
BY RUBY LEE SCHEMBARI
schools in its listings, along with 1.7 million teachers and 19 million ratings worldwide.
Cabrillo College offers quaint classes with eccentric teachers trying to engage students in a creative manner, so it makes for interesting reading to check in on the highest and lowest-rated teachers at the Aptos campus. Starting off with one of the highest-rated professors on the website, political science professor Nick Rowell has 116 ratings and a 100% rating of students who would take the class again. Rowell has been teaching at Cabrillo for 10 years,
and his favorite classes to teach are Intro to U.S. Government and Political Science 3, which focuses on international relations.
“My classes are like my children, and it’s hard to pick one,” he says.
“I truly love teaching those classes because often it’s students who are thinking and learning about politics for the first time, and that makes it a special environment where we can explore new things together.”
Perhaps this is where Rowell’s high rating comes from: a passion for teaching that started back when he was in college. While he is aware of his glowing reviews, all he hopes to read is what students learned and if they felt comfortable and supported in his class.
Most professors care very little about what their students think of them, and they don’t let negative reviews stop them. However, Pebworth says he doesn’t want to be regarded as an “incompetent ogre who should be fired.”
Nolthenius, on the other hand, could care less.
“So why subject myself? I can’t change whatever it is they write. All I can do is do my best to teach and hope they like it, and if they don’t like my class, they can always take someone else’s,” he asserts.
There is one sentiment shared by all three professors, which boils down to this: Don’t let reviews make up your mind. Find out for yourself and make your own opinion.
“Rate my Professor is very skewed. You can get a sense of people’s extreme experiences, but it doesn’t give you the tools or the data you would need to know what the typical student experience is,” Rowell says.

Founded in 1998, Motion Pacific—known today as the 418 Project—“became a melting pot for different dance styles… and the foundation for much of the breakdancing and hip-hop movement in the ’90s,” according to then co-founder and local dancer Molly Heaster in an article by Georgia Johnson.

Hip hop instructor Ceech says the feeling inspires the move BY LUCILLE TEPPERMAN
When Shih-Chieh Hsu discovered a VHS tape of the Jedii Clan performing live in dance battles, it was the inspiration that ignited his passion for hip-hop dance and its inclusive culture, he recalls.
“It became my bible. When I saw this raw footage, it was so real—not like those Hollywood movies. … I said to myself, ‘This is the culture I want to be in,’” explains Hsu, who is now 51 and known as Ceech. When Ceech arrived in the United States from Taiwan at the age of 2, no one spoke Mandarin. “It was sink or swim,” Ceech recalls.
Growing up in the South Bay in the 1990s, Ceech says, “Michael Jackson’s dance style was a revelation. But no one could teach these dance moves.
I could only mimic them. You can’t learn to dance off of videos. If you look at ’80s or ’90s dance videos, it’s impossible. You can’t see the moves they are doing.”
Though growing up in an immigrant family meant academics came first, “dancing was always in the back of my mind,” Ceech recalls. After obtaining a degree in electrical engineering, he felt he could pursue his passion for dance.
In the summer of 1999, Ceech attended a dance convention in Los Angeles, and that’s where he met the Electric Boogaloos.
As a hip hop dance group, they were pioneers of the street dance style of popping, known for their choreography work with Michael and Janet Jackson, among other big
stars. “To me they were just larger than life,” Ceech recalls. “When you hear that they were dancing with Michael Jackson—it’s like Michael Jordan saying ‘come hang out’ if you’re a basketball fan.”
The person who really drew Ceech in was Mr. Wiggles: “He’s a famous dancer; he was in Usher and Missy Elliott videos, and was part of the Rock Steady Crew out of New York, the pioneers of breaking.”
When Ceech first met the Boogaloo crew, he says, “they were so down-to-earth. … They opened up the doors to me and kind of accepted me as a little brother, inviting me to go and train with them in Las Vegas where they were living at the time.”
Before this connection, it was local dancer and Motion Pacific
Touring with the likes of Stevie B, and other well-known acts, Kendell would be hired out by Korean dancers, Ceech explains, “so a lot of the K-pop moves come from his style and teaching. When you see Gary dance, you want to dance with him, be around him. I idolized this guy, and so did a lot of people in the Santa Cruz community.” Performing with Kendell and his Boom Squad ushered Ceech into his own teaching career. Ceech has been teaching in community colleges since 2002, and at Cabrillo College since 2016. He also teaches at Mission, West Valley and Gavlin colleges in Santa Clara County as well as at The Get Down dance studio in San Jose.
What’s a hip hop class with Ceech like? It’s a supportive environment with a mix of varying skill levels, with advanced students often teaching the new choreography. Throughout the semester students learn hip hop fundamentals and build on them to create their own choreography, which they will perform for the final exam.
“I think a good instructor should teach the foundations, like Running Man, Roger Rabbit or the Cabbage Patch—party dances created in the era,” Ceech says. “Without them, you are just making up stuff. What is happening today, a lot of people have the advantage of social media… and they can mimic really well, but they don’t know the history of the dance culture.”
Learning the moves is not enough, he says. “The essence of this dance is inspired from the music. That feeling inspires the move. I try to teach the way I was taught. What these pioneers taught me was the essence.”
In addition to his website, dancewithceech.com, Ceech Hsu is also active on Instagram (dancewithceech) and Facebook.

