STEAMER’S WILL SERVE ITS FINAL DISH ON CHRISTMAS EVE

Seafood grillhouse has been a local fixture for 45 years

L aura N ess , Contributor

It’s time to bid adieu to Steamer’s Grillhouse, just named by the readers of the Los Gatan as Best Seafood Restaurant in Los Gatos for 2024, as well as the number two restaurant in town overall. After 45 years, the Matulich family is closing the beloved restaurant where locals have celebrated milestones over the decades.

Steamer’s started as a humble café on North Santa Cruz Avenue, then moved to a free-standing building in the original part of Old Town. It quickly became a magnet for lovers of fresh seafood and raw shellfish, and some tasty clam chowder. I remember eating there frequently in the late 1980s, before they relocated to their current spot on the other side of

University Avenue, in 1999.

Paul Matulich shared in an earlier interview that when the original café was demolished, it brought an emotional response from loyal customers.

“People came to me and said, I want table such-and-such, because that’s where I got engaged,” he said. “I had a guy buy my entire bar for his house. The emotional connection of people to the place was amazing. Now I have the kids and even grandkids of people who used to work here coming back to visit.”

When Matulich started Steamer’s in 1979 with his brother, Mark, and sister, Linda, he had just opened Courtside. At the time, his brother was working at a Sheraton in Hawaii. His sister was managing a tasting room outside Gilroy. He’d already been working with restaurant entrepreneurs to open legends like Sundance in Palo Alto, and he thought it would be good to have a business the siblings could

says that his family was involved in liquor distribution. “The year we opened, one of the Mondavis came by and said, ‘You should do a wine bar! It’s a new concept that’s BIG. Open a bunch of Italian wines and people will buy wine by the glass.’ At the time, people were still drinking things like Mateus and Lancers, and we were very successful with imports. In fact, we became the number one seller of Soave Bolla in California!”

The restaurant met with great success, in part because of its cocktails. They even had custom glassware blown in Mexico.

Pasta was a big part of tradition at Steamer’s and Matulich still has the same pasta machine from Italy he bought in 1982. He even went to San Francisco’s North Beach to take classes from Tony Gemignani of Tony’s Pizza Napoletana.

It’s time to get one last pie and order of seafood linguini, or whatever floated your boat at this cornerstone of Los Gatos.

While the town has changed over the years, the Matulich family has expressed that the sense of community and connection they felt never wavered. I know they are deeply honored to have been a part of it.

In a press release, sent out Sunday to their diners, they stated: “We want to thank you for your smiles, and your support. To our incredible staff, past and present—thank you for your dedication, passion, and for making Steamer’s the warm and welcoming place it has always been.

operate together. Ever since, his sister has been running the office and doing the accounting.

For Paul, cooking was his real passion, and one that required a commitment that is not easily found. “It requires a certain kind of mentality to want to put out the same beautifully plated dish over and over,” he once said. Matulich joked that his iconic menu items like linguini with prawns, mushrooms and crab in garlic lemon butter sauce, put his two kids through college.

The Matulich family grew up near Salinas. “My mother was Italian, right off the boat,” Matulich said. “She may have been born on the boat! My father was Croatian and a butcher, so he taught us all about meat, and we were surrounded by agriculture. We grew up cooking all our lives. We got to know all the produce farmers, Foxy Lettuce, all those guys. We all went to Palma High.”

In the early days of Steamer’s Café, he

“While this chapter is coming to a close, the memories we’ve shared will live on in our hearts forever. We are so proud to have been part of this community’s history, and we thank you for allowing us to serve you for 45 wonderful years. As we prepare to say goodbye, we invite you to join us in these final weeks to celebrate the legacy of Steamer’s. Together, let’s raise a toast to the memories, the milestones, and the incredible journey we’ve shared.”

Sad as it is, all good things do have to come to an end. Might as well grab one last margarita.

The restaurant will be open Wednesday through Sundays, until Christmas Eve, when the final meal will be served.

MOODY’S SAYS SCHOOL DISTRICT CAN KEEP ITS BOND RATING

A downgrade was considered, but agency noted USD’s improved financial performance

D rew P e NN er , Editor

As Union School District has managed to largely maintain its academic performance levels in the wake of the pandemic, it has also managed to right its financial ship, a ratings agency has confirmed.

On Nov. 25, Moody’s Ratings said it had abandoned an effort to potentially downgrade the District’s status in the bond market.

