SAN DIMAS OFFICIAL AS NEW TOWN MANAGER

Chris Constantin has worked in government for nearly 3 decades

Staff Report

On Aug 15, the Town of Los Gatos announced San Dimas City Manager Chris Constantin will replace outgoing Town Manager Laurel Prevetti.

His start date is Nov. 4. Constantin brings more than 27 years of government experience, including in city management, public safety, fiscal responsibility, education and community engagement.

According to Los Gatos officials, his time in San Dimas was marked by significant accomplishments, including resolving a major transit issue that saved the City over $30 million, addressing quality of life issues including homelessness and blight, modernizing city systems and processes, significantly enhancing wildfire and disaster planning, and enhancing public safety through community initiatives.

NUDIST RESORT LUPIN LODGE PREPS 90TH BIRTHDAY WEEKENDER

Santa Cruz Mountains property has been listed for $32.8 million

When Joe Pollifrone, a broker for Christie’s International Sereno, told colleagues about the $32.8 million listing he picked up in December, they seemed surprised and perhaps a little jealous.

The oldest business in the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce, the famous— some would say infamous—Lupin Lodge, a nudist resort nestled in the Santa Cruz Mountains above the Lexington Reservoir, had been put up for sale, and he was trying to find someone to buy it.

“Okay Joe, are you a member?” they would say.

“No,” he’d reply.

“Well, how’d you get the listing?” they’d continue.

Campground officials say there’s been interest in the 112-acre property, but no concrete offers.

And as Pollifrone reaches out to nudists, prospective winery developers and educators in an effort to identify someone who wants to take over the deed, Lupin Lodge is preparing to celebrate 90 years in existence.

The fact that the site is planning its big 9-oh bash this year, not next, is a

result of some digging that occurred in recent months.

As Lodge archivists combed through old papers and photographs, they turned up an advertisement for the initial opening—which, it turned out, took place a year earlier than originally thought.

Charles Kuo, the operations manager, said one of the things he’s most

looking forward to will be the historical slideshow about the business to be presented by Lori Kay Stout.

While there will be plenty of fun activities, it will still be bittersweet knowing the community may soon be dissolved, he adds.

“We could have a 91 or a 92, but we may not,” he said. “With the uncertainty, we want to make the most of every year.”

CAMPBELL RESIDENT PENNING NOVEL SET IN 1940’S SF CHINATOWN

As Kyla Zhao preps for book launch, publisher snaps up her next

When the Los Gatan reached Campbell resident Kyla Zhao by phone, just weeks before the launch of her children’s novel about a girl who plays chess, she was in Seoul.

The author and tech industry professional, who is originally from Singapore, said it was nice to be back in Asia.

Her trip to South Korea was well deserved. Right now she’s in the eye of a hurricane.

Zhao’s third book, May the Best Player Win, about Bay Area middle-schooler named May Li who has to navigate

negative reactions from teammates after winning a chess award, drops Sept. 17.

It was only January when her sophomore novel, Valley Verified—about a fashion writer who takes a job in Silicon Valley—came out.

And she recently sold a fourth book.

“It is my first historical novel,” she said, commenting on her range as an author. “I’m just interested—and fascinated—by many different things.”

In fact, she just finished the first draft.

“It took me about one-and-a-half months,” she said. “When I start writing a book, I feel like I almost end up entering a manic episode.”

Zhao reveals her strategy for keeping the creative juices flowing: frequent walks around the neighborhood. Her fitness app offers proof of just how much she relies on this technique.

The weekender, running Aug. 2325, will be held at the 20600 Aldercroft Heights Rd. retreat center, and is open to the public.

2023 JAZZ ON THE PLAZZ SEASON REACHES FINALE

Organizers turning their attention to upcoming Gala

Author Kelly Clancy’s name was misspelled in last week’s article titled “Suzuki: No, game theory hasn’t infected Town planning.” We regret the error.

Dinah Cotton, Contributor

Tony Lindsay, lead singer of the original Santana, is scheduled to perform at Town Plaza Park tonight with the Bay Area’s ultimate Santana Tribute band CARNAVAL!, concluding the 22nd year of Jazz on the Plazz.

“We know how fortunate we are to have such wonderful artists perform in Los Gatos,” said Jonathan Knowles, chairman of the board for Los Gatos Music & Arts (LGM&A), which produced the “Sounds of Summer” series. “Our reputation, our venue and our hospitality, allows us to secure returning international and local recognized talent, and to attract newer artists.”