Another fan favorite and healthier alternative is the taco salad for

Their “iconic breakfast burrito” offered before 11am for $7.99 is a perfect morning meal for Cabrillo or UCSC students looking to fuel up before
Operating since 1977, the Bagelry has established itself as one of Santa Cruz’s most revered breakfast destinations. Open 7.30am–2pm every day, the Bagelry offers breakfast sandwiches, including the popular “scrambagel” with egg and green onions ($5) and the vegan guacamole bagel sandwich ($5.60). For a place to study and awesome food for a very reasonable price, the Bagelry is a very good local option. Two locations in Santa Cruz and one in Soquel; bagelrysantacruz.com.
PRETTY GOOD ADVICE
When the word vegetarian comes in contact with burgers, most people tend to immediately disregard it as lower-tier. That could not be further from the truth at Pretty Good Advice. “I’m not even a vegetarian and I would put their burgers and breakfast sandwiches up against any fast food in the area,” Adam S. said on Yelp. “It may be plant-based, but it’s real fast food, and I mean that in the best way possible.” Fan favorites include the Good Morning breakfast sandwich for $7 and the Pretty Good Cheeseburger for $8.50—which is vegetarian and soy/dairy free. Another good choice is the $5.50 soft serve. Open 9am–6pm daily. 1319 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz; 3070 Porter St., Soquel; 831-226-2805. prettygoodadvicerestaurant.com

For those who aren’t afraid to spend the extra dollar for a delicious and healthy seafood meal, M.G. Sushi is one of the most affordable sushi places in town while boasting excellent customer reviews. The most bang for your buck comes at $17.75 for the 16-piece Special Maki Combination, which includes California roll, tuna roll, cucumber maki and salmon maki. “ Free delivery for orders over $25!!” said Sandy L. on Yelp. “It’s perfect to split between two people and have the convenience all in one.” 1733 Seabright Ave., Santa Cruz; 831-777-2903. santacruzmgsushi.com

Here, locals tend to stare hard and long at newcomers. Because of its bluff-protected location, Four Mile isn’t affected (as much) by the afternoon summer winds as most spots on the North Coast. Reaches its full potential during west, northwest 10-foot-and-above swells.
THE HOOK
Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break also has a lot of surfers that are “hooked” on the spot. Nevertheless, it’s got a right-facing
wave that, if you can maneuver around the flock, is to die for.
MANRESA/LA SELVA
Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars. But a lot of the time the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over the place. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside and nil to no summertime surf— unless there’s a south swell.
NATURAL BRIDGES
When the conditions are just right, like an 8-foot west swell, this spot has the best tube rides available. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.
PLEASURE POINT
This place is generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra thin-glassed rippers. Practice, as always, common courtesy and you should be all right in the outer, best breaks.
PRIVATE
Longboard paradise. Clean right-facing lines peel off and make for a great ride that will take you all the way into the break known as Trees and into the Capitola Wharf. Well, not quite, but the ride is long and the waves are gentle. Easygoing, without all the soft-board hassles of Cowells to spoil your wave.
SCOTT CREEK
A potent combination of a beach and reef break, Scott dishes out about every challenge a surfer can handle. From long paddles and strong currents and rips to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott isn’t for the faint of heart—or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water. Breaks best with a powerful north swell.
STEAMER LANE
Perhaps the most classic break in the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot and Indicators—the Lane has it all, including ogling tourists. There’s even a surfing museum in the nearby lighthouse.
THREE MILE
Primo reef break that is usually uncrowded, especially during weekdays. Named after the number of miles after Swift Street, it cops a great right line, particularly during a winter northwest swell.
