SUPES APPROVE AGREEMENTS FOR WILDFIRE MANAGEMENT

Directors take roles as heads of various departments

Pilot program coming to Vasona Lake County Park

Drew Penner, Reporter

Back in February, Gitta Ungvari delivered the mid-year budget report—letting elected officials know how reclassifying Netflix to an e-commerce platform affected the Town's bottom line and pitching Council on a quarter-million-dollars in extra spending. "The Town must operate within its legally adopted budget," she said, commenting on the importance of fiscal responsibility, "—and administer department and budget control." Weeks later, the Town passed its $50.4 million financial plan. And now, Ungvari has been promoted to Interim Finance Manager. The human resources

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors approved a pair of agreements June 28 to protect and better manage fire-prone areas in county parks, according to Supervisor Joe Simitian. The first approved agreement is with the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council, which will provide forest health management services to the county through March 31, 2025. The Firesafe Council is a non-profit organization that provides education and project assistance for homeowners and landowners that are vulnerable to wildfire in Santa Clara County. The organization also works with Cal Fire, Santa Clara County Fire and other public agencies, businesses and private landowners to design and implement protective measures against wildfires. The agreement allows Santa Clara County to participate in the Los Gatos Watershed Forest Health Program, which was awarded a $7.5 million Cal Fire Forest Health Grant in 2021. ➝ Supes, 6

A Los Gatos nonprofit started by the family of a teenager who died unexpectedly has launched a partnership with the Campbell Union High School District to test the hearts of some students. On June 16, the District voted to require heart screenings for 9th and 11th grade athletes, a decision advocated for

by the Kyle J. Taylor Foundation, which is named for an 18-year-old who died of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). He attended CUHSD’s Leigh High School, in San Jose, but the organization started in his memory—which now works throughout California—is headquartered in Los Gatos. Taylor was a college freshman who enjoyed surfing and snowboarding, and cheered for the San Francisco Giants and the Golden State Warriors. On Feb. 22, 2018 he was found un-

conscious by a friend and was rushed to the hospital. He got to say “I love you mom,” two days later, before he died. According to the American Heart Association, a heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked, whereas a SCA is when the heart just stops beating all of a sudden. Taylor’s family dedicated themselves to raising awareness about SCA, which only has a 5-10% survival rate. The foundation awards scholarships and works to prevent SCA-caused deaths through free heart screenings and AED machine donations. The family of “Ky” (as he was known to his friends) decided working with educators could be an effective way to get the message out. After hearing from Jennifer Sarmento, Kyle’s mother, the CUHSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to incorporate heart testing into its athletics program. “Thank you, Jennifer, for coming tonight and for all of your work on this,” Board President Kalen Gallagher said, according to a release. “I didn’t know your son, but I knew students who knew your son—and they had such amazing things to say. “I am so impressed you’re taking this very awful situation and turning it into something so positive for so many students.” The foundation is now set to screen the hearts of all 9th and 11th grade CUHSD student athletes in the 2022-23 school year. To learn more about the organization to find information about upcoming screenings, visit kylejtaylor.org.

ESHOO: COMMUNITY IN LINE FOR MILLIONS OF DOLLARS Projects include Spooky Knoll Trail Project, Saratoga path Drew Penner, Reporter

Anna G. Eshoo, Los Gatos’ voice in the House of Representatives, said recently the community is in line for millions of dollars for local projects, after they made the cut as part of $21.4 million in federal funds that could be headed to the district. That included $400,000 to build the Spooky Knoll Trail Project in El Sereno Open Space Preserve near the Lexington Reservoir, connecting existing trails with a planned Highway 17 overpass.

There’s also $1.52 million for a pedestrian route from downtown Saratoga to Hakone Gardens—avoiding a perilous section of Highway 9. “I requested the Appropriations Committee fund 15 projects to provide more affordable housing, fix roads, build Caltrain crossings, improve our schools, and rebuild communities damaged by wildfire,” Eshoo said in a release. “I’m proud to announce that the Committee has included these projects in their appropriations bills which will be voted on by the full House.” Also in the works: $1.5 million for sidewalks and accessibility in Boulder Creek, $1 million for a “digital equity pilot program” to provide broadband

internet service for Los Gatos’ Lakeside Joint School District and Loma Prieta School District, and $644,000 for mental health screening for fifthand sixth-graders at Campbell Union School District. Plus, there’s $750,000 to replace the play structure at Skypark in Scotts Valley. Other district projects vying for federal cash are the Sure Stay Hotel transitional housing program ($740,000), the conversion of the 67-unit Crestview Hotel in Mountain View to supportive housing ($750,000), $8.5 million for Caltrain projects and $2 million to extend a bike lane in Half Moon Bay.

