HEALDSBURG BRIGHTENS AS HOMES ILLUMINATE FOR SEASON

OVER A DOZEN HOMES IN THE RUNNING FOR BEST HOLIDAY LIGHT SHOW

As in every town, there are many houses in Healdsburg decorated for the holidays, with strings of colorful lights, blow-up Santas and Grinches, tableaus and crèches, and sometimes even invisible speakers playing carols or sleighbell sounds. But some of them are more decorated than others.

For Ariel Kelley, this seasonal explosion of holiday creativity was just one more thing about Healdsburg to love. Of course, Kelley is the mayor of the town for the next 11 months, so her civic pride is to be expected. But this time, she and some friends decided to launch a bestof-holiday light competition as a fundraiser for the Healdsburg Firefighter’s Association.

“I decided to launch this ‘friendly’ competition at a holiday gathering with some of my mom’s friends in Healdsburg in early December,” Kelley told the Tribune. One woman, who lost her family home in the 2019 Kincade fires, said she didn’t have the heart to decorate her rental house, but said she “has been getting her holiday fix by driving around at night with her kids to see all of the good Xmas light displays.”

So the dinner guests launched a conversation about who had the best lights and which houses were always worth visiting. Continued Kelley, “And then we decided it would be fun to create a friendly competition and have it be open to anyone who wanted to enter.”

At first, it was just word-of-mouth, as Kelley

FLOODING NOT RARE FOR RUSSIAN

RIVER TOWN

Last week, the National Weather Service issued a “coastal flood warning” for the entire Sonoma County coastal area—including Healdsburg. But a quieterthan-expected rain event over the weekend averted the dire warnings that the higher-than-normal tides would bring to coastal cities.

This week, however, the weather service again cautioned that a flood watch was in effect due to a “potent Pacific storm (that) will bring periods of moderate to heavy rain, causing localized flooding as well as rapid rises on area streams.” Most cities and towns in Sonoma and Marin counties were put on alert early Tuesday morning as rain pelted down over the

upper Russian River area, including Healdsburg.

In a single hour at 8am on Tuesday, half an inch of rain fell, part of a system that brought just over two inches of rainfall to town. That raised the season’s total to 7.33 inches; last year, at this time, Healdsburg had 18.12 inches of rain, and that was a drought year. (The so-called “rainfall year” extends from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30.)

Precipitation waned on Wednesday, but Thursday was expected to bring another three straight days of rain as an “atmospheric river” settles over the region. The water level of the Russian River is expected to crest on Saturday, New Year’s Eve, at between 12 and 14 feet, as measured at the gauging station on the river near Camp Rose. Flood state is marked at 23 feet, so the river itself is not expected to overfill its channel.

Historic highs at this

gauge include 30.8 feet on Dec. 1, 1937; 30 feet on Feb. 28, 1940; 27 feet on Dec. 23, 1964; and two 1995 high water marks,

one at 26.23 on Jan. 9, and again at 25.16 almost a year later, on Dec. 22, 1995.

Knowing that the Healdsburg Firefighter’s Association (HFA) has

a class of new reserve recruits starting in the new year, Kelley decided to make it a fundraiser for the HFA.

“We were happy the HFA was included in Mayor Kelley’s holiday contest,” said Division Chief Lance Macdonald

of Healdsburg Fire.

“There are no immediate specific plans for any funds raised in this event, but in general the HFA helps to augment training for reserve firefighters and equipment for the department.”

He added that the Healdsburg Firefighters Association can receive donations at any time via check or Venmo.

Those who want to vote for a favorite home with holiday decorations can do so on arielkelley. com; once the vote is cast, voters will be asked for a donation to the Healdsburg Firefighter’s Association. The winner will be announced on Dec. 31, New Year’s Eve, as chosen by popular vote.

“We plan to close voting on 12/30 and

announce the winner via Instagram live (@ Healdsburgmayor) on New Year's Eve. And the prize has not yet been announced, but it is going to be something very fun,” said Kelley.

‘Murder Mountain’ Makes Killer Pinot Noir

HUMBOLDT COUNTY LANDMARK INSPIRES NETFLIX AND WINEMAKING

When most people think of Humboldt County, it’s not for vineyards. Adrian Manspeaker, founder and winemaker at Joseph Jewell Wines, is hoping to change that.

THANK YOU

To our Bell’s Ambulance Service ‘work family’ for funding the Loriann and Jason dinners at a time where food wasn’t even a thought for us. You kept us well-nourished and functional.

