BOY BASKETBALL TEAM TRYING TO DO ‘THE HARDEST THING’ A 3RD TIME Wildcats in showdown with Palo Alto Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor
Every time Los Gatos High boys basketball coach Nick Ward drives home after a game—especially the tough, gut-wrenching losses—he pulls down the sunvisor in his car to read a three-word note. “Turn it off,” Ward said moments after the Wildcats’ 71-41 win over Gunn High on Feb. 8. “Just turn it off. Just a reminder. Coaching is coaching, but when you get home, coaching is not coaching anymore. It’s dad. Could be a great day, could be a bad day, but I come home as the same person. I don’t bring work home [to my family].” Ward needed that reminder more so during a recent stretch in which the Wildcats lost three of four league contests. Despite the mini skid, Los Gatos finds itself in a familiar position: competing for the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division championship. The Wildcats play Palo Alto High—both teams have identical records of 17-6 overall and 8-3 in league—for the title on Feb. 13 (this edition went to press before the completion of the game). TOYS PROMOTE SPAYING AND NEUTERING
Los Gatos High School grad and recent Los Gatan cover star “Neon” Keon Saghari made a big impression while performing during the afterparty for halftime singer Usher, racking up thousands of likes on an Instagram video of her rollerskating next to a Las Vegas pool in Riedell Roller Skates. And Flor de Maria Rivera, who also recently graced our P1, saw ESPN host Molly Qerim wear her “Amaya” boots to Michael Rubin’s Super Bowl party. This follows on the heels of quite the successful Grammys for the LGHS alum: Actress and singer Halle Bailey wore her “Alexandria” sandals to a pre-party, singer-songwriter Bleta "Bebe" Rexha wore her “Berta” platforms to a Clive Davis gala; Grammy winner Tyla took her “Giselle” sandals to the same; while Anastasia Karanikolaou (better known as Kylie Jenner’s friend “Stassie”) opted for the “Raquel sandals at the Spotify event. And Ana Bárbara, a Mexican singer, and Muni Long, a singer and songwriter from Florida, selected Flor de Maria sandals for the official ceremony. Back in Los Gatos, locals packed Double D’s Bar and Grille on Sunday to take in what many would find turned out to be a thrilling game with a devastating outcome.

It will hear from experts in land use, business retention, public safety, tourism and culture, to review policies to revitalize downtown corridors after the Covid-19 pandemic. “Downtowns are supposed to be economic engines for our cities,” Haney said. “The last few years it's felt like the old west—tumbleweeds, boarded-up shops, and crime.”

13 HOUSING PLANS SUBMITTED

certified,” said Vice Mayor Matthew Hudes, who introduced a complicated motion to prevent multi-family units from being invited into vast swaths of the community. “It’s going to impact hundreds of residents—thousands of residents.” As Los Gatos has made minor policy changes in recent months (adopting a Housing Element Overlay Zone and easing-up on story pole requirements, for example) the critiques from HCD have been dwindling. For many items, the State had given an unofficial thumbs-up in behind-the-scenes meetings with Town staff and its consultant. The housing czar has been very clear, though: it would like to see the community permit a wider variety of residential unit styles, to create more options for people who’d like to live in the exclusive enclave at the doorstep of the companies driving global technological innovation. HCD didn’t say Los Gatos had to promise to build multi-family housing in single-family and medium-density zones. The agency is only asking the Town to commit to considering it in the future. But for many locals, this is a bridge too far. Some homeowners are worried that it’ll be more difficult to find parking in the days ahead and say evacuating during wildfires could become harder. The regularly-scheduled Council meeting was held as many people in the Santa Cruz Mountains were still dealing with road closures from a powerful storm that knocked out electricity for a good chunk of the town. Parts of some routes just outside of Los Gatos are still single-lane from 2023 tempests. “There’s fire danger in having congested roads up in the hills,” said resident Rick Kananen. “They’re already not wide enough.” Many citizens are worried that if they allow for one little crack of potential multi-family housing, the whole dam will break, causing property values to spiral. Hudes himself referenced the new State laws designed to prevent com-
munities from being more permissive of affordable housing and then reversing course later. Debating words A solid chunk of the meeting centered around whether the Town should agree to look at introducing new housing types in “a variety of ” neighborhoods or “town-wide.” It was interesting to hear the more conservative officials take up this issue once again, particularly since more liberal ones have consistently given ground on this point. Councilmember Rob Moore even included “variety” in his motion, at the prior Council meeting; HCD has said it’s okay with either. Hudes was particularly irked that the Town had gone to HCD to talk about direction provided by the Housing Element Advisory Board that differed from what was discussed by Council. Staff clarified that officials had not, in fact, changed the language back to “town-wide” (as recommended by the HEAB) and presented this to HCD behind their backs.
(Oka Lane, Lark Avenue Area, Union Avenue, Downtown Area).” Housing Element consultant Veronica Tam said her read on the motion was that it would do the “opposite” of what HCD has been asking for. Unsurprisingly, Moore, the most pro-housing voice on Council, wasn’t a fan of this approach. “I think this doesn’t make any sense,” he said. “I don’t understand this.” Councilmember Maria Ristow didn’t like the motion text either, arguing it failed to follow HCD’s direction. “It just doesn’t seem to address the comment,” she said. “I think we’re just going to go backward.” But Mayor Mary Badame saw it a little differently. “It seems to me we’re adding specificity,” she said. Hudes noted his intention was to focus residential development along higher-intensity corridors. Los Altos actually won HCD over with this sort of approach, he added. “They list the sites that they are proposing to change in the low➝ Housing, 7 Drew Penner / Los Gatan