shuffle, announced July 7, also included Nicolle Burnham becoming Parks and Public Works Director and Wendy Wood being named Town Clerk. In a release, Town Manager Laurel Prevetti said she's excited to fill the leadership positions. "Each of these new directors brings unique skills, talents, and experiences which strengthen our Town team," she said. Recruiting firm Teri Black & Co. was in charge of the selection process. Prevetti said Ungvari has more than a decade-and-a-half of finance experience with the Town of Los Gatos, including leading work on Operating and Capital Budgets, overseeing payroll and managing business licensing She earned her Master of Business

Administration from the University of Massachusetts. Her appointment is effective immediately. Wood has worked in government for 12 years, including serving as City Clerk for the cities of Milpitas and Campbell. According to Prevetti, the Certified Municipal Clerk brings experience in agenda management, public records requests and administering elections. The Certified Municipal Clerk, who graduated from San Jose State University, starts July 21. Burnham has over 27 years of engineering experience in both the private and public sectors. Before coming to Los Gatos, she oversaw large park capital projects in the City of San Jose. She'll start her Los Gatos duties Aug 1.

FIVE-YEAR LEASE FOR PILOT

Supes, from page 1

The program was established to promote ecosystem resilience, mitigate the risk of catastrophic wildfire in the region, and protect drinking water reservoirs and sensitive nature and endemic species in southern Silicon Valley. With the money provided by the grant, the FireSafe Council will remove trees and dense brush on 290 acres of parkland in Sanborn and Upper Stevens Creek parks. “This is necessary, and comes at an opportune time—in the midst of yet another intense fire season,” said Simitian, whose District 5 includes the higher-risk wildland-urban interface stretching from Los Altos Hills in the north to San Jose's Almaden Valley in the south. “We know that regular maintenance of dense trees and brush goes a long way toward reducing severe wildfire risk and restoring healthy forest conditions.” The board also approved a five-year lease agreement with the Santa Clara County Central Fire Protection District for a 2,400-square-foot modular

building in Vasona Lake County Park, located in Los Gatos and part of the Santa Clara County Parks system. Central Fire will base its pilot pre-fire management and wildfire resilience program crew in the building, which was previously occupied by Parks and Recreation Department staff. Instead of paying rent on the building, Central Fire has the option to provide training to park staff and perform fuel reduction activities at Vasona and other county parks, including removing hazardous fuels from around structures. The approved agreement comes with two five-year extension options. “This is a win-win for Parks and Central Fire, and also for the surrounding communities around our County parks," Simitian said. "It will give Central Fire a presence at Vasona, and we get some use out of a building that had been sitting empty but will now be used for a program that makes our communities safer." ‘Sound of Music’ and ‘Freaky Friday’ on the summer schedule

This July, Los Gatos Youth Theatre (LGYT) is bringing “Sound of Music” and “Freaky Friday” back to life. The 13-year-old non-profit is fast approaching its summer performances with Artistic Director Heather Stokes at the helm. LGYT’s Encore group started rehearsing for “Freaky Friday,” a Disney classic, in May. The show embraces contemporary music and a quirky plot involving a body switch between mother-daughter duo Katherine and Ellie Blake. The pair try to make it through “Just One Day” of each other’s lives, failing to avoid any catastrophic disasters in the process. While they struggle to communicate at the start of the show, Ellie and Katherine learn to understand each other by the end, making “Freaky Friday” a wholesome and relatable story. The theater company’s older performers, aged 14-19, have embodied the modern musical to prepare for their shows: July 21 at 7pm, July 22 at 7pm, July 23 at 2pm and 7pm, and July 24 at noon and 5pm. Senior Riya Narain, who plays Katherine Blake in the Kitt cast, has acted in countless musicals, but feels that LGYT productions are special because of their unique ability to bring people together. Narain emphasized that “it’s wonderful to perform with people who are genuinely dedicated to theater, just like I am.” This summer’s Reprise production is the youth edition of the tried and true “Sound of Music,” featuring actors of ages 7-14. The show tells the story of the Von Trapp family and their postulant governess, who welcomes music back into their lives. LGYT’s younger performers are beyond excited to step onto the stage in July. Eight-year-old Makenna Saban, who plays Marta Von Trapp, is ready for her LGYT debut this summer. Saban shared that her favorite part of LGYT shows is “being on stage and performing.” She is thrilled about her role in “Sound of Music” because she “gets to hang out with friends and

