The final score was no indication of the energy and enthusiasm the fans, and the players, brought to the game. Cheers were heard for every yard gained and hard-hitting tackleThemade.Greyhounds have had a few years in the red, so to speak, with a 3-6 record in the 2021 sea son, 0-4 in the North Bay Redwood league, but the school does have a vaunted history in the game and hopes to revive that soon, if not this year then next. League opponents are Piner and Maria Carrillo of Santa Rosa, St. Vincent de Paul of Petaluma and Ukiah High. The league schedule begins Oct. 14 for the Greyhounds when they meet Ukiah at home, followed by away games

When asked what time of year was best for baking pies, she looked shocked. “August, of course!” That’s high fruit season, after all, which only a non-baker would not know. Other highlights: a living bee colony; Healds burg High School teacher Derek Corsino’s Culinary Program students con ducted three food demos; a new interactive music education program for K-5 students called “Music is First,” operated by musi cian and arts educator Ami Molinelli and her business partner, Alyson Swihart; a similar “Little Picasso Art Zone” that used recycled materials to create masks, creatures and more, from art teachers Harvest Nieto and Karen Klimak; and half a hundred other art ists who brought their best work to Healdsburg. As Jen Utsch of Jendala, who creates pos itive affirmation chimes out of recycled metal, said, “It was an epic weekend connecting with commu nity and sharing my art… The volunteer support from Healdsburg High School students sets the Healdsburg Arts Festival apart from any other.” Gina Riner took on the job of organizing the fes tival earlier this year, and with other Healdsburg Center for the Arts (HCA) board members Dave Howard, Colin Deas and Nicole Schlaeppi—and a last-minute surge of com munity support—pulled it off. Over 50 artist vendor booths took shape, beer and wine complemented the key food trucks, and a steady rotating line-up of performers, from Moheet Solhova belly dancers Friday afternoon to the impressionistic dancing of Skylaer Palacios and Julius Small on Sunday, gave the weekend a multi-media buzz.“We fell short of our fundraising goal, but what’s most important was how healing it was for the community and how it highlighted the continued need for art and culture in Healdsburg,” said Riner.

The Arts Conquer Healdsburg

By Christian Kallen Healdsburg’s Rec Park rocked once again to the sounds of football as the home team Greyhounds faced off against the vis iting Timberwolves from Fort Bragg on Friday night, Aug. 26.

By Christian Kallen With projections for several 100-plus degree days in Healdsburg this weekend, the dire con dition of the North Bay water shortage contin ues to concern agencies as well as residents. The Rus sian River watershed is deep into a third consecu tive year of below-average rainfall, and water supply levels at Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma remain at historic lows. The heat wave— and there’s no other way to describe conditions expected to see thermome ters crest the century mark for at least four straight days, Saturday through Tuesday, and possibly lon ger—is due to high pres sure building over the Great Basin in Nevada and Utah that will “shift westward over Califor nia tomorrow and Thurs day and result in temper atures rising up to well above normal,” according to meteorologist David Spector of the National Weather Service. And it’s not just the North Bay. The Los Ange les region is expected to swelter as temperatures approach 110 degrees, and historic highs can be expected throughout the state. So it’s not surprising that the county’s water agency, Sonoma Water, and its partners in the Sonoma Marin Saving Water Part nership (SMSWP) con tinue to advocate water conservation, saying, “Water saved now is water we can use later.” Once again, Healds burg continues to lead the way, showing strong water conservation num bers in their latest reports for August. The city is cur rently in Stage 2, with the goal of reducing usage by 20%. Some restrictions include the limited irriga tion hours only three days a week (Tuesday, Thurs day and Saturday), no

