city coun cil since Mike McGuire ran in 2004. He came in third in the three-way race for the open 2-year seat.

I stayed positive through out the election, but I’m not surprised by the re sults. Marketing was my biggest challenge. Every current/former council member I met expressed the same idea: You need to spend money to win any election. If it didn’t work, nobody would buy signs.

But there’s more to the results. There was some vote splitting between Brigette (Mansell) and me. We foresaw this possibil ity since our platforms are very similar and met in October to discuss it. Noth ing meaningful came of the meeting, but I believe a significant number of my supporters would vote for Brigette if I didn’t exist. I don’t mean to take away from Ron’s (presumed) vic tory. He worked the hard est out of us three and deserves credit.

I’m happy with how I did. Ten percent of the votes! But my campaign is more meaningful. In 2010, a third of Healdsburg was Latino. This 33% figure is still used today, incor rectly. Today’s population

5K RUN/WALK RACE IN ITS 11TH YEAR AGAIN HONORS DREW ESQUIVEL

The morning before that big Thanksgiving din ner, the annual Healds burg Turkey Trot 5K race will give residents and vis itors a chance to burn a few hundred calories and start the holiday sea son on a sound physical foundation.

The Turkey Trot, now in its 11th year as a Healds burg tradition, kicks off at 8am on Thursday, Nov. 24, in front of the Healds burg Running Com pany, at 333 Center St. The run/walk course loops through the quiet streets of Healdsburg on a holiday

weekend, and provides an appetite-building morning for walkers, runners and witnesses all.

Once again this year, the Healdsburg Turkey Trot supports the Drew Esquivel Memorial Schol arship, helping Healds burg High student-ath letes fulfill their dreams of going to college. Esquivel was a recent HHS grad when, in 2016, he was killed in Brooklyn, NY by an intoxicated off-duty police officer. He had been a straight-A student and a member of the wrestling team, and was at the time a student at MIT in com puter science.

“Our family of five ran the Turkey Trot together in 2015,” said his mother, Susanne Esquivel. The next year, he was gone. “But our family and Sunrise Rotary are moving forward and

working to bring good through the scholarship in his name. He was an exceptional student, ath lete, and a cherished friend to his Healdsburg and MIT communities.”

At MIT, the Esquivel Memorial Duals wrestling meet also honors his mem ory, to be held on Nov. 20 this year. The annual Drew Esquivel Memorial Golf Tournament is held at Tay man Park in the fall.

“All of us were affected by the sudden, tragic pass ing of Drew Esquivel in 2016,” said Healds burg Running Company founder Skip Brand. “He was a source of pride in the local community as a great athlete, friend and academic superstar.”

Brand said the annual fun-run was a fitting time to “focus together on the future and grow his legacy

so other Healdsburg stu dent-athletes can follow in his footsteps.”

Each year, the Rotary Club of Healdsburg Sun rise awards a scholarship of up to $2500 to current

student-athletes at Healds burg High, and some of them receive additional support as they continue

Sponsorships and reg istrations support this scholarship, in partnership with the Healdsburg High School Interact Club. Sup port will also be provided to Healdsburg High Grey hound Boosters, support ing all Healdsburg High School athletes.

Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels are welcome. Awards are given to the top male and female finishers, as well as the top youth runners under the age of 13. Prizes are given at random for the costumes that have become a hallmark of this event.

Registration is being accepted in advance at 5ktrot.com. Information can also be found on Instagram @healdsburgturkeytrot and www.healdsburgrunningcompany.com

BLUES LEGEND PERFORMS TWO SETS AT THE RAVEN IN EARLY DECEMBER

The blues is many things— nothing but a bad dream, the devil’s music, a good man feeling bad and “the weirdest music I ever heard,” according to WC Handy.

But the blues can also be a good time, and that’s the path that Elvin Bishop has chosen to follow. His concerts are legendary big fun, filled with his humor and easy nature, in addi tion to his virtuoso gui tar playing, often featur ing Bishop in overalls and a checked Pendleton. He’ll bring it all to the Raven on Friday night, Dec. 2.

