EXPERT WARNS POPULAR PEST CONTROL METHOD IS ENDANGERING LOCAL WILDLIFE

Early vote count shows Monte Sereno councilmember in lead for Assembly seat

Raccoon rescue shows humane approach to uninvited animals

Liz Lawler jumped out to an early lead over Rob Rennie in the 28th Assembly District race, according to election results released at 9pm June 7. Lawler, a Monte Sereno city councilmember who is the lone Republican in the race against three Democrats, garnered 31.3% of the votes, while Rennie, the current mayor of Los Gatos, had 29.5%, early results show. Retired Santa Cruz County Clerk Gail Pellerin and union organizer Joe Thompson rounded out the race with 29% and 10% of the votes, respectively.

Drew Penner, Reporter

On Friday morning, Rebecca Dmytryk, CEO of Humane Wildlife Control, got sad news from Santa Cruz County officials. A cougar had been reported dead in the Santa Cruz Mountains near a creek, and they wondered if she could look into it. “I’m dealing with a dead mountain lion,” she told the Los Gatan, as she relayed the information to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife because it’s a protected species. “It was observed Wednesday afternoon.” While it was unclear what had killed the apex predator, Dmytryk said the vast majority of dead mountain lions test positive for poisonous chemicals. So, these days, she’s committed to educating the public about the harmful nature of substances—like rodenticide— to prevent the unnecessary deaths of forest dwellers. “I’ve been rescuing wildlife for over 40 years,” said Dmytryk, who is also the president of the Humane Wildlife Con➝ Wildlife, 16

Election, from page 1 The top two vote-getters in the primary election head to the general election in November. Lawler led Rennie by 629 votes, while Rennie was clinging to a 144-vote lead over thirdplace Pellerin. The newly redrawn Assembly District 28 includes Los Gatos and also covers north Santa Cruz County, Morgan Hill and southern San Jose. Lawler, a native of Los Angeles, moved to Monte Sereno with her family in 2013, and was elected to the city council in 2018, serving a year as mayor in 2020. She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from UC Berkeley. As the first results came trickling in on June 7, both Lawler and Rennie were in the middle of attending their respective council meetings. Rennie, who has worked for decades in the semiconductor and solar industries, has served on various boards before being elected to the Town Council in 2014, and previously served as mayor in 2018. Rennie holds a master’s degree in engineering from Dartmouth College, and has been living in Los Gatos since 1997.

In other races, Anna Eshoo appears headed to the November runoff in the redrawn 16th Congressional District, which includes Los Gatos, southwestern Santa Clara County, portions of San Jose and most of San Mateo County. The Democrat had secured 51% of the vote as of 9pm June 7, with fellow Democrat Rishi Kumar a distant second with 15% in the eight-candidate

race. Eshoo was first elected to Congress in 1992, and has remained in her seat since. Measure A, which limits Valley Water board members to no more than four consecutive four-year terms, garnered a majority of voters in support, at 54% in favor. The measure would extend the district’s current practice of three consecutive four-year terms for its board members.

• A bike was reported stolen in front of a store on Pollard Road.

Computer retailing pioneer Don Wolf died May 30 at the age of 92, after recovering from a bout of Covid-19 earlier in the month, family members announced. Wolf opened Idea Computer on N. Santa Cruz Avenue in downtown Los Gatos in 1982. It shortly thereafter became Wolf Computer, one of Silicon Valley’s leading computer retailers. Wolf Computer sold Digital Equipment Corp., Hewlett Packard and Apple Computer equipment. It closed in 1998 as big box stores embraced the increasingly commoditized home computer revolution. Prior to entering the retail business, Wolf worked in technical capacities with Bell Labs and AT&T, as a manager of Space Radar Engineering at General Electric in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and as a