The K-8 district will get to keep its “Aa2 issuer” and “Aa1 GOULT” ratings, despite the investigation for devaluing its position, which had begun Oct. 1.

Moody’s said this change of course was down to “improved financial performance estimated for fiscal 2024 and stabilized enrollment...as well as consideration of unusually strong revenue and balances.”

USD, which is helmed by Superintendent Carrie Andrews, had a student body of 5,371 in 2023-24, according to ed-data.org.

The strong Silicon Valley economy “with robust resident income levels” is a major factor in the District’s Aa2 issuer rating, the agency said.

“High home values will continue to support favorable assessed valuation per capita, which equals $296,228 as of fiscal 2025,” it said in a release.

“While high home costs are a pressure on enrollment, a prior downward trend has notably stabilized in fiscal 2025 with expanded transitional kindergarten and an increase in interdistrict transfers.”

And while nearby private schools reduce USD’s “capture rate,” these are at full capacity and instead can be viewed as “a significant revenue stream, as tenants in district-owned properties provide roughly $9 million in unrestricted lease revenue annually,” it stated.

In the recent CAASPP math standardized tests for 2022-23, 54.45% of USD students exceeded expectations, with 19.52% meeting expectations, 13.97% nearly meeting expectations and 12.07% not close to meeting expectations.

In CAASPP English language arts/literacy (for 2022-23) 45.83% of students exceeded expectations, while 28.42% met expectations, 14.21% nearly met and 11.54% did not meet expectations.

That shows relatively steady performance when compared with the last tests taken pre-pandemic, in 2018-19.

The 2022-23 CAASPP math results at Los Gatos Union School District, 49.56% of students exceeded expectations, 24.43% met expectations, 17.12% nearly met expectations, and 8.89%

were not close to meeting expectations. And at LGUSD that year, in English Language Arts/Literacy, 47.5% exceeded expectations, 30.21% met expectations, 13.92% nearly met expectations and 8.37% were not close to meeting expectations.

In 2022-23, USD had $78,183,492 in total revenue, compared with LGUSD which had $56,066,601 in total revenue.

Moody’s said while USD’s general fund balance is “quite narrow” at just 3.9% as of fiscal 2023, it “has considerable balances outside the general fund in its lease sub-fund, special reserve for capital outlay, extended childcare fund

and self-insurance fund, which when combined equate to about 30% of general fund revenue.

“Revenue into these funds and the balances will remain available for district operations, with the district transferring lease revenue to the general fund annually,” Moody’s stated in a release. “The district also has a strong track record of voter approval for parcel tax measures, including 70.5% approval on the November 2024 ballot to increase its parcel tax from $96 to $148 for seven years, which will generate about $2 million annually in unrestricted revenue.”

AUTHOR OF PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER TO SIGN BOOKS AT BEYOND TEXT

Ellen Kirschman draws on experience as “Cop Doc” for her fiction

s taff r e P ort

On Dec. 7, at 2pm, Beyond Text Bookstore in Los Gatos will host a book signing with Ellen Kirschman, author of the newly released Call Me Carmela

This psychological thriller follows police therapist Dot Meyerhoff as she helps a young woman uncover her roots, while unearthing dark family secrets along the way.

Kirschman isn’t just writing from

imagination. She’s spent her career working closely with first responders, and draws on years of experience treating police officers and their families.

Known as the “Cop Doc,” she brings authenticity and insight to her fiction, blending sharp storytelling with her own fascinating experiences.

“I’m indebted to my clients and colleagues for inspiring me with their stories,” Kirschman said.

Her main character, Dot, shares some traits with the author, but is also quite different. Critics have called Dot a fearless—though deeply flawed—heroine.

“In her pursuit of justice, she does

things I would have lost my license for—like assault with a deadly weapon, impersonating a public official, and breaking and entering,” Ellen explained.

During the event, Kirschman will introduce her latest book, answer questions and share entertaining stories from her life and career.

"Fiction lets me take pot shots at nasty cops, unethical psychologists and even a few ex-husbands,” she said.

The event will take place at Beyond Text, at 318 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Los Gatos, on Dec. 7 at 2pm.

COP DOC In some ways, Ellen Kirschman is just like her heroine, Dot. But in other ways, they couldn’t be more different.