Set just before World War II, the Sound of Music features iconic songs such as “Do-Re-Mi” and “Sixteen Going on Seventeen.” Performances are July 14 at 7pm, July 15 at 7pm, July 16 at 2pm and 7pm, and close on July 17 at 1pm. For any student looking to join the ranks of LGYT, the summer shows are a great way to make new friends and find a welcoming group. Encore performer Esme Jacques shared that “LGYT really represents community and teamwork” to her. Under the watchful eye of the artistic staff, thespians learn public speaking skills, flexibility, collaboration and gather experience for any future theater or life endeavors. Youth performers can also try their hand at the company’s summer camps, which allow actors to hone their dancing, acting and singing skills, with a shorter time commitment of just a few weeks. LGYT’s summer camps let kids try out the theater scene

and performing arts in an inclusive, playful environment. This year’s day camp put on “Disney’s Descendants the Musical,” a show with an invigorating soundtrack and entertaining characters. The camp featured LGYT’s younger actors, ages 7-14. Los Gatos Youth Theatre betters its members in indescribable ways, helping students find a community to be a part of and enabling them to be more independent and resourceful in their daily lives. You can find tickets for the summer productions and audition information on the LGYT website, lgyt. net, or by emailing marketing@lgyt. net. A NEW SKIPPER COMES TO TOWN Minkel takes over as Los Gatos baseball coach

After a five-year run as an assistant baseball coach at Saratoga High from 2011-2015, Mike Minkel knew he wanted to run his own team as an on-campus teacher. The 39-year-old achieved his goal when he was recently named the new Los Gatos High baseball coach. He takes over a proud program with a winning tradition and several varsity returners from the 2022 squad. “It’s a great opportunity here at Los Gatos,” said Minkel, who is a special education teacher at the school. “I’ve been here four years now, and each year keeps getting better in terms

of support from the administration, support from the community, support from the parents. It’s very similar to what I experienced when I started in the district at Saratoga High.” In addition to assistant coaching stints at Saratoga High and his alma mater, Cumberland University, Minkel served in that same role the last two years at Valley Christian, the section’s premier program. Minkel said he’s most excited about being an on-campus coach, because it will allow him to build relationships with the players on a more personal level and spend additional time with them. “Being on campus allows deeper connections and relationships with players, families and the community,” he said. “That’s the thing I’m most

looking forward to, is pouring more into these players and taking these relationships and developing them further from both a baseball and life perspective.” Minkel was born and raised in San Jose and graduated from Leland High in 2000. From there, he played two years at Mission College before transferring to play at Cumberland, a NAIA program in Tennessee. Minkel thoroughly enjoyed his time at Cumberland, and that experience made him realize there were plenty of opportunities to play college baseball besides the Division I level. “There are many places for kids to keep playing beyond their high school years if that is what they want to do and are dedicated to doing,” he said. After his stint at Saratoga, Minkel

went back to school to earn his teaching credential. By that point, Minkel knew he wanted to lead a program and be on campus to do it. “I’m really excited to get started with all the guys we’ve got returning,” he said. “I’m excited to see what we can do. Coach (Justin) Oliver and coach (Nate) Anderson before him, they did a great job with the program in terms of everything that comes with it. I’m just looking to continue that momentum and what has been established before me and spend more time with these guys.” Since baseball practice doesn’t start until February, Minkel said he’ll enjoy going to all of the Los Gatos High football games in the fall. “Watching the Friday Night Lights is a big thing for my family,” he said. “I’m fortunate to be married to a woman who enjoys going to football games, so we’ll be there for every home game at least.”

PARADISE LOST

12

It’s a typical Sunday afternoon in July 1906. As you and a friend stroll across the new Main Street bridge, you stop to admire the view. Below you, just to the South of the bridge, the Los Gatos creek meanders past Bunker Hill Park where people are enjoying a day of band concerts, fishing and picnics under the shade of towering sycamore and oak trees. There’s a large outdoor dance pavilion which is also used for roller skating. The creek runs freely without an upstream dam to restrict the flow, so fishing is especially popular. Speckled trout are so plentiful that you can almost reach down and catch one in your bare hands! Boys wade up the creek to the “boogang,” their not-sosecret swimming hole. It’s a peaceful scene, and you’re delighted that Los Gatos built its first municipal park on this idyllic site. The graceful double-arched concrete and stone bridge on which you’re standing replaced a wooden span which was vulnerable to winter floods. The town is justifiably proud of its beautiful new bridge which is often featured in paintings, sketches, photographs and postcards like the one shown above. Although the bridge sustained minimal damage in the April 1906 San Francisco earthquake, a special dedication ceremony and barbecue planned for May 1 was canceled for safety reasons. Bunker Hill Park, built on land donated by Los Gatos pioneer William C. Shore (1830-1905), was dedicated in memory of the Americans who perished in that Revolutionary War battle. Thousands reportedly attended a special inaugural ceremony for the park on June 17, 1897, the 122nd anniversary of the famous battle. Someone even shipped a pail of earth from the battlefield so that it could

