The city council’s three open seats now presents a wider opportunity for at least two new council members come December, as Mayor Ozzy Jimenez has opted not to seek election to the seat to which he was appointed two years ago. Jimenez had been reluc tant to discuss his plans with the press or public, though it was rumored that members of the coun cil knew he was not run ning. He did not men tion the topic during his mayor’s comments at the Aug. 1 City Council meet ing, though it was widely expected he would do so. He announced instead that he and his longtime partner were engaged to be wed. The news drew a warm reception from the council and public; when Jimenez was appointed he was only the second openly gay council member and first person of color to serve on the council since 1992. But people were won dering when he’d make clear his intentions, in the election at least. Finally the announcement came on his Facebook page on Sun day, Aug. 7. “I’m choos ing not to seek re election and I’m looking forward to completing my full term ➝ Pizza, 6 ➝ Fires of Change, 2 YOU SLICE IT: Whole pies, and fractions thereof.

By Christian Kallen It would be unfair to several Healdsburg restau rants to say “At last, there’s pizza!” just because Mom bo’s finally opened up in the Vineyard Plaza, where several previous pizze rias rose and fell over the years. After all, we have Pizzando, La Pizza, Vera, Campo Fino and Round Table, to say nothing of the in-store pizza oven at Big John’s—fine purveyors all. But there’s something different about Mombo’s. It’s a venerable Sonoma County brand, with longstanding locations on Mendocino Ave near Santa Rosa Junior Col lege and in Sebastopol. Its history is colorful, too, stretching at least back to the Santa Cruz beachside community of Capitola, the surfside town where it all began, with the Janis Joplin-influenced name Pizza My Heart. That’s the Mombo’s legend, as personified by founder Fred Poulos. His peripatetic life seems as if lived in a wider pursuit of perfection of the culinary

Bro ken Rainbow in 1984. When Smith came on as Embers of Awakening’s co-producer, she gave the project the momentum it needed, and the 114-min ute film was completed in April of this year. Aside from news foot age, found mostly in the first part of the movie, the film is built around a series of interviews with fire survivors, fire ecology specialists, social activ ists and farmworkers. They all contribute to the wide net cast in telling the story of fire’s impact, and what can be done in recovery.“As a homeowner you can do everything right, and you still may lose your home,” says Jeff Kane, a Humboldt State associate profes sor of fire ecology. Such after-the-fact obvious steps as clearing under story through prescribed burns, or landscape thin ning with goat herds, as well as the defensiblespace solution, all fall by the wayside when you consider that houses are just fuel in a firestorm, one of the witnesses says. That crucial zone is called the “wildlandurban interface” or WUI, where human develop ment meets undevel oped grasslands or for ests. Its frail stability is clearly demonstrated by news footage of the 1964 Hanly Fire, which burned across the May acamas into Santa Rosa in almost the exact same footprint as the 2017 TubbsOneFire.difference: the Tubbs Fire moved across the same landscape eight times faster than the Hanly, said Lisa Micheli of the Pepperwood Pre serve. The Preserve was 95 percent burned in 2017.Inexplicably, a cou ple of decades later res idential development thrived in the burn path of the 1964 fire, so in one sad sense the sacrifice of Fountaingrove 57 years later seems preordained. SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPFORTHETEAMHEALDSBURGTURNSUPHEATINSLO2NDSTATE By Christian Kallen The Healdsburg Prune Packers tore through the CCL cham pionship weekend, out scoring opponents 35-8 over three games, cli maxed by a 14-1 drub bing of #1 ranked Conjeo Oaks on Saturday night. This makes it two championships in a row for the Healdsburg team, which plays in the Northern Division of the California Collegiate League. It concludes a season that saw the team go 37-10 overall with sev eral season-leading stats on the team: highest bat ting average (.400) and most RBIs (51) by Joey Kramer, most home runs (15) by Jared Sund strom; and best pitch ing record (6-1) by Sam Stoutenborough.Allthatwas good enough to get them only the #2 seed in the postseason round robin tour nament, as the larger Southern Division has long been presumed the stronger. This year’s tour nament was held in San Luis Obispo at Sinsheimer Park, where the Packers started their 2022 playoff run on Aug. 4. Their opponents were the hosting SLO Blues – the same team the Packers defeated 8-7 in last year’s champion ship game. This year’s rematch wasn’t so close. With Caden Noah (of U. Texas Austin) on the mound to start, the #3 seeded Blues were held without a run for four innings while the Pack ers scored four times off Bryson Van Sickle (U. Utah) on seven hits and three walks. In the top of the eight, the Blues began to blow their horns and scored two runs, drawing within one of the Packers, 4-3, going into the bottom of theThatinning.was a cue to the Packers to unload, and they scored four big runs, a cushion that was more than they needed. The deflated Blues went down in order and the game ended at 8-3. When the dust set tled Braydon Runion (U. New Mexico) had gone three-for-three with a double and four RBIs, Sam Brown (Univ. of Portland) got two hits, one of them a double, and Zac Vooletich (Texas Tech) got a double of his own. Noah got the win, and the Packers were feeling pretty good about themselves with one tough game down, two to Thego.next day Healds burg faced the Conejo Oaks (Ventura County), who had advanced to the winner’s round by drowning the Orange County Riptide, 8-2.

