A gunman killed two employees of the Ford Store Morgan Hill before taking his own life at the Condit Road auto dealership Tuesday night, according to Morgan Hill Police.

It was the second multiple murder-suicide to rock the region in two days; five people died in San Jose just two days earlier in one of that city’s worst domestic violence incidents.

Ford Store at 6:07pm June 25 after receiving a call reporting a shooting, police said. Upon arrival, police located a dead male on the ground with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a handgun by his side.

Ford Store staff directed officers inside the dealership, where police located two employees on the floor with apparent gunshot wounds, police said. The victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not released

the names of the suspect or victims, or the motive or other circumstances surrounding the shooting. Multiple news sources reported the suspect was a former employee of the ➝ Three dead, 2

Morgan Hill Police received a tip late last year that turned into a nationwide investigation into the production and sharing of child pornography. As of this week, the

investigation has implicated 18 people, according to authorities.

Two suspects identified by police from the initial tip—both South County residents—are accused of producing child pornography by sexually assaulting children on camera, and sharing the images with other alleged criminals.

In hopes of identifying some of the victims found in illegal images and videos uncovered by recent search warrants related to the multi-state investigation, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office June 21 released the name and booking photo of one of the suspects who lives in San Jose.

That suspect, Graham Bessermin, 38, has worked closely with children throughout the region, from Santa Cruz to San Francisco, according to the DA's office.

Kenney. Local officers identified Bessermin as the recipient of child pornography material after spending the previous months investigating a tip received in November 2018.

messaging platforms to share explicit videos and images depicting themselves with child victims, which the two suspects had produced.

Gutierrez and Rinehart were charged in January with felony counts of possession of child pornography and sexual acts with a child younger than 10, according to court records. Both are in jail custody with no bail.

Norman explained that criminals involved in child pornography often share the illegal images and videos with others, typically through the internet. This case is not an exception, and has thus far sparked the investigation of 18 people nationwide who have sent or received child pornography from the two initial suspects. Norman thinks that number will grow as law enforcement agencies in other jurisdictions continue to investigate.

“It was a very detailed and lengthy investigation,” Norman said. “It gets to a point where you start getting into a multistate, nationwide kind of spider's web because all these (suspects) share their media, and once they do that it's a crime.”

He further explained that possession, sharing, production and downloading of child pornography are each separate crimes, according to the state penal code.

When asked how many victims are involved in the multi-suspect investigation so far, Norman said, "There's a lot." He said police are in the process of identifying victims in the related child pornography images, and authorities hope that releasing Bessermin's name, photo and background details will help lead to those identifications.

Norman praised Det. Woodrow for his determination and patience in following through with the investigation for six months and procuring information that identified multiple suspects accused of harming children.

“Chris is a very tenacious detective who went above and beyond,” Norman said. “He went to the DA, and reached out to the specific crime units involved in these outside jurisdictions to hand them the investigation on a platter.”

"The City of Morgan Hill and the Morgan Hill Police Department offer our sincere condolences to the families of the victims in this tragic incident," MHPD said in a statement.

MHPD will be working with the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and Coroner's Office during the investigation.

The Ford Store shooting is the first homicide reported in Morgan Hill this year. The last suspected homicide in Morgan Hill took place July 3, 2018, when Sunnyvale resident Curtis Stapleton was found dead outside his workplace on Concord Circle.

Car enthusiasts gathered at the first-ever Coyote Creek Concours d’Elegance on June 23 to check out more than 200 rare and collector’s vehicles from various eras. Held on the 18th hole of the Coyote Creek Golf Club, the Concours made its debut in Morgan Hill after a number of years in Alameda.

Featured marques, or make of vehicle, at the event were Corvette and Ferrari. A slew of other classes joined these cars, including American sports cars, Japanese cars, cars of Morgan Hill/Gilroy and many others. Cars were judged by class, and judges scrutinized every detail from tires to roof and everything in between. The Coyote Creek Concours will be donating a portion of the proceeds to Operation Freedom Paws, a San Martin-based non-profit that pairs shelter dogs with veterans and other people experiencing physical or psychological disabilities. Suicide rate in county continues to drop SANTA CLARA COUNTY BUCKS NATIONAL TRENDS Staff Report

The suicide rate in Santa Clara County dropped for the third consecutive year in 2017, federal health officials reported.

The decline in county suicides for the most recent reported year, to 6.95 suicides per 100,000 people in 2017, is in contrast to national suicide rates, which increased for the third straight year, according to the annual report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Santa Clara County, the suicide rate In 2016 the rate was 6.98 per 100,000 people; in 2015, the rate was 7.77 deaths per 100,000 people. The rates of suicide deaths are nearly half the national rate, the CDC reported.