THANK YOU Sonoma Life Support/GMR, LifeWest ambulance companies for your coverage of our response zone so we could attend Wayne’s funeral services knowing that our patients were well provided for.

THANK YOU Healdsburg Fire Department, CDF, North Sonoma County Fire District, Cloverdale Ambulance, REDCOM 911 Dispatch, for your overwhelming show of support and respect as we said our final goodbyes to Wayne. You made the grief a little less painful that day with your presence.

THANK YOU Healdsburg Hospital ER, ICU and Med. Surg staff. Your presence and kind care was a gift to our families. You made the most difficult time of our lives bearable as you not only cared for Wayne (who loved this hospital) but you cared for each one of us as we struggled thru the process. HDH is truly a gem in our midst.

THANK YOU to the other Bell’s Ambulance ‘work family’. The one that is comprised of M. D’s, RN’s, Paramedics, EMT’s, Firefighters, Caregivers, and professionals from other companies and facilities. We were given the privilege for decades of working with these expert coworkers that came to support us and take the time to pay final respects. Our hearts were warmed to see all of you.

Finally, thank you to our community and friends for the cards, flowers, food, wishes, phone calls, prayers, masses, and visits. In the midst of much sadness it became clear to see how fortunate we are to be able to live and work in such a great place and experience so much love and support. You have helped fill the hole left in our hearts.

With gratitude, The Families of Wayne F. Bell: Pamela Cadd Bell Family and Pamela Bell Simmons Family

Having grown up in Benbow in southern Humboldt County, Manspeaker attended the College of the Redwoods in Eureka from 1996 to 1998 before moving back to spend a few more years in his hometown and moving to Sonoma County with his now-wife in 2003. He started Joseph Jewell out of his garage in Windsor in 2006, first sourcing fruit from Elk Prairie, a six-acre vineyard close to Humboldt’s Myers Flat and later from the area now known as “Murder Mountain,” which also happens to be the title of a Netflix true crime documentary series.

“Some people disappeared from this area back in the day, and inevitably this is how the name ‘Murder Mountain’ came to be. Fast forward to now— the Netflix series came

out after there was another unfortunate situation in the area,” says Manspeaker.

The winemaker is hoping to help make the area known for another reason—pinot noir— and put Humboldt County on the map as the next frontier when it comes to California cool climate pinot noir growing regions.

In 2014, Manspeaker started sourcing grapes from a two-acre vineyard in Alderpoint, which is a few miles from the infamous mountain. Over the following five years, he complemented this fruit with pinot noir from additional sites in Humboldt County, including Ryan Vineyard (a 17-acre vineyard in his hometown of Benbow), Fruitland Ridge (near Elk Prairie, way up north to the furthest reaches of Humboldt County) and Phelps Vineyard in Briceland.

Manspeaker believes that Humboldt County is optimal for pinot noir because “there are a vast number of interesting and distinct microclimates in Humboldt County that are just now being discovered.”

Factors characteristic of wines grown in Humboldt County include its proximity to the Eel River and its persistent marine layer (this affects vineyards in Fruitland Ridge

or Myers Flat particularly), and overall very cool temperatures, even in higher elevation vineyards (like the Phelps Vineyard Joseph Jewell sources fruit from).

Joseph Jewell usually picks their Humboldt County fruit in late October, which is more than a month later than warmer sites in the Russian River Valley and at least a month later than the coolest Sonoma Coast and Russian River sites.

“It took me over 10 years to form relationships with all these small farmers, and their unique sites are helping me understand and learn more about the climate up there and where exactly ideal vineyards could be planted in the future,” says Manspeaker. “I think we are making really nice wines from Humboldt County, and it would seem that the critics agree, as our 2018 Alderpoint Vineyard Pinot Noir was awarded 94 points recently by Wine Enthusiast .”

If one is a fan of fresh, elegant, cool climate pinot noirs, I’d recommend visiting Joseph Jewell’s local tasting room in Forestville, where one can taste both their Humboldt County and Sonoma County pinot noirs, as well as their pét-nat of vermentino.

STILL DIGGING

TONKA TRUCKS AFTER 75 YEARS

Imagine a small kid, five years old, getting a Tonka truck for Christmas. Imagine later that kid playing with a dad who has slightly bigger toys, same color, all set-up to make playtime fantasies real.