Winning pitcher was Sam Stoutenborough (Texas Christian), whose eight strikeouts turned out to be the best perfor mance by a pitcher in the playoffs. The team mobbed together at the pitch er’s mound when closing hurler Christian Becerra (UC Berkeley) struck out Noah Karliner of the Oaks on a 3-2 pitch, thus sealing the Packers dom inant run for a second CCL Championship in two years—and setting the table for a three-peat in 2023.Inthe official CCL reporting on the playoffs, Gomes is quoted as say ing that this team never let up. “They never came off the gas pedal,” Gomes said. “We talk about emp tying the tank … and they did that. They responded to challenges all summer.” Said Gomes, who ends his ninth year as man ager of the Prune Pack ers, “It means a lot to the Healdsburg commu nity,” adding, “I think it's I think it's good for the league to have some par ity.” The six-team South ern District has tradi tionally been the stronger over the five-team North ern, but the Packers’ suc cessive triumphs changes that assumption. Keep an eye out for news about next season at prunepackers.org.https://www.
Sam Stoutenborough, out of Texas Christian, ended the 2022 season for the Prune Packers with a 6-1 record, and tacked on the winning game in the state CCL playoffs.
The Friday, Aug. 5 game found the Packers tak ing command out of the gate as, scoring on a walk to Vooletich driven home by a double to left by Joey Kramer (Cal State Northridge).Kramerwas again key to a run scored in the third, slapping a single to right to advance Jack Hol croft (Univ. Portland) to third, who then scored on a Runion infield shot that the shortstop couldn’t handle. Three more were added in the sixth, two on a lofty home run by Holcroft, and the Packers with five runs had all they needed to win. But as it turned out, their biggest inning was yet to come, the eighth. They loaded the bases off pitcher Wesley De La Torre, the third Oaks pitcher of the game but the guy they stuck with. He walked in one run, and another scored on a sacrifice fly, but the bases were loaded again when Kimble Schuessler (UT Austin) put one over the fence for a grand slam and an unassailable 12-1 lead.Leave it to the Oaks, though, assail they did, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth but coming up more than a bit short, 13-4. Win ning pitcher was Marv cus Guarin (UOP). Under the doubleelimination rules, the loser had to return to an extra playoff round, while the winner, the Prune Packers, just needed to win one more game to claim the title. The next afternoon the frustrated Oaks ripped the Rip tide 10-2, so they came up against the Packers one more time, hoping to build on that momentum with an Unfortunatelyupset. for them the Prune Pack ers were in no mood to mess around. The game was only half over before Healdsburg had a 10-0 lead, and when the Oaks scored a single unearned run in the top of the sixth the Packers took it out on them with four more of their own in the bottom of the inning, producing the final 14-1 RBIspairandVoolevitch,result.RunionKramereachhadaofdoubles,for10betweenthem. through the area today, we see history repeating itself.A number of other locally familiar and valu able voices are brought forward in Embers of Awakening, including Geof Syphers of Sonoma Clean Power, Katie Jack son of Jackson Family Vineyards, Climate Cen ter co-founder Ann Han cock, historian emeritus Gaye LeBaron and Super visor Susan Gorin, who lost her own Oakmont home in the Tubbs fire. By Christian Kallen Healdsburg is a town with history on every streetcorner, and some times halfway down the block too. The new exhibit at the Healds burg Museum, “Stories Behind the Structures," makes that point through the historic architecture still found throughout the city – representing the full deck of American vernac ular housing styles, from American Foursquare to Tudor Revival. If you’re not sure what those are, there’s a check list test just inside the front door at 221 Mathe son St. Curator Frances Schierenbeck, a profes sional architectural histo rian, provides a gallery of 15 Healdsburg buildings and their corresponding styles, which can only be revealed by opening an old-fashioned library card