3 DAY HEALDSBURG ARTS BESTSHOWSFESTIVALOFFTHESIDEOFTOWN

By Christian Kallen In what can only be described as a big win for the hometown team, the three-day Healdsburg Arts Festival attracted over 1,000 people to the Plaza, where acoustic music drifted over the booths, local food was prepared and served on site, kids played and grown-ups danced in the warm Cali fornia sun. It was as if the Healds burg Plaza were made for just such an event. And it was particularly welcome, coming on a weekend of good weather, three years after the last such Healdsburg Arts Fes tival graced the town cen ter, in 2019. “One of the festival’s goals was to rein vigorate the Healdsburg art and culture scene by providing an inclusive and diverse space for connec tion, community-build ing and creativity after a challenging few years of fires, flooding and the COVID pandemic,” said Gina Riner, the festival’s director. After all that, just getting together in a com mon space proved healing, cathartic. While Saturday was the busiest day, with arts ven dors happily surprised by the works they sold and friends they met, every day had its special moments. Take, for instance, Sun day: The smell of freshbaked dessert wafted over the crowd as an old-fash ioned “pie parade” wended through the Plaza, led by 94-year-old Lorraine Ham and her mixed berry pie. In their wake, a drift of random comments: ”What’s that smell?...How cool…. You don’t see that every day… A what?... Thank you Mrs. Ham! We loveFollowingyou!” the pie parade, Ham led a crustmaking workshop on the closed-to-traffic Plaza Street, the location of a Culinary Arts Pavilion created for the three-day event. “Don’t ever use your hands,” she scolded, as she wielded a pastry cutter through the butter-floursalt-sugar and bakingsoda dough. Among her exclusive tips: Use a whisk instead of a sifter to break down the flour in the bag; and put a cast iron pan into the oven to preheat, then place the completed pie on top of it to bake, guaranteeing the under crust will cook as well. She said she started baking pies when she was 21 (let’s see… that would be some time ago), when she went with a friend to an Eastern Star pic nic. “Her crust was ter rible,” she said, knowing that she could do better. As time went on, the infor mal pie culture devel oped in Healdsburg, and eventually a tight group of women started a pie parade in the Plaza.

against Maria Carrillo (Oct. 21) and St. Vin cent (Oct. 28), and the season finale on Nov. 4 against perennial power houseCoachPiner.Robert “Bear” Gray returns to lead this year’s 29 players, supported by assistant coaches Adriean Baca, Brad Duffy and Jere miah Michener. Starting quarterback is Jeremiah Michener Jr., now a senior, who returns from last year’s team. He suf fered a minor ankle injury on Aug. 26 and left for the first half, though he returned as a run ning back in the sec ond. Junior Wyatt Dugan subbed in behind center. Other returning players on this year’s varsity squad include five other seniors: defensive end Reef Cawvey, tight end Otis Hardin, and line men Alexis Garcia, Logan Cardona and Edwardo Silva. That means the roster leans young, which promises stronger teams in the coming years. Upcoming are two away games against Novato (Sept. 3) and nearby rival Cloverdale (Sept. 9), but then local fans can look forward to a four-game homestand, starting Sept. 16 against Lower Lake, followed by Kennedy (Sept. 23), Irvington (Sept. 29) and the league opener against Ukiah. Kickoff at Rec Park is 7pm for varsity games, 4:30pm for JV.

While the football team tries to find its rhythm, the girls’ volleyball squad got their groove on ear ly this season and jumped out to a winning season. “We have been playing really well,” said Coach Richard Mitts, adding that they “have a great group of senior girls that have gone through some very down times with the program and COVID.” In fact, he credits the three seniors—Theresa Hel frick, Lizette Gomez and Emery Joy—for keeping the team together and on track. As a first-year varsity coach—he came to the school from Aftershock Volleyball Club in Wind sor—Mitts has already seen a big advance over last year’s team, which struggled to a 4-17 record. The girls’ volleyball sea son was the first varsity sport to get started, and they have already built a winning record of 6-3, with most of their losses coming in during tourna ment play in St. Helena. They have won their last two games without losing a match, going 3-0 against Sonoma Academy on Aug. 23 and against St. Helena on Aug. 25. In fact, Sonoma Academy was one of the losses dur ing the St. Helena tourna ment, but the Greyhound girls avenged it three days later with a 3-0 sweep over the same squad. But a big early sea son test came on Tues day evening, when they faced off against a larger and strong Santa Rosa High team in the East Gym on the Healdsburg High School campus, the smaller gym adjacent to Smith Robinson. Despite the Greyhounds’ dogged attack, the Panthers pre vailed, 3-1. Healdsburg High has about a quar ter of the total enroll ment of Santa Rosa, and will usually compete in Division 4 for smaller schools, though several of their wins so far have been against higher-rated teams.“They had a tough year last (4-17), but I’m excited for what we have ahead of us. I think we can make some real noise really quickly,” said Mitts. Follow the noise at the East Gym this fall; JV games start at 5pm, varsity about 6pm.

