Brian Light was hailed as a hero who saved lives before losing his own when a gunman opened fire at The Ford Store Morgan Hill June 25. Xavier Souto was known as a friendly, outgoing family man who was deeply loved as a father, husband and son.

Light and Souto died when one of their own colleagues shot them in a workplace dispute at The Ford Store on Condit Road. Less than 24 hours after the shooting, staff at the Ford Store set up a fundraising website for the families of Light and Souto. As a testament to the impact the tragedy has had on the region, and the love and respect that Light and Souto commanded before their deaths, the site at gofundme.com had raised

who rarely welcomed visitors to his home. Leet, who had worked at The Ford Store Morgan Hill for about eight years, had no criminal history. He owned “well over a dozen firearms,” including two he brought into the Condit Road auto dealership the evening of June 25, according to police. He had acquired all of the firearms legally, they said. In the days after the June 25 tragedy, Morgan Hill police served search warrants on ➝ Shooting , 8

More than a week after a shooting at The Ford Store Morgan Hill left three of the auto dealership’s employees dead, police continue to search for any remaining clues to the gunman’s motive. They said they are convinced the shooter acted without premeditation after he was fired from his job a few hours earlier on June 25. At the same time, public

officials and community members continue to search for the words to console their neighbors and constituents in the aftermath of the bloodiest incident of workplace violence in the city's history. Steven Leet, 60, who shot Brian Light and Xavier Souto to death before killing himself, was, by all known accounts, a quiet individual who didn’t interact much with those around him, according to police. Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Bill Norman said Leet's neighbors on Russo Drive in San Jose described him as a loner

instantly. Light briefly struggled with the gunman before he was shot several times himself. This struggle allowed about 35 customers and colleagues inside The Ford Store the time they needed to run to safety as gunshots rang out in the building, Police Chief David Swing said. "Brian's actions here are nothing short of heroic," Swing said. "It is likely that through those actions, he prevented us having additional victims at the scene."

Police Sgt. Bill Norman added that video surveillance from The Ford Store "clearly" shows customers and employees fleeing the building before the gunman exited the office where he shot Light and Souto. "Without that (struggle), he would have been right on top of a lot of people," Norman said. Souto, 38, also of San Jose, had worked at the auto dealership since 2012, Swing said. The family man started out as a parts counter clerk and was later promoted to his most recent position.

"Xavier leaves behind a wife and two sons," said Swing. "Xavier was known for his love of his family, both immediate and extended family, and for the love of his work." The GoFundMe memorial page for the victims states that Souto was the main provider for his family. Light started working at The Ford Store Morgan Hill in 2018. He was recruited to work there after a career of more than 30 years in the automobile industry. The gofundme page says Light

was a mentor to Souto and countless other colleagues through the years. "He was known for his mentoring ability, and for his love of helping others," Swing said at the June 26 press conference at Morgan Hill police station. "That's why he was brought to The Ford Store—because he wanted to train the next generation, because he found true purpose in his work." The GoFundMe memorial page for Souto and Light was started by The Ford Store Morgan Hill General

Manager and Vice President Ashley Valletta. The fundraising goal is $500,000. The Ford Store was closed June 26, but reopened the following day. The morning of June 26, dealership President

Tim Paulus said in a statement, "We are devastated by this terrible loss. Thank you to the Morgan Hill community, (which) has come together with us during this extremely difficult time."