designer of radar systems in Utica, New York. He served in the U.S. military and studied Physics Engineering and Military Science at the University of North Dakota. His hometown was Hazen, North Dakota. Wolf married his wife Anita on July 10, 1954. He moved to Monte Sereno in 2005 and described himself as a political conservative. In addition to his wife Anita, Wolf is survived by four daughters, Sandy Alzaidi, Jo Anne Schreiber, Jennifer Stuhlmiller and Julia Wood, son Tom and a good number of grandchildren, who include Charlys Yezo Silva, Samuel David Wood, Haydon Wolf, Adam Alzaidi, Joey Alzaidi, Peter James Stuhlmiller, Albert Scheiber III, Christopher Wood, Georgia Sue Schreiber, Zena Al, Ashley Scheiber, Sophia Alzaidi, Jordan Wolf, Christina Marie Urbano, Katie Wood Silva and Grace Wood.

Lung cancer attacks without a cigarette in sight

jun Ju ne e 8- 14, 14 , 2 0 22 2 2 : los losgatan.co gatan .co m

I walked out of a chemistry lab my freshman year of college, excited to call my family and update them on my newfound independence. What greeted me on the other line was not exciting news, however, it was news that crushed my soul. “Kaitlyn,” my grandmother said. “Pops has been diagnosed with lung cancer.” I didn’t believe her. My grandfather never smoked, so how could he have lung cancer? Only smokers get lung cancer...right? February 2022, as I am now a rising senior in college, the battle with cancer was lost, and my beloved grandfather passed away. His name was Dick Sparrer, and although you may not know him, you’ve likely read one of his many sports editorials or newspaper articles, as he was an editor for the Los Gatos Weekly for many years. This notion that only smokers get lung cancer is, in fact, entirely incorrect, and a crucial part of the Los Gatos community was plucked away because of a disease that could have been prevented. The Journal of Clinical Oncology estimates, in the United States, 140,000 deaths due to lung cancer, with approximately 17,000 to 26,000 annual deaths occurring due to never-smokers. Contrary to popular belief, this means that roughly 10-15% of all lung cancer deaths occur without smoking. While these lung cancer rates are seemingly decreasing, the prevalence of never-smoker lung cancer rates is actually increasing. Within the last decade, the Journal of the National Cancer Institute determined that the proportion of never-smoker lung cancer patients increased from 8.0% to 14.9%. The cause of this increase is widely unknown. You are at risk for the development of lung cancer, even if you’ve never touched a cigarette. The first never-smoker risk factor is age, as an increased age correlates with an increased likelihood of lifetime carcinogen exposure. The second major risk factor is secondhand smoke, as Missouri

COMMUNITY LEADER Dick Sparrer, a longtime local journalist, died in February.

Medicine concluded that 15-35% of lung cancer in non-smokers is due to secondhand smoke exposure. Further, environmental exposures to chemicals such as asbestos, chromium, and arsenic are linked to lung cancer development. Lastly, genetics is a risk factor as never-smokers and their families are more likely to retain a mutation in the gene EGFR, which is a growth factor receptor monitoring cell development. Therefore, if you are above the age of 60, have been exposed to considerable amounts of secondhand smoke, or know familial members with lung cancer, you may be at greater risk of lung cancer and should consider acquiring screening. While lung cancer takes the lives of thousands of people each year, there is still hope. Due to the unknown nature of lung cancer pathogenesis, catching this disease quickly and early is imperative. This is why one of the major interventions in lung cancer prevention is screening. Cancer Research UK discovered that 9 out of 10 lung cancer patients will survive for at least a year if diagnosed at the earliest stage, however, this rate drastically drops to 1 in 5 when lung cancer is

diagnosed at an advanced stage. It is obvious that screening is necessary as a primary lung cancer intervention, however, screening is currently not recommended or even offered for non-smoker patients. With never-smoker lung cancer diagnoses on the rise, why is screening still not recommended, given its success and effectiveness? Why are neglected patients faced with traumatic treatments? Why are thousands losing their lives when a prevention mechanism exists? This lack of screening recommendations combined with an absence of adequate research fails thousands of patients annually. In order to lower your risk of lung cancer, avoid secondhand smoke and other air pollution. Test your home for radon, especially in the winter when levels are higher. Watch for symptoms of lung cancer, including continuous coughing, chest pain, extreme fatigue, unknown weight loss, shortness of breath, and coughing up blood. If you have any of these or have a family history of lung cancer, please talk to a provider regarding lung cancer screening. A one-hour appointment could save your life. If you would like to push for further change, write to