When Bishop brings it all, there’s a lot to bring. When he came to Chi cago in the early 1960s from Oklahoma, he was no musician, but a col lege freshman. In a recent phone conversation, Bishop remembered lis tening to the radio during

his high school years in Tulsa. “This is about the only way white people are going to hear blues in Oklahoma—this is way back before civil rights, you know. I heard it on WLAC in Nashville; they played the good stuff, and I just went crazy for it.”

Bishop was a smart kid, and made good use of it. “I got a National Merit Scholarship; as far back as the eye could see, the Bishops were farmers, you know, so that educa tion was the big thing, you know?” he drawled of his college career.

At least, he confessed, “That was my cover story.”

He enrolled at the Uni versity of Chicago, in the Hyde Park area, with its lively cultural scene, and there Bishop met harmon ica player Paul Butterfield and other blues musicians, including Charlie Mus selwhite (with whom he recorded the Grammynominated “100 Years of Blues” in 2020).

“The only way white people were going to hear blues in the early ’60s was to go to a folk festival,

Blues Back to Town

unless they were willing to go to a club in the Black ghetto, and very few were,” said Bishop. “The folk festivals always had one token blues artist. Blues was considered a small department of folk music. You’d have Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, or Josh White, one of those guys.”

Butterfield and Bishop began to get gigs at Big John’s blues club in North Chicago. Joined by bassist Jerome Arnold and drum mer Sam Lay, they became known as the Paul Butter field Blues Band in 1963.

Mike Bloomfield at first just sat in with the group, but by the time they recorded their second album he had fully taken over the lead guitar seat.

“It ended up being a real good thing,” said Bishop.

“He was way ahead of me as far as development as a player…He had a lot of stuff covered.”

In the summer of 1965, the Butterfield Blues Band with Bloomfield backed Bob Dylan’s first elec tric set at the Newport Folk Festival—though

know what I’m supposed to be doing. I’m supposed to be making people feel good.

Bishop admits he missed the show, being at another stage “hanging out with some blues guys, Mance Lipscomb and Mississippi John Hurt.”

Later that year, their first album was released, and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band became one of the driving forces of the Chicago Blues revival of 1960. Canned Heat, John Mayall and the Blues breakers, the Blues Project and the Steve Miller Blues Band all followed through the door they had opened.

Bishop rode with the band through three albums, but by 1969 both Bishop and Bloomfield were gone when Butter field Blues Band played at Woodstock. Bishop had left to form his own blues band, and the big hall venues of Bill Graham

well suited his rambunc tious, entertaining brand of blues. He played with the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead and others at both Fillmore East and West, delivering the blues message with a nod and a wink.

“I know what I'm sup posed to be doing. I’m sup posed to be making peo ple feel good,” said Bishop.

“That's pretty much my aim. I naturally gravitate in that direction—I’m a half-full as opposed to half-empty kind of guy.”

Then his career took a surprising turn—one which landed him on Wikipedia’s list of OneHit Wonders of the 1970s.

“Fooled Around and Fell in Love” was released in 1975, and suddenly the Elvin Bishop Band found themselves unexpectedly

in the Top Ten. Though it was Bishop’s song, and album, there was a catch: “Mickey Thomas sang it much better; he’s got a great voice, and he’s a great singer.”

The song reached #3 on national Billboard charts. Thomas soon left to join Starship, so he did ok too.

Bishop continued tour ing and making goodnatured records, like Big Fun and Red Dog Speaks— this last a rave-out with his one and only guitar, the Gibson ES-345 he calls Red Dog. He picked it up in the Chicago years, trad ing his Telecaster for the hollow-body Gibson, and never looked back. “I don’t take it on the road any more,” he said. “It got to be too valuable to trust the airlines with it.”