Different perspectives on incident

Britton Middle School teacher and South County Basketball Academy founder Jim Green has lived in Morgan Hill since August 1977. He bought his Ford Fusion from Ford Store Morgan Hill. “As much as we would rather not admit it, senseless workplace killings and school shootings have no geographic boundaries. They’re oblivious to ZIP codes and demographics,” Green said. “It’s just devastating. Personally, I think there should be equal parts emphasis on mental health as gun control.” News of a workplace shooting at the local auto dealership did not come as a surprise to Gilroy resident Joe Luna, who worked as an auto technician at two different BMW dealerships over an eight-year span. He said car dealerships are “high-stress environments, especially for auto technicians.” “I could totally see this taking place. Absolutely. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner,” said Luna, who left the industry because of “infighting among technicians to get the most profitable jobs.” Morgan Hill parent Maria Bruhns said the first thing she did upon hearing the tragic news was look for names to see if the victims were anyone she knew from town since she’s been here since 1984. “I’m not really surprised because this is a typical American town, and unfortunately, this happens because we don’t have stronger gun laws,” said Bruhns, who attended Paradise Valley, Britton and Live Oak schools. “It’s weird that he just had a gun in his car and he decided (on) this course of action instead of just talking it out.”

As local police continue to piece together all that transpired leading to the tragic murder-suicide June 25 at the Ford Store Morgan Hill, the local community is left to wonder: Why did this happen? Were there any warning signs? Could it have been prevented? Erik Pedersen, an experienced psychologist with Morgan Hill Therapy, said he was not surprised by the news that a recently fired Ford Store employee fatally shot two of his supervisors and then turned the gun on himself. “Not surprised at all. There’s always context for this type of thing. My first thought was it must be employeerelated,” said Pedersen, who helps his patients cope with different kinds of challenges in their lives including those that arise from work stress. “This is one of the most stressful valleys to live in and work in.” Pedersen, without knowing suspect Steven Leet prior to the incident, assessed the circumstances that resulted in the deaths of three San Jose men who worked at the Ford Store on Condit Road in Morgan Hill. “We are dealing with a man who was deeply unstable, so any kind of rejection for an unstable person can be a huge ego threat and they’re going to retaliate,” Pedersen said of the 60-year-old Leet. “He was invalidated by what happened, and it invoked the most primitive survival instincts. ...‘How am I going to survive in this world if I can’t make a living?’” With nearly two decades of clinical work, Pedersen has evaluated thousands of patients for

various issues, including a case of a disgruntled employee who was stalking his former boss. He said men over age 50 who are divorced and have been through failed relationships tend to be more volatile. If a man has unresolved issues with a parent, he may transfer those feelings to a boss or authoritative figure. “My hunch is there is something deeper, something older and family-related and there was transference onto the boss. Without therapy, they can go unresolved for decades and then they act out at work,” said Pedersen. “There usually are warning signs. ...If a person is not taking feedback and criticism well and there is some longtime resentment, you need to get HR involved. Other times, however, it’s a long dormant beef which, in that case, you couldn’t see it coming.” Sandy Ortez, a Morgan Hill resident who works as a human resources business partner, is regularly communicating with employees as part of the hiring-firing process and helping build workplace comradery as well as work-life balance among staff. “When I heard it was a disgruntled employee, I thought there had to be other warning signs prior to him being fired that should’ve been addressed,” Ortez said. “If they didn’t acknowledge there was a problem and offer assistance, then that’s a problem.” Any workplace issues should be brought to human resources, added Ortez, who also pointed to the competitive, highstress nature of living in the Bay Area as a possible contributing factor. “With the increase in stress in the Bay Area, you have to be hyperaware of your employees and the people around you,” Ortez warned. “We do live in a highly stressful area, and it’s not going to get any better.”

Less than two days after a former employee shot and killed two managers and himself at the Ford Store Morgan Hill, the dealership reopened. A message on the Ford Store’s website said the business would reopen on June 27 with “limited staff.” “We cannot thank the Morgan Hill and surrounding communities enough for all your support during this extremely difficult time,” the message read. The Ford Store updated its message on June 28, saying, “We

are open to serve our community.” Grief counselors were on site for workers returning to the business on June 27. A makeshift memorial of flowers and candles was placed outside of the store. The dealership reopened during one of the busiest sales seasons of the year. The Ford Store held its “4th of July Sellathon” campaign during the days leading up to the Fourth of July, offering special discounts on a variety of models. In a statement, Ford Motor Company officials said they were “heartbroken” by the incident. “Our deepest sympathies go out to Morgan Hill Ford employees, their families and friends,” the statement read. “Ford will extend

all of its support to employees during this difficult time.” A Ford dealership in Chatom, Ala. offering a bible, an American flag and a shotgun with a purchase of a truck was forced to end the promotion following the shooting in Morgan Hill, according to an article by the Washington Post. Chatom Ford announced the end of the promotion on its Facebook page, saying Ford asked them to do so. “We were running a promotion celebrating this country’s independence,” the post read, adding that Ford Motor Company “manufacture(s) the products we are franchised to sell, so we are complying with their request.”