Across the U.S., the suicide rate rose in 2017 to 14 suicides per 100,000 people, compared to 13 in 2016 and 13.3 in in 2015.

The California rate, while also lower than the national rate, remains higher than in Santa Clara County, and has increased since 2015. The 2017 California suicide rate was 10.5 suicides per 100,000 people; the same rate of 10.5 per 100,000 people in

2016 and 10.3 per 100,000 people in 2015, according to the county.

Suicide rates have been rising in nearly every state, according to the federal agency.

In 2016, nearly 45,000 Americans age 10 or older died by suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death and is one of just three leading causes that are on the rise.

In 2017, a CDC report found that from 2003 to 2015, Morgan Hill had the second-highest youth suicide rate among cities in Santa Clara County, just behind Palo Alto. During that period, the “crude suicide rate” among youth in Morgan Hill was 12.7

percent, according to the 2017 report.

Local public health professionals noted that the 2017 CDC prompted new and/or strengthened community partnerships to address youth suicide. A series of meetings with community members, educators, law enforcement and behavioral health experts have been held, and local activities took place in Palo Alto and Morgan Hill. Countywide activities included expanding school linked services, implementing a suicide prevention campaign aimed at youth and establishing the Crisis Text Line.

Suicide is rarely caused

by a single factor, say public health experts.

Although suicide prevention efforts largely focus on identifying and providing treatment for people with mental health conditions, Santa Clara County’s Behavioral Health Services Department has focused on partnerships and other activities to promote suicide prevention: School District Partnerships with seven Santa Clara County school districts developed suicide prevention and crisis response policies. Additionally, they planned training for teachers and school staff and provided crisis response protocols and policies.

Safe Storage of Guns ordinances were passed in the cities of San Jose, Morgan Hill, Saratoga and Sunnyvale.

Mobile Crisis Response Teams were expanded to the general public to increase the response to mental health emergencies in our community. Residents can now call 1-800-704-0900 and select option 2 to request a Mobile Crisis Response Team response.

Crisis Text Line was established.

Residents can now text RENEW to 741741. A digital and social media campaign is being conducted to raise awareness about the new text line.

T

he state budget passed by the California Legislature included funding to expand MediCal eligibility to undocumented residents under the age of 26.

The expansion is projected to aid 90,000 young adults who are living at the brink of poverty, earning less than $16,395 per year in the state.

Though a step in the right direction, passing this measure in place of other more expansive bills introduced this session means that many undocumented immigrants who desperately need MediCal insurance will miss out. And that will mean further suffering for some of our state’s most vulnerable people.

Based on my interviews with over 50 undocumented immigrants in the Bay Area, I’ve heard troubling story after story of people who suffer on a daily basis because they lack health insurance. Their harrowing tales are eyeopening and disturbing.

Take Manuel, for example, a 57-year-old day laborer who immigrated to Oakland from Mexico over 20 years ago. Manuel migrated to United States in his early 20s to help provide for his new family.

For two decades, Manuel has stood on street corners in Oakland waiting for prospective employers to come by and ask for help with construction, landscaping or painting projects. He has shared apartments with several men, sleeping on floors and even closets, so he can afford rent and, in the early years, support his loved ones in Mexico.

Not a young man anymore, Manuel lives with chronic pain that he cannot afford to have treated. About five years ago, Manuel had a work accident that left him with a broken arm that never fully healed.

To this day, he cannot lift his arm past his shoulder, a heavy burden for him as a day laborer. The pain is there, too. But because Manuel has to financially sustain himself, he pushes through it every day and takes whatever jobs he can to pay his rent and meals. Eating,

too, has become more difficult lately because he has severe, unrelenting pain in his right molar.

But when Manuel went to a low-cost health clinic he heard about to get treatment, he was told he had to become a member before he would be seen. Given his limited literacy in English and Spanish and the lack of any instructions, he couldn’t navigate the process.

Finally, Manuel was told that even if he became a member, he would have to wait months to see a dentist. With no other option for affordable dental care, he bears extreme pain on a daily basis.

Manuel wasn’t the only person I spoke to who had to deal with ongoing pain. There were others who suffered the physical aftershocks of work accidents, did not have a healthcare provider to go to when they became sick or injured, or who endured chronic pain to avoid the cost of seeing a doctor. Most also did not know where to go for mental health services.