Bishop has played in almost every configu ration of blues band— the four- or five-man stage show, with or with out horns, duetting with Little Smokey Smothers. Another favorite configu ration is the trio—the Big Fun Trio, in fact, the group he’ll be playing two sets with at the Raven.

With Bishop on guitar and vocals, Willy Jordan on cajon and vocals, and Bob Welsh on guitar and piano, the trio “forges a new blues and R&B sen sibility, colored by the dis tinctive, stripped-down instrumentation and shot through with Elvin’s exu berant, down home vibe,” as Rhythm & Blues maga zine so ably put it.

Bishop’s music, like his influences, is eclectic: a lit tle New Orleans, a bit of Memphis, a lot of Chicago.

“Well, I've listened to a lot of blues and I love it all,” he said. When asked what he’s listening to now, the legendary blues musician answered, “Well, up to last week I was listening to the World Series.”

Look for Big Fun at the Raven on Friday, Dec. 2. And keep an eye out for Red Dog, too—it’s only an hour’s drive from West Marin, so there’s no need to worry about the airlines.

The Elvin Bishop and Big Fun Trio show begins at 7:30pm; general admission $40. The Big Fun Trio will play two sets; there is no opening act.

is similar to 2010, but the most recent census revealed only 26% of Healdsburg is Latino. This wasn’t a result of the pan demic. Our town’s pop ulation peaked in 2018 and is in decline. Despite being here for just as long, Latinos appear to be ones driven out. After every thing, I wanted there to at least be a historical record that we tried to seek more representation.

I have confidence in our leaders, but I urge the council to try again with Measure R from 2016 (to address housing dispar ity). Clarify the language and address what made it fail, then encourage the development of more

missing middle class and affordable homes. The middle class is shrinking, and the cost of houses is rising. Healdsburg has a large aging population, and folks aren’t realizing who can buy those houses when they go for sale.

Looking at trends, it’s possible that by the next census Healdsburg won’t be a small town of locals, but a private club of peo ple who move in this decade.

Note: As we go to press, Ron Edwards maintains a narrow 47-vote lead over Brigette Mansell for the 2-year city council seat, 1,456 to 1,409. Lopez currently has 293 votes.

Baseball Coach Recognized by State Award

MIKE DOMENICELLI GETS BASEBALL COACH OF THE YEAR IN THE STATE FOR INSPIRATIONAL 2022 SEASON

Mark Domenichelli, the gold standard for base ball coaches in Healds burg, has found his efforts rewarded. He guided the Spring 2022 varsity base ball team into the playoffs, ending the season with an 8-4 league record, 1711 overall, despite the fact that the team roster was reduced from 16 players to 11, then 10, then finally only 9 active players as the final playoff game came to an end.

With a nine-man team on the field, that doesn’t leave a lot of players on the bench. So every player on the field has got to play with all they’ve got.

“If it wasn't for the kids, none of this would have been possible any way,” Domenichelli said about the Coach of the Year award. “Sometimes you just have to get out of the way and let them play.”

Late in October, he received notice that he had been named Coach of the Year in Baseball for the 2021-22 California North Coast Section by NFSH, the National Federa tion of State High School Association.

Domenichelli himself got the news from Cici Robinson, the director of the California Interscho lastic Federation (CIF) office. “It is my pleasure to inform you that you have

been selected as the North Coast Section representa tive for the NFHS Cali fornia State Coach of the Year award in the sport of baseball for the 2021-22 school year. Your nomina tion to receive this presti gious honor is based upon the positive work that you have done with the ath letes in your program.

Congratulations!”

Robinson, in confirm ing Domenichelli’s selec tion, said the official announcement would not be made until January.

But Joshua Cavanaugh, the director of Healdsburg

High’s athletics program, shared the good news with an announcement to school staff on Nov. 9.

“This is a great honor and very well deserved,” read his message. “When you see Coach Domenichelli around, make sure to con gratulate him.”