catalogSchierenbeck, file. who presently works with CALTRANS, is a longtime Healdsburg Museum vol unteer with a passion for historic buildings. She joined the Museum Board in 2022, and chairs the Healdsburg Museum’s Historic Preservation awards“Manycommittee.artifacts we are showing are recent acqui sitions that have never been displayed before,” said Healdsburg Museum Executive Director Holly Hoods. The exhibit high lights well-preserved local historic architecture, using paired photographs or drawings of an historic building when it was new, and photos of its current condition..Forinstance, the Mar shall House at 227 North St. was built in 1870 for the blacksmith John Mar shall and his wife Sarah; its style is Vernacular Ital ianate blended with Greek Revival, according to the information panel, and it changed hands several times over the decades. Its most recent renova tion was a high-profile job by Mark Goff and Philip Engel, who spent eight years restoring the for merly run-down resi dence, then sold it for close to $5 million. The home is on the northwest corner of Fitch Street, but just a few yards west on North, a colorful rambling Ital ianate structure build in 1892 is found. It served as Healdsburg’s first hos pital from 1908 to 1933 under Dr. J. Walter Sea well. Now the Camilla Inn B&B is found here, festooned with camellias and other floral touches, offering weekend rooms forManyvisitors.other down town buildings are included in the exhibit, some familiar and some unrecognizable. But once the eyes are open to Healdsburg his toric architecture, the evidence is everywhere – on Matheson, Center, Tucker streets and even the Plaza itself, a slowly changing focal point of the town since Harmon Heald set it aside as a commons in 1857. One good way to open those eyes is to take a Historic Homes Walk ing Tour this summer, the first on Saturday, Aug. 27, starting at 10 a.m. This one introduces locals to 12 historic commercial buildings located within 3 blocks of the Plaza by means of the Clio app from the Clio Founda tion, a history guide app available for download on Google Play and the AppleTheStore.present exhibit is supported by a generous grant from the Healds burg Tourism Improve ment District (HTID). It will be on display through Oct. 30, 2022. The Museum is open Wednes day through Sunday, from 11:00-4:00 pm. Admis sion is free.

The plot thickens Since Jimenez is an incumbent, his decision not to file means that the nomination period for a city council seat will remain open an additional five calendar days, until Aug. 17, at 5 p.m. With Evelyn Mitchell the only incumbent run ning, one four-year seat is wide open—and even Mitchell will be only one of a handful of candidates on the ballot, the top two of which win council seats. Several candidates have begun the filing pro cess, said City Clerk Raina Allen, though the final number of candidates –and whether or not they will be running for the two open 4-year seats or the single 2-year seat on the ballot – won’t be known until late next week. City Parks & Recreation Commissioner Chris Her rod has been visibly in the run for a four-year seat, and former councilmem ber Brigette Ann Munsell has stated she is running for the two-year term. Per sonal assistant Linda Cade has confirmed that she intends to run as well. Matt Villano, a local journalist, initially intended to file for the two-year seat as well but said the cost of application and campaigning was too high, and Villanowithdrew.complained on Facebook that the appli cation fee alone was over $850, and including costs for mailing lists, posters and fliers would add sev eral thousand dollars to mount a credible cam paign for office. City Clerk Allen said, “The estimated Statement of Qualifications cost is determined by the County of Sonoma. WHERE TO SIP FROSÉ AND WINE SLUSHIES THIS SUMMER