At 6:03pm June 25, the Morgan Hill Police Department received multiple reports of an active shooter at the Morgan Hill Ford Store. Officers were dispatched at 6:04pm and arrived on scene at 6:07pm. The first team of officers was directed to a person in the parking lot who was later determined to be the suspect, Steven Leet of San Jose. The second team was directed to the two victims, Brian Light and Xavier Souto, inside the business. Fire personnel pronounced the victims and suspect deceased on scene. Morgan Hill officers and Santa Clara County Sheriff ’s deputies searched the building and grounds for additional victims and suspects and found none. Morgan Hill crime scene investigators worked in partnership with the County Crime Lab and Sheriff ’s Office to collect evidence and document the scene. This thorough investigation lasted into the early morning hours of Wednesday, June 26. Detectives and officers from the Gilroy/ Morgan Hill Regional SWAT Team served a search warrant on the suspect’s house in San Jose early Wednesday morning and found no other evidence related to motive or pre-planning. It appears that this was a spontaneous action on the part of the suspect which resulted in the tragic loss of life for two men and the loss of fathers for two families. This was a tragic event for all involved and for the entire Morgan Hill community. We want to share that help is available for those in crisis at (800) 273-8255 or by texting CONNECT to 741741.

Re: 'Police Chief David Swing gives MHPD response to the shooting at the Ford Store in Morgan Hill (video)' A four-minute response! Incredible. Thank you for keeping Morgan hill safe Amany Ayoub

GUEST VIEW

n behalf of the City of Morgan Hill and the Morgan Hill City Council, we would like to express our sincere sympathy and condolences to all involved with and impacted by the tragic event that occurred at the Morgan Hill Ford Store June 25. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. We are grateful for all of the first responders and our partner agencies who quickly, and without hesitation, responded and assisted us last night. We deeply appreciate our Morgan Hill Police Department dispatchers and officers who answered numerous, frantic calls from witnesses of the shooting, gathering pertinent information and relaying it to the responding officers, allowing them to arrive on scene within four minutes of the initial call. Our officers stood tall and ran toward danger through a parking lot where evil could have been hidden behind every car or around any corner. This is representative of the bravery shown every day by our team and the hundreds of thousands of peace officers throughout the nation. We also recognize that our community is grieving. What occurred last night is not typical for our community. We are not used to dealing with this type of horrific tragedy. But as tragic as this event was, we want to assure you that this was an isolated event and that Morgan Hill continues to be one of the safest cities in the Santa Clara County. Our community is resilient, close-knit and involved. This will be key in the healing for all of us. The Morgan Hill Ford Store has established a GoFundMe page for the families of the victims at https://www.gofundme. com/f/soutoandlightmemorialpage. Details of the tragic event are as follows:

It appears to be a spontaneous action that resulted in the loss of these two men, and the loss of two fathers with families. —POLICE CHIEF DAVID SWING

