The race for three city council seats in Healds burg continues following a candidates’ forum, spon sored by the Chamber of Commerce and Healds burg 2040, at Coyote Sonoma on Sept. 14.
Last week (Sept. 15) we presented answers to a set of questions from the Tri bune by all four candidates for the full-term, four-year council seat. With this issue, the Healdsburg Tri bune gives the three can didates for the partial twoyear term the chance to respond to the same ques tions. The candidates are presented alphabetically, and their comments have only been edited for tech nical reasons (spelling, etc.).“Election Day” is Nov. 8; mail-in ballots will be accepted beginning Oct. 10 at the Registrar of Vot ers Office (435 Fiscal Dr., Santa Rosa) and the next day at official Ballot Drop Box locations.

What are the most important reasons you’re running for a city council seat?
City council is a volunteer position, so the stipend for the role is low. Be cause of this, the people who are able to serve on the council are folks who are fortunate to have flex ible work schedules and significant savings. As a result of this barrier, peo ple on city council don’t necessarily represent the residents that live in Healdsburg.
What experience or specific qualifications will you bring to the city council?

Trail to Fitch Mountain Summit Gets Boost
SEN. MCGUIRE’S PET PROJECT IS A GAIN HEALDSBURGFOR
By Christian Kallen
The view of Fitch Mountain looming to the east of Healdsburg is as much a signature of the town as the Russian River itself, a natural landmark that defines the region. It’s a small wonder—its 991-foot altitude is no Everest or Denali, but as the Dude would say, it holds the town together.
Soon people can do more than just look up at it, but park at the improved trailhead, take a hike to the summit on a well-marked trail across two new footbridges, and look down on Healds burg, the Russian River Valley, the Santa Rosa Plain and beyond.
That hike is possi ble now, though as locals know the view from
the summit is partially obstructed by high veg etation growth. But an improved route would be welcome.Anexpanded trail sys tem, restroom facilities and picnic grounds are among the features that will begin improvements this fall, thanks in large part to a $1.5 million allo cation from the state to the State Coastal Conser vancy, a longtime finan cial partner in the Fitch Mountain Park and Pre servePerhapsproject.not surpris ingly, it’s former Healds burg High grad, Healds burg City Council member and now State Sen. Mike McGuire who has secured the final $1.5 million needed to com plete the trail system on iconic Fitch Mountain.
“We couldn’t be more excited to secure the funding that repre sents the final piece to the Fitch Mountain Park
and Preserve puzzle,” said McGuire. “By next sum mer, hikers and dog walk ers alike will have eas ier access to this gorgeous property, along with rest rooms and an enhanced trail system to enjoy.”
Saving a Landmark Healdsburg can thank Zelma Ratchford that the mountain slopes and sum mit are still forested. Start ing in 1954, she began accumulating property on the mountain, describing her effort as her “Magnif icent Obsession” to pre serve the Eventually, landmark.she accu mulated 264 acres, most of which became the 173 acres that comprise the Fitch Mountain Park and Open Space Preserve, purchased by Sonoma County in 2014, which “encompasses the entire 991-foot peak of Fitch Mountain and most of its surrounding slopes.”
In his final year on the
Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, in 2014, McGuire had a hand in the transfer of the prop erty from private owner ship to public. Now he has used his current leverage as Senate majority leader to make sure the funds are available for this home town
“Thislandmark.project has been a passion of McGuire’s as he progressed through his political career, working with county’s Ag + Open Space to secure fund ing and negotiate pur chase,” said Mark Themig, the city’s community ser vices director. “And as he has moved into his state career, he has kept this on top of his priority list.”
The ambitious under taking also owes a large debt to the City of Healds burg, which allocated $1.2 million to match the state’s funding from Prop 68 Per Capita Grant pro gram, Measure M funds and park impact fees.

“It's difficult to point to one reason we are clos ing,” reads a portion of the message. “The truth is there are many truths. It would be easy to point to the doubling of our rent this year, a national labor shortage, rampant growth in our town, inflation and the lack of housing for our staff. While these are influ encing factors, the truth is they inspired a deeper reflection that points toward a need for change.”

How do you think the council can better represent its constituents?
Transparency, and ele vating the voices of con stituents that don't have as much opportunity to participate.
What do you think that visitors should know about Healdsburg? Please be respectful of our small town. This is a great place to be... but you should probably bring a water bottle from home. Stay hydrated.