The popular park was enlarged and renamed Memorial Park after WWI to honor all war dead. In 1927, the town added a large public swimming pool called the Municipal Plunge where you could rent a bathing suit and a towel for 25 cents. In their wildest dreams, no one in the park on that summer day could have imagined that only a few decades later—in the name of progress—the bridge would be dynamited, the park and all its trees bulldozed, and the creek confined to a concrete channel in order to make room for what we now know as Highway 17. The only clue that a park formerly existed on this site is a dead-end street called Park Avenue which once led from Main Street to the park’s main entrance. The uproar from townspeople over what they had lost prompted Los

After they paved paradise, the town chose the site of its recently closed municipal landfill and sewer farm for the new Oak Meadow Park which opened in 1957.

For more than 25 years, the Town of Los Gatos has been providing grant opportunities to fund projects and services that support or benefit the community of Los Gatos. The Town is continuing this tradition and opened competitive grant applications for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Non-profit organizations that serve the Los Gatos community are invited to apply for up to $7,500 to support the creation of a new program or service that will benefit the community. The Town plans to award 10 grants this year for a total of $75,000. The deadline for applications is July 22. An additional $70,000 of Sustaining Grant funding will be available to five non-profit human service organizations that have met preexisting qualifications to sustain existing services. Finally, Los Gatos residents, groups of Los Gatos neighbors, or students attending a Los Gatos school can apply for one of four Innovation Grants of $1,500 each to assist in jumpstarting a grassroots idea that would benefit schools, neighborhoods or the community in general. The deadline for Innovation Grant applications is Aug. 31. Applications can be found at l o s g a t o s c a . g o v/ 3 1 8 / C o m m u n i ty-Grant-Programs. COUNTY FUNDING SUPPORTS DEVELOPMENT OF 21ST CENTURY JOB SKILLS The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors recently approved a onetime grant to the Metropolitan Education District (MetroED) to establish two new Career Technical Education (CTE) programs—one to support the growing demand for health care workers in Santa Clara County, and another to address the growing demand for service in the electric vehicle market. With the County’s support, MetroED will develop a new nursing science program focused on preparing stu-

The county recently provided grant funding to allow the program to offer a curriculum on electric vehicles. dents to work in long-term care facilities, hospitals, home health and other patient care facilities. MetroED will also move forward with the conversion of an existing traditional automotive services program into one focused on electric vehicles—a program designed to prepare future automotive technicians to work on both types of vehicles. “We know we have a critical nursing shortage, and we know electric vehicles are a rapidly growing share of the automotive market. So investing in these two programs provides a great return on investment,” said County Supervisor Joe Simitian, who sponsored funding for the programs. “By focusing on these fields, MetroED

is creating a pipeline to 21st century jobs. It’s good for the students and it’s good for our local economy.” The largest career-oriented education organization in Santa Clara County for high school and adult students, MetroED’s Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE) program provides career technical education for high school students (and adult students, on a space-available basis) from a half dozen local school districts: Campbell Union High School District; East Side Union High School District; Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District; Milpitas Unified School District; San Jose Unified School District; and Santa Clara

Unified School District. MetroED currently serves 1,100 students. The County’s support enables MetroED to hire an instructor and purchase essential equipment, such as diagnostic sets and blood pressure simulators, for a new nursing science course. This academically rigorous program will enable students to complete college preparatory courses in partnership with local community colleges as a “guided pathways” course and pipeline to Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), and Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) courses. This coursework is designed to motivate students to pursue further professional nursing paths beyond a two-year degree, including obtaining an RN, BSN, MSN, DNP and PhD. “On behalf of the MetroED Governing Board, we are honored by the support and interest from the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors in our Career Technical Education programs. It will make a real difference in the lives of so many students throughout our county,” said Katherine Tseng, a member of the MetroED Governing Board and the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District school board. “Our County leaders truly understand the value of our programs in providing essential workers for our local community.” The County funding also enables MetroED to convert its traditional Automotive Services program into a modern and updated electrical vehicle (EV) program. Funds will be used to develop a curriculum in self-driving vehicles, EV powertrain conversions, and computerized e-learning of future technology, including electric bicycles. Funding will also support the conversion of a new classroom where students will have an opportunity to build electric vehicles. "MetroED is beyond grateful for the County’s investment in our programs and students,” said Alyssa Lynch, superintendent of MetroED. “The County’s support will help us grow our local nursing workforce and create a much-needed pipeline of technicians trained in electric vehicle technology to help our local businesses.” Simitian called MetroED, “One of our county’s best-kept secrets in job training and economic development.”