Chateau Diana Healdsburg Chateau Diana is one of the most popular places in Healdsburg to stop for a chilly afternoon adult beverage, thanks in part to their delicious wine slushies, which come in three flavors. All of the options start with a base of their master white wine blend, to which they add natural colors and flavors to create their Sour Cherry, Blue Rasp berry and Marshmallow wine slushies. Custom ers flock to the Chateau on warm days to indulge in the brightly colored, sweet and refreshing fro zen treats. Smith and Story Wines Healdsburg Smith and Story pur chased a frozen drink ma chine in 2020 and offered wine slushies, made with just wine, water and di luted monk fruit sweet ener, at their Healdsburg tasting room all summer. They were a huge hit. But now that the worst of the pandemic is behind us, the winery only uses the machine on summer holidays or special occa sions—like the upcoming Labor Day holiday. Anaba Wines Sonoma
By Brooke Herron While an iced cock tail or a cool, crisp glass of white wine on a sunny day is delightful, nothing pairs quite as nicely with hot weather as a slushy adult beverage. I challenge those peo ple who—like me, until recently—feel wine and sugar, or wine and sugar and spirits, shouldn’t be mixed, to stop at just one sip of one of these deli cious wine slushies or frosés on a sweltering day. It’s an effort in futil ity, so we may as well just keep sipping and let the sweet, icy nectar cool us down. There’s a reason the frosé craze exploded over the past few years. Beverage historians trace the drink’s popular ity to Bar Primi in Man hattan, which sparked a frenzy five years ago on the East Coast with the trendy cocktail. Internet search term history sug gests other frosés were introduced earlier but failed to gain traction. So what exactly is in frosé? And where can we find this delightful slushy beverage being served? Frosé is a frozen, blended drink with a rosé wine base. Think of it as a mashup between rosé and a fruity cocktail, with less of a hard-alco hol kick. A wine slushie is the same thing but made with any type of wine, not just rosé. Most establish ments put their own spin on the beverage to create a signature recipe, with ingredients that include frozen fruit or fruit juices, spirits, citrus and sugar or sweeteners.Findfrosé or wine slushie nirvana at the fol lowing North Bay bars, restaurants and wineries.

SUMMER DAYS Waterdrops on an Iris remind us of last week’s gentle rain.
By Pierre Ratte Ahhhhh. The sweet smell of petrichor last week was a welcome joy. Petrichor? Yes, petrichor: the pleasant, earthy odor that follows gentle rain after a dry spell. Cool word, isn’t it? Pictured above are a few drops highlighting the Cro cosmia crocosmilflora, or Coppertips Montbre tia. These flowers, in the Iris family, are native to France and symbolize adaptability and enthu siasm—watch words for theFunweek.facts: English is often thought to have more words than other languages, allowing its users nuances of mean ing like in the word “pet richor.” However, count ing words in different languages is tricky busi ness. There are report edly 6,909 distinct lan guages, and they each operate differently. For instance, German allows compound words. A high Alpen brook trout is a word.fixeswherebyFinnishit’sthreemgesetz,Rechtschreibereforerningnewishkapitän.schifffahrtsgesell-schaftscaptain:forelle.’‘HochgebirgsbachADanubeshipDonaudampfHowever,theGermanlawgovspelling,themaynotallowconsecutive“f”s—difficulttoknow.isagglutinative,prefixesandsufareallowedonanyWithcombinative possibilities, German and Finnish easily surpass English in word count. Rules allow people to, lit erally, make up words. Korean has more than 1 million words. In Korean, a dialect’s different words count separately. So, dia lects act as word-count multipliers. Korean word count compares to 1,022,000 or 171,476 English words—depend ing on who’s counting. The latter is Oxford Dic tionary’s words in use, 600,000 if historical words are included; the former count is from Google digitization in 2010. French, with an estimated 100,000 words, is often called the world’s most beauti ful language. Some think this stems from French being a diplomatic lan guage, evolving gentle terminology for dicey sit uations. A middle-aged woman is “une femme d’un certain age”; “entre dans la lune” is to pay zero attention. French is decidedly idiomatic; in fact, idioms are “expres sions Françaises.” Italian is also called the world’s most beautiful language, perhaps for its mellif luous sound and poet Dante Alighieri’s role in fathering Italy’s mother tongue. Long awaited Peletz committed to the Healdsburg loca tion a year and a half ago, but the remodeling from its former tenants— which included Straw Hat, Mountain Mike’s and others—took much longer than expected, and the fits and starts of Covid regulations didn’t help. Even now he’s still looking for experienced restaurant workers to fill out the Healdsburg team (email ferredingmodeltoburgforwardFieri,ingcouldn’tingdaystoo.oflongonthe1051begmail.com).mombosmail@“We’rereallyhappytoopen,”hesaidattheVineSt.restaurantdayaftertheyopenedAug.4.