What experience or specific qualifications will you bring to the city council?
I bring the experience of a grandmother who picked cotton and the son of two Ph.D. educators.
Growing up in the Bay Area, I have seen the ev er-increasing difficulties in affordable housing. In running a catering com pany for 25 years, I un derstand the difficulty in finding and retaining em ployees due to the high cost of living. My expe rience advocating poli cy from the city, county to state level required building coalitions to get
things done. These expe riences will help me work with fellow council mem bers to get results for the residents of Healdsburg.
How do you think the council can better represent its constituents?
I believe there is always room for improving the openness and transpar ency of government. I believe the current coun cil does its best to out reach to a wide range of residents, but we need to do better to get our working families and se niors involved in the proj ects and issues facing our community.
What do you think that visitors should know about Healdsburg?
Visitors miss the backbone of our at tractiveness, our tra ditional events like the Street Dance or Beer and Sausage event. Front and center, tourists see the re sults of the hard workers in the fields who produce our produce and vine yard workers, whom without these hard work ers we would not be a world-class destination. Yet these hard-work ing residents are hidden away. The farming histo ry of Healdsburg and its
working residents should be highlighted.

The traffic sign on Dry Creek Road reminds me farming takes place here every day. And, isn’t it glorious to live in an area that is grounded? Liter ally grounded, making a living from the earth.
If you’ve been on a local road behind a trac tor with a train of rattling steel bins, seen nighttime klieg lights illuminating
vineyards or passed flat beds hauling grapes, it’s hard not to know harvest is in full swing. Harvest starts with champagne grapes and ends with cab ernet. A typical progres sion might be: sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc, pinot grigio, chardonnay, pinot noir, merlot, zin fandel, cabernet franc, syrah, and lastly, caber netThissauvignon.year, some vint ners picked champagne grapes, then cabs. Fun facts: Wine pro duction in this area began in 1812 with Russian plantings on the coast. Italian immigrants came in the late 1800s, plant ing vines and passing down vineyards through generations. Their names and legacies, like Seghe sio, Foppiano and many others, thrive over 100 years later.
In 1920, 256 wineries and 22,000 acres were in production in the county. During the 1940s, Ger man POWs helped har vest. U-Boat crews were reportedly rough guys, while prisoners from Rommel’s desert army were said to be friendlier.
Today, the Dry Creek AVA, 16 miles long and two miles wide, has over 60 wineries and 150 grape growers. An AVA (American Viticultural Area) is a government designated wine growing
region. Dry Creek AVA is known for zinfandels, one of the oldest varietals in the world, dating from 6,000 BC in Croatia. to Cabernet productionWine in this area began in 1812 with Russian plantings on the coast.

VOLLEYBALL GIRLS LOOK READY FOR REDWOOD RIVALS, DOWN PINER
By Christian Kallen
The varsity volleyball team from Healdsburg High currently has com piled a winning record, exclusive of tournament play, of 9-6, as the nonleague part of the season winds down. And despite some setbacks, the Grey hound girls look ready to take on the North Bay Redwood League, start ing this Tuesdayweek.found them at home against Piner High. While the final 3-0 match score was no sur prise, given that the Pros pectors have yet to win a match, every set was close, and the ragged Greyhounds had to close ranks to win.
What Coach Richard Mitts said would be the “first big match” of league play comes on Thursday, Sept. 22, against Rancho
Cotate in their Rohnert Park home gym. While the Cougars have a mixed pre-season record of 5-8, they have been a peren nial force in North Bay Redwood, taking their 8-0 record last year to theButtitle.every year, every team is different, and Mitts thinks he can play a winning hand this season. Last week, the Grey hound girls bested Casa Grande here in Healds burg on Sept. 15, 3-1. “That was a very excit ing match—super high energy, and it was a good one to get going into the league schedule,” said Mitts.Ascheduled rematch with Montgomery on Sept. 12, however, didn’t go as well, as the Grey hound girls were shut out, 3-0. “I didn’t coach to my fullest that evening,” con fessed Mitts. “I take some blame
Onethere.”daylater, a match against Cardinal Newman also didn’t go as planned, this time because the 4.4 earthquake of Sept. 13 shook the gym. The Montgomery coach can celed immediately, just a point into the second set. And due to the pressures of the coming league season, that non-league match is unlikely to be rescheduled.Earthquakes aside, the Greyhound varsity volley ball team is full of talent, from its five sophomores
to its three seniors. Six juniors round out the roster.Leading the team this fall has been senior The resa Helfrick. “Teresa is probably our star; the team goes as she goes in all aspects of play,” said theAnothercoach. senior, Emory Joy, bears some responsi bility for bringing Mitts to Healdsburg this season. She’s one of several After shock Volleyball Club girls who helped recruit him to work with Healds burg’s high school team this“Emoryyear. is huge,” he said. “She’s a utility player, a Swiss-army knife—and she plays all positions at a highMittslevel.”also singled out junior Alissa Sommer for helping set a solid mood on the court: “She’s cool, calm and collected, and the others pick up on that.”Said the first-year coach, “A chain is only as good as its weakest link. We are all one unit; the team is greater than the one player.”
Home volleyball matches are played in East Gym, on the HHS campus. JV starts at 5pm, varsity usually after 6pm. Next home match is against Piner on Oct. 6, followed by Rancho Cotate on Oct. 11 and St. Vincent de Paul on Oct. 13 to end the regular season.