All of the people I spoke to were over age 26, which makes them ineligible for health benefits, even under the new MediCal expansion. They suffer from deteriorating health conditions that negatively impact them as workers, parents, family members and friends.

Undocumented workers comprise 9 percent of California’s labor force and contribute $3 billion in state and local taxes each year.

Despite all they contribute, 44 percent of undocumented adults have no usual source of care. Of those who are low-income, 90 percent of them do not have health insurance.

They work some of the most physically arduous jobs, including landscaping, construction, restaurant work, and taking care of children and seniors. But if their health is compromised, they have few places to go.

While the state’s budget helps young undocumented immigrants, it falls far short of Gov. Newsom’s “California for all” campaign. After all, the majority of the state’s undocumented population is not included.

When Jesse Ventura was governor of Minnesota, he made it legal to do whatever with fireworks. I was visiting for Independence Day and we went to our town for the fireworks.

OMG! Everyone was shooting off everything everywhere! The police were putting on the radio and TV they were only responding to injuries, so if no one was bleeding, please don't call.

And please, everyone, go home where it's safe.

They were out with bullhorns and fire trucks telling the crowd to go home.

Bottle rockets everywhere, and you could barely see through the smoke or breath.

People were running and screaming. It was the worst. So that is one reason to let the city do nice fireworks for us and enjoy.

I’m confused about why they won’t release the names of the suspects arrested in MH and San Martin? They released the name of the piece of garbage in San Jose in the hopes that more victims will come forward. So why wouldn’t they do that for these other two??

evening, at 7pm, the Family Music Festival will take place in downtown Morgan Hill at Third Street and Monterey Road.

The July 4 Independence Day holiday will kick off early in the morning with an 8am 5K Freedom Run, beginning at City Hall, 17575 Peak Ave. Later, the Fourth of July parade and the Car Cruise N' Show will begin at 9:30am through downtown Morgan Hill. The route for the parade and cruise will be along Monterey Road, West Main Avenue, West Dunne Avenue and Peak Avenue.

To top off the holiday celebrations, the

Morgan Hill fireworks show will take place at the city’s Outdoor Sports Center at 16500 Condit Road at 9:30pm. Live entertainment, games and concessions will begin at the same venue before fireworks at 5pm.

There will be several street closures throughout the two days. On July 3 starting at noon, Monterey Road between East Dunne and Main Avenue will be closed. There will also be partial closures on July 3 on the East and West side of Monterey Road. See the info box for the full list of street closures over the two days.

Everyone enjoys a good fireworks show as part of their traditional Fourth of July celebrations, but Morgan Hill police are warning residents that there will be only one sanctioned, permitted fireworks show for the upcoming holiday. All other fireworks are illegal in the city limits, and police and fire officials have adopted a zero tolerance policy toward the ignition, sale and possession of the incendiary devices.

Furthermore, the city will impose triple the usual fines for violations of Morgan Hill's fireworks ordinance July 1-7, according to police. That means the first violation of use or possession of fireworks in the city limits can result in a $300 fine for the violator; the second violation will cost a $600 ticket, and a third violation can result in a $1,500 fine.

“Fireworks have resulted in brush fires, damaged homes, missing pets and unnecessary injuries,” reads a press release from the Morgan Hill Police Department. “Our surrounding hills are very dry, and every illegal firework poses a significant threat to the safety of our community.”

The City of Morgan Hill will partner local non-profit Independence Day Celebrations Inc. to produce a free fireworks show the night of July 4 at the Outdoor Sports Center on Condit Road. The show, including prefireworks entertainment, is scheduled for 5-10pm.

All other fireworks, including “safe and sane” pyrotechnics purchased in other cities, are illegal in Morgan Hill, police said.

New Britton to open in fall BOBCATS TO GAIN MODERN, UPGRADED CAMPUS Scott Forstner Reporter

A glimpse out of the second-story classroom window at the new Britton Middle School offers students a stunning view of El Toro Mountain to the west.

It’s a stark contrast to the poorly lit, dingy classroom spaces that Bobcat staff and students had grown accustomed to— especially over the last two decades—at the middle school campus, which was originally built as Live Oak High School in 1940.

The first phase of the nearly $50 million modernization project at one of the oldest campuses within Morgan Hill Unified School District offers much more than picturesque views and will be ready for the start of the 2019-20 school year, according to district officials.

Casino Fajardo, a Britton alumnus and the district’s director of construction, has helped spearhead the transformation of nearly every MHUSD site through the use of the $198 million Measure G capital improvements bond. He recently gave the Times an exclusive tour of the new additions to campus as construction workers continue to beautify the 22-acre site on the northwestern edge of downtown Morgan Hill,

along Monterey Road and Hale Avenue between Central Avenue and Keystone Road.