Domenichelli has been a PE coach at the school since 1996, and baseball coach there since 1999. He has also done some coaching at Sonoma State, and locally in Cal Ripken leagues. Born and raised in Cloverdale, he played third base and shortstop in

high school, then switched to center field when he played college ball at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), Chico State and Sonoma State University (SSU).

Like father, like son: Jack Domenichelli played third base and shortstop for the Greyhounds in 2022, at least until he dove after a ball down the third base line and sepa rated his shoulder. “You know, I didn't think it was a big deal until I heard him scream,” said Coach Domenichelli.

That’s the kind of year it was, with injuries grad ually eroding the ros ter until the final game. But somehow, they sur vived, and thrived. “We just kind of Iron-Manned it,” said Domenichelli. “The kids really stepped up and played hard. They played for each other. So I just kind of sat there, you know, and let them do their thing.”

It was good enough to come in second in the North Bay Redwood league and go to the play offs, and put Healdsburg back on the baseball map. They placed four players on the first team of league

all-stars, and two more on the second—more than half of the team, 6 of 11, were so honored.

Before the COVID pandemic, however, the Greyhounds were not necessarily a team with which to be reck oned. They went 0-24 in 2019, then although the 2020 season was only five games long, they had a winning record of 3-2. The next year, also short ened by the pandemic, they went 15-5.

Though no one looks at a pandemic as a positive event, it can have positive consequences. “Especially when you go through COVID, something like that, it puts everything in a new kind of perspec tive,” said Domenichelli.

Taken together, the record of the Greyhounds in both the 2020 and 2021 season added up to an 18-7 record—and gave them the confidence to make a title run in 2022.

But Domenichelli doesn’t take any undue credit for their success.

“I'll be honest with this, it's all about the kids, basically putting

said Domenichelli about his recent coaching suc cess. “And by doing that, you hope that they play well, and when they lose, you just hope that they remember their time at school was, you know, it was fun and competitive.”

His son, Jack, will be returning this year, as well as several other players from last year’s team. And they can be cautiously optimistic that they’ll be well this coming spring.

He also gave props to assistant coach Joe Simili, and other Healdsburg coaches, including Jeff McCarthy, Chris Carter and others. “I'm happy for the town. Honestly. I'm happy for the town. I'm happy for the kids in the school and the commu nity and the parents and everybody.”

The nonprofit National Federation of State High School Associations is the body that writes the rules of competition for most high school sports and activities in the United States. NFHS's headquarters are in Indianapolis, IN. For more information, visit nfhs.org

PHOTO OF THE WEEK

Porsche Seen About Town Defies the Odds

Dang. What in the barn yard-livin’, truck-drivin’, T-shirt-wearin’, countrycroonin’, cuzzin-cussin’, doggone tarnation is this?

Photo of the week? Could be photo of the year, don’t you think? Maybe photo of a lifetime?

Seriously! Has anyone seen a Porsche like this? Porsches are strutted out polished to within an inch of their lives, fawned on, fancy-flashed, valetparked six feet from the drop-off sign, self-parked diagonally in two spaces, garaged and pampered.

And, while we’re on it: Is it Porsche like borscht? Or, is it Portia, like the young lady in Shake speare’s play? Porsche’s manual answers that question on the first page: The car is pro nounced Portia. That is the pronunciation of the inventor’s name, Ferdi nand Porsche.

Fun facts: Porsche’s manufacturing com pany is not named Porsche. The company name is: Dr. Ing. H.c.

F. Porsche GmbH. Ferdi nand Porsche started it in Stuttgart, Germany in 1931 with Adolf Rosen berger, a Jewish busi nessperson and race car driver. The company has the same name today, but GmbH is AG, denot ing a change from lim ited partnership to pub lic company.

The firm consulted on car designs. It did not manufacture cars. Its big assignment was design ing a car for the people. Hence, the Volkswagen and the famous Beetle design were born. After World War II, while Fer dinand Porsche was in prison, his son, Ferry, manufactured Porsche’s first car, the 356. The 356 is that cute, roundedbody sports car imme diately recognizable to enthusiasts.