ANDERSON FINDS HIMSELF ALL ALONE AT THE FINISH LINE
By Christian Kallen
Despite the recent high temperatures and pouring rain cutting into competition and prac tice time, Healdsburg High School cross coun try teams have logged some miles in invitational
tournaments so far this fall, with some exciting opportunities ahead.
The prestigious Lowell Invitational on Sept. 10 found Healdsburg run ners joining about 3,000 other competitors for the 49th running of the large Bay Area meet, held at Golden Gate Park.
Highlight for Healds burg was Kaeden Ander son, who “flew through the course at a blister ing 10:52 to finish 4th place amongst 435 (soph omore) runners,” said Coach Mike Efram. The Golden Gate sophomore course measures 2.13 miles, though juniors and seniors run a 2.78 course.
A week later at Mont gomery High’s Viking Classic at Spring Lake found Anderson far
ahead in first among 60-plus competing soph omores in the two-mile course. His winning time of 10.34 was 25 seconds faster than his nearest competitor.Crosscountry races are rarely of the same length, though usually between two and three miles; the differences in course layouts and length makes it difficult to gauge a “record time,” except in comparison to the same route. In Healdsburg, the team runs a 3.0-mile course at Hoot Owl Vine yards in Alexander Val ley, where they meet Elsie Allen in a dual meet on Sept. 28, and Analy on Oct. 16.

Campo Fina
corner at 330 Healdsburg Ave. It was formerly A Divine Affair restaurant, with an Eastern Euro pean menu. The Rosens worked with the build ing’s owner to convert the rear garbage pick-up area into high tables and a bocce court, with an alley entrance off Center Street.
When they opened, it was an instant success with the foodie press, and soon eclipsed its Plaza Street progenitor, Scopa, which closed in 2017.
During the pandemic, Campo Fina converted their business to takeout options focused on their pizzas, and even in that form the restaurant remained busy and pop ular, with a line of cars parked in front for the well-run pick-up oper ation. (Their take-out operation has since been suspended.)Theclosure of Campo Fina comes at the end of a presumed 10-year lease period. Matteo Gra nados was in the same position in 2018, and sold the Mateo’s restaurant at 214 Healdsburg Ave. to Lo and Behold, including FFE, “furniture, fixtures and equipment,” in realestate speak. That enabled
OBITUARIES
a quick turn-around for the restaurant space: Mat teo’s closed, and Lo and Behold opened six months later. The decision to close Campo Fina was made after limited negotia tion with the ownership, according to a local real tor, but a compatible path forward could not be found. “There’s not a bad player in this little drama,” said Eric Drew, who interfaces with sev eral property owners and businesses in the down town area, though in this case he represented nei ther. He said the landlord offered to renegotiate as a five-year lease, and while he “threw out some num bers,” the final terms were never fully proffered.
Rosen told the Tribune that the increase in the monthly lease meant they had to look for another place to open a restau rant. “It’s definitely turn ing the world upside down,” he said, “but that’s the nature of the restau rant
Askedbusiness.”about the rent increase, and the highprice menus that may necessarily result, Rosen shrugged. “It may be that is what it takes to operate
a restaurant in Healds burg, but it doesn’t leave much room for smaller places like this,” he said, amid the clatter of plates and conversation during a Tuesday lunch rush.
But there’s no doubt that the Rosens created two popular, relatively affordable restaurants in Healdsburg with Scopa and Campo Fina, and by the end of the month, they’ll both be gone.
“Our hope is that Campo has served as a positive reflection of our community’s desire to keep community alive,” the message continued.
“Campo Fina will always be yours as a place where you celebrated a birth day, caught up with an old friend, fell in love, laughed with your server or had a ‘best ever’ food expe rience, one that touched nostalgia, made you feel alive or gave you comfort, all matters of the heart andAtsoul.”this point, the big question—whether or not the Rosens plan to open another restaurant, and if so where—has yet to be answered.
Campo Fina will remain open for business until Oct. 1, at 330 Healdsburg Ave. with a patio entrance at 331 Center St. 707-3954640, campofina.com

