PARTICIPANTS WORKSHOP COMMUNITY CENTER PLANS

Options envisioned during event at LG Masonic Hall

Dinah Cotton, Contributor

“Our goal is simple: let’s work together to plan a brand new, state-of-the-art, community center that will welcome all age levels and be something that we can all be proud of in Los Gatos…Your input, community input, is what will take this to the next level!”

They put on their thinking caps and got to work.

On Thursday, June 20 at the Los Gatos Masonic Hall, the Los Gatos Community Center Project began its investigation of what our community would like in a new central hub.

Ginger McDonald, Tom Picraux, Alan Feinberg, Ryan Rosenberg, Vice Mayor Matthew Hudes and Tylor Taylor were well-known local faces on the agenda at the gathering of this dynamic group.

Extensive research is going into what would fit best in our community. The question “Why do we need a community center?” was explored.

The main consensus among attendees was to be recorded in the group breakdown, with

TREE WORK COMPLETED AT CASTLE ROCK STATE PARK

On Saturday, volunteers of the global nonprofit Dr. Shri. Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Pratishthan completed a conservation drive at Castle Rock State Park, which is located along Skyline Boulevard.

Volunteer efforts included removing Douglas fir saplings that officials said could promote the spread of flames during a wildfire.

“This whole event was coordinated with California State Parks,” said coordinator Ajinkya Takawale. “We had a ranger with us.”

The volunteers arrived from places like Sunnyvale, San Jose and the East Bay city of Dublin around 10:30am and worked until 1:30pm.

“We are a spiritual organization not based on any religion,” Takawale explained. “This is just one event, but the impact that we are causing is rippling throughout the US.”

The group recently took on two other tree conservation and weeding programs in the Bay Area. More than 30 volunteers collected 930 pounds of garbage, weeds and trash and removed invasive species, including iceplant, a shrub native to South Africa.

Takawale said while the organization has been doing volunteer work overseas for decades, as members immigrate to places like Canada, Australia and Silicon Valley, the number

Varsha Kavade, a volunteer media representative with the organization, recently had the chance to participate in a “mega cleanliness and tree conservation drive” held on April 27 at 21 locations in New York and New Jersey.

“It’s just an honor to be a part of any event, to be honest,” she said. “To get a chance to work toward a cleaner and greener environment is what everyone wants.”

SERIES FEATURES MJF REGIONAL BAND & VOCAL ENSEMBLE

On July 17, Los Gatos Music and Arts will present MJF Regional Band & Vocal Ensemble as part of the Jazz on the Plazz concert series.

The event will take place from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Town Plaza Park. The festival features a new concert every Wednesday evening through Aug. 21.

Monterey Jazz Festival officials say they’re thrilled MJF Regional All-Star Band and Vocal Ensemble—along with the Regional All-Star Middle School Combo—will return to Los Gatos, in support of music education in schools.

LIONS CLUB AWARDS 10 SCHOLARSHIPS

The Los Gatos Lions Club awarded a total of 10 scholarships totaling $11,000 to graduating Los Gatos High seniors. The club hosted the recipients at their regular luncheon meeting on June 12. The most prestigious of the scholarships granted by the Lions is in the name of longtime LGHS principal Ted Simonson.

Two of the scholarships are awarded in the name of former LGHS football coach Charlie Wedemeyer and another scholarship is awarded in the name of Chris Destro, which goes to an outstanding student headed toward a career in medicine or nursing. Additionally, five General Scholarships are awarded. The Lions Club, whose motto is “We serve,” places an emphasis on community service in choosing its recipients. Fittingly, two of the graduates not pictured had already left for large homebuilding service projects.

majority rule—a democratic tradition. Urban planning interns Adilene Moreno and Tishrona Godfrey assisted in the preparation of this dreaming workshop.

IMAGINATIONS RUN FREE

Pre-registered participants as well as those who dropped by were given a number at registration and told to sit with their group.

Each had a moderator and a scribe.

Picraux gave an introduction and Feinberg, a Los Gatan history columnist, welcomed participants and provided useful information.