This notion that only smokers get lung cancer is, in fact, entirely incorrect, and a crucial part of the Los Gatos community was plucked away because of a disease that could have been prevented. representatives at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, urging them to consider screening recommendations for never-smoker lung cancer patients. You have a right to a healthy life, free of lung cancer. Nobody should endure years of painful cancer treatments when a prevention method exists. My grandfather, Dick Sparrer, deserved more than the life he was given. The painful reality is that lung cancer is beginning its attack on never-smokers at an unprecedented rate. If you have symptoms, I urge you to please obtain screening for lung cancer. Diminish the notion that only smokers get lung cancer. Lastly, cherish the moments you have with those in your family and community. I thought my grandfather would be here today, helping me write this op-ed as the renowned journalist he was. Instead, I am writing with only my memories of him. This reality does not have to be yours—get screened and catch lung cancer early. Rest in Peace Dick Sparrer. 1949-2022. Kaitlyn Underhill is a junior at the University of Washington, majoring in Public Health. Her grandfather, Dick Sparrer, served 15 years as the Los Gatos Weekly-Times’ editor.

Recent LGHS grad to compete at D1 level

The bodies of elite gymnasts take a beating, and Reese Drotar has the battle scars to prove it. The recent Los Gatos High graduate and Level 10 gymnast has had four major surgeries in the last four years, three on her knee and the most recent on her shoulder. The injuries combined with Covid have limited Drotar’s competition time in the last couple of years, but that didn’t prevent Drotar from reaching her goals of competing for a premier Division I program. Last November, Drotar signed a letter of intent with the University of Arkansas. She is part of the nation’s third-ranked recruiting class for a program that will be a top-15 ranked team in the 2023 preseason rankings. “It was a huge moment and definitely surreal,” she said. “I felt like that was what I was working on and dreaming about for my whole life and for it to be finally happening and achieved was awesome.” Drotar initially committed to Cal in August 2020—another top-tier Division I program—before switching her commitment to Arkansas in April 2021. Overcoming injuries and making tough decisions in the recruiting process were some of the big reasons why Drotar felt every gamut of the emotional spectrum when she signed her letter of intent. A member of Airborne Gymnastics, Drotar achieved Level 10 status in 2018. She claimed the all-around title at the 2020 Pacific Classic with a score of 37.025. Drotar also won the bars event with a career-high score of 9.800, which put her on the nation’s top-100 list in 2020 on bars from My Meet Scores. The bars and beam are Drotar’s best events, and that’s where she’ll most likely make a contribution in

her freshman year for the Gymbacks. Drotar said competing in the national championships and qualifying for the Junior Olympics in 2018-2019 has been the highlight of her career so far. From an early age, when it was apparent her talent was exceptional, Drotar took part in the sport’s Elite Program which consists of regional and national training camps designed to give the gymnast maximum exposure in front of college coaches. By the end of Drotar’s freshman year, college coaches had her on their radar. Drotar said Gymbacks coach Jordyn Wieber liked her leadership abilities and ability to pick her teammates up even when things weren’t going well. “She said I always keep positive through everything, especially since I’ve been through a lot of injuries,” Drotar said. “And how I lead in other ways through my character and perseverance.” Gymnastics is equal parts sheer athleticism, technical refinement, artistry and elegance, and Drotar has worked diligently on all those aspects to incorporate in her gymnastics repertoire. Drotar also competed in several other sports growing up, but she decided to focus solely on gymnastics when she was in the fifth grade because she was already training 20 hours a week in the sport at that point. She upped her training to 25 hours per week a couple of years later and holds to that amount today. As a result of all those hours of training in such a physically demanding sport, Drotar’s body has taken a beating. Drotar has torn all the major ligaments in her left knee, along with a hamstring and calf. “Literally everything you can imagine, I’ve torn,” she said. While the most recent surgery was on her shoulder, it was the left knee that needed to be looked at by a renowned surgeon in Minnesota. Drotar’s parents, Shannon and Jason,