Suspect had no rap sheet ➝ Shooting , 1

Leet's home and vehicle. Officers found his firearms collection—which included handguns, rifles and some older guns— at the home, Norman said. He lived there alone. By the end of last week, police gained entry to Leet's vehicle, where they found another handgun, a laptop computer and other electronics items, according to Norman. The laptop will be processed by the Santa Clara County Crime Lab. “All we’re really looking for is any kind of motive or suicide note that gives us insight on what happened, and why he did what he did,” Norman said. Investigators are also still examining video surveillance footage from inside the Ford Store during the June 25 violence to piece together all the details. Police have described the footage as having captured an extensive account of the events leading up to and including the bloody shooting, as well as its aftermath. But so far, all signs point to Leet acting spontaneously, shooting and killing his two direct supervisors less than two hours after he was fired from the Ford Store. At a June 26 press conference at the Morgan Hill police station, Police Chief David Swing described the events of the previous day, and praised his officers and partner agencies for their swift response to the emergency. “The officers who responded stood tall in the face of danger; they ran toward the danger,” Swing said. “They ran through a parking lot where evil could have lurked around any corner, around any car.” Swing gave the following account

of Leet’s actions on June 25: Leet, who worked in the parts department at the Ford Store, 17045 Condit Road, was fired about 4:15pm. Leet then walked out to his car in the parking lot, and stayed there for about 20 minutes before returning inside the Ford dealership. He returned to his work station, where he lingered for nearly an hour, then was escorted to a back office where he had a conversation with Light and Souto. That conversation ended when Leet shot Souto point-blank and killed him instantly, Swing said. Light then tackled Leet in an attempt to disarm him, but was unable to do so as Leet shot him with the same revolver he had fired at Souto. After shooting Light twice, “the suspect then walked into the parking lot, sat down on the curb, and shot himself in the head,” Swing said. The police department began receiving 911 calls reporting the shooting at 6:03pm, and the first officers arrived at 6:07pm, according to Swing. The first officers on the scene reported hearing the gunshot that killed Leet, and immediately saw his body on the ground with a gunshot wound and a handgun by his side. Fire department personnel responded immediately behind police, and entered the building after Morgan Hill police officers located the victims and cleared the scene of any remaining danger. Light, Souto and the suspect were pronounced dead at the scene. Police stayed at the Ford Store investigating the shooting until about 5am June 26, Swing said. From there, the Morgan Hill/Gilroy regional SWAT team served a search warrant at Leet's home, Swing continued. Officers found no evidence that the

June 25 shooting had been planned or premeditated. Police said they do not know why Leet, 60, was fired from the Ford Store. Souto was his direct supervisor in the Ford Store’s parts department, and Light was Souto’s supervisor, Norman said. Investigators have not found any indication that Leet had directly threatened anyone or was on the verge of causing problems at the Ford Store before he started shooting. Norman added that the initial 911 calls came reported an “active shooter” incident. Police further revealed they found two handguns belonging to Leet at the scene of the shooting. The weapon with which he shot Light and Souto was a .38-caliber revolver, Norman said. Also found was a semiautomatic handgun that was not fired during the incident. At Leet's home, police found at least 12 firearms that were registered in the suspect's name. Despite the fact he brought at least three guns with him to work June 25, investigators do not think Leet went to the Ford Store that morning planning to shoot his supervisors. “Based on statements from co-workers we (initially) believed it was preplanned, but as the investigation continued, we’re to the point now where we think he may have just carried weapons with him all the time,” Norman said. Police do not know if Leet had been carrying the two handguns on his person throughout the day, or if they had been in his car in the parking lot before he returned inside the Ford Store building. Swing added, “It appears to be a spontaneous action that resulted in the loss of these two men, and the loss of two fathers with families.”

Pedestrian dies when hit by vehicle at night ACCIDENT OCCURRED NEAR MONTEREY ROAD AND EAST MIDDLE AVENUE JUNE 25 Staff report

A pedestrian died after a vehicle struck him on Monterey Road in south Morgan Hill Tuesday night, according to police. The accident occurred about 10:26pm June 25 in the area of Monterey Road and East Middle Avenue. When Morgan Hill police officers arrived at the scene, a vehicle was located in the northbound lanes of traffic with significant front-end damage, police said. Officers also saw a male subject lying in the northbound lanes of Monterey Road, just north of the collision scene, according to police. The pedestrian was unresponsive and suffering from major injuries. Morgan Hill police officers and members of the Morgan Hill Fire Department began rescue efforts, and EMS personnel transported the pedestrian to Regional Medical Center in San Jose, according to police. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office had not released the pedestrian's name as of the evening of June 26. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, police said. Officers observed no signs of driving under the influence. Prior to the collision, the pedestrian was seen in the far right northbound lane of Monterey Road, according to police. Investigators think the vehicle was traveling at or below the posted speed limit before the collision. The police traffic unit is investigating the accident. Anyone who has additional information about this incident can call Cpl. Scott Silva or Traffic Officer John Kuhlen at (408) 776-7300 or the anonymous tip line at (408) 947-7867.