Council was getting the chance to consider this update now, staff added. For months now, Councilmembers have been bellyaching that HCD is having staffing issues and hasn’t been clear about what exactly it wants Los Gatos to do. One thing that the agency has said, however, is it wants Los Gatos to build 150 multi-unit-style homes, instead of 50, in small or medium-density zones. The Housing Element Draft explains that this is only referring to things like accessory dwelling units, micro units, pre-fabricated homes, and clustered cottage housing—not large apartment blocks. Hudes tried a motion that sought to restrict multi-family housing in these areas. It would have modified zoning “to allow residential or increased residential intensity and/or density in a variety of neighborhoods. This includes zoning amendments already completed along higher intensity corridors with access to transit and other opportunities (North 40, Los Gatos Boulevard, Highway 9, and Winchester Boulevard) and for sites within lower-density neighborhoods
DECISIONMAKING Los Gatos Town Council debated the next steps in the Housing Element process on Feb. 6.
RENNIE JOINS THE RESISTANCE Housing, from page 6 er-density neighborhoods,” he said. Mayor Badame said Los Gatos should follow the “clever wording” Los Altos employed. But Los Gatos’ outside legal counsel, from Goldfarb & Lipman LLP, said being more specific at this stage (when HCD is okay with a vague description) could expose the Town to lawsuits if some of the neighborhoods get developed while others don’t. Councilmember Moore noted HCD’s indicated it’s fine with this section of the Draft, meaning changing it now would create obstacles to winning approval. Every day the Housing Element is uncertified is another day developers have rights to build housing that they otherwise wouldn’t. Los Gatos has already received 13 SB330 housing development plans (including duplicate addresses and preapplications), including some that mention plans to invoke the “Builder’s Remedy” law, which comes into
play when a community doesn’t have a compliant Housing Element. This motion failed 2-2 with Councilmember Rob Rennie abstaining. Hudes said it’s important to exercise restraint “so we’re not having fourplexes put up in historic neighborhoods.” Ristow would later point out that Los Gatos’ historic neighborhoods already have fourplexes. Pushing-back against Sacramento After a second recess, Hudes presented another motion to, “facilitate small multi-unit housing in certain low and medium density designations. This includes creating mixed residential neighborhoods through new and innovative housing types that meet the changing needs of Los Gatos households and expand housing choice in a variety of neighborhoods. Housing types include, but are not limited to single dwelling units, multi-family dwelling units, acces-
sory dwelling units, small and micro units, use of prefabricated homes and clustered/cottage housing. This zoning will occur in a variety of areas throughout town but NOT in areas which are vhfhsz (very high fire hazard severity zones), historic districts, adjacent to homes in our historic inventory (currently pre-1941) homes, in hillside residential zones, within 500 feet of an evacuation route and are more than ½ of a currently established public transit stop.” He clarified that he meant “or” are more than half a mile from a bus stop, which would preclude plenty more places from higher-intensity development. In response to a Los Gatan tweet about the motion, Jake Wilde, a geography and urban studies student at San Jose State University, calculated that this would only leave 9.6% of the town open for these sorts of small multi-family developments. Town Manager Laurel Prevetti threw another wrench into things when she confirmed Los Gatos doesn’t have official evacuation pathways, meaning, under Hudes’ wording, all of Los Gatos would be off-lim-
its—something the State would never go for. “Every street becomes an evacuation route,” she said. Councilmember Moore said the motion would preclude “almost the entirety of the town” and would mean Los Gatos was “backtracking.” He said Hudes’ motion actually puts Los Gatos at risk of being forced to accept more residential units from developers, because it’s likely the housing ministry will reject the new approach, causing further delays. “HCD was telling us to put more units in,” he said. “I think we have a Housing Element that’s in good condition right now, and we’re starting to undermine it.” It’s the sort of motion that Councilmember Rennie often votes down. But in this case, clearly nervous about his standing with homeowners, he decided to side with Hudes and Badame, upending the trajectory of Los Gatos’ housing policy. The motion passed 3-2, with Moore and Ristow against. After the vote, Rennie seemed unclear on what exactly he had agreed to support.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion for a love story. But even though Los Gatos was the setting of a legendary romance that once captivated the nation, the story of Charles Erskine Scott Wood and Sara Bard Field has largely been forgotten by our community. C.E.S. Wood (1852-1944) graduated from West Point in 1874. As an army lieutenant, he took part in the bloody campaign against the Nez Perce tribe, after which he transcribed Chief Joseph’s famous last words of surrender: “I will fight no more… forever”. After becoming disenchanted with the military, especially with their cruel treatment of native peoples, he resigned his commission and turned to social activism. Wood eventually became a sought-after progressive attorney whose clients included birth control pioneer Margaret Sanger and leading radical feminist Emma Goldman. Wood was married in Baltimore in 1878 and soon relocated to Portland, Or-