MEET YOUR MEAT’S BEST FRIENDS

Carnico will help you dry age, season and cook

L aura N ess , Contributor

Los Gatos now has a top-tier provisioner for those who love live-fire grilling. Carnico opened in the plaza across from Safeway in downtown, in the very spot that used to be Rose Cleaners. The shop is now filled with striking Mibrasa grills and ovens, all made of stainless steel in Spain, as well as the world’s most revered dry-aging refrigerators made by Dry Ager, a company in Bavaria, Germany.

Cookbooks from luminaries like Tyler Florence, Josiah Citron, Joshua Weissman and Paul Kahan, are prominently displayed on gleaming steel counters, and an abundant collection of grillware, also made by Mibrasa, are stacked on or hung from display racks. You can find everything you need here

for properly cooking all the recipes in “American Grill,” by Florence.

The owners, Jorge and Sarah Bianchi, are Los Gatos residents who live right down the street, and are raising their three children here. Sarah is herself a Los Gatos High graduate. She met Jorge, a native of San Sebastian, while spending a year abroad learning Spanish. The couple lived in Spain for a while before returning to Los Gatos. Their business is essentially representing top quality professional cooking equipment that is used by Michelin chefs the world over. The couple rattled off a list of Bay Area chefs, including Tyler Florence at Miller & Luxe and Corey Lee in San Francisco, and Johnny Black at Chez Noir in Carmel.

“Mibrasa is second generation, owned by three brothers, outside of Barcelona,” says Jorge. “This is the best equipment, top of class, durable and chef-driven. We brought them to

veggies in the proper pan, and in less than two and a half minutes for medium-rare steak, your meat is done.

Sarah adds that Mibrasa is making smaller, more compact units for home use. In fact, Carnico has a couple of gorgeous Mibrasa hibachi units. As small as they seem in comparison to the full-size ovens, I could not lift the thing. Solid steel, baby. “One trick we learned with this hibachi, is that you have to use far less charcoal, and you have to raise up the rack,” Jorge relates. “Otherwise, your shrimp will be toast!”

the US, to professional chefs, in 2018. Our goal now is to bring these grills and ovens to consumers who want to build the ultimate outdoor kitchens.”

The couple is developing videos and brochures to show builders, designers, architects and consumers the different options available for customizing the perfect live-fire cooking setup.

“We see an increased demand from diners who eat out at the best restaurants, who are ordering dry-aged meats, perhaps sitting at the chef’s table and watching the action. They are curious and want to try it themselves. We can help them create the perfect setup suited to their needs,” says Jorge. He demonstrated how one removes the racks in the Mibrasa oven, before dumping in the charcoal and lighting it. Once it has come to temperature, usually in 30 to 40 minutes, you use a special Mibrasa tool to redeploy the racks, then you place your meat or

Not only do they have exactly what you need to properly dry age, prepare and properly cook your meat over live fire, but they can also provide the most important part of the equation: the meat itself. Not a butcher shop or a deli, Carnico offers a nice selection of perfectly 30- and 60-day dry-aged Angus beef raised in Nebraska and prepared in New York City by Pat Le Frieda, whose cookbooks, “Meat” and “Glorious Beef” tempt you to bite into something juicy and umami. Their most popular steaks are the NY strips, and they offer ribeyes with and without bone. They also have pub burgers. All the beef is grass-fed and corn-finished, and you can buy all manner of seasonings as well as finishing sauces. Carnico also carries a gift-worthy selection of tinned seafood, which have become all the rage. You’ll find grilled pates, grilled fish and octopus in decorative tins bearing artwork that reveals the devilish side of Spanish humor. You can also take home sliced Beher Iberico ham from the famous dark hogs that feast only on acorns. If you really want to surprise the gourmand on your list, give them a can of duck confit, sourced from a company in Quebec.

If you’re curious about dry-aging, or wood-fire grilling, drop in and Sarah and Jorge will be happy to share their experiences and turn you on to a new way of looking at meat. They’ll explain the differences between wet and dry aging, and why the latter is superior, delivering a flavor experience sought after by connoisseurs and carnivores alike. And by the way, you can age game and pork, as well as beef, in the dry agers, which work by using a UV light device that automatically destroys pathogens in the air.

Carnico is located at #1, 501 N. Santa Cruz Ave. It’s open Monday through Friday, 11am-7pm, Saturday, 11am until 6pm. Closed Sunday.

NEW VENTURE Jorge and Sarah Bianchi opened a fire-grilling outfitter just down the street from their Los Gatos home. There you can buy books by cooks like Tyler Florence and Josiah Citron, and stock up on quality protein.

