Much has been made of the Demo cratic Congressional Campaign Com mittee spending nearly half a million dollars this year on ads in support of a “Make America Great Again” candidate in Michigan to unseat someone who voted to impeach Trump.
An article in the Aug. 17 edition of the Los Gatan incorrectly stated the Cats Restaurant had been sold. It continues to operate under the same ownership. The story suggested the owners were required to pay $77,500 following County enforcement, referencing an earlier Mercury News story. The County says the Cats settled zoning violations related to “illegal adult use” for $10,949.75 and is still assessing the alleged health order violations. The owner of the restaurant disputed the particulars of the settlement, but declined to comment further.

“Just say NO MOORE!” Moore suspects the strong rhetoric is coming from the same camp who were against mask mandates and opposed for mer mayor Marico Sayoc’s policies, last year. He says he actually agrees with many of the points the author made about his posi tions, such as being in support of inclusivity.
The flurry of flyers came the same week Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law new rules outlining public decorum at municipal meetings, a direct response to the very people Moore believes were behind the new Los Gatos posters.

wanted to do,” Heimlich said. “I have a strong passion for law enforcement, so I thought I might become a cop.” When Heimlich was offered the chance to use his video skills to help the Sharks, he jumped at the chance. The Sharks didn’t have a big budget for technology in those days, says Tim Hunter.Herecalls how he even hired Heim lich’s dad to help put a “smart board” up in the dressing room at the Sharks Ice practice facility. To prepare game footage to show to players, a staffer would transfer clips from one VHS tape to another.
“To finally win it and touch it—it’s so surreal,” he said. “It is so incredible.”
Heimlich and his 34.5-pound sil ver-and-nickel cylinder with a bowl on top were the center of attention.
“I’m happy for his family too,” he said. “That’s what this is for—for everybody.”
“San Jose is Silicon Valley,” Hunter remembers thinking. “Why don’t we haveHecomputers?”contactedthe company’s spon sor, HP, brought in five laptops and began training Heimlich on how to use the new system. “He was bang-on fantastic at it,” he said. “I just showed him the path.” That began an incredible run for the 1991 expansion team.
“It’s been unreal,” he said, noting it was amazing to get to share it with his family. “It’s a dream come true.”

The Sharks won the Presidents’ Tro phy, for achieving the best record in the 2008-09 regular season. They made the playoffs every year until 2015. “I started doing simple things,” Heimlich said, noting over the years he was promoted to the role of video coordinator. “I got fully involved with the coaching staff.” There was nothing quite like their 2004 run to the Western Conference Finals, he says. After they missed the playoffs in 2015, Heimlich was let go with the rest of the coaching staff. “It was a learning experience,” he said. “I just got let go from my home townHisteam.”mom, Mitchie Heimlich, re members how difficult that was for her son.
Hunter says back when he won the cup with the Calgary Flames in 1989, he picked it up in a hockey bag.
As the video coach, Heimlich is in charge of challenging questionable calls during the game, and with National Hockey League rule-updates, he kept getting more responsibility. “The technology is all unreal—it’s all HD,” he said. “It’s a pivotal thing.” It also meant added pressure. For example, if he claims an opposing player interfered with their goalie while putting the puck in the net—but this gets dis proven during the challenge—they have to send one of their own players to the penalty box for two minutes.
“Because there are late nights; there are frustrating nights.” But this year, they managed to go all the way—winning the Stanley Cup finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Neighbor Mike Ricci, who won the cup in 1996 with the Colorado Ava lanche, again basked in the glow of the prize that was first awarded in 1893.
“That was hard to see,” she said. “He was doing his best, which was all he couldLuckily,do.” he quickly scored a job in terview in Colorado. “Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy were the two that interviewed me,” he said, re membering how he tried not to lose his cool in front of the two Hall of Famers. “Of course it was intimidating.” Luckily, he made an instant connec tion with Roy, and he was invited to join theThatorganization.yearhefocused on proving his mettle. That included collecting the best assortment of pre-scout video—boiling hundreds of hours of footage down to the 20-30 clips that tell a cohesive story about the team you’re about to go up against. Under Roy, Heimlich was even the one to present the video to the players. That year the Avalanche didn’t make the playoffs, and the following year they had the worst record in franchise history since moving from Quebec. “It was a humbling experience,” Heimlich said. “It was hard, but it made you want to grind and not embarrass yourself and do better the next year.”
As evening turned into night—and beer, popcorn and teddy bear-shaped cookies entered the cup before van ishing—Heimlich took stock of this pivotal moment in his life.