BEHIND THE CURTAIN

Knowles, along with Teri Hope, founder and president, and Ginger Taylor McDonald, secretary, and 50-or-so volunteers, all help out to make this happen. In just a few hours our Town Plaza is transformed into a stage Chairs are arranged, food and drinks set out, and folks arrive on foot, by electric and pedal bike, or in their car to enjoy an outdoor evening of jazz—some as early as three in the afternoon.

In the Plaza’s outer areas, out a bit from the VIP area and center stage, folks set up their portable chairs, camping tables and picnic nibbles. Candelabras have even been spotted.

Others choose to take advantage of the hospitality area, where—for a small fee—local foods and wines are offered, under the towering redwoods.

Hope is a true jazz heroine who, from behind the scenes, arranges the various artists. She founded this venue to bring live music to Los Gatos, and promote art and music education for youth. Hope understands how to treat artists that come to town. Organizers say their focus is to make the experience as enjoyable and professional as possible.

THE MISSION

As the summer brochure states, “Los Gatos Music & Arts is dedicated to nurturing the arts through concerts, festivals, workshops, master classes and educational activities for youth.”

LGM&A has the communities’ generous support.

Every Wednesday over the past nine weeks, the Plaza saw the community pitching in to support the mission of this small 501c3 nonprofit.

LGM&A GALA

The upcoming annual silent-and-live auction Gala will be raising funds to support LGM&A’s mission.

This year it will be held at Hotel Los Gatos, on 210 E. Main St., Sunday, Sept. 22, from 6pm-10pm.

Black Tie is suggested and “vintage glam” wear is encouraged.

Delicious bites and libations to be provided by Dio Deka.

There will be a 360-degree photo booth and on-site parking.

Los Gatan Elaine Cardinale noted the Gala will likely sell out.

“It is the best ticket in Town, and the music of Gunhild Carling, the queen of swing, will entertain us,” she said. “Plus, we are helping in supporting music and arts in our communities.”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

The Game We’re All Losing

Ah, game theory in urban planning—a concept so elusive and mysterious that it might as well come with a decoder ring and a secret handshake. Mr. Suzuki’s editorial raises a valid point: if you’re going to criticize something, you should at least prove it exists. And let’s be honest, explaining game theory in urban planning is about as easy as deciphering ancient hieroglyphics after a couple of margaritas.

But to be fair to Mr. Blum, just because Mr. Suzuki may not have explicitly encountered game

theory as a former Planning Commissioner and a current Vice Chair of the Complete Streets and Transportation Commission, does not mean its principles don’t underlie urban planning tools and strategies—especially in scenarios involving complex negotiations and competing interests. For example, in the planning of congestion pricing schemes in cities like London and Singapore, game theory models have been extensively used to predict how drivers might alter their behavior in response to tolls.

So, to Mr. Suzuki I say, Bravo! You’ve managed to highlight

how complex and utterly incomprehensible game theory can be when applied to urban planning.

But perhaps the real game here is trying to find practical solutions to the very real urban planning issues the town is facing from multiple Builder’s Remedy applications, bone crushing beach traffic that exists today, not to mention more congestion to come from housing developments—and that, my friends, is a game no one’s winning.

SPORTS LG FOOTBALL SQUAD AIMS FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT LEAGUE TITLE

After historic season, Wildcats reload for another drive

Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor

Advancing to its first-ever CIF State Championship Bowl Game last season is still fresh in the minds of the Los Gatos High football team.

After all, the Wildcats played that contest a 45-42 loss to Central Valley Christian in the Division 2-A final just seven months ago. The 2023 season was a historic one for the pe -

rennial powerhouse program, which finished 12-3 and included a fourth consecutive league championship, a Central Coast Section title and a NorCal playoff victory over El Cerrito.

“Most of the guys on the team now were with us for that playoff run, so they got a nice taste firsthand of what it feels like to win a CCS championship and NorCal Bowl Game,” said Mark Krail, who is entering his 12th season as the Los Gatos coach. “Obviously, the icing on the cake was going to Pasadena and playing CVC–that was an experience they will always cherish and the ones

who are back have it fresh in their mind what a great time it was, and that maybe that’s where we would love to get again.”

Long established as one of the premier programs in the CCS, the Wildcats have talent and plenty of depth as their 70-man roster indicates. The numbers allow for competition at nearly every position, creating a dynamic environment in which players are constantly pushing each other and improving.

Krail said the team is particularly deep at linebacker, a unit that includes RJ Cannan, Austin Krug, Andrew Sandoval and Mason Wend.

