Coach Jeff Alzina comes full circle Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor Jeff Alzina has come full circle. After 25 years living in Southern California, the alltime winningest coach in AVP history returned home to San ta Cruz in February 2019 to become the head coach of the Santa Clara University beach volleyball program. Then, just three months ago, Alzina teamed up with Los Gatos resident and Director Courtney Burry to launch the Mandala Beach Volleyball club. Mandala holds practices at West Valley College in Saratoga and Main Beach in Santa Cruz, and will add practices at Northgate High in Walnut Creek by October. For the 54-year-old Alzina, becoming the head coach of a club volleyball program repre sented a unique opportunity and challenge with a deeper meaning.“I’vegot a 7-year-old daugh ter and really strong roots to the Santa Cruz area, so the whole idea of building something from scratch was something extremely attractive to me,” said Alzina, a fifth generation Santa Cruzan. “I’ve thought about do ing a club (again) for close to 15 years. The time was right for it.” Volleyball, 10

The County of Santa Clara Vector Control District is seeing an increase in West Nile virus-infected mosqui toes this summer, and the District encourages residents to remove sources of standing water and report mosquito activity in their neighbor hoods to protect themselves and their community.TheCalifornia Department of Pub lic Health considers WNV the most

common and serious vector-borne disease in the state, causing more than 7,000 human infections and nearly 400 deaths since 2003, when it was first detected in California. There have been 18 human cases of West Nile virus in the state this year and, so far, none in Santa Clara County. Most people infected with WNV do not develop symptoms, while some may develop mild flu-like symptoms. People with compromised immune systems and the elderly are at higher risk of severe symptoms and even death. The District has conducted six adult mosquito control treatments so far this year, up from three in 2021. The treatments are administered us ing truck-mounted machines that emit an ultra-low volume (ULV) mist containing small amounts of U.S. En vironmental Protection Agency-ap proved insecticides. The treatments are safe for people, pets and animals, according to the District. County residents can help reduce mosquito breeding on their prop erty by removing sources of stand ing water. According to Kelley, this was due to a couple minor elements.

“It’s just wording issues,” she said. “It’s like, oh yeah, hurry up and wait. It’s a nightmare.”Theywere asked to remove some notes from the plan set and add details on the page about how the battery will be mounted, Kelley said. “And that’s it,” she said. “I’ve been told that it’s a snowflake process from every single person in Santa Clara County.” The County did not reply to a request for comment about the case as of press time.

She’s signed up for the Reverse 911 program that lets people know when to evacuate if wildfires threaten their safety. But she worries those alerts might not be able to come through if the power goes down; she believes it would be even harder for an older resident who strug gles with Luckily, technology.Kelleyand her husband are able to afford a two-battery set-up for their solar array.

“We’re hanging two batteries on the wall with an inverter,” she said. “It’s not complicated.”They’dbeen hoping to have the lithi um-ion cells up-and-running in time for August. But around Aug. 5, the installa tion company—which submitted the per mit application—still hadn’t heard back.

For rural residents like Kelley and her husband, when an outage occurs, their ability to know what’s going on during an outage becomes greatly reduced. That’s because when a blackout hap pens, they lose internet. The wired ser vice provided by Frontier Communica tions is so slow in their area that they switched to getting data through Ridge Wireless, she said. While the tower is on a back-up gen erator, there’s a lag before the company is able to fire it up, she added.

The Los Gatos resident, who is located in Santa Clara County, is used to han dling a few outages here and there—and the occasional falling tree limb causing wires to snap.

And the cellphone infrastructure they dial into does have a day or so of battery backup, but with recent outages lasting multiple days, Kelley says that’s cutting it too close for comfort.

RESIDENT: SLUGGISH PERMIT PROCESS DELAYS MITIGATIONWILDFIRE-PLAN

But since Pacific Gas & Electric Co. began requiring eyes on the entire affected line before powering back up, and due to the utility’s recently implemented strategy of cutting electricity to areas it predicts could be in danger of wildfires sparking, Kelley and her husband decided it was time to purchase a backup-battery system.

“They knew it was in structural review but it had been there for a long time,” she said. “The vendor asked me to check on theThispermit.”was strange for Kelley, since a woman across the street—just over the Santa Cruz County line—didn’t face the same issue when applying for a similar permit.