Idlewild Wines Idlewild founder Sam Bilbo’s love for the wines and region of Piedmont in northern Italy led him to create a brand focused on “Piedmontese inspired wines from the rugged hills of Northern Califor nia,” and more specifical ly from hillside vineyards in Mendocino County. Idlewild works exclusive ly with varietals that hail originally from north ern Italy’s Piedmont re gion, and that are rarely seen planted in Califor nia (though often rare ly planted or uncommon in their regions of origin).

From pies on parade to affirmation chime creation, the Healdsburg Arts Festival had it all this year. The photos above are evidence of the fact that a good time was had by all at the event, held for the first time since 2019. Starting with the top photo and going down, Lorraine Ham can be seen leading the way for the pie parade, with festival director Gina Riner off her left shoulder and artist Phil O’Donel behind her. Then David Correa and Tommy Hill are seen playing a Latin guitar duet on the Gazebo stage. And finally, Jen Utsch of Jendala is seen creating a positive affirmation chime out of recycled metal. Utsch was among the exhibitors singing the Healdsburg Arts Festival’s praises and looking forward to another year.

CIAO Local grape growers go Italia.

Idlewild’s menu of Ital ian white wines includes varietally specific wines and blends such as Arneis, Favorita, Cortese and Erbaluce. Their red wines include Dolcetto, Freisa, Grignolino and Nebbiolo. Having tasted many West Coast and Califor nia winemakers’ attempts at Dolcetto and Nebbiolo (and having been disap pointed in almost every case) and having tasted all of these grapes in Piedmont with Piemon tese winemakers, I think Idlewild is doing a phe nomenal job with these grapes. 132 Plaza St., idlewildwines.comHealdsburg.

OBSCURE GRAPES

Where to sip unique, obscure and rarely planted Italian grape varieties in Sonoma County?Arneis, Biancollella, Cortese, Fiano, Freisa, Favorita, Grignolino… If you haven’t heard of some (or any) of these grapes, you aren’t alone. These are just a few of the unique, obscure or rarely planted Italian varietals currently in Sonoma County vine yards and tasting rooms. If you love seeking out and finding new wines that help you expand your palate and turn you on to grape varietals with which you aren’t familiar, these three wineries will be right up your alley.

Orsi VineyardsFamily Crafting wines that are an “expression of Italy, plant ed in Sonoma County soil,” Orsi started experiment ing with uniquely suitable Italian varietals in the Dry Creek Valley in 2008. The winery produced their first vintage in 2010, but most wines were sold to whole sale customers or friends and family until this past June, when they opened their Dry Creek Valley winery and tasting room. Orsi grows red Italian varietals such as Primi tivo, Negro Amaro, Neb biolo, Schioppettino and Aglianico and white vari etals that include Fiano and Biancolella, which thrive in warm or hot cli mates. The winery has so far focused on 100% single varietal wines (no blends). The highlights for me at Orsi were the Biancolella, Fiano and Montepulciano. 2306 Magnolia Dr., orsifamilyvineyards.comHealdsburg.