“We’ve got maybe eight kids we feel like we can put out there and play linebacker and that doesn’t include Henry (Masters),” said Krail, referring to the 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior who earned Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division first team honors last season but has been playing safety all summer. “Henry is such a mature kid, so fun to coach and has got a great outlook on things. I'll ask guys sometimes, ‘Alright, who's going to lift us up?’ It’s always Henry. He provides juice for our team.”

Masters also figures to make an im-

pact on the offensive side of the ball as one of the team’s running backs. Brayden Smith and Hayden Benjamin will also figure into the run game, and as is the case most years, Krail expects other players to emerge at some point in the season and make an impact at running back.

The offensive line should be stout again with returning starters Matt Ludeman and Leo Cocchiglia. Ludeman, a 6-2, 258-pound center, earned PAL Bay Division Co-Offensive Linemen of the Year honors last season. Cocchiglia, a 6-4, 245-pound senior and Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo-commit, plays the team’s strong guard position.

“Leo will be a stalwart on the O-line, for sure,” Krail said. “We build around him because our guards pull a lot and are really active in our offense. And Matt is as solid as it gets. He’s very smart, makes all the line calls, has gotten stronger in the off-season and is our leader on the offensive line.”

Cocchiglia also can play on the defensive line, but Krail’s preference would be for his linemen to go one way to lessen the wear and tear on their body and maximize their effectiveness.

Owen Panu, a returning first team all league tight end, was a big-time playmaker toward the end of the 2023 season.

“Owen played great for us at tight end and he’s gotten bigger, is a little taller and has had a great camp,” Krail said. Returning junior wide receiver Max

Thomas has impressed Krail and excelled in the seven-on-seven summer season. Fellow junior Beau Musser also has the potential to be an impact player in the pass game.

Speaking of passing, one of the team’s biggest question marks comes at the all-important quarterback position.

As of Aug. 18, Krail said the starting spot was still to be determined.

“We’ve got five quarterbacks–that’s an embarrassment of riches,” Krail said. “Right now the competition really seems to be Scotty Brennan and Callum Schweitzer, who was the starter on the JV team that went undefeated last year. He’s taken a lot of snaps (in practice). One thing he lacks is varsity experience. But he’s a really good football player, and he knows how to run a game—and knows our offense well.”

Last season, Brennan saw some action as the backup QB, showing flashes of brilliance.

“Scotty didn’t start any games last year, but early on he was on the field quite a bit,” Krail said. “Scotty had quite a good resume of experience that first half of the year, and he’s got that under-the-lights experience under his belt. So, it’s going to be a great competition for that position.”

Franklin White III and Jake Gerber are returning starters on the defensive line, while Leon Sarashki can play cornerback and safety.

Los Gatos opens the season at Soquel High on Aug. 30 at 7:30pm.

LIVES

Codina Lundgard

January 6, 1930 – August 29, 2021

Joan Codina Lundgard of Los Gatos, CA passed away on August 29, 2021 at the age of 91 while at the Saratoga Retirement Community Skilled Nursing Center. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 6, 1930, the youngest of six daughters of Peter and Madeleine Codina.

As a very young child, Joan lived a year in Spain before the family moved to Packanack Lake, New Jersey. Through elementary and high school Joan attended boarding schools in New York, Washington DC, and New Jersey where her father operated a successful cork importing and manufacturing business. She later attended Rockford College in Illinois, graduating in 1951 with a major in English and minor in Spanish. She spent summers during college teaching swimming at a youth camp in Bear Mountain, NY and after college lived with a family in Madrid for the summer while enrolled in the Experiment in International Living program.

At Rockford College Joan met Folke G. Lundgard and they were married in 1951 in New Jersey by her brother-in-law, the Rev. Sanford Cutler. The couple lived in Rockford where Folke worked and their two sons, Richard and Robert, were born. In 1960 the family relocated to Los Gatos, California. Joan then returned to school and in 1967 was awarded an MS degree in Library Science from San Jose State University. As a librarian she had a 31-year career at Bellarmine College Preparatory where she was instrumental in developing an exemplary library and media center and successfully obtaining government grants to fund library improvements. She was well known for her friendship, generosity, professionalism and dedication in working with students, teachers, and library volunteers. In honor of her service and in recognition as the first woman faculty member at Bellarmine, Joan attended a dedication in 2021 of a library conference room named in her honor. For her 90th birthday family members and friends from across the country attended a celebration at her home.

Joan was a member of American Library Association, California Media Library Educators Association, California Reading Association, and Los Gatos Friends of the Library. She was an avid reader and was a member of two book clubs for many years. She also loved quilting, gourmet cooking, and gardening. Joan is survived by her sons and four grandsons. At her request, in her memory, please give flowers and a book to someone you love.