“My neighbor got hers in less than two weeks,” she said. “There’s something wrong with our Building Department, like they need to hire more staff or something.”

They settled on a Tesla Powerwall, 2022’s most requested home energy storage device according to Energy Sage. But that’s when their difficulties started, as they went to the County’s Department of Planning and Development on June 1 to get the rubber stamp to install them.

And when her parents added a porch, and had to go through the Town of Los Ga tos’ process, they got the thumbs up for en tire architectural plans within two weeks. That’s why she can’t understand what’s happening at the County.

“There’s none on the landlines either,” she said, when asked if there are other backup systems in-place in her area.

Drew Penner, Reporter Heather Kelley counted 15 days the power was out last August, up at her place that’s perched atop the Santa Cruz Mountains along Skyline Boulevard.

“There’s something not right,” she said. “I’m not mad. I’m not playing a blame game. I’m just wondering why simple things are taking such a long time.” Kelley decided to contact Supervisor Joe Simitian’s office about her Power wallThepermit.staffer she dealt with was quite responsive, she explained.

“She emailed me back, and miracu lously my permit came out of structural review that afternoon,” Kelley said, add ing her vendor still had to wait for access. “It took about a week longer to update theWhensystem.”they could see the status, it indi cated they needed to resubmit the permit.

“It makes our life just a living hell up here,” she said. “It’s absolutely terrifying.” Kelley says it’s not just the inconve nience of being in the dark.

“He never missed anything,” she said. “I was into model rockets in middle school and we participated in a national competition. He came to every workshop and launch we had. And he was at every single football game my brother ever had. It was his magic—he didn’t let the stress of his job leak into our family. When he was present with us he was wholly present.”McNeil also coached his children’s soccer and volleyball teams. His long-time best friend Gary Lord said, “When I think through some of my favorite things about Doug, there’s so many that come to mind. Certainly his sense of humor, always finding levity no matter what the situation was. Throughout Doug’s illness that didn’t change. He was al ways looking for ways to make it eas ier for all of us to cope and help him cope by introducing humor into the situation. And then his strong sense of loyalty to family and friends and extended family and friends—that’s just always been a big part of who heFellowwas.”

Despite his community involve ment and business success, McNeil was always there for his family, his daughter Jessica Eastland said.

The ALS Association estimates it costs $200,000 annually to sustain an ALS patient, so McNeil’s lengthy illness was financially difficult for his family. That’s why the family is accepting do nations at doug-mcneil-fight-against-als.gofundme.com/f/mnyra3ABOVE SELF’ from page 1

“The amazing thing about this or ganization and the brainstorm of what Doug and (the late) Jesse Salem drew on a Starbucks napkin back in 2012 is that the benefits of LFL are full circle. The youth and families involved in the builds utilize their skills to learn about solar power,” said Lighting for Liter acy co-president Christina Roberts Enneking.LFLisco-sponsored by the Los Ga tos Methodist Church and Los Gatos Morning Rotary. In mid-April 2012, McNeil and a group of volunteers traveled to Punta Colonet, Mexico, where they installed 10 LED lights. By 2019, the lights had been installed in 23 countries, as well as Puerto Rico and Colorado’s Navajo nation.Aonce-in-a-lifetime moment came in 2013, when McNeil led a group of LFL volunteers to the White House, where they were honored as “Champi ons for Change.” “He embodied service above self, and his energy and joy were infec tious,” LFL volunteer Dr. Peter Taylor said. “The whole world is a better place in so many ways because Doug lived the remarkable life that he did.”

Several people remarked about McNeil’s kindness, one quoting him as saying, “It’s better to be kind than right.”McNeil’s family is planning an unconventional Celebration of Life for Oct. 8 at Coyote Point Recreation Area in San Mateo. “Every year we participate in the Silicon Valley Walk to Defeat ALS, so we’re trying to get as many par ticipants as we can,” Eastland said. “After the walk, we’ll have a Celebra tion of Life in the picnic area. Describing it as his “first real volley ball salaried position,” Alzina moved to Athens for three years to prepare a Greece team to qualify for the 2004 Olympic“Initially,Games.itwas a seven-year plan, but we were able to get two really tal ented indoor players from the indoor national team who were playing beach part-time and convinced the Federa tion to pull them away and give them the same salary, but play beach fulltime starting in 1999. Within a year, we trained so hard and they got so good they qualified into the (2000) Sydney Olympic Games. I think there were less than 10 people coaching in the world in beach volleyball at the time, and so no, I never had any aspirations whatsoever (of making a living off it).