With a $49,078,440 board-approved design/ build budget, “this will roughly take care of half of the overall identified needs in our Facilities Master Plan assessment for the campus,” Fajardo said. The scope of work includes replacing 30 existing classrooms, built circa 1959-1971, with new learning spaces.

“All classrooms have spacious, state-of-the-art features that support our educational program and have a wonderful view of El Toro Mountain,” said Fajardo, gleaming with pride as he broke down all the bells and whistles that are incorporated into the project design.

For the upcoming school year, all students will be predominantly housed in the two main classroom structures for core classes such as English and mathematics, with the exception of the elective courses and science classrooms. The new science building is expected to break ground this summer and be ready for move-in for the 202021 school year.

“The admin [building] and Student Union designs are now progressing into the design development phase as we have received the last preliminary analysis from the Division of State Architect,” Fajardo said.

floors with six classrooms per floor and attached ancillary spaces. For now, there are single-occupancy restrooms for students and staff, but ultimately the campus restrooms will be housed in the science building and the student union, which is starting its design. Outdoor staircases are covered, and there are large balcony areas for potential use by the staff for outdoor teaching. There are also quads specific to each “learning neighborhood,” which, Fajardo explained, allow opportunities for collaboration between student peers during breaks and for staff to teach outside of their normal class.

“There are so many exciting features to recount, but the fact that these buildings will be LEED certified by the US Green Building Council sums up the achievement of the design and the end product,” Fajardo said. “There will be plenty of natural daylight with views of the lush landscape, sustainable building materials utilized throughout, high indoor air quality and acoustically sound spaces.”

Each classroom will be equipped with 70-inch, high-definition monitors and rolling white boards. “My planning team worked with site staff and students to select

comfortable furniture that is both engaging and flexible,” Fajardo added. The furniture is expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks. There are dampers embedded in the wall that mitigate fresh air in the classrooms and keep the room temperatures cool even when it's hot outside. Teachers and staff will use key fobs to open and lock classrooms, and security cameras have been installed throughout the new campus facilities.

In all, the project will result in more than 80,000 square feet of new learning spaces. A sloped knoll area with shade structures will allow students to eat lunch and study outdoors

as well. The Britton gymnasium (on Keystone) and auditorium (on Monterey at Central)—as well as other older buildings not slated for demolition—will get a fresh coat of paint to match the newer structures. The administration building and a portion of the next wing are slated for demolition.

The next phase of modernization includes the new student union building on the former rundown tennis courts at the corner of Keystone and Monterey.

Additionally, a new parking lot and drop-off/pickup area along Central will replace the existing lot, helping to ease congestion before and after school.

Lang said that while the city is mainly looking for a company to take over the dark fiber lease, it would be even more desirable if a provider would also be willing to increase internet speeds in underserved areas of the city.

Dark fiber is the broadband connection for all city facilities. For example, it is a telecommunication network that connects the city government and the police department. The

current lease is between the city of Morgan Hill and Charter Communications, set to end in 2022.

The city is looking for a provider to take over that lease, while also exploring opportunities for a provider that could work with the city to grow broadband services in Morgan Hill.

Lang told the Times that the city is giving incentive to providers by “allowing them to put those antennas on our facilities as a way to hopefully open up or provide an incentive for them to provide service to Morgan Hill.”

Proposals are due July 19 and the request said the city is looking for “a written

submittal that outlines the experience and capabilities of the proposer as it relates to meeting to goals of this RFP. Proposers should be able to outline demonstrated experience delivering high-speed broadband to communities similar to Morgan Hill.”

Lang said these kind of public/private partnerships are difficult and could only happen if providers were interested, and it is possible that the RFP will not produce any responses. He said that while the city has been good about providing wireless connectivity in public spaces, this kind of partnership would be “in a much bigger scope and opportunity.”

“The Cali Lax All Stars and a team from Denver are the only U.S. teams that were invited to play in this tournament,” he said. “In August this same Cali Lax team will play in the Box Lacrosse National Finals in Huntington Beach.”

Canada Day is an indoor lacrosse tournament, which differs from the outdoor game in a couple of different aspects, most notably the speed and precision of the game.

“Box lacrosse is faster and a more intense, tight space kind of game,” Brad said.

Nolan, who broke down his time spent playing the indoor to the outdoor game as 60 percent outdoors and 40 percent indoors, said the biggest adjustment has to do with stick equipment.