TASTE OF LOS GATOS, ART & WINE FEST

Food & Bev fests, from page 1

And the way organizers have described preparations to the newspaper, it’s clear both marquee events will have plenty of these town “favorites” on offer.

The Taste of Los Gatos concept was conceived after the popular pandemic-era Thursday Promenades series came to an end. While turning the main downtown drag over to pedestrians each week proved too expensive to continue every week, the idea itself was too beloved to be abandoned entirely. North Santa Cruz Avenue will once again be closed to vehicles for festive purposes, this time (from Main Street to Bachmann Avenue) thanks to Taste of Los Gatos, Saturday, Sept. 14, from 1-5 pm.

“We decided to do this one-time, endof-the-summer festival to highlight our restaurants,” said Randi Chen, Taste of Los Gatos event coordinator. “Los Gatos over the last few years has gotten some great restaurants and we want to expose them to everybody.”

Local long-standing favorites like The Pastaria, Zona Rosa and Willow Street Kitchen are participating, alongside new additions such as Gardenia Los Gatos, Dar Restaurant & Bar and Breaking Dawn Brunch.

While the event was inspired by the late Promenades, Taste of Los Gatos promises to bring a more upscale

vibe to attendees. Rather than putting booths in the street, participating restaurants will set aside a table inside for tasting. Attendees can pre-buy a tasting ticket online at the Chamber of Commerce website for $45 or purchase one onsite for $50. The ticket will provide access to delicious food and drinks prepared by over twenty local restaurants. Attendees may also purchase wine and beer separately at drink booths hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Part of the proceeds will go to support the police department.

While the tasting aspect is by purchase only, the street festival portion will be free and open to all. Attendees can expect outdoor games, kids’ activities and live band performances by Rusty Rock n’ Roll, Masterpiece and other local groups.

Chen hopes attendees enjoy Los Gatos for all it has to offer, beyond amazing food and drink, including local camaraderie.

“The sense of community is what we strived for with the Promenades to begin with, so we hope we get some of that (with this event) as well,” said Chen. Community is what has kept the Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival a beloved town tradition for half a century. Beginning in 1971, the Los Gatos Cham-

ber of Commerce hosted the event under the name “Fiesta de Artes.” Since then, the festival has grown tremendously. Rusty Reinehart, the current event director, shared with the Los Gatan that before the Kiwanis Club took over in 1996, the festival was a modest affair, with only 20 vendors set up in the small Old Town parking lot. Now, going by its new name, “The Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival” fills the entire Civic Center lawn.

This year’s festivities, set to take place on Sept. 21-22, promise to be bigger and better than ever before.

The festival will feature around 140 talented artists and craftsmen, along with a selection of fine wines and craft beers, live music and five food trucks. Plus, this year, attendees can look forward to some new exciting features.

One of the most significant changes is the transformation of the Los Gatos Public Library parking lot into the “Sustainable Living Zone.” This green space will feature booths from green sponsors like Cinnamon Energy, Farm Fresh To You, SYMBiHOM and Spare The Air. The area will be complete with a “smart home” ADU by Silicon Valley Clean Energy. Local Key Clubs and K-Kids clubs will also be hosting upcycling workshops to fundraise for charity.

This new addition to the festival aligns with the town’s growing focus on sustainability and environmental awareness.

“We want to be up to speed,” said Reinehart.

The festival will also host live music on the Civic Center stage, with four bands performing each day. Rock and soul cover band the Houserockers will continue their 25-year tradition of headlining.

While the event is free, the Kiwanis raise money through beer and wine sales, with proceeds directed back into the local community. They also receive a small percentage from California Artists, the agency that curates the list of craftspeople. These funds support various local initiatives, such as scholarships for Los Gatos High School students and the maintenance of community spaces like Never Neverland, located on LGHS’s campus.

Rinehart emphasizes that the festival’s ambiance is like no other.

CROWDS The Promenades were fan-favorite events, with droves of locals and visitors congregating on North Santa Cruz Avenue.

YOUNG FUNDRAISERS During last year’s Art & Wine Festival, Los Gatos Key Club members raised money for pediatric trauma programs.

“It’s a very local event where people can walk over and spend some time looking at all the artists, maybe sipping a cold beer or a fine glass of wine, and listen to some music on the lawn,” says Rinehart. “The town looks forward to our event every year.”

Rinehart and the Kiwanis Club hope that attendees will leave with a renewed sense of pride in being part of a community that supports the arts and gives back. Anyone interested in volunteering can visit the Kiwanis’ website (lgkiwanisgives.org) to sign up or learn more about how they can contribute.

