Sad long-term and current actions by the city of San Jose.

The only good that can come out of this travesty is that San Jose can become an example of what not to do. Unfortunately, San Jose taxpayers must pay the price for this extremely expensive case study.

This city is the second biggest shit show in the Bay Area. Bested only by SF.

Not all heroes wear capes. Not all heroes carry adamantium shields or swing Asgardian hammers. The one in my block wears cargo shorts, and his weapon of choice: some orange washable spray chalk. He doesn’t break up gang fights or thwart package thieves from running away with your latest Amazon shipment. His skill, his expertise, his crime fighting prowess is writing the word “STOP” in big bold letters with the “O” circling unpicked-up dog shit—a growing trend that’s been plaguing this neighborhood. This brave sneaker savior is striking fear in the hearts of dog-walking scofflaws, letting them know that he’s got a bone to pick if they don’t give enough of a crap about picking up shit. So if you think you can let your dog defecate on the streets and yards where our children play, better beware. The Banksy of Dog Dung is out there, a do-gooder fighting the doodoo-ers.

When I was on the police and fire pension board, I fought tooth and nail against a Canadian consulting firm hired “by the city.” They wrote a report and did a presentation suggesting that the makeup of the boards needed to change by removing employee representatives, because they had a large “conflict of interest.” I wrote a 25-page response … arguing that the investment professionals on the board were a huge conflict of interest.

THE FLY

Wang’s World

Nicholas Chan

SVNEWS

Cupertino’s Planning Commission chair is getting reamed online for trolling YIMBYs on Nextdoor and making not-so-veiled threats about trying to get them fired.

City officials distanced themselves from RAY WANG’s comments about pro-housing activist RICHARD MEHLINGER, saying he was speaking in his capacity as an individual and not on behalf of the Planning Commission. Considering how other prominent Cupertino officials have publicly downplayed the housing crisis and quipped about building a wall to keep people out, it certainly reflects poorly on a city already branded as a NIMBY stronghold. Unsurprisingly, this all started on the NIMBY cesspool that is Nextdoor. Wang, a member of slow-growth group Better Cupertino, posted a message urging people to show up to They a pro-growth event to Did stick it to Vallco Mall What? developers Sand Hill Property Company SEND TIPS TO FLY@ and “save the suburbs METRONEWS. from an onslaught of COM anarchists and YIMBY neoliberal fascists.” A YIMBYite published a screenshot of the post on Twitter, where it caught the attention of Mehlinger, a Dropbox software engineer, who called Wang’s diatribe an “unhinged rant.” Back on Nextdoor, Wang responded indirectly, saying, “We’ll have to talk to Richard’s employer, Dropbox.” Wang then doubled down. “Next time you get harassed by a YIMBY, track down their employer and send their HR, legal and CEO a letter outlining their YIMBY stance, and all their tweets, their digital and social comms to show their lack of civility,” he said. That didn’t sit well with Mehlinger, who showed up to last week’s Planning Commission meeting to give Wang a piece of his mind. “I am not afraid of your threats,” he said, “but there are many, many people in this valley who would be on the street if they lost their next paycheck. The precarity of their situation is due to the racist, classist and exclusionary policies that you and your allies at Better Cupertino consistently defend and attempt to further.”

BUCK STOPS HERE Students protested Santa Clara University’s decision to accept a $4 million donation from Charles Koch.

Pay to Sway Billionaire’s donation sparks debate over philanthropy, free speech BY NICHOLAS CHAN

S

ANTA CLARA University welcomed an $11 million gift to build on its efforts in promoting entrepreneurship to students of all majors, from the arts and humanities to science and engineering. The private Jesuit school said it would expand and rebrand a business hub on campus as the Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in honor of the Ciocca family that chipped in a $7 million share of the grant earlier this spring.

The remaining $4 million ignited backlash—swift and fierce. More than 1,000 students, staff and alumni signed a missive denouncing the grant. Professors called it a betrayal of Jesuit values. Student

activists hoisted signs demanding that university officials put “people over profit.” The Faculty Senate Council voted 30-0-2 for a resolution calling on the administration to refuse the money. Why the outcry? Because the $4 million grant came from oil heir Charles Koch, by way of his grant-giving non-profit the Charles Koch Foundation. But this isn’t the first time SCU has accepted money from the Koch Foundation. In 2007, the Civil Society Institute, an SCU economics organization received a $5,000 grant for its “educational programs.” But the $4 million grant this year has captured the SCU community’s attention with the administration’s public announcement of the gift. Concerns range from his petroleum empire’s impact on the environment to the Koch foundation’s sway on higher education. Many wondered: Would the money come with strings attached?

“Will there be academic freedom?” SCU political science professor Dennis Gordon asks. “That’s the question that continues to come up.” Jasmine Banks, executive director of Unkoch My Campus, an organization dedicated to fighting donor influence in higher education, claims she knows the answer. “It’s fiscal control,” she asserts in a phone interview. “It’s using your donation to coerce institutions into your agenda.” Still others defended Koch Foundation’s generosity, batting away criticism as reactionary and devoid of nuance. SCU political science professor Peter Minowitz says detractors get so hung up on the Koch family’s transgressions that they fail to realize it’s also done a lot to lift people up. “Be wary of the tendency to identify the boogeyman,” Minowitz says. “There’s that danger that if you are too indiscriminate in identifying evil everywhere, you become blind to the good and oversimplify things.” He adds, “We need to loosen our standards of what makes you irredeemable. There is a disturbing herd mentality. We preach diversity, but how committed are we to it?” Charles Koch and his brother David Koch are each ranked by Forbes as the eighth richest people in the world. Each boasts a net worth of $60 billion.

the school granted Koch officials a say in hiring and performance reviews of professors funded by the donations. At SCU, the objections also stem from concerns about Koch Industries’ business practices being at odds with the school’s values. According to federal regulatory records, the company has been fined a total of $836 million for hundreds of legal violations—the vast majority for environmental crimes and infractions. In 2000, the company paid $30 million to settle claims related to more than 300 oil spills in six states. At the time, it was the largest-ever civil penalty imposed under US environmental laws. That was the same year a federal grand jury returned a 97-count criminal indictment against the company for covering up illegal releases of 91 metric tons of cancer-causing benzene from one of its Texas oil refineries. For SCU civil engineering professor Ed Mauer, who’s spent the past few decades researching climate change impacts on North and Central American water supplies, linking arms with a Koch organization is unacceptable. “The Koch family is one of the primary forces behind the misinformation campaign to distort science,” Mauer says. Outgoing SCU President Michael Engh, S.J. bats away concerns about undue influence. The Kochs, he assures, played no part in hiring Christopher Norris, executive director of the Ciocca Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, or any of his fellow administrators. As for the eight faculty slated for hire under the terms of the $4 million grant deal, Engh says SCU will call the shots. “The gift agreement explicitly acknowledges that Santa Clara remains independent from any influence by the Koch Foundation,” he says. Koch Foundation spokeswoman Tonya Mullins says the non-profit has made strides to become more transparent about its philanthropy. “Each of our gifts is tailored to ensure scholars have the resources and freedom to pursue their vision,” she explains. SCU leaders vowed to form an oversight committee to put to rest any concerns about improper influence. Engh, who says there’s no plan to revoke the grant, made a call for unity. “Do we focus solely on what divides us?” he asks. “Or do we seek the common ground and work to improve humanity from there?”