Yup! Dad plays with a small kid in the dirt. First, how great is that? Dad plays in the dirt!

Plays and teaches at the same time—it’s a dad thing, usually. The excavator is filling the miniature dump truck. Looking closely at the right-side picture, one will see dirt pouring through massive teeth filling this toy truck, in the process making a little kid’s dreams come true.

What a picture to close out the year! Christmas thrills and chills. Oh, my goodness.

scale. Tonka began in Mound, MN, in 1946, three partners in a small schoolhouse making better quality gardening tools, calling their business Mound Metalcraft. A prior business in the schoolhouse made toy trucks and decided to sell.

In November 1955, Mound Metalcraft became Tonka Toys because the sideline toys were outselling gardening tools. The company’s new name comes from a Dakota Sioux word (tanka), meaning “big” or

“great.” There were several changes in ownership as Tonka Toys traveled the world and large toy manufacturers invested in the brand, including Palitoy (UK) and Hasbro (U.S.).

Caterpillar is the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer. It was created in 1925 through the merger of Holt Manufacturing and C. L. Best Tractor. The secret of Caterpillar’s success is track, rather than wheel, technology. At the turn of the century, Holt produced

tractors in Stockton. Early steam tractors were heavy beasts, weighing up to 20 tons.

As the San Joaquin Delta developed into farmland, heavy tractors sank in wet soil. In 1904, a prototype track with redwood slats was developed to address sinking. Basically, the wooden boards laid down to prevent sinking were turned into a continuous loop.

By 1920, Holt Manufacturing registered the “Caterpillar” trademark.

The commission gave Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) a go-ahead to install 2,822 EV charging stations at workplaces, housing complexes and public spaces in California.

The $52.2 million program will run through 2025 and will require PG&E to use 65% of the funds in underserved communities.

Also approved recently, a new mandate sets a timeline for utility companies to bring EV charging stations online. Utilities must connect customers

with EV charging stations to the grid in 125 days, take steps to make the process easier for customers,

and gather data to identify ways the energization process gets bottlenecked.

A series of mandates

from the California Air Resources Board require new vehicles sold in the state to be zero-emission, which also includes buses and trucks. The commission said that it is essential to have EV charging infrastructure in place to make this into a reality.

"Today's energization decision takes big steps to speed up the process of connecting new EV chargers to the electric grid and to make sure utilities provide customers information about how that process works," said CPUC Commissioner Clifford Rechtschaffen.

With California taking the lead in electric car sales nationwide, CPUC allowed utility companies to allocate over $1.8 billion in their budgets for EV charging stations, and ensure EV charging rates are significantly cheaper than gas.

There are currently 80,027 public and shared electric vehicle chargers, according to the California Energy Commission (CEC). Last year, the CEC found that the state will need 1.2 million chargers by 2030 in order to serve an anticipated 7.5 million EVs on the road. In October, the Governor’s Office announced that electric car sales reached 18% of total new car sales, three times the nationwide rate.

Looking Back on Year’s Musicals, Comedies

2022’S ‘TOP TORN TIX’ HIGHLIGHTS BEST OF LOCAL STAGES

Live theater continued its steady march to some semblance of normalcy in 2022, but health related-closures continue to take their toll on the North Bay theater community. After a promising start to the year, evidenced by an increase in the number and scale

of productions presented by local companies, the end of the year brought another round of COVID and flu-related cancellations and closures.

But march on they did, and ’tis time to recognize the best and/or most interesting stage work done over the past year. Here are my “Top Torn Tickets” for North Bay musicals and comedies produced in 2022:

‘Ain’t Misbehavin’’ Sonoma Arts Live

A talented cast brought energy, joy and a refreshing blast of diversity to the valley with this tribute to the music of Thomas Wright “Fats” Waller.

‘Almost, Maine’ Spreckels Theatre Company

A series of short twohanders on the subject of love that ran from the whimsical to the bittersweet, its simplicity made it the theatrical

OBITUARY

January 15, 1932 - December 22, 2022

On Thursday, December 22, 2022 Dolores “Dee” Adele Rochester, a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt passed away at the age of 90. She was born in New York City on January 15, 1932, to William and Teresa Landolfi. In February 1947, Dolores and her family relocated to Healdsburg to care for her maternal Grandfather, John Cella. Regret at leaving behind her familiar neighborhood and friends evaporated when she arrived in Healdsburg. She left Manhattan’s February snow drifts and freezing temperatures for the Mediterranean climate of Sonoma County. Dolores always said it felt like the Garden of Eden. Her grandfather raised chickens and rabbits and had a variety of fruit and nut trees growing in his yard on University Street. The comparison is understandable.