Unti Winery Unti grows and produces rarely seen white and red Italian varietals that in clude Falanghina, Fiano, Biancollella, Vermentino, Aglianico and Montep ulciano. They also grow Barbera and Sangiovese. What I love about Unti’s menu of wines is that Mick Unti carefully considers what varietals make sense to plant, with an eye on climate change, water shortages and long term viability. This is what led Unti to experiment with grapes like Fiano (which Mick planted in 2011) and Aglianico that thrive in hot temperatures and are more resistant to drought.Onmy most recent trip to the winery, the highlights for me were the Fiano and the Bar bera (which I think is the best Sonoma County Bar bera…), but I really like all of Unti’s wines. 4202 Dry Creek Rd., untivineyards.comHealdsburg.

Freddie was born and raised in The Hague, Netherlands. He lost his father at seven and this had a profound impact on his life. His brave and beautiful mother, Henny, was devoted to Freddie and his little brother, Rob. Freddie liked to tell stories of the three spending vacations camping at Lake Garda, Italy and once traveling on an extended trip to Canada to visit relatives where he and Rob became little cowboys.Always a rebellious adventurer, Freddie left Holland for the United States, sailing aboard the yacht, Courageous, which belonged to Ted Turner. He was just 20 years old. Sailing became an integral part of his life. He not only was a champion racing sailor, but also commanded the foredeck of several racing yachts. Freddie was a sailmaker as well and all of his abilities made him a desirable crewmember when he sailed around the world. He visited the pyramids at Giza, went ashore to commission rudder repair in Yemen and his boat was shot up in the Indian Ocean. Later on, the crew became extras in a movie filming in Singapore, where they were surrounded by beautiful women as usual. Freddie was a man of many talents; his lean 6’6” stature demanded respect. Once in Sonoma County he began a business called Stone Age Foods, which created healthy salads and such and did remarkably well. When that business went out of fashion, he took over the daily running of Sonoma Sausage Co. After the sausage company, Freddie became the brand manager for the Dutch chocolate liqueur, Vermeer. Tired of the commute to San Francisco, he managed the Ace Cider Pub and then a Petaluma bar. Freddie found his niche working as a lead driver at Pure Luxury Transportation and was there for years meeting myriad interesting people; both world famous entertainers and captains of industry. Freddie found common ground with everyone and could chat about anything to anyone.

T he Russian River Valley and Joe Rochioli Jr. are inseparably connected. Raised on his family’s farm on Westside Road in Healdsburg, Rochioli never left, save for college and the Army. He was the patriarch of the region as well as an integral citizen of the city of Healdsburg. He became a proud hard working farmer who helped earn the Russian River Valley a reputation as a world class site for Pinot Noir. Rochioli passed away peacefully on August 18 at the age of 88 with Vivienne his wife of 41 years and his children by his side. According to his son Tom, who now manages the estate along with his wife Theresa, Joe Jr. suffered a stroke in September 2020 and had been in and out of the hospital since. “He fought hard”, said Tom. “He was a tough guy.” When the Rochioli family started making wine under their namesake label in 1985, they carved out their own style and proved quickly to be one of the top Pinot Noir producers in California. They were believed to be one of the first in the valley to divide their vineyard into parcels for site specific bottlings. Today the Rochioli bottlings are consistently in high demand among collectors around the world. As a young boy Joe attended the rural Mill Creek school and spent many hours in the fields and vineyards on the family farm. He eventually grew to become a small-town sports star. When he entered high school, he was already 6’ tall and 160 lbs. His linebacker build came from daily farm labor. His father, Joe Sr. was primarily in the hops business but also farmed beans as well as 50 acres of grapevines. Rochioli worked on the farm every day before and after school. Shortly before leaving for college at California Polytechnic State University, Rochioli organized the first Future Farmer Fair in Healdsburg, which is still held annually. He majored in animal science but took all the agricultural electives he could. In 1957 Joe was drafted into the army where he helped conduct research on radiated foods and vitamin deficiencies. After leaving the service in 1959 Joe returned home to work on the family ranch, and played semi-pro baseball for the Healdsburg Prune Packers. It was during this time that he worked alongside his father to begin transforming and planting the farm into a world class Rochiolivineyard.wasahumble proud farmer, committed to his land, usually waking at 4am, working 10+ hours a day, six days a week. Among his many talents was being the first and most proficient field budders around the County. Before the 1970’s, grafting was done in nurseries, but Rochioli led the trend of ‘field grafts’ to meet demand. Stories tell of his grafting 500 vines per day at multiple properties in Sonoma County. Joe loved country music, and his vintage car collection. He and his wife Vivienne made a regular appearance in the annual FFA Fair Parade, and together supported many local community and charity events. He was a member of the Sonoma County Winegrowers, Russian River Winegrowers, Eagles, American Legion, North Bay Italian Cultural Foundation, Trenton Druids, and The Healdsburg Historical Society. He was also an active supporter of the Healdsburg Future Farmers Country Fair and Healdsburg High School Greyhound Boosters. Joe was preceded in death by his father Joe Rochioli Sr., his mother Neoma and brother Michael Rochioli. Joe Jr. is survived by his wife Vivienne and their five children. Son Tom Rochioli (Theresa), daughter Becky Richardson (Jeff), step children Lori Brendlinger (Bert), Sue Maddigan (Bob) and Tracy Tillinghast (Hilary). Grandchildren Rachael Rochioli, Ryan Rochioli, Taylor Richardson, Nicki Richardson, Kyle Nyholm, Kasey Nyholm, Emily Nyholm, Haley Maddigan, Audrey Maddigan Martin (Alex), Claire Torrez (Zach, Abby Tillinghast, and his sister Violet Wattles and numerous close familyThemembers.entireFamily would also like to thank and recognize Dr. Harry Carr of Sutter Medical Center and Joe’s amazing team of caregivers Danise, Sam & Julius of Caring Homecare in Santa Rosa. Together they provided endless hours of support and comfort. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in the memory of Joe Rochioli to the HFFCF PO BOX 763, Healdsburg 95448 or Healdsburg High School Boosters 238 Theresa Court, Healdsburg 95448.