GYMBACK Recent Los Gatos High graduate Reese Drotar has signed with the University of Arkansas, and is part of the nation’s third-ranked recruiting class. have provided unflappable support throughout Reese’s career. “They definitely played a big part in all this,” Reese said. “My dad flew with me to Minnesota to find a surgeon who could get the treatment I needed. It was tough but I’m healthy again and working my way back. Now it’s just a matter of getting all my skills back.”

Drotar leaves for Arkansas later this month to get a jump start on training for her college career. The Gymbacks have a passionate fan base and averaged just under 5,000 per home meet last season. “I’m very excited of where I'm going and couldn imagine myself going anywhere else now,” she said.

PETE SEEGER FAMOUSLY ASKED, “Where have all the flowers gone?” This time of year, in our little town, one can’t help but wonder, where have all the summers gone? Has it really been three years since we sat together on a warm June evening to share a moment of friendship, community, and Jazz? It has. And for many of us it seems like a very long time. Jazz on the Plazz returns this year with a nod to an American icon... Dave Brubeck. An innovator, an activist, a teacher, and a force in Jazz like few others. What he brought to the table literally changed the genre and supplied a new rhythm to all our lives. His quartet’s recording of his friend, Paul Desmond’s, “Take Five,” became the best-selling jazz single of all time. This season we welcome his progeny in the form of the group, The Brubeck Brothers Quartet, along with a stellar lineup featuring both familiar and new names. All renowned artists at the very top of their games. I really don’t know what has seemed longer, the seventeen summers we were together or the past two that we’ve been apart. And what better way to come back than with a fresh voiced, East Coast Jazz Scene favorite… Svetlana and the Delancey Five. Thankfully, it’s once again time to celebrate that which is uniquely an American art form. So, masks off and smiles on... jazz is back. See you starting June 29th!

Having really enjoyed eating at Hero Ranch Kitchen restaurant in Saratoga several times, I was pleased to hear in September 2020 that the owner of this upscale eatery was planning to open another restaurant, this time in Los Gatos. According to the plans, Angelo Heropoulos, the owner of the restaurant and founder of Opa restaurant, who also owns Flowers restaurant in Saratoga, intended to include a rooftop bar with his new Los Gatos eating establishment. An elaborate posh looking outdoor area adjacent to the planned new restaurant was also in the works. Plans included more than 200 seats outdoors between the rooftop, the patio out back and the parklet on Gray's Lane. Inside, there would be seating for 100. It was an ambitious project, but one that seemed destined for success, given the owner’s past track record. Opening a new popular restaurant in downtown Los Gatos could be a sign that our town was slowly recovering from the horrors of the pandemic and being forward thinking; ready to do what is necessary to keep Los Gatos a great place to live and explore. The restaurant could potentially be a robust revenue generating source for our town; one more aligned with our family-oriented values than a cannabis dispensary would be. On my near-daily walks to downtown Los Gatos, I observed workers at the site of the old Williams Sonoma store where the new restaurant was to be housed, diligently working to ready the restaurant for a grand opening. The work progressed for many months. Then, the work ceased. This was puzzling and disheartening. Consistent with my goal of expanding community-based mediation in Los Gatos—a process that is underway—I envision an opportunity to bring the parties (ie. the town and the restaurant) back to the table, to see if the Hero Ranch Kitchen restaurant project in our town can be revived. Perhaps it

is my optimistic personality, which is a must to have if you are a mediator. Or it is my love of the farm to table eating concept. Regardless, I suggest that the parties talk with an experienced mediator, since having this restaurant in our town can be a win-win result for the restaurant and the town.