Attendees learned details about other community centers in the Bay Area. There were easels, markers and huge notepads stationed throughout the meeting hall.

DISCUSSION POINTS

Within the groups, voices were heard and noted.

Moderators asked what people appreciated about the other centers and what they didn’t.

Generally, most of these active folks in Los Gatos favored the goal of having a larger and more inclusive community center.

As more Los Gatans enter the semior full-retirement generation, the needs of the community are changing. Participants commented that the existing center needs updating, and the town has outgrown the existing community center and recreation facilities.

Some asked, why not have a large venue for local events, available for rentals, and then invite in small conventions and seminars?

DID SOMEONE SAY BUFFET?

A delicious buffet dinner (meats provided by Los Gatos Meats) was provided after the first group breakdown.

Afterwards, the group again met to hear the summaries.

Attendees discussed opinions about “must have,” “nice to have” and “not needed” items.

Hudes and Picraux concluded with closing remarks and next steps, including how to engage further and support the mission to create a new community center.

A timeline for 2024 was shared.

The way the event played out suggests that the community center project is a goal within reach.

And then, in true Los Gatos style, folks gathered for a wine and dessert social.

LGLL INTERMEDIATE ALL STARS WIN DISTRICT 12 TITLE

9-12U teams in contention for deep postseason run

Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor

When it comes to the All Star tournament season, Los Gatos Little League knows how to represent.

While the 9-and-under, 10U, 11U and 12U teams entered this week’s play still in contention for a championship, the 13U Intermediate squad already won its District 12 championship on June 17. With just two teams fielding an Intermediate team this year in District 12, Los Gatos and Quito-Saratoga squared off in a bestof-three series to decide who would move on to the Sectional round.

Los Gatos lost the first game 6-3 on June 14 before answering with a 11-1 mercy-rule victory the next day.

That set up a winner-take-all game two days later, and Los Gatos prevailed 5-4 to take home the title on its home field. Los Gatos led 5-0 entering the top of the seventh inning before

narrowly avoiding what would’ve been a monumental collapse.

Saratoga was down to its final strike before rallying for four runs and putting the tying runner on third base when Los Gatos second baseman Reef Rahimi snagged a line drive to end the game. Ali Rahimi, the player’s father and Intermediate team manager, felt equal parts relief and pride afterward.

“What I liked most about the team is they didn’t fall apart,” he said.

“When you’re leading 5-0, two outs and a full count, and it goes to 5-4, that can really drain you. That’s some serious momentum for the other team. But our boys kept it together, kept their cool and persevered. They were all awesome, they all played incredibly well and showed amazing heart.”

Los Gatos received a bye in the Section 5 Tournament and plays its first game on June 29 at 3pm at Machado Park in Santa Clara.

The Intermediate team roster includes Cody Fischer, Jason Law, Reef

Rahimi, Luke Willerer, Henry Connors, Cade Zimmer, Carson Reynolds, Randy Hanson, Frankie Czyz, Grey Curtis, Owen Evans, Ray He and Alex Meng. The assistant coaches are Tom Willerer and Jason He.

Every player was a member of last year’s 12U team that advanced to the NorCal Regional round. In the winnertake-all game against Quito-Saratoga, Reynolds started and put Los Gatos in prime position to win. He delivered sixplus innings before having to depart after reaching the pitch count limit. However, relievers Law and Hanson came in to close things out, preserving a superb performance from Reynolds.

“For all intents and purposes, Carson was throwing a no-hitter until he had to be taken out,” Rahimi said. “He was crushing it.”

Rahimi praised the pitching of Czyz and Zimmer in the first two games, and also mentioned the solid play of catcher Fischer.

“Cody was exceptional behind the plate,” Rahimi said.

DELIVERING Los Gatos 10-and-under All Star pitcher Barrett Laubach receives congratulations from teammate Leo Fan after throwing a complete-game gem in a 6-0 win over Cambrian Park on June 22.