The pair are best known for spending hundreds of millions of dollars to promote partisan causes and political candidates. They bankroll partisan think tanks and lobby against taxes and regulations. According to Inside Philanthropy, liberal donors such as the Russell Sage, Soros and Ford foundations also shower American colleges with gifts—just not nearly at the same scale as the Kochs and their allies. In recent years, the Koch Foundation has emerged as one of US academia’s biggest private patrons, spending $200 million on business programs, professorships and conferences. In 2016, about $50 million of the foundation’s gifts— twice as much as the year prior—got divvied up among 249 colleges. In 2017, the non-profit bequeathed a combined $120 million to more than 300 colleges. The donations have been condemned by the American Association of University Professors, whose president last year called them politically motivated, an attempt to polarize higher education by creating ideologically motivated curriculum. Evidence at campuses throughout the country seem to bear that out. In 2014, the Koch Foundation donated $1 million grant to create the Center for Political Thought and Leadership within the School of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies. Matthew Garcia, who helmed the department at the time, accused the Kochs’ philanthropic arm of influencing faculty recruitment. “The dean of humanities told me to shut up when I spoke out,” Garcia recounts in a phone interview. Part of what raised Garcia’s suspicions was a senior professor’s willingness to give up a tenured position at Emporia State University to become an assistant professor at ASU’s Koch-funded department. Amid faculty pushback, ASU rejected the candidate. But Garcia says his disillusionment over the breach of academic independence ultimately led him to jump ship for Dartmouth College. Similar accusations have roiled a host of other campuses throughout the nation, including Florida State, Wake Forest and Arizona State universities. Early last year, a student-led lawsuit against George Mason University— recipient of some $50 million-andcounting in Koch gifts—unearthed previously private records showing how

BY THE NUMBERS

Immigrants in Silicon Valley BY NICHOLAS CHAN President Trump’s recent threats to launch mass ICE raids and end the Dreamer program caused widespread panic in Santa Clara County. In light of the immigration issues dominating the headlines this past week, here’s a rundown of key data about immigration in Silicon Valley and beyond.

800 OUT OF THE QUESTION Trump Administration retreats from its efforts to add citizenship question.

White House Backs Down From Citizenship Question BY NICHOLAS CHAN Silicon Valley leaders hailed the Supreme Court’s decision to reject the federal government’s argument for adding a question about citizenship to the 2020 census. The high court gave the White House another chance to justify the controversial question. But the Trump Administration backed down, allowing the US Census Bureau to begin printing forms for the 2020 census without the citizenship question. “The Trump administration must not succeed in its efforts to suppress participation in the 2020 census by stoking fear in our immigrant community,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a statement last week. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross initially claimed that the question is necessary to improve citizenship data and enforce the Voting Rights Act, legislation that prohibits racial discrimination in voting. But federal judges ruled that Ross lied. Evidence presented in court showed that it wasn’t until Ross unsuccessfully requested for citizenship data from other agencies that he used the Voting

Rights Act as an excuse to add the query in question. San Jose was one of the first cities to sue the federal government over the attempt to include the citizenship question, which critics feared would deter immigrants from taking part in the decennial survey and lead to a critical undercount of the US population—especially in this county, where roughly 40 percent of residents are foreign-born. A question about citizenship hasn’t been asked in the US census since 1950. Though the Census Bureau has fielded requests to reinstate it over the years, the agency has held firm, saying the question risks discouraging undocumented immigrants from responding and would result in an inaccurate tally. That’s exactly what local officials are worried about. “We have a huge immigrant population. The impact on people of color, immigrants who happens to be undocumented is in the tens of thousands,” county Supervisor

David Cortese said on the day the court announced its decision. “If they become fearful of answering questions, then shame on all of us, shame on the White House and the president of the United States.” Even if the question doesn’t end up on the census form, residual fears could still prevent full participation. In response to the fears of an undercount, the county and local cities have launched what they call the Local Update of Census Addresses operation (LUCA) to ensure that nontraditional households in low-income communities are identified. The effect of undercounting would be far reaching. The federal government uses data from the census to determine the number of seats to allocate for each state in the House of Representatives and how to apportion federal spending to states and counties. That’s money for public services like roads, schools and hospitals. Liccardo said that undercounting in the 2010 census cost San Jose almost $200 million in federal funds.

Number of volunteers for Santa Clara County’s Rapid Response Network, a 24-hour hotline that dispatches people to observe and document reported ICE raids. Similar hotlines have cropped up around the country, with 25 up and running in California alone.

200, 000

The estimated number of undocumented immigrants who call Santa Clara County home.

30, 000

The number of Santa Clara County recipients of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), an Obama-era policy granting two-year deportation waivers and work permits for undocumented immigrants who were brought to the country as children.

-14%

The decrease in total number of unauthorized immigrants in the United States, from 12.2 million undocumented immigrants in 2007 to 10.5 million in 2017.

3 MILLION

The number of undocumented immigrants granted amnesty under President Reagan. Last week, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said America needs a similar reform bill today. “We have to find a path to citizenship and legal status for the undocumented immigrants who face the daily threat of deportation at any moment,” he said.

HE DATE OF July 5, 1989, lives in punk rock infamy, in Santa Clara and around the world. On that day 30 years ago, Dee Dee Ramone played his final gig as a member of the Ramones at One Step Beyond. That whole month in particular resonates with many locals. Located at 1400 Martin Ave. in

Santa Clara, the original incarnation of One Step Beyond, in the last half of the ‘80s, was probably the South Bay’s first legitimate all-ages goth, new wave and punk hangout, a huge sweaty club that catered to all the outcasts back when San Jose and Santa Clara were miserable suburban wastelands. It was the only place a 16-year-old could go dancing until 3 in the morning. People even lost their virginities inside the place. The Ramones were the band that for all practical purposes

invented punk rock as we know it, and Dee Dee invented punk rock bass playing. He was also the band’s primary songwriter. At One Step, the Ramones played at least one gig every year, sometimes two. Tickets rarely surpassed 10 bucks. No one at One Step knew the 1989 shows would be Dee Dee’s last with the band, but since the Ramones played there so many times, the staff felt like part of the band. “What you saw beforehand was like you were a part of this great dysfunctional family,” said Stan Kent, who owned One Step at the time. “They’d all show up and not one of them really had anything in common with the other and they were always fighting. And the thing you’ll always remember is that at some point, they will defer to Monte [Melnick], the tour manager. It’s like he was Dad.” The gigs in July of 1989 achieved significance for several reasons.