Hundreds of people attended the service, where leaders of the interfaith community and public officials offered consoling words and expressed their shock that such a violent workplace incident could happen in a tight-knit community like Morgan Hill. “The shock of their loss and the depth of grief is indescribable, and they definitely need all of the support they can get from our community and from other sources as well; the Ford Store family also is in shock and is in grief,” Pastor Mike Burchfield, chaplain with the Morgan Hill Police Department said to an overflowing crowd at the vigil. “But also we’ve come together for mutual support of one another during this tragic time." An amphitheater full of people joined hands and sang “Amazing Grace.” Several community leaders spoke to the crowd, including councilmembers Yvonne

gives us additional reach in the mid-county and south county areas,” said General Manager Lee May. In June, the Good Times newspaper was honored to be chosen among the state’s three top publications of its size for the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s “General Excellence” award. News Media Corp. publishes more than 70 media titles in nine states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Illinois, Nebraska, Oregon, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming. “We were pleased to find a Northern California-based publisher with adjacent properties that was a good fit for the Pajaronian. This transaction enables us to focus on the success of our core properties in the Midwest,” said NMC president Nickolas Monico. Owned by a succession of local owners for its first 72 years, The Pajaronian was sold in 1940 to the Cincinnati, Ohio-based E. W. Scripps Company, a national newspaper chain, and merged with the Watsonville Register to become the Register-Pajaronian. In 1995, News Media Corp. bought the publication.

Martínez-Béltran and John Mckay, Mayor Pro Tempore Rene Spring, City Manager Christina Turner and Assemblymember Robert Rivas. Martínez-Béltran called on the faith community to hold a vigil following the events. She consoled the Souto family and wept with his mother in an embrace as the service came to an end. The shock that a national issue like gun violence had penetrated the small rural city of Morgan Hill was evident in the speakers’ words at the vigil. Rivas used it as an opportunity to call for change, while councilmembers

like McKay and Martínez-Béltran promised this would not permanently change the city. “I’m tired of having to turn on the TV and learn, learn about a shooting, learn about victims, learn about their families who have to suffer this loss. It’s exhausting: This is not the America I grew up in, this is not the California I grew up in,” said Rivas. “This incident will never ever define this community. We need to come together and build Morgan Hill up,” he said. “This is a time to remember the victims, to pray for their families and as a community begin to heal.”

Santa Cruz’s Good Times weekly has purchased the 151-year-old Watsonville Register-Pajaronian, and its companion publication Aptos Life from News Media Corp. of Rochelle, Ill. Good Times is an affiliate of New SV Media, which publishes the Morgan Hill Times. New SV Media will operate four Monterey County weeklies formerly owned by News Media: King City Rustler, Greenfield News, Soledad Bee and Gonzales Tribune. Founded as The Pajaronian on March 5, 1868, the Watsonville newspaper has an illustrious history. It became the nation’s smallest daily paper to earn a Pulitzer Prize for public service in 1956 after its photographer caught the county’s district attorney participating in illegal gambling. Published since 1975, Good Times is Santa Cruz County’s largest circulation publication. “This acquisition

ESPN honors Mendez PRESTIGIOUS JIMMY V AWARD GOES TO HIGH SCHOOL FOOBALL COACH Emanuel Lee Sports Editor

Christopher and Sobrato, found out about the honor while visiting ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., in April. Safe to say, Mendez was flabbergasted. “That was something very shocking, and it didn't really sink in that day. I think I was in a fog living the dream. I woke up the next day and thought, ‘Is this real?’ It’s here, but it still probably won’t feel real to me until I'm up on that stage giving that speech. This is a dream come true, and I would have never seen this in a million years.” Mendez lives with his caretaker, Mike McAvoy, in Gilroy. Mendez’s parents, Josie and Robert Mendez Sr., live in Morgan Hill.