Mandala has already had a number of its teams compete in Junior Nationals and notable AVP and AAU tournaments. Sev eral of the teams won medals, especially at the 16U and 12U level. Top players include Amelia Vugrincic, a 2022 Palo Alto High graduate who has a scholarship to play at Cal, and Emma Donley, a senior at Menlo School who is committed there.

Alzina chose Mandala for the club name because it’s a Sanskrit word that means circle. Symbolically, it’s used to represent the universe, and more spe cifically a balanced universe.

“So basically beach volleyball is the center of our universe—that’s the idea,” he said. Alzina has come full circle, back home where it all started.

“Beach volleyball is the fastest grow ing NCAA sport,” Alzina said. “It’s rapidly growing all over the nation. Florida, Texas, Arizona and Southern California have been way ahead of the curve and for some reason Northern California has been about three to four years behind those other regions. But we’re hoping this is an area where we can create a ton of growth and a ton of opportunities because there are a lot of great players and interest up here.” That’s one of the reasons that got the 54-year-old Burry to launch Mandala.

“This started as a way to give girls an outlet during Covid, but has mor phed into something more,” she said. “We’re seeing really great traction, and it’s exciting to see the interest in beach volleyball taking off. But there’s always a little bit of if you build it, will they come? You’re doing something for the first time and so you’re figuring it out as you go.”

Athletes from beginner to advanced are drawn to a person with Alzina’s pedigree. He has coached 25 years across the club, college, professional and Olympic levels. Save for leading a team to an Olympic gold medal, the UC Santa Barbara alum has pretty much accomplished everything in the sport.

“There’s so many great players and so many great athletes with families that are interested in it that this is the area that makes the most sense to grow the sport,” he said. “One of our big goals is not just to grow the sport, but to show the Bay Area that playing beach volleyball year-round and making a commitment to becoming an NCAA player is a viable option. The majority of players in this area still play other sports through high school, and so hopefully we’re going to create enough support and quality that players realize they don’t have to keep chasing this collegiate indoor dream.”

Burry and Alzina met in February and launched Mandala in just three months. Burry said the club has en rolled 100 girls across the 10-18 age level, and she expects that number to grow as word gets out.

With no previous experience run ning a sports club, Burry turned out to be a quick study.

Alzina got his first big break in 1998 from Sinjin Smith, one of the greatest beach volleyball players of all time. Beach volleyball had just become an Olympic sport in 1996, but was still in its infancy from an overall op erational standpoint.

“The Hindus and Buddhists have grabbed it and ran with it for thousands of years as a symbol of when things in your larger world are balanced,” Alzina said. “I’ve done a lot of studying on how to balance yourself with all of the things in your head and your life, and have always enjoyed that concept of being a healthy, balanced person.” A volleyball is the center of Manda la’s club logo.

“I just knew there was a position someone wanted to create and I had dedicated probably the 15 years pri or to playing and understanding the game and helping people run practice and get better at things in an informal fashion. When someone was going to say, ‘Hey, this is going to be a paid po sition and you’ll travel the world and we’re going to give you all the support you can imagine to become better at this profession,’ it was a total no-brain er. That just set everything in motion.”

A senior vice president of product and corporate marketing, Burry’s daughter, Sydney Morey, a sophomore at Los Gatos High, recently decided to take up the beach game full time. Burry’s path into becoming Mandala’s club director began with a push to give girls an outlet during a turbulent time. When things were still shut down due to Covid in the final months of 2020, Burry organized tournaments to give girls in the area an opportunity to keep on playing. From that, she received a lot of posi tive“Afeedback.lotofthe players’ moms came to me and said I should do a club because there wasn’t a club down here in the South Bay,” Burry said. “I was intro duced to Jeff and he was looking to give back to the community as well, so we decided it would be a kind of labor of love for both of us.”

MANDALA

Girls beach volleyball is in its initial season as a California Interscholas tic Federation (CIF)-sanctioned sport. Los Gatos High is offering up the sport in the spring of 2023.