“There’s just that sense of a weight lifted off your shoulders,” he said. “It’s contagious. I want to win next season.”
Instead of just allowing a single goal, it could create an opening for the other team to score again.
Heimlich credits his amazing family for helping him navigate the roller-coast er ride that is professional hockey. “If you don’t have good family support in this job it’s hard to succeed,” he said.
MEMORY OF A LIFETIME Colorado Avalanche video coach Brett Heimlich scoops ice cream into the bowl of the Stanley Cup so his nephews, and other children at the gathering, could have the most memorable chocolate sundae of their lives.
Each team member gets to spend the day with the trophy, and Heimlich decided he’d bring Lord Stanley’s cup to the place where it all began for him—Los Gatos.
He drove down with his wife from Alber ta to celebrate Heimlich’s victory this year.
On Sept. 4, after a winery stop in Gilroy, friends and family from across the continent gathered in his parents’ suburban backyard on one of the hottest weekends of the year.

Los Gatos has plenty of depth with players such as Molly Vanderbosch and Emma Loller doing some good things in the Mitty match. Thompson knows going through situations that test the team will be beneficial in the long run.
10 losgatan.com:20227-13,Septemberlosgatan.com:20227-13,September
Los Gatos led Mitty midway through Game 1 and in the latter stages in Game 2 only to have its passing fall apart. Improved passing, communi cation, defense and transition play are the key factors in a team winning close games, something the Wildcats did frequently last season.
“If anything we got a little bit bet ter at dealing with—and maybe be cause we lost we didn’t deal with the pressure situations—but we certainly experienced them and now we don’t have to be surprised by them later on,” she said.
“Mia is all go and non-stop on the gas pedal,” Thompson said. “That girl is fun to watch fly through the air. She’s very gazelle-like in that she approach es and jumps with such grace and is so coordinated in the air that she’s able to do many things with the volleyball that are not like most 10th-graders. I’m very excited to see where her game grows and where it goes.”
Slover had seven kills and Halsey five in the loss to Mitty. Both play ers also had three service aces each, though Thompson knows the team’s serve-receive must improve if it wants to reach its goals.
FINISHER Sophomore Mia Halsey goes up for a swing in the Wildcats’ four-set loss to Salinas High on Aug. 29. Halsey has emerged as a difference-maker in her first year on the varsity.

“It’s an easy cleanup on a couple of skills and I thoroughly believe in them and am extremely confident with this team moving forward,” Thompson said. “We take care of the balls we should and the balls that are currently better than us, we need to take care of and that’s how we slowly but surely become a better volleyball team.”
SPORTS LOS GATOS REMAINS CONFIDENT AMID TOUGH START
Wildcats confident talent, work ethic will pay off Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor When Los Gatos High girls volley ball coach Brynja Thompson made the non-league schedule for the 2022 sea son, she knew the team might not have a sparkling record at the start. And at 1-5, that’s certainly the case. However, given the team’s talent and the program’s propensity to finish strong like it did last year, Thompson said she has plenty of reasons to be confident in the team’s direction going forward.“Forsure, I don’t think anything is broken by any means,” Thompson said after the Wildcats’ three-set loss to Mitty on Aug. 31. “It’s very early in the season and we’ve got new players doing new things which is always very exciting because they did it at a pretty highTwolevel.”of those newcomers—setters Maya Walker and Kate Vanderbosch— are in their first season at the varsity level. Already, Los Gatos has played ultra-tough competition in Mitty, Sali nas and a slew of Southern California teams in the La Costa Canyon Tourna ment Sept. 2-3 near San Diego. “I’m very pleased with where our younger players are right now,” Thompson said. “Our two setters are playing the best of the best and with a big crowd (against Mitty) and I’m chirping on them to do all sorts of things and gosh, they handled it so well and I’m so stinking proud of them.”Thompson said she has also been pleased with the more experienced returning starters such as Hannah Slover, Nicole Steiner and Allison Black. Slover is a UC Santa Barba ra-commit and one of the most athlet ic players in the entire Central Coast Section.InJune, she joined rarefied air by winning the high jump event in the CIF State Track and Field Championships. On the volleyball court, Slover’s jump ing ability combined with her swing and competitiveness make her one of the premier players in the section. Although Slover didn’t have a ton of kill attempts against Mitty, she unleashed a couple of big swings that the Monarchs couldn’t handle. After one particular point in the third set, Slover pumped her fist, jumped and yelled, exhorting her teammates in the process.Steiner and Black provide steady play at the net, as both possess solid instincts and are formidable with their blocking. Black is lethal on the quick set and Steiner possesses a solid allaroundSophomoregame. Mia Halsey is a rising star and produced some stellar swings against Mitty, hitting through and off the block and having success finding spots against a very sound and tough defensive team.