The Intermediate manager admitted things got rather nerve-wracking toward the end, which made the team’s ability to close things out all the more impressive.

“Up 5-0 and all of a sudden it’s 5-4, it was crazy,” he said. “Then they hit a solid line drive and an amazing catch by Reef for the win. Just a great game.”

In other action, the LGLL 9U team went 2-2 in pool play and needs Lincoln Glen to lose its final pool game to have any shot of advancing to Thursday’s semifinal knockout round. The 10U team was 2-1 entering its final pool game against Quito-Saratoga on June 25 (this edition went to press before the start of the game).

A win would clinch a spot in Thursday’s semifinals. The 11U team won its opening game and plays its second pool game on June 26. The 12U Major All Stars have looked impressive in their first two contests, beating Willow Glen 11-0 and Branham Hills 8-4 to seize the early lead in the North Pool standings.

CHAMPS The Los Gatos Intermediate All Star team is all smiles after beating Quito-Saratoga 5-4 in the District 12 championship game on June 17.

TESTAROSSA WINERY ANNOUNCES NEW RESTAURANT

Bistro from page 1

Helmed by Chef Nadiv Geiger, who came aboard in 2014 to head the culinary team in support of the winery’s robust event schedule, Bistro 107 will have its own separate area in the courtyard of the old Novitiate winery. As such, it will provide a separate menu and unique dining experience.

According to the Testarossa team, at Bistro 107, it’s all about the harmony between food and wine. Proprietor Rob Jensen says that club members have been after him for years to broaden the food program. The team has fielded hundreds of requests to offer entrees for dinners and lunches.

“We decided to make the investment to enable a full dining experience for the general public at Testarossa’s 136-year-old winery in Los Gatos,” Jensen says. “As of later this summer, Chef Nadiv’s innovative wine country cuisine will be available to everyone at Bistro 107.” A grand opening is planned for August, with a soft opening slated for mid-July.

geared toward members increased in number and scope. Harvest dinners and barrel tastings were planned. Grower Luncheons—where members could meet the people whose hands worked the land from which the ever-growing Testarossa portfolio was sourced—became quite a popular series. Providing food for those events was brought in house in 2014, granting greater flexibility and control.

Bistro 107 represents a new turn yet for Testarossa, and is not to be confused with Wine Bar 107, which was established in 2012 as a benefit for wine club members. That beautiful outdoor area, surrounded by hundredyear-old sycamores, oaks and redwoods, quickly became the go-to spot for plates of cheese, charcuterie and smoked fish, as well as mezze platters, all to enjoy alongside glasses of Testarossa wine. While Wine Bar 107 will continue to fill a niche for club members and their guests who want to hang out and drink more after tasting a flight of Testarossa wine, Bistro 107 is oriented more toward formal lunch and dinner meals.

Wine will be available by the glass, flight or bottle in the outdoor setting. And guests will have access to an extensive library of limited-edition vintages, to spark conversation and further enliven the dining adventure.

TEAM EFFORT

Trained under multiple Michelin-star chefs, Geiger creates classic dishes with modern flavors. And he sure has fun doing it. This is what’s come to be known as Los Gatos “wine country cuisine”—plates made with fresh ingredients, paired with the fruits of local vineyards.

Owner Jensen sees the dining expansion as an opportunity to give guests another avenue for enjoying the historic property and award-winning wines from Testarossa’s deep cellar.

“We will feature outdoor dining year-round,” Jensen says. “We have giant shade sails for the summer heat, and clear, heated tents during the colder winter months. Wine Bar 107 will continue for those who are looking for a lighter wine and small bite experience, with Bistro 107 available for those who are looking for that perfect ‘wine country dining and wine’ experience.”

Jensen adds that guests will be able to choose from more than 300 library

THIRD ANNUAL JOLLY10K FUN RUN SET FOR JULY 20

Organization behind fentanyl awareness event achieves nonprofit status

Drew Penner, Editor

July 24 will mark four years since Leslie Gentry’s 22-year-old son, Jolly Jones, died while detoxing from fentanyl.