Robert Eliason

When ESPN aired Rob Mendez's life story in a Sports Center featured segment on Feb. 16, it forever changed his life. Mendez, a 31-year-old Gilroy resident who was born without arms and legs, was inundated with messages and requests to the point where his best course of action was to hire an agent to help him handle all of the demands of his time and direct him with his career going forward. The Gilroy High graduate,

who is entering his second year as the junior varsity football coach at Prospect High in Saratoga, will receive the Jimmy V Award for perseverance at the 2019 ESPYs, one of the most prestigious honors any sports figure can receive. The ESPY Awards will be televised live July 10 on ABC at 5 pm local time. The Jimmy V Award—named after the late North Carolina State men's basketball coach Jimmy Valvano—is awarded to “a deserving member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles through perseverance and determination.” Mendez, who has had assistant coaching stints on junior varsity teams at Gilroy,

THE REAL DEAL Morgan Hill’s Aden Valencia, a home-schooled eighth grader, made history by winning gold medals in both the freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling divisions in the World Combat Games 15-and-under category in mid-June. Valencia went a combined 6-0 in winning two titles. YOUTH WRESTLING

Valencia a world champ MORGAN HILL RESIDENT WINS GRECO, FREESTYLE TOURNAMENT emanuel lee Sports Editor

Not long after making history by winning two gold medals in freestyle and Greco Roman wrestling in the World Combat Games in Budapest, Hungary on June 18-19, Morgan Hill’s Aden Valencia viewed those accomplishments as if they were in the rearview mirror. “Right now I’m taking it as if I haven’t won anything,” said Valencia, who is home schooled and is planning on enrolling at Sobrato High for the 2020-2021 school year. “I’m still training hard as if I’m chasing the same goal (of winning worlds).” It’s readily apparent the 13-year-old Valencia possesses physical and mental attributes more befitting of a professional athlete than someone who hasn’t even started high school yet. Perhaps that’s why

it would be accurate to say Valencia is a wrestling prodigy. Whether Valencia realizes his dream of becoming an Olympic gold medalist remains to be seen, but this much is certain: He’s doing things at such a high level that one can’t help but marvel at his accomplishments. To wit: Valencia has nine national titles to his credit—and that’s just in wrestling. He’s also one of the best judo athletes in his division in the country, having won six judo titles in the Junior Olympics. Valencia’s dazzling performance in the World Combat Games was his best one yet. He went a combined 6-0, with one nail-biting match in each discipline. In the 38 kilogram (84 pounds) freestyle division, Valencia’s toughest match was his first. Trailing 4-0 with 90 seconds remaining, Valencia had to persevere and show some mettle if he wanted to advance. And that’s exactly what he did, scoring six consecutive points to post a 6-5 victory. Valencia’s dad, Joel, who said he has coached youth wrestling for 30 years, continues to be amazed by Aden’s accomplishments—and not just because he’s talking about his son.

“Aden has this ability to rise when he needs to—it’s uncanny,” Joel said. Valencia needed to dig deep and be at his best in his toughest match in the Greco Roman division. Once again, the first match proved to be his toughest. Valencia was down 6-0 and was within a whisker of being eliminated via technical fall. In the second period, Valencia’s opponent unleashed a head and arm throw that resulted in two points for a 6-0 lead. Had the opponent been awarded four points for the throw, the match would’ve ended immediately, since eight points equals a technical fall victory at the 15-and-under level. “I thought he was going to get four (points) on it, so I was a little worried,” Valencia said. “But I didn’t get exposed all the way, so they only gave him two points.” After that, it was all Valencia, who completed a bridge before scoring on two hard gut wrench moves to score a 7-6 decision. “I was the offensive wrestler the whole match, and he was kind of countering everything,” said Valencia, whose achievement was all the more impressive considering he was competing in just his third