“Rachel has done a tremendous amount of work to become a really good goalie already,” Wildcats coach Don Appleton said. “Lucy spent the whole off-season training Rachel and doing a lot of extra work with her. Ev eryone is thinking we’ll be softer in the cage than in years’ past, and obviously there will be a little dropoff because Rachel is younger and a little more new at the position, but I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people in how solid we’ll be between the pipes.” After a tremendous 2021 season that saw Los Gatos finish 25-3 and advance to the Central Coast Section’s premier Open Division playoffs, Ap pleton once again is putting a huge emphasis on defense—and with good reason.Allof the top-tier teams in water polo at any level have one thing in common: they play great defense. If the Wildcats are going to repeat as Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division champions, they’ll need to be rock-solid defensively as they were a year ago. “That’s all we’ve been doing in the first couple of weeks of practice is de fense,” Appleton said. “Defense is one of the things you have to love, and it can definitely be taught. You can teach everyone defensive concepts. With (great) offense, a lot of that comes with athleticism, so athletic kids are always going to find ways to score. But defense can be taught and it comes withEveneffort.”though the Wildcats grad uated some standout players, they return some key talents including Karly Frangieh, Maily Isaacs, Karissa Elliott and Lily van Putten. A junior utility and returning all league first team selection, Frangieh is the fastest player on the team and perhaps in the entire SCVAL. She competed in the CIF State Swimming Championships in May after finishing in seventh place in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events in the CCS Finals. At State, Frangieh also was a member of Los Gatos’ 200and 400-free relay teams, with van Putten also on the 200 relay. With fast swimmers like Frangieh and van Putten, the Wildcats should have an advantage on swim-offs and off the “We’recounterattack.bankingon Karly scoring some counter goals and helping us out on defense as well,” Appleton said. Van Putten is projected to have a strong senior season—particularly on the goal-scoring side—after working diligently in the off-season against top-notch competition. “Lily played in a bunch of showcases, and played in Europe a little and got a lot of good experience,” Appleton said. “It’s going to be really interesting to see how she does because she has the poten tial to take over some games. It’s going to be a matter of putting all the pieces together and giving her the space to be a standout player, but also playing with the rest of the group as well.” It was quite a summer for van Put ten, who spent a week in Italy training with water polo great Tony Azevedo and another week in Croatia train ing Maggie Steffens - another water polo great. A standout performance in a Salt Lake City showcase got van Putten invited to compete in the 6-8 sports showcase in Long Beach.
AIM FOR DEFENSIVE PROWESS
WILDCATS
ASCENDING Lily van Putten is one of the Wildcats’ top returners and is coming off a strong off-season in which she played in a number of showcase events.
“Karissa will stand out more so than in the past,” Appleton said. “Last year she was a defensive standout while building her stats and contrib uting in a real quiet way. I think she’ll be a lot more noticeable this year.” Appleton refrains from making projections on how far a team can go this early in the season, but he defi nitely sees a lot of upside.
In addition, van Putten was on a club team that placed 18th at the Ju nior Olympics. Isaacs is another player who did a ton of work in the off-season and has developed in nearly every phase of the game.
Los Gatos looks strong in the pool again Emanuel Lee, Sports Editor For the last couple of years, the Los Gatos High girls water polo team had an embarrassment of riches at the goalie position with Jackie King and LucyTheHolland.duohave since moved on to play at the Division I level, King to Stanford and Holland to UC Davis. Conventional wisdom says the Wild cats will be markedly weaker in the cage this season. Not so fast. In junior Rachel Stephens, Los Ga tos has someone who is more than capable of getting the job done.
“I think we’ve got the pieces and the potential to have a pretty strong season,” he said. “We definitely have the potential to have a really good run this year.”