“The biggest adjustment with indoors is I have to play with a shorter stick, and you need a lot better stick work skills,” he said.

Five local youth lacrosse players are headed to Calgary to play Canada’s national summer sport—and no, it’s not ice hockey. It’s actually lacrosse (ice hockey is designated as Canada’s national winter sport). Brothers Luke and Jake Richey and brothers Nolan, Ben and Hudson Ledwith all earned spots to play for the Cali Lax All Stars in the prestigious Canada Day box lacrosse tournament from June 30 to July 2.

“I would say I’m really excited, but at the same time a little nervous,” Nolan said. “The Canadians are really good so I’m looking forward to seeing how aggressive they are and comparing myself to the best.”

Ben, 13, broke his tibia and fibula five weeks ago and won’t be able to play in the tournament, but he is traveling with his brothers to Calgary. Nolan and Luke are 13 years old and will play in the Bantam Division, while Jake and Hudson are 7 years old and will play in the Peewee Division. Ben and Nolan are incoming eighth graders at Martin Murphy, Luke is

an incoming eighth grader at Charter School of Morgan Hill, while Hudson (Nordstrom Elementary) and Jake (Charter School) are both incoming second graders.

Brad Ledwith, who is the father of Ben, Nolan and Hudson and the founder of the South County Outlaws youth lacrosse program, said it’s an honor that the five boys all earned trips to play in Canada Day, which has been around for 43 years.

IT’S GAME TIME Luke Richey, Jake Richey, Hudson Ledwith, Nolan Ledwith and Ben Ledwith play locally for the South County Outlaws and for the Cali Lax All Star team that is headed to play in Canada Day. in Canada is (officiated) looser, meaning they let a lot of debatable calls go. Whereas in California the refs are strict about pushes, so it’ll be interesting to see the difference.”

Nolan said being a lefthander is a big plus in lacrosse.

“Our coach tells the lefties we’re the VIPs in lacrosse,” he said.

“Since we want the stick to be toward the inside of the field and the lefties play the right side of

the field, it makes it much easier to go to the right side when you’re left-handed. It changes the game. I like the physicality of the game, and I’m fired up and ready to go.”

Difference in game

The indoor lacrosse game requires a player to move without the ball in an ultra-efficient way since space is relatively tight.

That will help a player excel that

much more once they get to the outdoor game. Brad said the kids have gotten experience playing indoors at the Silver Creek Sports Complex, which houses 10 indoor rinks. Shaydon Smith, who is the president of the Cali Lax All Stars, started the program in 2006, box lacrosse’s first foray on the West Coast. All told, nine teams from the program will be competing in different divisions in Canada Day.

M

aximiliano Guzman Chavarria, “Max”, took his last breath on June 22, 2019, at the admirable age of 97, due to natural causes. Born in Coahuila, Mexico, he met his beloved wife Pilar, to whom he was happily married to for 70 years. She passed away in 2013. Max and Pilar made the journey to the United States in 1945, landing in Harlingen, Texas; traveling with the first eight children. They left Texas in 1959, moved to Huron, Ca then to Gilroy, Ca in 1961. They eventually settled in Aromas, where Max lived out the rest of his life.

It was in California where their youngest, three children were born.

Max was a hard worker all his life and always ensured to provide for his family. He worked in the Agricultural field for many years; becoming a share crop owner in the Central Valley and Central Coast areas. Max is preceded in death by his wife, his sons; Lorenzo and Robert Chavarria, and 1 great-great grandchild. He is survived by his children; Aurora, Yolanda, Johnny (Rosa), Richard, Nellie, Irma, Max (Maria), David (Barbara), Danny (Martha), and Dora, as well as 31 grandchildren and 51 greatgrandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel on Friday June 28, 2019 from 5-9pm with the funeral service starting at 7 pm. A morning service will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, the following day, on Saturday June 29, 2019 from 10 am- 12 pm. Burial to follow at 1pm at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Prunedale, Ca. Mehl’s Colonial Chapel was entrusted the arrangements.

JACK BUTLER MAY 21,1927 - JUNE 21, 2019 Jack Butler, 92, of Los Banos was a Ranger for the Department of Forestry in Hollister for many years and retired in 1983. Jack is survived by his wife Nancy, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Melody was born in DC on March 3, 1954. She is survived by: her husband of 46 years Gary, her daughter Stacey, son Dwayne and grandchildren, Haley, Mackenzie, Madison, Jordan, Jaxson, Megan and sisters Jackie and Linda. She was also very loved by those who knew her from The District Theater.

Melody is preceded in death by her parents Clarence and Louise.
