EDITOR'S NOTE You know what we really love about putting out a Student Guide? When there are actual students around to use it! In 2020, there weren’t, which really put us in a bind. While we briefly considered, just for the LOLs, putting out an edition last year with articles like “Top Natural Sounds You Can Hear Echoing Through the Empty Hallways of Porter College” and “101 Things You Could Be Doing in Santa Cruz Right Now If You Were Here, Which You’re Not, Which Really Sucks,” we eventually just broke down into tears and went home to watch Schitt’s Creek. People, it was ugly. This year tho! You, college student, are here. That is such a great start! And so we, too, have returned— because, honestly, there is nothing left on any streaming service that we haven’t binged. OK, yes, some of us are still in our pajamas, but you know what I’m most proud of? We are all wearing pants. You will quickly discover we like to do our Student Guide a little differently around here. We call it Dilated Pupil for a reason, that’s all I’m saying. Yes, you will find in these pages all the food, fun, piercing artists, bus routes, and everything else you need to live the Santa Cruz college experience. But you’ll also find stuff that is both useful and weird, like Hugh McCormick’s cultural history of the UCSC banana slug mascot. And stuff that—well, we don’t even know what to call Richard Stockton’s guide to sleeplessness in college, but it is equal parts funny and terrifying, and you must read it. God, it’s good to be back. Slug Matters Yeah, it’s funny, but there’s a reason generations of UCSC students have fought for the banana slug mascot BY HUGH MCCORMICK
F
or Robert Sinsheimer, who served as UCSC Chancellor from 1977 to 1980, the banana slug was Voldemort. It Which Must Not Be Named had served as the unofficial mascot of his school’s co-ed teams for years, but the lowly hermaphroditic gastropod was a despised figure in Sinsheimer’s spacious office. It was 1970, only five years after UCSC’s founding, that captain of the men’s volleyball team David Van Cleve dubbed his squad the “Banana Slugs,” creating the now-famous mascot in the process. The universi-
6
ty’s on-campus sports programs had begun to gain in popularity, but an institutional team name and mascot didn’t exist. UCSC’s soccer club reinvigorated the banana slug mascot in 1974 when it rocked slug t-shirts at an All-Cal tournament. The team’s comical name and even-more-comical defeat at the hands of the San Jose Spartans was noted in the San Jose Mercury News. Throughout the ’70s and into the early ’80s, the banana slug began to capture the hearts and minds of the student body. Students in all of the colleges embraced the humble, slimy and slow creature as their own—a collective rejection of the ferocious athletic competition
encouraged at many other schools. Most of the student body came to agree that campus sports and physical education—while always an important part of life at UCSC— should be based on some uncommon slug-like ideas. First and foremost, the joy of participating should always outweigh the importance of winning. And sports and athletics should be for all UCSC students, not just the superstar team members of major programs. That philosophy has been passed down through generations of classes to today’s student body, who continue to embrace it. “Sports are important for health and exercise, and for building community, but aren’t really a huge