egon. As he emerged as one of the most influential cultural figures in the young city, Wood’s socialist views and radical politics earned him the nickname “Portland’s Anarchist Founding Father”. Sarah Bard Field (1882-1974) was born into a devout religious family with a Quaker
mother and a strict puritanical Baptist father. She was married in her late teens to Albert Ehrgott, a Baptist minister 20 years her senior. Sara eventually became disillusioned by the confines of orthodox religion and what she felt were the injustices in a capitalist system. Challenging
her stifling marriage, she emerged as an outspoken advocate for social justice and women’s rights. In 1915, Sara and two other suffragists spent 88 days driving 5,000 miles from Oregon to Washington D.C. while gathering half a million signatures on a petition demanding voting rights for women, which she then presented to Congress. Imagine the commitment they made to complete that arduous journey in an era with few paved roads, gas stations, or mechanics. In 1911, Sara was introduced to C.E.S. Wood by their mutual friend Clarence Darrow. They were immediately attracted to one another by their shared worldview. Although they were married, and he was 30 years her senior, they dared to challenge conventional norms with a flagrant affair and advocacy for free love. Discovering in one another what they lacked in their respective marriages, they publicly vowed to “make almost any sacrifice on earth to establish a life together.” Although neither was able to secure a divorce, Erskine and Sara moved to San Francisco and then to Los Gatos where they built a 34 acre “castle in the sky” where they entertained dignitaries, artists, and celebrities of their day, including John Steinbeck, Charlie Chaplin, and Ansel Adams. “The Cats” estate featured a five bedroom main house, caretaker’s gate house, poet’s cottage, and Greek amphitheater. Sara became an award-winning poet and Erskine published a satirical best seller called “Heavenly Discourse.” In 1922, Wood hired artist Robert Paine to sculpt two massive cat statues to grace the entrance to the property, feeling that the public art would be “a sort of missionary work in culture in California.” The cats, nicknamed Leo and Leona by townspeople, are still visible while driving South on Highway 17. Prompted by Erskine's failing health and the death of his wife, he and Sara (who had previously divorced) were married at “The Cats” 1938. He died six years later and she scattered his ashes in an oak grove on the property. Sara sold the estate in 1955 and moved to Berkeley where she passed away in 1974. Its mission is to reignite passion among Los Gatos residents for preserving our town’s unique character and historic treasures before they are lost forever.