Pearl Bean (née Meissner) of Healdsburg, born September 5, 1938 in Madera, California to Alma and Walter Meissner, passed peacefully Friday August 19, 2022 after a lengthy illness. She was a few weeks shy of her 85th birthday. Predeceased by her beloved son Scott Walter Bean, she is survived by her husband of sixty one years, Wesley Eric (Bill) Bean, son Kevin Clark Bean, sister Lydell Rotlisberger, niece Laura Hurd, nephew Lee Rotlisberger, and many cousins and extended family.A longtime resident of Healdsburg, Pat met the love of her life, Bill, at Healdsburg Elementary School and married him in 1961 in Carson City, Nevada. A graduate of San Francisco State University, she taught in local schools for many years. Upon retirement, she became best known throughout Healdsburg as a local author, contributing to several short story collections as well as her own memoir recounting numerous tales of life growing up and living in Healdsburg and Sonoma County after WWII. In addition, she painted in acrylics and watercolor and played and taught classical guitar. She loved singing in her church choir, and it was well known that she sang before she spoke as a child. A textile artist, she created many of the banners which still adorn the walls of Healdsburg Community Church, of which she had been a member of since High School. She volunteered at the Healdsburg Senior Center, where she was President. She will be much missed by family, members of her church, and the community of Healdsburg.
A celebration of Pat’s life will be held at Healdsburg Community Church, 1100 University Ave., on Saturday October 8, 2022, at 11:00 AM.
A third-generation Californian, Carol was born on May 11, 1933 in San Francisco to Percival and Clara St. Clair (nee Allen). Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the family moved to a farm on Dry Creek in Healdsburg that had been in the Allen family since 1856. After graduating from Healdsburg High School, Carol took a job as a telephone operator in Healdsburg.
Carol was introduced to Bob Stratton, a Submariner from Pennsylvania who was on leave in Healdsburg with a shipmate. Wedded 5 weeks later on July 4, 1952, Carol and Bob were married for 58 years until Bob’s death in 2011. The couple eventually settled in Santa Rosa where they raised three boys. In Santa Rosa she volunteered as a Teacher’s Aide and worked at Sears Roebuck and Wells Fargo Mortgage Company. After retiring, Carol became very involved with the Community Club of CarolRoseland.madeher Cursillo de Cristiandad in 1977, remaining heavily involved in the Cursillo movement for the next three decades. She was one of the founders of the Redwood Empire Cursillo group, and later embraced the Kairos movement, ministering to inmates at San Quentin for more than 20 Carolyears.willbe remembered for her lived values of inclusion, caring and service to others, her gardening skills and for all of the wonderful recipes she passed down to her sons!
The family is grateful to the wonderful, caring staffs at Nazareth Care of Sonoma and Napa, to long-time friend and caregiver Percy Malone, and to Santa Rosa’s Fijian community.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, and son, Brian. She is survived by younger sister Mary Wollenbecker of San Pablo; sons Tim (Suzanne Wasilczuk) of Duluth, Minnesota, and Bob (Stacy) of Santa Rosa; daughter-in-law Pia of Oregon, three grandsons and four great granddaughters.Nofuneral service will be held.
