In the past we’ve used this summary to explain what it means to be “woke.” However, after the events of 2020 and the sustained push for social justice, even my grandma uses the term now. Santa Cruzans pride themselves on their wokeness, often being ahead of the curve in this country— like earlier this year when we became one of the first cities in the nation to sanction a permanent Black Lives Matter street mural. Supplies for the mural all came from donations within the community and each year one nonprofit (that has demonstrated anti-racist practices) is chosen for its upkeep. The inaugural group was the Yoga For All Movement, an organization that brings yoga into prisons and youth incarceration centers to help those on the inside with mindful practice. Any woke individual would be proud of a monetary donation to YFAM in their name.