CHARLIE WEDEMEYER ALL STAR GAME AWESOMENESS Jonathan Natividad
Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor
Los Gatos High School hosted the annual Charlie Wedemeyer All Star Game on Feb. 3, with the South team defeating the North squad, 28-6. The game features top graduating players from Santa Clara County and proceeds benefit ALS and Coaches Against Cancer. Charlie Wedemeyer was a beloved teacher and football coach at LGHS, and his story—living with ALS for 33 years after being given one to three years to live upon his diagnosis in 1977—became a PBS documentary and made-for-TV movie. This year, LGHS seniors Jaylen Thomas, Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung, Henry Anslinger and George Charles played for the North. Mitty coach Danny Sullivan, a 2006 LGHS graduate who led the Wildcats to a 2005 Central Coast Section championship at quarterback, guided the North team and played in the 2006 Wedemeyer game. IN THE TRENCHES Los Gatos High seniors and North team offensive linemen Henry Anslinger and George Charles prepare to block.

on and is gunning for a third consecutive league title, having won the SCVAL El Camino Division in the 2021-2022 season. “If you told me six weeks ago that we’d be going to Palo Alto with the chance to win a league title, I would sign up for that every time because it means you’re doing a lot of things right,” Ward said. “Winning your league is the hardest thing to do, and everyone is seeing it.” Indeed, the SCVAL De Anza is arguably the second best league in the Central Coast Section behind the powerful West Catholic Athletic League. Every game is a grind and the cliche that anybody can beat anybody rings true this season. By any measure—whether it’s in the MaxPreps computer numbers or the eyeball test—the teams in the De Anza Division are formidable and potent. The Wildcats’ 7-0 league start came against premier competition, and halfway through the round-robin league season it looked like they were going to
run away with the title. However, Los Gatos found things exceedingly more difficult in the second half of league play, suffering losses to Mountain View, Los Altos and Milpitas. Los Gatos rebounded in emphatic fashion by beating Gunn in a game in which it never trailed. A season-high 11 different players scored for the Wildcats, who received 16 points from Nolan Koch, 11 from Joey Rabitz, 10 from Max Brin and eight points from Scotty Brennan. Ward said he liked how the team moved the ball, played unselfishly and maintained its focus and intensity from start to finish. “We tell the guys whether you’re up by five or whether you’re up 10, 20—whatever it is—you just keep playing and you play the right way,” Ward said. “You defend, you play hard and you share the ball, and I think we have gotten away from that mostly in the second half in the last few games. You kind of get a little tight and the ball doesn’t move as much,
but obviously it was really really good tonight [vs. Gunn].” Ward’s message to the players at halftime was simple: come out with the same aggression as they did at tip-off. Two days prior to the Gunn game, Los Gatos fell to Milpitas, 49-46. “The last couple of weeks, we got off to great starts and in the second half the other team is just a little more motivated playing down, especially that game,” Ward said. “They had just a little more energy.” Los Gatos honored six of its players on Senior Night vs. Gunn, including Andre Scott-Waikar, who played a huge role in the team’s hot start. Scott-Waikar scored the first points of the game off a floater in the lane, then had the assist on a Brin 3-pointer on the team’s next possession. Moments later, Scott-Waikar induced a Gunn player control foul, resulting in a turnover. The Wildcats took advantage as Koch scored on a lay-in to make it 7-0 just 1 ½ minutes into the contest, forcing Gunn to call a timeout. That did little to change the direction of the game, as Los Gatos concluded the first quarter with a commanding
17-5 lead. Koch continues to play like a league MVP, producing double-doubles and drawing the focus of each opposing team’s defense. Los Gatos defeated Palo Alto 50-45 in the teams’ first matchup on Jan. 20. Now, the Wildcats will have to do it again to win a third consecutive league championship. “Winning your league is very, very hard, and we take a lot of pride in that,” Ward said. “It’s the hardest thing to do. Winning CCS is great—we’re not looking ahead at all—but it’s a lot harder winning your league than it is to win a tournament of three or four rounds.” The De Anza Division champion almost assuredly gets slotted in the vaunted Open Division with the elite squads in the section. “There’s a lot of implications with the Palo Alto game,” Ward said. “The way seeding goes and we know that. We’re going to tell the guys what we’ve been telling them, and that’s it’s one game and we’re not going to make it bigger than any other game. It’s 32 minutes, you play one possession at a time, nothing changes.”