Gentry was living in San Jose and working in Los Gatos at the time, so she decided to hold an awareness hike here in town, exactly a year later.

Now in its third incarnation, the Jolly10k Fun Run has grown, and Gentry has built her organization, Jolly Solutions, Inc., into an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

“We got that status about three months ago,” she said. “I’m pretty excited about that. It’s brand, brand new.”

The name of the run comes from the screen name her son used on the internet.

The route, which participants will trace on Saturday, July 20, is about 6.9 miles.

This year’s event begins at 8am (day-of registration at 8am), starting at Balzer Field going up Jones Trail to the top of the open space preserve, down to Alma bridge by the dam (where there will be a water station), then back down Los Gatos Creek Trail.

The raffle begins at 10:30am.

There will be booths with free Narcan, which can be administered

during an overdose, and other recovery resources and speakers, including a couple mothers who’ve lost children to fentanyl.

Last year, Gentry recalled, a mom whose son had just been killed by fentanyl attended.

“She was able to be comforted. We let her know she wasn’t alone,” Gentry said. “We connected with her. That’s really what I love about this event. We’re opening the doors for a conversation. Because addiction and drugs is such a taboo.”

The event is also a fundraiser for Homes of a Loving Father, a nonprofit men’s recovery home in San Jose.

As time passes, Gentry has begun rebuilding her life. She recently got engaged and is planning her September wedding in Lake Tahoe.

And now in year three of running the fun run, Gentry has a much better handle on how to pull off the event.

“My team has it down finally,” she said. “It’s wonderful, because now I have people reaching out to me.”

For example, she’s been in touch with a Saratoga High School student who wanted to create a positive impact within his school community.

“He was trying to fight fentanyl at his school at Saratoga High,” she said.

Gentry is trying to get the message out to the youth that medical professionals aren’t in the business of getting you in trouble if you call for help when

a friend is in distress due to fentanyl. “That’s one thing that I wish that all people knew: if the unthinkable happens and you get fentanyl-laced drugs or pills, call an ambulance,” she said.

Kona Ice and Grillman food trucks will be at the event.

Gentry is also accepting photos of fentanyl victims (include their name and age: jolly10krun@gmail.com) to be recognized on a banner.

“There’s no words for what that means to a parent, because they know that people haven’t forgotten their child,” she said. “Our biggest fear, as parents, is that people will forget that our child lived.”

Gentry definitely hasn’t forgotten Jolly.

“There’s certain times where it seems like it was just a moment ago he was here,” she said. “And then, other times it feels like it was so long ago that I heard his voice.”

Jones’ addiction began while taking pain pills to cope with injuries from football and a violent attack.

“It totally destroyed his life,” she said. “He went to get help.”

He died while detoxing at a recovery home in San Jose.

Suddenly stopping fentanyl usage without proper medical treatment can lead to life-threatening withdrawal symptoms, according to prairierecovery.com.

“I even find three years later that there’s moments every day where I gasp

for breath, because a thought comes, or a song comes on,” she said. “But I don’t drown anymore…I can feel the pain and keep my head above water.”

Jones is still her first thought when she wakes up.

“I can hold onto the good things about him,” she said. “I still cry, but I can smile.”

Sounds of Summer provides respite from beach traffic for locals

Dinah Cotton, Contributor

Traffic was impossible, but at least the downtowners could walk.

The music fans appeared in Town Plaza Park Saturday to take in bluegrass and Americana tunes, not to leave out zydeco.

Those who arrived prior to the noon start time staked their picnic blankets and chairs in the shade. Even those areas were hot.

Music wafted around town as people danced on the grass, while children—and a few adults—splashed in the fountain.

Fresh from the water, one of the children, Siena Matson, 4, sported a gigantic smile.

Headliner Andre Thierry provided a soulful display of zydeco music with the help of his accordion.

The Los Gatos Morning Rotary crew outdid themselves presenting lemonade, amazing local wines and refreshing wine with fruit (and good cheer).