One year earlier, in 1988, while the Ramones were in town gigging at One Step, the author Stephen King called them and asked the band to write a song for the film adaptation of Pet Sematary, his horror novel of the same name. Later that year, the band visited Stephen King’s house in Bangor, Maine, and it took Dee Dee less than an hour to write all the lyrics in King’s basement. By the time the Ramones returned to One Step in July of 1989, the film was out and the song and video were everywhere. I distinctly remember Joey standing on stage, telling the crowd that the Ramones had been in San Jose when Stephen King called them. In pure goth fashion, Kent wanted the band to capitalize on the situation by donating the proceeds from one show to the Humane Society, which was then located right down the street. The band agreed. Although the benefit show was advertised everywhere, the bureaucrats at the Humane Society rejected the idea at the last minute. “They didn’t think it was appropriate to be associated with the movie and the Ramones,” Kent said. “The people I was dealing with said, ‘Look, it’s the board of directors, don’t embarrass us by going public with this.’” Joey was also a fan of Indian food, especially Vindaloo, so every year Kent would try to recommend a place to go, all while the band would yell at each other in the van. However, the band almost always shelved their relentless infighting once the show started, a quality that audiences rarely saw. The Ramones had a militaristic approach to getting the gig done. “For all of their differences—and maybe there’s a life lesson here for all of us—for all their differences, when they got up on stage, they did put all that aside and deliver, always, some of the greatest performances you’ll ever see,” Kent said. “I don’t think the audiences seeing them then, and perhaps now, realized how much fighting had been going on minutes before the show, and went on right after.” Dee Dee later returned for the band’s final 1996 gig in Los Angeles, but the July 5, 1989, date in Santa Clara is mentioned in every tour archive and every memoir, and even in museums, putting Santa Clara on the map all over the world.

Eating it Up How a carnival barking New York pitchman and two San Jose chow hounds have shaped and reshaped the world of competitive eating BY NICK VERONIN

L

UCAS JACKSON CAN’T hold a candle to Matt Stonie. The wiley and incorrigible character of “Cool Hand Luke”—played by Paul Newman in the 1967 film of the same name—engaged in plenty of memorable and high stakes hijinx while doing time on a muggy Florida work farm. There were his numerous inventive escapes, his stubborn resolve in facing down George Kennedy’s hulking “Dragline,” and, of course, his successful attempt at eating 50 eggs.

“He’s an amateur,” Stonie says. “Times have changed. Move over.” Stonie is only half kidding. It’s true that Luke’s 50-eggs-in-an-hour challenge was a work of fiction. It’s also true that Stonie stuffed 120 eggs down his gullet in just eight minutes on Oct. 5, 2013. The San Jose native is a professional competitive eater. He’s ranked 3rd in the world by an organization known as Major League Eating. And, as stunning as his gutbusting feat may seem, it still falls short of the world record. At 141 eggs in eight minutes, that title belongs to another San Jose denizen known as Joey “Jaws” Chestnut. Though the men are friendly with

one another outside of competition, both have spent the past few months steeling themselves in preparation for the year’s biggest competition of consumption: the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. This 4th of July, the two will face off yet again—as Chestnut seeks to defend and perhaps best his world record of 74 hot dogs in 10 minutes, while Stonie endeavors to upset the reigning champ, as he has done just once before, in 2015.

EATING WELL On Jul. 1, Chestnut is at the home he owns in the Blossom Hill neighborhood of San Jose. He didn’t

pay cash—competitive eaters don’t make that kind of money. But he did qualify for a mortgage based upon the income he generates by stretching his stomach. “I can’t believe I’ve been doing it this long,” Chestnut says with a chuckle. When this all took off about 14 years ago, the Vallejo-born San Jose State University grad assumed he would eventually fall back on his civil engineering degree. Instead, what began with a first-place trophy in a Stockton asparagus eating contest, led to an impressive third-place finish at the 2005 Nathan’s Famous contest, and ultimately morphed into a career, complete with corporate sponsorships and his own line of mustard.

AMERICAN MYTHMAKING George Shaw of Major League Eating, left, helped dramatize the rise of San Jose's pro eater Joey Chestnut, center, while Matt Stonie, also of San Jose, has carved his own path using social media.

During his time in competitive eating, Chestnut has seen some pretty big changes. For starters, when he first took the stage in Coney Island, most of his challengers—aside from the former world champ, Takeru Kobayashi—were overweight and out of shape. “It was all trial and error,” Chestnut says of those early days in the midaughts. In the years since, Chestnut has honed his training regimen. His workouts include a number of exercises he has invented—like chomping on stress balls, lifting weights attached to an athletic mouth guard and swallowing as much air as his stomach will allow while doing crunches.

All of this and more was recently captured by an ESPN film crew for the recently aired documentary, The Good, The Bad, The Hungry. The film, part of the sporting network’s 30 for 30 docuseries, debuted on Jul. 2. It follows the rise and fall of Kobayashi—the Japanese competitive eating pioneer who played a significant part in turning Americans on to the sport—and the ascent of Chestnut. For the better part of a decade, the rivalry between the two helped drive public interest in competitive eating. Kobayashi was already well established in Japan—where competitive eating took off years before it ever gained traction in the

United States—when he showed up at the 2001 Nathan’s Famous contest. That year he doubled the standing record of 25, downing 50 hotdogs in 12 minutes. Kobayashi’s technique is broken down in great detail in The Good, The Bad, The Hungry. “Both speed and stomach capacity are necessary,” he explains while demonstrating his methods. First, he breaks two hot dogs in half, pushing all four pieces into his mouth and quickly swallowing; then comes the bun, which he dunks in water (the warmer the better), before sucking down the mush. No movement is wasted in the process. It’s all a seamless blur—a yogic flow of mastication and ingestion.