LEADER Jeff Alzina is the head coach of the beach volleyball programs at Santa Clara University and Los Gatos-based Mandala. Alzina, 54, has 25 years of coaching experience, most at the pro level.

“You learn things as you go, like how to structure the classes,” she said. “The moms are really vocal (laughs) about telling us what they think, what they like and what they want to see, which is great. Jeff and I both have different experiences. I have more of the business side which is nice because I’m really organized and I can do all the management side of things. And he’s got the amazing coaching experience.”

“The legendary Sinjin Smith really did me a big favor in 1998 when I let him know that I heard the Greek Vol leyball Federation was searching for someone after they earned the (2004) Olympic Games in 1997,” Alzina said. “There were only a handful of people even coaching beach volleyball then, and I wasn’t one of them. But I had a relationship with Sinjin and his partner at the time who was my room mate and convinced them that I knew enough about the game that I could basically help create the position and the profession of coaching players and develop talent year-round.”

Alzina pointed to the paucity of beach volleyball clubs, the sport’s rise in popularity and the rich talent in the Bay Area as reasons why this was the perfect time to go all in.

Alzina has been a national team coach for eight different countries, and enjoyed a highly successful eight-year run with former pro Stein Metzger.

Koret said Amburgey and Schubert—along with a handful of other players on the team—take only a couple of weeks off throughout the year from water polo and swimming competition. Sullivan’s indefatigable work ethic has led to a dramatic im provement in his game.

“This is the strongest team we’ve had and the most experienced group in the past six years,” Koret said. “It’s good to hope and set some expecta tions. Obviously, our No. 1 expectation is making CCS, but the main goal is making it to the Open Division, which means we win our league.”

“Our incoming freshmen play above their age level, so that’s going to be ex citing to see what they do,” Koret said.

“Jake doesn’t have the physical abil ity of some goalies, but his work ethic is amazing,” Koret said. “He’s overper forming—not just every game—but every practice. His mindset is so clear and his goal so straightforward that you just tell him whatever you need and he’s going to do it. We’ll definitely expect him to not only perform, but to lead a little more now that he’s a senior because goalies are usually the leaders in the Onepool.”thing the team has this sea son that they haven’t had in the past is depth. Seniors Blake Lennan and Brenden Jones, who saw some playing time last year, figure to have a greater impact this season.

Cannon enters his third season as the team’s No. 1 goalie after a strong summer playing for his club team.

Schubert, a returning first-team, allleague attacker/utility, has committed to play for Division I program Navy. Earlier this summer, Schubert played for the West Valley water polo 18U club team that finished in the top 15 in the ultra-competitive Junior Olympics.

Lars plays good defense, is a great out side shooter and can post up. Pretty much every single play offensively and defensively runs through him.”

Koret is cautiously optimistic that Los Gatos can make history this season.

Wildcats aim for De Anza Division title Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor When Davor Koret took over as head coach of the Los Gatos High boys water polo team six years ago, his biggest goal for the program was to rise in the ranks and win the Santa Clara Valley League De Anza Division championship and with that a berth into the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. As far as he knows, the Wildcats have never won an A division title.

202224-30,August:losgatan.com 11 SPORTS LOS GATOS BOYS LOOK TO MAKE HISTORY

“Connor is the one who has im proved the most from August of 2021 to August of this year,” Koret said. “He’s improved a ton, so there will be a little more weight that is going to be put on him. We’ll definitely rely and expect more of him. He finally grew up a little bit and got a little more mature, and now he’s taking this pretty seri ously. It’s a joy to watch him play.”

“Realistically, we think we can if ev erybody stays healthy,” he said. “These boys are very coachable, they’re behav ing well, they’re doing good in school, so we’re hoping for the best. You al ways want to dream and then go after yourThedream.”Wildcats return some key play ers off a team that finished 7-5 in the rugged De Anza Division last season, tied for third place with Palo Alto. They include captains Lars Schubert, Liam Amburgey and Connor Sullivan, along with goalie Jake Cannon.

Defending league champion Harker looks to be the team to beat again, and Los Gatos would love to be the team that unseats them.

“We’ll have a solid 10-11 players get a decent amount of playing time and contribute to the team,” Koret said.