The work progressed for many months. Then, the work ceased. This was puzzling and disheartening. Given my position on the Community Health and Senior Services Commission in Los Gatos, I may not be able to mediate, but I can help, as can our community, by encouraging the parties to dialogue. I believe that there are no new projects yet arranged for the former Williams Sonoma space. Therefore, there is still time for a deal to be hammered out. This concept of mediation between the town and its merchants is yet another example of the possibilities community-based mediation offers for resolving difficult issues in town. Work in fact continues on the community-based mediation expansion project, focusing on restorative justice, parent-teen issues, and enlargement of the existing landlord tenant mediation program. More on this project will follow as we move toward making it a reality. In the meantime, perhaps a little encouragement from town residents can bring Hero Ranch Kitchen and the town back to the table resulting in a deal, so that we can all enjoy a great source of farm to table eating and the dynamism and revenue this restaurant may provide. Jeffrey P. Blum is a family law mediator who lives in Los Gatos.

PART OF A LARGER ECOSYSTEM Los Gatos Animal Emergency On the morning of May 24, Dmytryk noticed someone in Los Gatos had posted on social media about an animal emergency. The resident had closed a broken ventilation opening to their attic, after noticing a racoon exiting through the hole. But the woman didn’t know there was at least one raccoon baby still stuck inside. And as a result, the frantic mother raccoon decided to burrow towards her offspring. “She bored through plywood,” Dmytryk said. “I think of the desperation the mother racoon felt when she couldn’t get to her babies—so much so that she tore through a roof.” Unfortunately, the desperate creature got stuck halfway in, when its feet lost traction. Dmytryk says in the elevating temperatures, the furry mammal could suffer a type of heat-stress called exertional myopathy. “I desperately tried to get ahold of the owner,” she said. “I said, ‘You can’t delay. I’m an hour away. This animal doesn’t have an hour.’” Luckily, a nearby work crew was able to help expand the opening and free the lactating mother raccoon in time. The resident left the unintended-entryway open and set up a surveillance camera. It captured footage of the raccoon leaving with a baby in its mouth, the next day. “I’m grateful this turned out the way it did,” Dmytryk said. “It could have been much worse.” It’s important for homeowners to keep in mind that we’re part of a larger ecosystem, Dmytryk says. “We can absolutely live harmoniously with wildlife in rural areas,” she said. “We need to be good tenants. And we need to have tolerance for the other inhabitants.”

trol Association trade association. “I can’t tell you how many bobcats have almost died in my arms.” Todd Stosuy, field services manager with the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter, said he reached out to Dmytryk to handle the cougar case. “When we can have a partner like (Dmytryk) assist us in these wild animal calls, it really helps us focus on the domestic animals,” he said, noting they currently have two open positions at their office. “We are extremely short staffed here at the animal shelter.” Dmytryk says much of the public is unaware of how deadly rodent-control chemicals can be for cougars. “This is the new DDT,” she said. “If animals that were contaminated with rat poison were glowing, there would be incredible outcry from the public.” Dmytryk, who is based in Elkhorn Slough but works in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, practices a style of pest control where traps are set and rodents are caught—and then released—alive. “The animals aren’t the problem,” she said. “Their presence is a symptom.” Humans tend to move into a landscape and create an ecosystem that artificially attracts wild creatures, Dmytryk explains. “It’s our fault,” she said. “The good news is because the conflicts begin with our behavior, they can end with our behavior.” Patrick Foy, a captain with Fish and Wildlife, said two wildlife officers spoke with the original reporting party and searched for a dead mountain lion. Because they ultimately couldn’t locate a carcass, he couldn’t say whether this was a vehicle-strike, poaching or poisoning incident, but he confirmed rodenticide is a huge killer of big cats. Dmytryk tells clients that just putting out popular protein-flavored poison packages won’t solve the rat problem anyways, calling it a kind of dependency fostered by the traditional pest control industry. “They want to get people hooked on these drugs, because they know it doesn’t work,” she said. “They’re attracting the animals—rats, mice, ground squirrels—to the property.”