Despite all of those endeavors, Freddie had one vocation he enjoyed above all others. He became a motivational speaker for a company called Sage. As such he was able to help reveal solutions to his clients by gently directing them to look within themselves for answers; they spoke and he listened. Motivating people and navigating their troubled waters along with them was Freddie’s pleasure.Freddie was about to become a licensed pilot when 9/11 derailed that ambition. He loved to fly his drone, race fifth scale remote control cars and was a devoted Formula One fan. Few know that Freddie was also an excellent drummer. Freddie died suddenly and unexpectedly leaving his loving and devoted wife, Mercedes and their kittens, Frida & Diego; his son, daughterin-law and baby granddaughter, Bo, Mallory and Avery; and his brother, Rob, who resides in Holland.Freddie’s sly smile, infectious laughter and wry wit are sorely missed. We will celebrate his life, both here in California and in Holland, on his birthday, September 5, 2022 (if you would like to join us, please contact Mercedes at mmmercy@sonic.net). 25, 2022

Honoring Labor

By Pierre Ratte Labor Day’s long weekend winds up sum mer. Vacations end. School starts. Days are progressively shorter. Autumn comes to mind and fall colors slowly show.Labor Day honors the American worker. The U.S. was the first country to establish “labor day,” and the first parade took place in New York City in 1887. Oregon first rec ognized it as an official holiday. Thirty states fol lowed, and Labor Day became a federal holi day in 1894, a mere seven years from conception. Very speedy compared to the 106 years it took to recognize Memorial Day as a national holiday in 1971.Fun facts: Speaking of speedy, did you know workers like those pic tured above constructed the Empire State Build ing in 410 days? Think of that, one year and 45 days! It started March 13, 1930, and completion was May 1, 1931, ahead of schedule and under bud get. Four and half floors of structural steel were erected each week. The building was built on the site of the for mer Waldorf Astoria hotel. Rising 102 stories and 1,250 feet high, it is topped with a 203 foot (20 story) mooring mast. The pinnacle was con ceived to increase height and serve as a landing dock for trans-Atlantic dirigibles. Tethered to the tower, the idea was passengers would dis embark via an open-air, blimp-bridge. Imagine that; it never happened.

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction.