According to Jennifer Lin, participating in local events like Taste of Los Gatos and the Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival is more than just a good time; it’s a crucial step in reconnecting with the social lifestyle that many have missed in the post-pandemic world.

“The fact that a lot of people are working hybrid means that fewer people stop by a store after work or stop by a happy hour,” said Lin. “(These events are) to make sure we’re giving folks a reason to always support local and to come and be a part of Los Gatos.”

The Chamber of Commerce and the Los Gatos Kiwanis Club are driven by the mission of encouraging locals and visitors alike to discover—or rediscover—being downtown. Organizers say by attending these festivals and similar community events, residents will help play a vital role in revitalizing their local economy and strengthening the bonds that define Los Gatos.

LET’S CREATE COMMUNITY BY PATRONIZING OUR FABULOUS LOS GATOS THEATRE

What I learned from radio and volunteering with local nonprofits

Lissa Kreisler, Contributor

According to Merriam-Webster, a “community” is a unified body of individuals with common interests living in a particular area.

My mother taught me as a kid that community was everything—and that you volunteered to make it better. Bill Weaver, my boss at KLOK-AM, my first job in radio right after college, pulled me aside one day to tell me his two “musts.” To dress nicely. And to become a community advocate.

In my four decades of sunny mornings on KLOK and then KBAY-FM, I took both very seriously. I dressed nicely, even if it was radio and you couldn’t see me; and I signed up to be

a volunteer—whether as a nonprofit advisor, an ambassador, a board member or an emcee at a community event.

My 40 years in radio are over, but my days of volunteering in the community will never end. And “my community” has extended over the last four-plus years to Los Gatos.

What I’ve learned about this wonderful town of Los Gatos is that the residents are friendly, engaged and kind.

I first saw that during the height of Covid. On my daily walks downtown, I frequently received a smile, wave, or a, “Good morning,” from other walkers. I interviewed more than 200 residents and merchants during my seven seasons at KCAT-TV and saw first-hand the love, support and goodness of the people in this community.

I joined the Rotary Club of Los Gatos and witnessed the giving and respect people here have for each

other with my own eyes. Now, as part of Los Gatos Thrives—which has as its mission “to make Los Gatos an age-friendly community for older adults to live engaged and meaningful lives”—I’ve yet again been impressed with the community cohesiveness and can-do attitude here.

On the first Monday of the month (except holidays), Los Gatos Thrives gathers residents at our fabulous, historic Los Gatos Theatre for a movie and good times. For $10 you get a seat, a coffee and a pastry from Teri Hope and Los Gatos Roasting Company (and some amazing fun). We’ve shown three movies so far.

Our next event will be held Oct. 7. The crowds have been large each time. It’s a unified body of individuals with common interests living in a particular area. People are laughing and hugging friends, happy to be together

for a common purpose. It is an amazing scene to watch. When leaving the movie, people say their goodbyes and make plans to gather again.

Los Gatos Thrives has created a new community. And one of the people who helped facilitate this, Paul Gunsky, the owner of Cinelux Theaters (which manages our beautiful Los Gatos Theatre), deserves to be recognized.

Paul and his son Chris have opened the venue’s doors to Los Gatos Thrives for free. This enables us to use the proceeds from the $10 ticket fee to cover expenses—and even make a bit of money for the organization’s future endeavors. Cinelux has become a big donor. Paul and Chris come in early to make popcorn, so the wonderful smell fills the lobby. They’re gracious hosts who’ve frequently been spotted greeting guests.

Have you been to the Los Gatos Theatre since they reopened under the Gunsky leadership? It was closed for several years. Many Los Gatans tried out and became accustomed to other nearby movie theaters. I hope you return to ours.

You walk inside and get that oldtime Hollywood feeling. Even walking past the ticket office on the outside makes you smile and feel great about entering. The ambiance is amazing. But more importantly, watching your movie at the Los Gatos Theatre is what community is all about.

Let's get together at the Los Gatos Theatre. It's more than just a movie at a theater; it’s a shared experience that strengthens the fabric of our community. By choosing to watch a movie there, you're not just enjoying a film— you're investing in the heart and soul of Los Gatos.

Fill those theater seats with laughter, tears and the warmth of shared moments. Create memories that bind us together. After all—as my mother taught me—community is everything.

Lissa Kreisler is a media host and community volunteer. She’s also the life partner of regular Los Gatan columnist Jeffrey P. Blum.

PURPOSEFUL The author says going to the Los Gatos Theatre can be about much more than just watching a movie.