Today, Porsche is a

100% owned subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, which also owns Audi, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Bentley, Ducati, Skoda and SEAT, among others. Porsche also builds tractors—see them at Trattore winery in nearby Dry Creek.

Back to the homo phone Portia. Shake speare’s character dis guised as a lawyer delivers a memorable and famous line: “the quality of mercy is not strained, it droppeth like the gen tle rain from heaven. … It is twice blest: it blesseth him that gives and him that takes. ’Tis mighti est in the mightiest; it becomes the throned monarch better than his crown.”

Ya see the darndest things in H’burg. Photo of the year. License blurred to protect the innocent.

NYDIA GOODE

Passed Away November 15, 2021

Nydia Francesca Jeppi Maggoria Goode, a gifted poet, musician, artist and needlepointer, visionary, and philanthropist, Nydia lived life with unbridled joy and enthusiasm for the beauty she saw in everything and everyone she met.

Nydia was born in Bakersfield, California, in the same hospital where she would bring her daughters into the world. Her formative years were spent in the Sequoia National Park amongst the Giganteum redwoods, granite boulders, bear, deer, and scampering chipmunks that never ceased to delight her.

These early experiences shaped her love of nature and curiosity of discovery through her travels as an adult. She met her husband, Dale Goode, in her sophomore year of high school. After they married, Dale’s schooling at Davis, California in the then new viticulture program would lead to their moving and settling in Sonoma County in 1965.

The Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and finally Fitch Mountain in Healdsburg were the places that Nydia and her family called home.

Nydia passed away on November 15, 2021, at her daughter’s home in Santa Rosa after a short illness. Her ashes were placed in the Mendocino Point Arena Forest at the foot of a Coastal Redwood along with the ashes of her husband Dale, and daughter Mimí.

A Celebration of Life for Nydia is being planned for early spring 2023. If you would like to be included, please email Lea Goode-Harris at: lea@ creativelabyrinths.com

HARRY KILGORE BOSWORTH

September 3, 1938 - November 8, 2022

Harry Kilgore Bosworth was born Sept. 3, 1938 to Marie (Glaser) and Obed Bosworth.

As a fourth generation Geyservillian, Harry attended Geyserville Schools, graduating in 1956 and then joined the Army hoping to become a mechanic and see Europe. Instead he was stationed in Alabama and West Texas, and trained in electronics. After discharge he came home, took classes at the Santa Rosa Junior College and joined the Jaycees.

In 1966, he was introduced to Karen Dunlavy and they married the following year. Together they built their life in Geyserville with their two daughters Rachel and Gretchen. They bought a ranch and Harry operated many local businesses including: Bosworth Electronics, Bosworth Hardware, Geyserville Water Works, Bosworth & Son Store and Olive Hill Cemetery.

Unofficially known as the Mayor of Geyserville, Harry was very active in his community. He served on many boards including: Geyserville School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis, Odd Fellows, Fire Department Board, Friends of Lake Sonoma, Community Foundation and Historical Society.

Harry had many hobbies that included: Racing crackerbox boats, racing dirt bikes, fly fishing, driving large animal teams (Sonoma County Trailblazer member), learning Italian, and playing on his excavator.

Harry lost the battle with Lymphoma on November 8, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Karen, his daughters Rachel (Dean Prat) and Gretchen (Brian Crebs), and his granddaughters Morgan and Amy Crebs, his brother Charles Beers and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Louise Bosworth Davis.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to any of the above Geyserville organizations.

BOX 6875 SANTA ROSA, CA 95406-0875 By: ROBERT CULLEN, President NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property.

NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (800) 683-2468 or visit this Internet Web site: www. servicelinkASAP.com, using the Trustee Sale number assigned to this file, T.S. #22090-PR. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. A-4764456 11/17/2022, 11/24/2022, 12/01/2022