47TH MIKE’S BIKES CAT’S HILL CLASSIC The San Jose Bicycle Club will hold the 48th Mike's Bikes Cat's Hill Classic bicycle race in Los Gatos on March 23. The event is known for its 23% grade climb—just a couple blocks from N. Santa Cruz Avenue. The Cat's Hill Classic is a particular type of race called a criterium (or just “crit"), where racers zoom around a short loop multiple times in a given time period. This means the racers will pass by spectators every few minutes.
LEGENDARY An Alfred Hitchcock impersonator walks across the stage as the famous director’s granddaughter, Tere Carrubba, and historian Jay Topping look on, during last year’s inaugural edition of the Alfred Hitchcock Festival.

THINKING ABOUT GETTING A NEW WOOD STOVE?
A
modern wood stove, insert, or fireplace is an excellent choice as a primary source of heat for your home. Heating your home with a modern wood stove is both economical and eco-friendly, not to mention the bonus of coziness and beauty. While open, wood burning fireplaces do not generate a meaningful amount of heat, modern wood burning stoves, inserts, and fireplaces are intended to be used as the primary source of heat for your home. With overnight burn times and air controls, heating your home with wood is now simple and green.
ARE PEOPLE STILL ALLOWED TO HEAT WITH WOOD?
Yes! Because modern wood stoves are so clean burning and efficient, and because wood is a renewable fuel source, there’s even government incentives for investing in a wood stove or insert. There’s a federal tax credit for investing in a new wood stove or insert that began last year and goes through 2032.
IS HEATING YOUR HOUSE WITH WOOD ECO-FRIENDLY?
Heating your home with a modern wood stove is eco-friendly. Wood is a renewable fuel source, locally sourced and carbon neutral. Efficiency and clean burning go hand in hand. The pollution controls are what make a modern wood stove a better and more efficient heater. A very old wood stove or open, wood burning fireplace can produce 100 grams of emissions per hour. Particulate emissions are fuel going up the chimney and polluting the air, instead of being turned into heat for your home. Modern wood fireplaces have pollution controls that burn those particulate emissions inside the stove, so that what’s coming out the chimney is mostly steam. All modern, EPA certified wood stoves emit less than 2 grams of emissions per hour.
PROJECT COST
Different options for brand and material, along with variables with installation make it so there is a wide range of cost for getting a wood stove. Your local fireplace store will be
able to give you specific pricing, so that you know exactly how much the project will be before you commit to moving forward. With the tax credit that’s happening, now is a great time to invest.
HOW TO GET STARTED
Stop by your local fireplace store and have an industry professional help you pick the right wood stove for you. It’s good to be prepared with the approximate square footage of the space you’re heating. Photos are also helpful, especially if you’re interested in getting an insert. While in the showroom you can look at displays and make choices about which options will be best for you and your home. If you need an installer, a professional installer will then come to your home for a site check. They will put together your pipe list, make sure everything will fit and look nice, then give you an exact bid for installation.
RETAILER
There are many decisions to be made when choosing a fireplace. These decisions can be
made easier by working with a great local retailer. The best stores will have knowledgeable, experienced staff who can help walk you through the project. They’ll be able to provide technical advice, or connect you with a qualified, experienced installer if needed. The store you choose to do business with will help you with post-installation service and answer any questions that come up. A high-quality fireplace is built to last 20-25 years, so the folks you choose to work with are people you’ll be connected to for years to come. Please consider choosing Woodstove & Sun to help you with your fireplace or outdoor living needs.