Held annually on the 4th of July, the Nathan’s Famous competition is something of an American tradition. And like any good national pastime, it has spawned its own legends and lore. It can be verified that the event

dates back to 1972. But Mortimer Matz and Max Rosey, who began promoting the Nathan’s Famous event in the early ’70s, previously claimed that the challenge was first held on Jul. 4, 1916. Matz, a somewhat notorious New York publicity agent, has since admitted that he and the late Rosey cooked up the stunt—inventing the 1916 date “in Coney Island pitchman style” to give the event an aura of old-timey American authenticity. It worked. In a 2010 New York Times article, an editor’s note concedes that The Gray Lady was initially duped by the fabrication. However, the truth in this instance is less important than the legend, according to George Shea—who began emceeing the Nathan’s Famous event in 1988 while working for Matz and Rosey. He would eventually break away from the established agency to form Shea Communications with his brother, Richard. In the ensuing years, Shea helped lead the Nathan’s Famous contest out of the obscure and uniquely

The American spirit yearns to lend a helping hand and since 2014 the Rotary Club of San Jose has offered that in the form of fireworks. The city had to suspend its beloved Fourth of July fireworks show in 2009 after the recession tightened San Jose’s budget, heightening the use of illegal pyrotechnics to the chagrin of many residents. In 2014, the Rotary Club celebrated its 100th birthday with a gift: returning LIGHT SHOW The rocket’s red the celestial Independence glare over San Jose. Day celebration to Discovery Meadow for what was meant to be a one-time commitment. Yet San Jose will have its fireworks for the sixth year in a row this 4th of July, thanks to friends at the Rotary and sponsors. “It’s so touching to walk the meadow and see three generations on the same blanket,” said fireworks committee chair Jim Gardner. As for this year’s $135,000 spectacular, the all-volunteer committee has developed a relationship with San Jose Jazz, who will pull out the SJZ “Boom Box truck”—a converted van with upgraded sound system and fold-out stage—at 3pm for a show with performer Isaiah. Other live bands begin at 6pm and the evening’s National Anthem will be sung by Rotary Club member Michelle Acosta. Last year, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) objected to the danger the fireworks posed to planes flying overhead. But the FAA, Rotary fireworks committee and San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo scheduled the show to have minimal impact on flight arrivals and departures. For more info, check out rotaryfireworks.org.

New York subculture of Coney Island sideshows, transforming it into the World Cup of competitive eating. The secret, he says, is storytelling. From Babe Ruth’s called shot, to Doc Ellis’ purportedly LSD-fueled no no, tall tales only grow taller as time passes and fans debate the facts. After enough time passes, a tall tale will become a myth. Shea, who co-founded of the Major League Eating organization with his brother in 1997, is the mythmaker of competitive eating. The Good, The Bad, The Hungry makes that abundantly

‘They say competitive eating is the battleground upon which God and Lucifer wage war for men’s souls.’ —GEORGE SHEA clear. Shea looms large throughout the documentary—both in direct interviews and file footage.

BOARDWALK EMPIRE “They say that competitive eating is the battleground upon which God and Lucifer wage war for men’s souls, my friends. And they are right,” Shea intones, pointing a trembling finger at the crowd. “For this is a battle for the ages. This is a battle for the titans—the early gods—who come to Earth only once, in only one location. And that is at the corner of Surf and Stillwell avenues, at Nathan’s Famous.” The monologue, which opens The Good, The Bad, The Hungry, rolls off Shea’s tongue. He has adopted

the cadence of a carnival barker and wears a woven boater hat for aesthetic reinforcement. It is pure spectacle—and that’s the point. “Every single thing in our existence is about narrative,” Shea says over the phone, just one day before the airing of the documentary. “I really enjoy developing the introductions that I deliver. They’re very important to me. Some are comedic, some are epic, some are fantastical and just out-there.” After the film’s opening sequence, viewers are introduced to the world of competitive eating at the turn of the millennium. While pie eating contests are common at county fairs and the Nathan’s Famous competition is known to New Yorkers, the majority of Americans have yet to catch on. But that is all about to change. In 2001, Shea endeavors to increase the visibility of the Nathan’s Famous contest. He piques the interest of Josh Getlin, a journalist working at The Los Angeles Times, by telling him that there is a small circuit of contests for passionate competitive eaters. “They are travelling the blue highways of America searching for glory,” Shea says, remembering his pitch to Getlin. Looking back, Shea admits that he may have taken a page out of Matz and Rosey’s playbook, but he doesn’t seem to regret it. The resulting piece, “To The Glutton, The Gold,” helped spur a wave of national media interest in competitive eating. “A lot of what I say is not literally true,” he says in the 30 for 30 documentary—using both his pearly white teeth and steely blue eyes to flash a knowing smile at his interviewer. “But it’s emotionally true.”

FEEDING FRENZY The timing was perfect. Just as the national media began amplifying Shea’s narrative, Kobayashi arrived in America. He became a star of the then-fledgling genre of reality TV. One program from 2002, dubbed Glutton Bowl: The World’s Greatest Eating Competition, features Kobayashi downing nearly 18 pounds of cow brains in 15 minutes.

OLD GLORY According to Major League Eating co-founder George Shea, right, Joey Chestnut is an ‘American Hero.’

Chestnut was 20 years old when Glutton Bowl aired, and in The Good, The Bad, The Hungry, he reveals that Kobayashi was instrumental in inspiring him to pursue competitive eating. In 2003, ESPN started broadcasting the Nathan’s Famous contest. A study of Google Trends shows that searches for “competitive eating” surged in the middle of the decade—with July 2007, the year Chestnut first beat Kobayashi in Coney Island, representing the greatest spike in queries. The next year, 2008, saw the debut

of the Travel Channel’s Man vs. Food program. Chestnut was featured in the 15th episode of the premier season. In that installment, host Adam Richman visited San Jose— highlighting a hot wing challenge at Smoke Eaters, massive steaks at Henry’s World Famous Hi-Life and the Burritozilla at Iguanas. With the exception of one tie— with Kobayashi in 2008—and his loss to Stonie in 2015, Chestnut has taken the top spot in every Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest

BBQ BEASTMODE Joey Chestnut recently demolished The Art of Barbeque’s monstrous “66” burrito challenge—5 pounds of fries, pulled pork, tri-tip, macaroni and more—in a little more than 11 minutes.

since 2007. He continues to push himself, with the aim of topping his personal best of 74 hot dogs. However, as Chestnut grows older, he has begun to encounter new obstacles. He used to be able to perform a full training session—eating as much as he can stomach as fast as possible—every four days. Now he says his recovery takes nearly a week. He runs and hikes often to keep his cardiovascular system healthy. He says breath control is essential to his success as a competitor. His metabolism is changing as well. Keeping his weight down is a constant concern—both for him and for his doctor, who reluctantly gives Chestnut a pass while encouraging him to be careful. “She isn’t saying what I’m doing is healthy,” Chestnut says of his physician. “But she says it doesn’t seem to be hurting my body.” Still, he adds, during the summer— the peak of the competitive eating

season—he can expect to gain about 30 pounds. When winter rolls around, he works on cutting back. He eats less, works out more and catches up on projects around the house. But just because he is dialing back the calories doesn’t mean he isn’t training. By pounding a gallon of water every morning he can keep his stomach in shape without gaining weight.