WILDCATS CAN’T KEEP UP WITH ST. FRANCIS

Football team falls in CCS finals, scoring just one touchdown

e ma N ue L L ee , Sports Editor

The Los Gatos High School football team was looking to become just the second public school in Central Coast Section history to beat three West Catholic Athletic League teams and win a playoff championship. It wasn’t meant to be.

After a pair of riveting wins over Serra High and Riordan High to open the postseason, the Wildcats finally met their match in a 27-7 loss to St. Francis High in the Division I championship game on Nov. 29 at San Jose City College.

Even though the season ended with a defeat, Los Gatos High coach Mark Krail will remember this group for their determination and ability to come through in clutch situations.

Beating two stalwart programs from the vaunted WCAL—arguably the best

semifinals en route to the championship contest. However, No. 2 seed St. Francis proved to be too tough, as it rode a power running game and rock-solid defense to victory. Los Gatos High didn’t execute well enough to win and any time it seemed to gain traction, it was undone by a penalty.

The most glaring example came when the Wildcats had a touchdown called back due to an ineligible man downfield on a screen pass midway through the fourth quarter. The flag-happy officiating crew issued 28 penalties—14 on each side—a somewhat alarming statistic for a championship game.

“St. Francis is a tough enough team and when you’re getting 15 penalties called against you, that just takes away from the rhythm of the game,” Krail said. “It’s just hard to get any flow and execute. Some of it was our doing, and I felt like some of it was … I don’t want to say too much. I don’t want to make excuses. They deserved to win. We felt like it was just a grind uphill the whole night.”

The Wildcats scored their lone touchdown on a Grayson Doslak 8-yard run with 1:18 left in the first quarter to make it 7-7. However, the Lancers reeled off 20 consecutive unanswered points to win going away.

The Los Gatos High receiving corps showed up in a big way, as Max Thomas (six receptions for 120 yards), Beau Musser (8-57), Owen Panu (5-57) and Cam Thomas (2-46) made acrobatic catches throughout.

Quarterback Scotty Brennan established career highs in completions (22) and yards (385). Although St. Francis connected on some big plays, Krail praised the Los Gatos defense for coming up with key stops and keeping the game within striking distance until the fourth quarter.

sports conference in Northern and Central California—is nothing short of spectacular.

“I’ll remember their resiliency,” Krail said. “I’m so lucky the kids we get to coach. This was a group that was closeknit, fought for each other and played the way you would want them to. Fine young men. That’s what I’m going to remember.”

The No. 5 seed Wildcats (10-3) edged No. 4 seed Serra 14-7 in the quarterfinals and No. 3 seed Riordan 35-28 in the

Wildcats senior Aydon Stefanopoulos finished fifth in the CIF State Championships’ boys Division II race at Woodward Park in Fresno on Nov. 30. Stefanopoulos was aiming to win back-to-back titles, having captured last year’s race in 14:58.4 at the 3.1mile course. While not establishing a personal record, Stefanopoulos ran a time that was 14th fastest overall among five divisions.

ADS A RIP-ROARIN’ GOOD TIME AT THIS YEAR’S TURKEY BOWL

Flag football event has 33rd edition on Thanksgiving

s taff r e P ort

This year‘s national Turkey Bowl flag football competition—33 years in the making—was deemed a major success by organizers.

Participants assembled at Creekside Sports Park in Los Gatos on Thanksgiving morning.

Three hard-fought games were held. Last year‘s winner, Blackhawks captain Joey Cope, failed to retain the coveted trophy.

Instead, it was the Red Riders and Yellow team advancing to the championship game.

That’s where the Yellow team—aka “the old men”—took it all.

Nick Corey, captain of the yellow team, presented the MVP trophy to Mason and the captain of the Red Riders.

VJ Rugnao presented the MVP trophy to Jayden Saadieh.

In the end it was the Yellow team that won this year’s Turkey Bowl.

“Congratulations to them,” said organizer Matt Ober, calling The National Turkey Bowl League the place where athletes are reborn once a year on Thanksgiving Day. “We wanted to thank our supporters The Alarm Company, Gardinos, Double D’s Sports Grill, Forbes Mill Steak House, Don Knight and Robin Sedgwick with Coldwell Banker, Epernay, Los Gatos Meats, F45 and Sorelle Italian Bistro.”