Amburgey has been a prolific goal-scorer ever since he was a fresh man, but it’s another part of his game that Koret praised. “Liam has improved a lot on defense, which was one of his main weaknesses last year,” Koret said. “He’s become a true all-around player and provides the team with experience and emotional support. If someone is having a bad day, you bring them over to talk to Liam, and he changes your day right away. He’s the guy the team can rely on outside of the pool because he’s very responsible and on top of things. Some college coaches have already contacted us about him which is pretty exciting because he’s only a junior.”

SHOT MAKER Liam Amburgey, seen here playing for the Stanford water polo club this summer, is one of the top returners for a Los Gatos High boys team that has aspirations to win the SCVAL’s De Anza Division this season.

Koret said a talented freshmen class has boosted the team, with two—Ko ret politely declined to name them until the roster was finalized—likely to start. Koret and assistant coach Peter Blume also work together at San Jose Express water polo club, Koret as one of the club directors and Blume as coach of the 14-and-under team. Some of the players who come to Los Gatos grow up competing for Express, so they know Koret’s system upon entering high school.

“If you take a look at a pic of Lars from when he was a freshman and now as a senior, you really have to look deeply to see any difference,” Koret said. “But in the pool, the experience he has and the way he sees and reads the game, it’s hard to find players like that in this area playing at that level.

The Los Gatos Concert Associa tion has been bringing world-class entertainers to town for 75 years but that legacy is in danger as the asso ciation seeks to rebuild its pre-Covid audience.Thenonprofit organization was es tablished in 1947 as the Los Gatos Community Concert Association but it dropped “community” from the name in 2020 for marketing purposes.

The LGCA often tries to bring Bay Area performers to town because their expenses are less, so they help subsidize the out-of-town artists’ per formances.“InMay, we had the Royal Soci ety Jazz Orchestra perform,” Hayashi said. “They’re from Marin and are well-known internationally.”

“They’re classical but not heavy-du ty,” Hayashi said. “They may have some contemporary songs in there.”

Longtime board member Maryon Hicks, who’s sat on the LGCA board for nearly 40 years, remains active with the group because she wants to “share excellent music” with our community.“Asachild, my mother, who was a piano teacher, took me to community concerts in Ontario, California,” Hicks wrote in an email. “I heard so many of the finest performances of the time (like) Marian Anderson and pianist ArthurHicksRubenstein.”cametoLos Gatos in 1956 to teach musical instruments to Los Ga tos elementary schoolchildren.

But last May’s audience for the Royal Society Jazz Orchestra only numbered around 200, so Hayashi is concerned for the future.

AWARD WINNING The Mesa-Yakushev Duo are set to perform at 2pm on Sept. 25 at Los Gatos United Methodist Church as the Los Gatos Concert Association celebrates the opening of its 75th season. Cuban-American cellist Thomas Mesa and Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev have received rave reviews from reviewers who say their performances are “stupendous” and “mesmerizing.”

Concert Association celebrates 75th season

“The difference between our con certs and other classical concerts is normally the artist comes out and plays and leaves the stage,” LGCA president Kevin Hayashi said. “Our concerts are more personal because the artists explain to the audience why they chose a piece.” Hayashi has been LGCA president for 15 years. “If you work with a volunteer group, it’s usually fun people doing what they like and this is a fun group,” Hayashi said.

LGCA concertgoers are usually se niors, although Hayashi added that “a lot of kids play the piano, so we’d love to have younger families attend.”

In fact, many LGCA performers are internationally known, Hayashi said. The Mesa & Yakushev Duo is an example of award-winning perform ers who have been recognized on the world stage. Cuban-American Cellist Thomas Mesa, who was the 2016 win ner of the prestigious Sphinx Com petition, will be joined on stage by Russian pianist Ilya Yakushev. Yakushev won the 2005 World Pi ano Competition and has performed with the San Francisco Symphony under conductor Michael Tilson Thomas. An online bio describes him as “one of the very best young pianists before the public today.”

“The LGCA was a perfect opportu nity to expose the children and their families to attend outstanding perfor mances,” Hicks said. She pointed to violinist Martin Stoner as an example of a successful performer who attended Los Gatos schools, went to Julliard and returned to town in the early ‘90s to perform for the LGCA.