THE NEW SCHOOL Sporting dynasties can be thrilling for fans of the winning team, but when contests become predictable they tend to lose their appeal. While Chestnut’s rise was a boon for Major League Eating, his continued dominance could eventually cause viewers to change the channel. However, if followers of Major League Eating get their fill of Chestnut, they can always tune into Stonie.

While Stonie certainly benefits from the national stage that Major League Eating provides, it seems that Shea and his team are having trouble capitalizing on the power of social media. “My clients have always asked for major, traditional media placement,” Shea says. “And we’ve always provided that.” He knows how to land a spot on the Today show and can obtain prime placement in print tabloids. However, Shea admits he “didn’t truly understand the power” of platforms like YouTube until recently. “Matt has an extraordinary presence,” Shea says. “I just like watching the guy.” But until Shea can figure out how to tap into Stonie’s secret sauce, all he will be able to do is watch from the sidelines.

FRUITFUL ENDEAVOR Before tech took over, the Santa Clara Valley was known for its flavorful apricots.

A ’COT ABOVE Silicon Valley’s native Blenheim apricot is back, but its season is short BY LISA PRINCE NEWMAN

C

ALIFORNIA’S BELOVED fruit, the Blenheim apricot, will arrive in local markets by midJuly. The Blenheim has the power to enchant adults and children alike with its gorgeous color, sweet perfume and well-balanced sweet and tart flavors.

Jams, nectar, syrup, pies and pastry reach perfection with this variety of apricot, which is uniquely adapted to the Bay Area’s moderate coastal climate. The Blenheim apricot and its heirloom cousins, the Moorpark and Alameda-Hemskirke, shared international fame with the French prune for nearly 100 years, when the Santa Clara Valley was known as “The

Valley of Heart’s Delight.” Back then, orchards spread across the region in every direction. In springtime, visitors from around the Bay Area, across California and even distant parts of the world, came to see the blossom spectacle celebrated at the Saratoga Blossom Festival, which ran from 1900 to 1942. These varieties made up the entire apricot marketplace, which meant that their short season, approximately three to four weeks beginning around the Fourth of July, sent the entire region into a frenzy of picking, drying, preserving, jam making and baking. Traditions passed down through generations can be seen with the jars of homemade apricot jam that still fill the shelves at local county fairs. In the post-war decades, as urban sprawl swept over the Santa Clara Valley, new apricot varieties such as

the Patterson and Tilton developed to grow in the Central Valley’s more extreme heat. Over time, eastern Washington State expanded its apricot production and contributed other fine varieties. Many of these apricots ripen earlier and later than the Blenheim. Today, you can find apricots in the market from May to August. But a taste test will show that the peak of flavor comes right at midsummer with Santa Clara Valley’s Blenheim. Fortunately, much of the crop is dried so their bright, tangy flavor can be enjoyed throughout the year in a wide variety of dishes, both sweet and savory. It is no surprise to Bay Area residents that new farmland is not being created. On the contrary, the number of orchard acres in Santa Clara and San Benito counties, particularly planted in apricots, is diminishing each year. The farm families who continue to produce this extraordinary fruit within our region are becoming as rare as the Blenheim variety itself. Blenheim apricots can be found at the farm shops listed below, local farmers markets and select grocery stores. Ask for them beginning in July to be sure you get the quantity you need. Plan to attend special events when the fruit is at its peak to support the local orchardists who continue to produce this world-class fruit. Lisa Prince Newman is the author of “For the Love of Apricots: Recipes and Memories of the Santa Clara Valley.” She will be signing books at Andy’s Orchards Farm Tour and Tasting, Jul. 7 and Jul. 20 from 10am to 3pm, 1615 Half Road, Morgan Hill; and at Books Inc., Aug. 1, at 6:30pm, 1875 S. TICKET TO RIDE

AKI KUMAR

Fri, 6pm, Free Courthouse Square, Redwood City

Fri, 8:30pm, Free O’Malley’s Sports Pub, Mountain View

The one and only Sir Paul McCartney is coming to the SAP Center next week. But tickets to see living legends are expensive. Ticket to Ride, on the other hand, are playing for free at Redwood City’s family-friendly Music on the Square series. This Beatles tribute act has been channeling its collective passion for the Fab Four into energetic live shows around the Bay Area for more than two decades. You don’t need to be a math whiz to work it out. (MS)

San Jose has a long and thriving blues tradition, but there’s no one on the scene quite like Aki Kumar. The San Jose denizen has made a name for himself by incorporating Bollywood elements into his Chicago-rooted soul music. “The Only Bombay Blues Man” grew up listening to Bollywood and traditional Indian music long before picking up a harmonica. Kumar learned fast, diving head first into the local blues community and becoming a dedicated student of the distinctly American artform. In addition to his many South Bay residencies, Kumar has performed at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and toured Russia and Scandinavia. (KA)

SOB X RBE

Sat, 10pm, $20+ Pure Nightclub, Sunnyvale This buzzworthy Vallejo rap crew first grabbed mainstream visibility with “Paramedic!”—a fiery banger, which appeared on the Kendrick Lamar-curated Black Panther: The Album. Riding the crest of their latest full-length release, Family Not A Group, the 707 set bring their hard-hitting sound to the South Bay. The April 2019 LP features core members Slimmy B, DaBoii, Yhung T.O. and Lul G spitting over beats by Oakland-born GOOD Music producer Hit-Boy. The result is a multi-layered approach to a distinct Bay Area sound, which has solidified SOB X RBE as one of the Bay Area’s most promising hiphop acts. (MP)

ED JOHNSON & NOVO TEMPO Sat, 6pm, Free St. James Park, San Jose Novo Tempo is translated from Portugese as “new times.” San Jose Jazz and its “mobile music experience”—a truck converted into the self-contained stage known as the “Boom Box”—host master guitarist Ed Johnson and his troupe this weekend. It’s part of SJZ’s larger series of free summer events. A jazz ensemble with Brazilian flare, Novo Tempo have been together since 2002 and have two albums to their name: Movimento and The Other Road. Strings and percussion harmonize in undulating Latin waves, while the band’s wind section recalls distant lands and faint memories through swinging arcs and glittery rumble. (ER)

SCOUT GILLETT Sun, 7pm, Free The Ritz, San Jose

Scout Gillett, one third of New York indie trio Shadow Year, is stepping out on her own. Incorporating dreamy chord progressions and otherworldly vocals into her music, the Brooklyn singer and songwriter’s blissful punk ballads recall Sharon Van Etten, Blondie and Cat Power. In February, Gillett released her first single, “Signal,” featuring Katy Rea, a fellow musician and Brooklynite. Now on her first tour, Gillett will be accompanied by Katy Rea in this local show presented by San Jose promotion collective The Come Up. (KA)