While attending Healdsburg High School Dolores made lifelong friends and met the love of her life, Alvie Rochester. Dolores graduated as the female valedictorian of Healdsburg High School’s class of 1949. In 1951, she and Alvie were married at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Healdsburg. Their three children were born in Healdsburg. In 1961 they moved to Lake County for Alvie to pursue a career in law enforcement and Dolores ultimately became bookkeeper for the Konocti Unified School District.

Dolores was a strict but loving mother, known for her housekeeping prowess and high standards of cleanliness. Many of her children’s childhood friends credit Dolores with their skills for vacuuming walls and ceilings, dusting baseboards and learning how to properly make a bed. Dolores was a wonderful cook and will be especially remembered for her minestrone.

Alvie and Dolores retired in 1991, returned to their beloved Healdsburg and rekindled old friendships. Until her late 80s, Dolores walked several miles a day with her best friend Gloria Opperman. They were familiar figures around town, walking and chatting. Dolores and Gloria also delivered Meals on Wheels every Wednesday and then went to lunch.

Dolores was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 52 years, Alvie, and her brother Robert Landolfi. She is survived by her children Barbara Gourley (Roy), Bruce Rochester (Shari) Linda Rochester (Ernie Ralston); grandchildren, Christopher Gourley, Sarah Plum (Loren), Adam Ralston and Brian Rochester; great grandchildren, Lola Plum, Ian Plum, Victoria Gourley, Colton Gourley, Emma Spaulding; nieces Tammy Sutherland, Lisa LandolfiValdovinos (Steve) and nephew Michael Landolfi.

‘The Music Man’ Spreckels Theatre Company

The curtain finally went up on this oft-pandemic-delayed production which, while a bit too idyllic in its presentation of small-town America, was very entertaining.

‘Rent’ Marin Musical Theatre Company & Novato Theater Company

What this show lacked in finesse was more than made up for by its cast’s energy, enthusiasm and heart.

equivalent of comfort food.

‘Fun Home’ Left Edge Theatre Another welcome blast of diversity in both subject matter and casting.

‘The Government Inspector’ Ross Valley Players

Nikolai Gogol’s takedown of the dishonesty, greed and stupidity that runs rampant in government is fictional comedic gold.

Fictional?

‘Hair’ 6th Street Playhouse

Proving what shocked audiences in the 1960s can still surprise staid Sonoma County audiences today, a beautifully diverse cast let it all hang out while letting the sunshine in.

‘Hank Williams: Lost Highway’ 6th Street Playhouse

A standard jukebox musical elevated by superb live music, with the added bonus of local blues legend

City Stands

Prepared

City of Healdsburg officials reassured residents that, despite the year-end closure of city offices, the city’s maintenance crew was fully staffed and anticipating calls from residents for support.

“Public works (as well as utilities) staff are on call 24-7,” the city’s public works director, Larry Zimmer, told the Tribune. “If there is an emergency, residents can call the police or fire department to report it, and it will get to the right hands.”

Zimmer said the Utility Hotline, 707-4317000, is a 24 hour a day answering service that forwards messages

A surprisingly robust production of this largescale musical by this tiny Napa company.

Shakespeare can often be laborious. Shakespeare can also be hilarious. Thankfully, this outdoor production of the Bard’s first work was the latter.

‘Woody Guthrie’s American Song’ Raven Players

Bringing a musical production to Healdsburg’s Downtown Plaza had to be quite a challenge. Challenge met. Next up, a look back at the dramas that stood out on North Bay stages in 2022.

New Year’s Storm

to the appropriate personnel. Mark Themig, the city’s community services director, confirmed that the hotline is the number to report any park or open-space related emergencies during this time as well.

During the months of December through February, the Russian River experiences its peak flooding season. The communities of the lower Russian River, such as Guerneville, are more often flooded than is Healdsburg. Major flood events have been recorded since the early 1900s, with the highest flood reaching a height of 48.8 feet in 1986, according to the Russian River Historical Society.

Locals don’t have to go back very far to remember downtown flooding in 2020, 2019, 2014 and other recent years. Perhaps next week at this time, they can add the New Year’s Flood of 2023 to their tall tales.