Greco-Roman tournament of his burgeoning career against athletes in the competition who regularly train and compete in Greco-Roman tournaments. “I thought he would do well at worlds, but I didn’t know if he would win even though this kid wins everything,” Joel said. “He has nine national titles, but for him to win Greco when these boys from other countries specialize in Greco, that’s not a normal thing. Even at the older senior levels, no athlete has ever won in both styles at the world championships.” Like any ambitious competitor, Aden wakes up everyday thinking he’s the best and the hardest worker. While a lot of youth can think this, Aden knows this. The results speak for themselves, and Valencia felt a sense of pride as he made history. “Making history felt amazing,” he said. “There were a lot of emotions because this is what I’ve been training for a long time.” Valencia won the freestyle division on the first day of the two-day event, and later on that night Joel beamed with excitement only to see Aden respond in his typical “I haven’t accomplished anything yet” attitude. “After I won the freestyle, my

dad was going nuts,” Aden said. “But I told him, ‘We’ve still got tomorrow and this thing is not over.’ I couldn’t lose my focus.” In addition to his physical skills, mental toughness and determination, what separates Valencia apart from the rest is his ability to make in-match adjustments and prepare a solid game plan. “His brain is like a computer,” Joel said. “I’ll hand him the phone showing him a minute or two clip on his next opponent, and he’ll give the phone back and say, ‘OK, I know what I need to do to beat him.’ The way he can adjust and find holes in people’s styles is what I really think makes him unique.” Sobrato wrestling coach Luis Lopez agrees: “His knowledge of wrestling is off the charts.” With Joel and his wife set on having Aden enroll at Sobrato— and not into a private school/ wrestling academy in the Bay Area or outside of California— some observers have said that Aden has the potential to go down as a four-time CIF state wrestling champion, which would rightly earn him the moniker of being the most decorated and accomplished wrestler in South Valley history at the youth level.

W

. John Filice passed away peacefully on June 25, 2019 after a brief illness. He was born in Gilroy to John and Marion Bozzo Filice, both Italian immigrants. He attended local schools, graduating from Gilroy High School in 1948. Two weeks after graduation, he went to work for General Electric Motor Plant, retiring after 37 years as a customer service manager. Not one to sit idle for too long, John went to work for Nob Hill Foods for 13 years, managing their liquor and candy warehouse followed by overseeing their banana ripening operation.

E

sther Filadoro Marrazzo passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 25, 2019 at the age of 98.

Esther was born in Sault Ste Marie, Canada on February 17, 1921 to Ralph and Mary Filadoro, originally from Calabria, Italy. The family moved to Gilroy when she was three, and Esther graduated from Gilroy High School in 1940. In 1942, Esther married Frank Marrazzo whose family also originated from Calabria, Italy. The two owned and operated Frank’s TV on Lewis St., starting in 1946 and raised three children. Esther was an active member of St. Mary Church and taught catechism for over 30 years. Esther is survived by her daughter, Shirley Currie (Norm), and sons, David Marrazzo (Dorothy) and Rickey Marrazzo (Char), eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren who all adored her. Esther is preceded in death by her husband Frank Marrazzo and her parents Ralph and Mary Filadoro. Funeral Mass will be Monday, July 1, 2019 – 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church, Gilroy. Entombment will follow at St. Mary Cemetery with a reception to follow at Westside Grill Restaurant, Gilroy. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Esther’s life.

He was a lifelong member of St Mary Church. He found strength in attending daily mass and peace in saying his rosary. He was a longtime member of the Italian Catholic Federation Br. 28 where he served on their board and helped cook for some of the fundraising dinners and breakfasts. John was a life member of the Gilroy Elks Lodge. He served in many of the different officer and trustee positions, including exalted ruler twice. He served as their membership secretary for 14 years.