It’s been 50 years since a fluteshredding Scotsman named Ian Anderson first brought his group, Jethro Tull, to America. To celebrate, Anderson is returning for another lap around the states. On this tour, he and his band will focus on the first 15 years of Tull—which gave fans albums like Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung and Thick as a Brick. But Anderson is not one to live in the past. In 2017, he released Jethro Tull – The String Quartets, featuring many of the band’s best known songs performed by the Carducci String Quartet. There’s also a new album in the works, with a tentative 2020 release. (MS)

With 60 gold and platinum discs and over 100 million albums sold, Sir Paul McCartney is arguably the most successful songwriter in history. Since The Beatles split in 1970, he has released many beloved albums as a solo artist and with his band, Wings—and engaged in some notable collaborations with the likes of Michael Jackson, Kanye and the surviving members of Nirvana. Last month, he released a two-disc, 26-song album, Egypt Station: Explorer’s Edition, an expanded cut of his 2018 LP, Egypt Station. (KA)

From sampling entire fast food menus to testing their drunk driving skills (in a safe environment, of course), this quartet of online influencers has tried it all. ST-ART UP At just 11 square feet, the new 3F Gallery in Japantown does a lot with a little.

Locals Only Focusing on SJ artists, Japantown’s 3F Gallery dreams big in a small space BY MIKE HUGUENOR

T

HIS MAY, Japantown welcomed a new resident: 3F Gallery. At only 11 square feet, it is easily one of the smallest galleries in the city, or pretty much anywhere. But what 3F lacks in square footage, it more than makes up for in ambition.

“It was a space that was created to meet the needs that we saw in the community,” says founder Imran Najam.

Those needs were simple: San Jose artists needed support. “I’ve kind of been upset by the trajectory that San Jose has taken regarding the art scene,” Najam says. “They’ve been sponsoring a lot of projects recently that aren’t by San Jose artists, like the Santa Clara bridge with the light-up circles. The new [city] logo was designed by a firm in Kansas City. These are big money projects. I think those resources should be allocated to the community.”

Najam (who uses they/them pronouns) figured that if the city wasn’t going to support local artists, they might as well give it a shot themselves. Inspired by indie videogame Moonlighter, Najam began to think about opening up a storefront. After a trip to LA where they visited the Last Book Store’s community workshop space and the nearby Fold Gallery, Najam came back with an idea. “I really wanted to open a store, and I started thinking the best way to do it was to help all my friends sell their art,” they say. “There really isn’t that space that you can just walk in and be like, ‘Oh, this person is from San Jose. Is it possible to sell my art?’ Again, we were kind of seeing a lack of that in San Jose.” By the time they thought of opening a physical store, Najam was already part of an artist collective. Consisting of lifelong friends and like-minded peers, the collective had

formed around the development of a student newspaper at De Anza. Eventually, the paper evolved into a magazine, whose staff comprised the 3F collective. “That’s what kind of introduced us to the art scene in San Jose,” Najam says. “We interviewed the folks of DDEF (Dream Daringly and Execute Fearlessly), and talked about their collective and what they’re doing in San Jose. We talked to a lot of local musicians. We had a lot of fun with this project, but we were all thinking about what we wanted to do with our lives.” Initially, they considered forming a design house. Then, over the summer, Tam Tran, owner of Japantown’s Classic Loot, began soliciting popup shops for her second location next to the former Wing’s Chinese Restaurant on Jackson Street. Najam told her about their plans for an art gallery of local artists. “Basically, we bonded over this idea, and she liked it so much she offered to rent it out to us. It started as an experimental, one-month popup, but we hope to be there as long as possible.” On opening night in May, 3F’s walls featured works from 27 local artists. Works ranged from portraits, photos and conceptual pieces to paintings of local landmarks like the Western Appliances sign at Bascom and San Carlos, as well as zines and postcards—virtually all of them by San Jose artists. Now, the gallery (whose name stands for “Form,” “Function,” and a third “F” for “whatever each artist brings to the space”) is preparing for its first artwork rotation. For the months of July and August, 3F will be featuring 14 new artists. In an effort to bring in as much up-and-coming local talent as possible, the gallery remains open to submissions year-round. “There’s so much untapped potential in the art community in San Jose,” Najam says. “I may sound like a city official when I say this, but it’s basically a ‘stArt up space.’ That’s kind of a joke I had from our opening.”

Magic & Mayhem Facing a new evil, Peter Parker grows up fast in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

I

T’S NOT YET the Fourth, and audiences can already experience Summer Movie Leakage. Spider-Man: Far From Home commences with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Maria Hill (Cobey Smulders) examining a trashed Mexican village. Was this the same town Rodan took apart in Godzilla, King of Monsters? In fact, it was a windstorm: “the cyclone had a face,” Fury rumbles. The giant wind beast returns and coalesces like a thunderhead, and out

of the skies comes… a guy named Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal), a flying superman in a glass helmet, a denizen of a parallel Earth come to save our own. Prior to the release of Spider-Man: Far From Home, it was considered a spoiler to name the deceased hero who went to his reward in Avengers: Endgame, the second most popular film of all time. Anyway, his loss hangs heavy over the film, and memorials abound. None are more clumsy than the opening, a high school video tribute with flickering candles and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” ululating in the background. After this squire lost his knight,

Peter Parker (the eager and charming Tom Holland) longs to be the 16-yearold neighborhood hero he once was instead of an Avenger. It being summer, he’s slated for a school vacation taking in Europe’s most decorative capitals. This’ll give him a chance to court the brown-eyed and diffident Mary Jane; his comic relief buddy, Ned (Jacob Batalon), advises him to play the field: “We’re American bachelors!” Familiar teenage summer-vacation stuff ensues among the canals and the castles, with Curb Your Enthusiasm’s J.B. Smoove and Martin Starr as the inept chaperones. Parker draws the attention of new mentors: good cop (Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan) and bad cop (naturally, Samuel L.) Off to Venice, Prague and London, each city ravished by an uninspiring kaiju, wrestled into submission by SpiderMan’s new fishbowl-headed pal from the multiverse. Would that the big plot twist arrived just in time, like Spider-Man himself. Longtime students of the lore will see it coming (though it’d be fun to watch the amazement of a nearby child). The movie finally gets some gusto with

THE ILLUSIONIST Not all is as it seems with Quinten Beck, aka Mysterio.