“It’sbeenawaitforthepeopleHealdsburg,butforusWecouldtellintheleadinguptoopenthedoors,peoplejustwait.”PerhapschanneltheeffervescentGuyPeletzislookingtotheHealdslocationas“aplacehavefun,”andtheofthelargerdinareahasbeentransnorthfromthe newly remodeled and enlarged Santa Rosa location. There’s even a polished bar, with trendy local breweries soon to be on tap, a wine list, and big screens showing the game.Peletz says he thinks it’ll be a good fit for Healdsburg. “People need family-friendly places— there’s a lot of wonderful restaurants for Friday or Saturday night, but this satisfies the family look ing for a pizza.” And at Mombo’s everyone can have their own slice, if that’s how the family rolls on a Saturday night. “If you want to see what an original Mom bo’s looks like, go to Sebastopol,” he advises— but hurry. “I think the next project will be to update the Sebastopol store with a range and a fryer so we can add pas tas to make the menus the same across the whole company,” he said. You can find those menus at mombospizza.com.
Resurrection New owner Andrew Peletz started as gen eral manager of both the Sebastopol and Santa Rosa shops in 2014, after almost a decade at Johnny Garlic’s during Guy Fieri’s involvement. Peletz, who grew up in Santa Rosa and is now 41, formally purchased the restaurants from the ailing Poulos in March 2020.“Fred taught me everything about pizza and took me to New York to show me the legend ary slice spots of NYC,” said Peletz. Toward the end, he recalls Fred Pou los coming in every few days to re-energize the dough and the sauce with what he called “bombs,” concentrated ingredients that gave the pies the special flavor of the classic New Yorkstyle thin-crust pizza. “It was obviously a real big deal for him when he gave me those recipes,” said Peletz. “You could tell he guarded thoseThesecrets.”opening this month of Mombo’s Healdsburg marks a res urrection of the found er’s Mombo’s into what might be called Peletz’s version, where dining is a bit more comfort able for those who want more than take-out: sal ads, pasta dishes, maybe sandwiches. The Santa Rosa store took that turn after Peletz’s pur chase, and the Healds burg pizzaria is built in its Thepattern.Covid shutdown gave Peletz and his col leagues additional time to complete a full-scale renovation in Santa Rosa, as the Mendocino Mombo’s was closed for almost a year and a half, reopening in June 2021. This com ing school year the stu dents are expected back in pre-pandemic num bers, and many will find a new Mombo’s.

But it was at Pizza My Heart in 1977 that they all came together in the sim plest of solutions: pizza by the slice, still the winning formula. That success was rewarded when Pou los sold the brand in 1989, landing in Sonoma County in the new mil lennium. Poulos started Mombo’s in Santa Rosa in 2002, conveniently near SRJC. A second fol lowed in Sebastopol three years later, and its popu larity and sure-fire quality launched it onto many annual Best of the North Bay lists in the Bohemian. Mombo’s made an impact on the cultural atmosphere thought the region. The Santa Rosa location (1880 Men docino Ave.) was crazy popular with JC students, and the Sebastopol loca tion was in Sebastopol (560 Gravenstein Hwy N.). A series of radio ads, featuring Poulos, who died in June at age 67, and KRSH ad manager Dave Gross, added to the legend of Mombo’s. “I miss Fred,” said Gross recently. “I always send friends to Arnold's on Cape Cod for the best fried clams. We always talked about clams! There wasn't a particular theme for the old Mom bo's ads that I produced at the KRUSH but one thing that they were, were snarky.”