Spider-Man caught in a new kind of fight. He’s psyched out, boggled by illusions, forced through a horror-maze of guilt and anxieties, and given an unexpected goodbye kiss… from a Thalys train travelling at 200 MPH. The movie is full of things that don’t get the emphasis they deserve. We hear how Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) rematerialized after Thanos’ fateful snap: into the middle of what sounds like a bedroom farce. She describes the scene awkwardly at a public meeting, instead of letting us see it staged. We could have had a few more minutes with the ever-lissome Tomei. It’s redundant to mack on her. She could swim in Lake Superior, and it’d still run dry before it slaked the thirst of every fan who wants to drink her bathwater. As MJ, the one-named Zendaya continues a good impression of miffed, off-kilter appeal. She uses the defense of a good offense, which is the shield of every pretty and intelligent 16-year-old. But the dialogue reiterates the best moments in Spider-Man: Homecoming. She should have more eyerolls and less talk. To be fair, she endures no hair-ribboning—nothing like the making over of the odd girl Ally Sheedy in The Breakfast Club, no story of personal tragedy that explains her taste for the morbid. If a girl has a thing for Spider-Man, it follows that she’d be interested in spiders, snakes and other dark materials. Spider-Man: Far From Home gives MJ even more agency during a final careen through Manhattan. It’s not a girl’s lyrical ride on a superhero’s powerful shoulder, as it was in 2002, but a terrifying trip MJ vows never to make again. To his credit, director Jon Watts takes the odd route whenever possible; he basks in the fun of hanging with teen pedants smart enough to tell a spear from a halberd. Sometimes it seems Watts has an altar somewhere with a DVD collection of Freaks and Geeks on it, surrounded by candles and incense. Still, there’s relevance to burn in Spider-Man: Far From Home’s payoff in villainy that deals in distraction and deepfakery, with arsonists playing firemen, and smoke and mirrors.

The Beatles hit a hapless small-town guitarist like a meteor.

Cover Versions BACK IN HIS Trainspotting days, Danny Boyle might have agreed with The Clash: “Phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust. As the older, richer film director of Yesterday, he’s venerating the dusty mummy. Audiences accept that a big purple extraterrestrial bugger can snap his fingers and evaporate half the universe. They shouldn’t balk at Yesterday’s premise: all the electricity in the world winks off for about 10 seconds and when the lights come back on, all the world’s knowledge of The Beatles has evaporated, except in the mind of Jack (Himesh Patel), an unsuccessful guitar player and warehouse stocker in a placid Suffolk seaside town. He uses his memories to go straight to the top, with the help of Suffolk singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran himself. But with success comes etc. (Representing the etc: mean Los Angeles music industry type Kate McKinnon, who never slips this film’s leash). It’d be interesting to see Richard Curtis’ Black Mirror-style script in less moist hands (Edgar Wright?)—someone who could have livened up the blocked romance. In a romcom, the obstacles Yesterday under the feet of a pair of lovers should make it seem like they’re dancing. But the interference here between Jack PG-13; 116 Mins. and sweet, loyal Ellie (pretty Lily James, a softer-chinned Valleywide Keira Knightley) is more like having the filmmakers playing Donkey Kong and rolling barrels at their ankles. The charm of the premise is twofold. First, the fantasy of inheriting a trove of music to play as one’s own creation, while being gnawed by the special shame of the plagiarist. Second is the fantasy of hearing all those deathless songs for the first time. Before Jack becomes a star, Yesterday has fun with the latter idea. He’s at the piano in his family’s parlor, getting interrupted by chiming doorbells as he tries to lay the world premiere of “Let It Be on his parents. (“Leave It Be? his dad wonders). Also fun is Jack’s quick excursion to Liverpool to help him remember the lyrics he’s supposed to sing; he tours such landmarks as the demolished Strawberry Field orphanage, and the boardedup shop on Penny Lane where the barber used to shave another coostumer. One effectively sentimental sequence: Jack’s meeting with a pair of middleagers who somehow didn’t have their memories wiped; one is clutching a toy yellow submarine as a calling card. If Yesterday is a sweet movie, it’s also a torpid one, with one bit of info per scene direction. Boyle gets stuck in the details—for example, business about the teeth that Jack had knocked out in an accident. Is this maybe a reference to the days when characters in British comedies had fewer teeth and more bite? —Richard von Busack

Mix Masters Lyrics Born and Cutso make for a funky, lively blend on ‘Rapp Nite’ BY NICK VERONIN

T

OM SHIMURA apologizes for losing the thread as he weaves through heavy traffic. The 46-year-old rapper and producer is speaking over his car’s Bluetooth speaker system. It’s Pride weekend, and he’s just trying to knock out this interview on the way to his next engagement.

“It’s been a busy couple of years,” the man better known as Lyrics Born says. Indeed. Last year, the East Bay emcee

reissued two albums from his back catalog—2003’s Later That Day and a 20-year anniversary deluxe edition of The Muzapper Mixes, which he recorded as one half of Latyrx, a collaboration with Lateef the Truthspeaker. In 2018, LB also released his fifth LP as a solo artist, Quite A Life. That same year saw the theatrical release of Boots Riley’s fantastical and comedic social commentary film, Sorry To Bother You. The movie, which garnered critical acclaim, was based and filmed in Oakland. Shimura had a small part. Then there’s all the voice acting— one of many entertainment industry side hustles he has picked up over the

years. “I work incredibly hard,” Lyrics Born says. In a region that’s as hard on creatives as the Bay Area, he has to. And he’s not the only one. Lyrics Born dropped his latest effort, Rapp Nite, just last week. It is a collaboration with San Jose’s very own Paolo Bello, a.k.a. Cutso, who also knows a thing or two about putting in work. Known for his prowess on the decks and behind the boards, Cutso is an integral member of local DJ and production crew The Bangerz. He’s been spinning at house parties and clubs for 20 years; he serves as one of three co-hosts on Wild 94.9’s weekly Rebel Pop Radio program; and over the past decade he has accumulated an arsenal of beats that he has only recently begun to unleash in the form of solo projects, such as 2017’s threetrack Girls EP When They See Me. Rapp Nite stands as a testament to the depth of both artists. For Lyrics Born, the set demonstrates his ability and his desire to step out of his comfort zone. I’m always looking for ways to get outside of myself.”

BETTER TOGETHER East Bay emcee and San Jose producer Cutso team up for ‘Rapp Nite.’

For Cutso, the collection is a calling card. Even though he is pushing 40, Bello says he still feels like a tenderfoot. “This is sort of my debut as a producer, as an artist.” Funky, eclectic and fun, Rapp Nite plays like the best kind of bender—a blur of neon synths, ecstatic drums and squiggly bass that resolves in a pile of empty premium vodka bottles, an overflowing ashtray and zero regrets… well, at least none serious enough to send one looking for the nearest group meeting. Some of the best lines on this album are all about delivery rather than lyrical dexterity. “I killed that scotch then refilled that scotch,” LB rhymes on “Hit Number One”—“like I’m wearing a kilt in this ’iotch.” And the simplicity of the chorus only underscores its self-assured swagger: “I don’t do shit that I’ve already done,” Shimura explains in his blunted croak. “Except hit number one.” The beat struts about with the confidence of rockstar as bits of overdriven electric guitar are clipped into jagged tatters and reassembled in a fuzzy mosaic. As the track fades out, it becomes easier to hear that the steady four-count hand claps are actually percussive, muted guitar strokes. The harmonic overtones of the metal strings ring out faintly and the whooshing, heavily Cutso affected intro of “Are You Experienced” comes to mind as Cutso seamlessly merges the East Side Boyz and Jimi Hendrix. Shimura makes a point of praising Bello’s touch, noting that Cutso carefully selected the beats on Rapp Nite to jibe with the LB vibe. “That’s the sign of a real producer,” Shimura says. “That’s the sign of a guy who really understands music.”

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): When the universe began

13.8 billion years ago, there were only four elements: mostly hydrogen and helium, plus tiny amounts of lithium and beryllium. Now there are 118 elements, including five that are key components of your body: oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus. All of those were created by nuclear reactions blazing on the insides of stars that later died. So it's literally true to say that much of your flesh and blood and bones and nerves originated at the hearts of stars. I invite you to meditate on that amazing fact. It's a favorable time to muse on your origins and your ancestry, to ruminate about all the events that led to you being here today—including more recent decades, as well as the past 13.8 billion years.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Most American women couldn't vote until a hundred years ago. Women in Japan, France and Italy couldn't vote until the 1940s. Universal suffrage has been a fundamental change in how society is structured. Similarly, same-sex marriage was opposed by vast majorities in most countries until 15 years ago, but has since become widely accepted. African American slavery lasted for hundreds of years before being delegitimized all over the Western world in the 19th century. Brazil, which hosted 40 percent of all kidnapped Africans, didn't free its slaves until 1888. What would be the equivalent of such revolutionary transformations in your own personal life? According to my reading of the astrological omens, you have the power to make that happen during the next 12 months. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Gemini musician Paul Weller is famous in the UK, though not so much elsewhere. According to the BBC, he is one of Britain's "most revered music writers and performers." To which I say: revered, maybe, but mentally healthy? Not so much. He bragged that he broke up his marriage with his wife Dee C. Lee because "things were going too well, we were too happy, too comfortable, everything seemed too nice." He was afraid that "as a writer and an artist, I might lose my edge." Don't you dare allow yourself to get infected with that perverse way of thinking, my dear Gemini. Please capitalize on your current comfort and happiness. Use them to build your strength and resilience for the months and years to come. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Cancerian voice actor

Tom Kenny has played the roles of over 1,500 cartoon characters, including SpongeBob SquarePants, Spyro the Dragon, Jake Spidermonkey, Commander Peepers and Doctor Octopus. I propose that we make him your role model in the coming weeks. It will be a favorable time for you to show your versatility, to demonstrate how multifaceted you can be, to express various sides of your soulful personality.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Leo author Donald Miller

reminds us that fear can have two very different purposes. On the one hand, it may be "a guide to keep us safe," alerting us to situations that could be dangerous or abusive. On the other hand, fear may work as "a manipulative emotion that can trick us into living a boring life." After studying your astrological indicators for the coming weeks, Leo, I have come to the conclusion that fear may serve both of those functions for you. Your challenge will be to discern between them, to know which situations are genuinely risky and which situations are daunting but promising. Here's a hint that might help: Trust your gut feelings more than your swirling fantasies.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Why do flocks of geese

fly in a V-formation? Because to do so enhances the collective efficiency of their travel. Each bird generates a current that supports the bird behind it. Let's make this phenomenon one of your power metaphors for the coming weeks. What would be the equivalent strategy for you and your tribe or group as you seek to make your collaborative efforts more dynamic and productive? Unforeseen help will augment any actions you take in this regard.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): "A conversation is a dialogue, not a monologue," mused Libra author Truman Capote. "That's why there are so few good conversations: Due to scarcity, two intelligent talkers seldom meet." That cynical formulation

By ROB BREZSNY week of July 3

has more than a few grains of truth in it, I must admit. But I'm pleased to tell you that I suspect your experience in the coming weeks will be an exception to Capote's rule. I think you have the potential to embark on a virtual binge of rich discussion and intriguing interplay with people who stimulate and educate and entertain you. Rise to the challenge!

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In accordance with

astrological rhythms, you are authorized to make the following declarations in the next two weeks: 1. "I refuse to participate further in this situation on the grounds that it might impinge on the expansiveness of my imagination." 2. "I abstain from dealing with your skepticism on the grounds that doing so might discourage the flights of my imagination." 3. "I reject these ideas, theories and beliefs on the grounds that they might pinch, squash or deflate my imagination." What I'm trying to tell you, Scorpio, is that it's crucial for you to emancipate your imagination and authorize it to play uninhibitedly in the frontiers of possibilities.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Dear Sagittarius: I

invite you to make a copy of the testimonial below and give it to anyone who is in a position to support your Noble Experiment. "To Whom It May Concern: I endorse this Soulful Sagittarius for the roles of monster-tamer, fun-locator, boredom-transcender, elation-inciter and mountaintop visionary. This adroit explorer is endowed with charming zeal, disarming candor, and abundant generosity. If you need help in sparking your enthusiasm or galvanizing your drive to see the big picture, call on the expansive skills of this jaunty puzzle-solver."

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Life will conspire to

bring you a surge of love in the coming weeks—if you can handle it. Can you? Will you be able to deal adeptly with rumbling love and icy hot love and mostly sweet but also a bit sour love? Do you possess the resourcefulness and curiosity necessary to have fun with funny spiritual love and running-throughthe-labyrinth love and unexpectedly catalytic love? Are you open-minded and open-hearted enough to make the most of brilliant shadowy love and unruly sensitive love and toughly graceful love?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): I don't endlessly

champion the "no pain, no gain" theory of personal growth. My philosophy holds that we are at least as likely to learn valuable lessons from pleasurable and joyful experiences as we are from difficult and taxing struggles. Having said that, I also think it's true that our suffering may lead us to treasure if we know how to work with it. According to my assessment, the coming weeks will bring one such opening for you. To help you cultivate the proper spirit, keep in mind the teaching of Aquarian theologian and author Henri Nouwen. He said that life's gifts may be "hidden in the places that hurt most."

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The Japanese word

"wabi-sabi" refers to an interesting or evocative imperfection in a work of art that makes it more beautiful than if it were merely perfect. "Duende" is a Spanish word referring to a work of art that gives its viewers the chills because it's so emotionally rich and unpredictably soulful. In the coming weeks, I think that you yourself will be a work of art with an abundance of these qualities. Your wabi-sabi will give you the power to free yourself from the oppressive pressures of seeking too much precision and purity. Your duende can give you the courage you need to go further than you've ever dared in your quest for the love you really want.

Homework: "Know thyself—or else! Follow your dreams—or else!" Please comment. Truthrooster@gmail.com.