part of UCSC’s campus life,” says Lit Department grad student Amani Liggett. “Sports players at other schools are always travelling—and are summarily always exhausted. No one here says, ‘Sports are getting in the way of my education.’”
SINSHEIMER’S SEA LIONS But UCSC’s legendary mascot almost wasn’t. In 1980, Sinsheimer took his best shot at stamping out the increasingly popular banana slug after a handful of campus teams clamored for more organization, and a bit more competition in their extramural play. UCSC joined NCAA’s Division III in five sports, and the application required—you guessed it—an official team name. Using all of his wizarding power to vanquish the Dark Lord for good, Sinsheimer selected a new moniker for his school’s teams: the Sea Lions. When then-athletic-director Terry Warner dropped the bomb on his men’s basketball team, decreeing that their mascot would be Sinsheimer’s Sea Lions, the team fought back. Declaring they would rock nothing other than a slug on their jerseys, the ballers went mascot-less for a year. Their blue and gold unis simply said “UCSC” on them. Sinsheimer envisioned the Sea Lion as a more dignified and proper mascot for his growing university, one more suitable for serious athletic competition. At their fastest, sea lions can reach a speed of around 35 mph. The slow lil’ banana slug? Around six inches per minute. When the chancellor painted a gigantic sea lion in the middle of the basketball floor, many students were incensed. And for five long years, UCSC dealt with a polarizing two-mascot problem. In 1986, UCSC students from all colleges banded together, and voted via referendum to officially declare the banana slug their mascot. Sinsheimer and select faculty fought them every step of the way. The scion of the university refused to honor the students’ overwhelming
choice, arguing that athletes and only athletes should be the ones to choose the school’s mascot. His ingenious plan eventually backfired when a large poll of athletes showed that they too “dug the slug.” “The banana slug emphasizes community more than winning championships—and symbolizes the quirkiness and vibe of the campus,” says Liggett. “Now people everywhere know the slug mascot. And what it and the school stand for.”
SLIME FAMOUS And yes, people everywhere do know the banana slug mascot. The quirky little hermaphrodite has received a steady share of national attention, putting UCSC on the pop-culture map. Sports Illustrated and the National Directory of College Athletics named the Banana Slug the nation’s best college nickname. ESPN listed it in its top 10. California’s official state mollusk has received spreads in numerous publications including People Magazine. And who could forget its appearance on Vincent Vega’s t-shirt in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction? The banana slug mascot has been more successful in unifying the student body and attracting would-be-slimers to UCSC’s campus than Sinsheimer could ever have envisioned. “The banana slug mascot is a draw, in and of itself. Its weirdness attracts people to Santa Cruz and UCSC. The friendly little slug appeals to those who are outsiders, hippies, punks, and free thinkers. It makes them feel like this is the place for them. A home where they can be themselves—and be happy,” says Liggett. Today, the fighting Banana Slugs compete in 15 (men’s and women’s) varsity sports in NCAA Division III’s Coast to Coast Athletic Conference. In addition to a number of successful club programs, UCSC teams have been nationally ranked in tennis, soccer, swimming, and men’s volleyball. Unlike many
other universities, UCSC’s sporting programs offer zero athletic scholarships or grants in aid. UCSC isn’t technically a “sporting school,” but over 25% of the student body participates in intramural athletics. Surprisingly, intramural athletics tend to be better funded than the school’s intercollegiate athletic programs. For many years, UCSC’s athletic programs operated at an unsustainable deficit. With a lowly budget of $1.4 million, costs for organized sports exceeded over $2 million each year. Even so, UCSC had the most meager operating budget in all of Division III. Games and matches on campus were consistently desolate affairs, with little student attendance or enthusiasm. Sometimes Sammy the Slug, the school’s giant yellow banana slug mascot, would dance, jump and slither all by himself. Because of a lack of regular student support for on-campus college athletics, it was decided that it would be prudent to channel the entire program’s funds to other areas and services. In 2016, UCSC’s admin believed the only way to maintain the school’s athletic program would be to vastly increase the student athletic funding tuition fee—from $5 a quarter to a whopping $90 per quarter ($270 per academic year). To put this number in perspective, UC Berkeley’s student athletic
fee is $110 a year; UC Davis’s is $150. It was considered extremely unlikely that such a substantial fee increase would be supported by the student body. Shockingly though, 43% of all undergraduates participated in 8>

a referendum backing the fee and 63% of them voted to approve the fee increase in concept. In May 2017, students approved Measure 68, the Intercollegiate Athletics and Activities Access Fee. 79.84% of students voted in favor of the measure and a new fee of $38.50 per student per quarter. In between dealing with guests at her circulation desk in McHenry Library, 21-year-old Lit major and Porter College resident Mica admits that “Sports at UCSC are different. Most slugs are into health and fitness, just not the competitive part of sports. I’m proud of my school and being a banana slug. Other mascots are so boring—bears, wildcats. We are totally unique and a bit weird here. The art. The music. Our sports. The community. The types of programs we have here sets us apart.”

BTW, SLUGS ARE COOL In case you were wondering, banana slugs are waaaaay cooler than sea lions. As the second-largest species of terrestrial slug/mollusk in the entire world, Pacific banana slugs (Arioli-
8
max columbianus) are simultaneous hermaphrodites and reproduce by trading sperm with their mate. Their famous slime contains a collection of pheromones that attracts other slugs for boom-boom sexy time. The mucus secreted by banana slugs can absorb up to 100 times its volume in water and contains chemicals that can numb the tongues of predators. The slime is a liquid crystal substance—neither liquid nor solid. Material engineers are going apeshit over the potential for the slugs’ exciting slime. Most often bright yellow (hence the banana part), the redwood-loving slugs can also be brown, black, tan, greenish, or even white. Alterations in light exposure, moisture levels, and shifts in food consumption can cause color changes, indicating whether a slug is sick or healthy, and what age it is. Black, polka-dotlike spots are also common, and can cause the slug to look rotten-bananalike, or almost entirely black. As detritivores, banana slugs meander across forest floors using a single muscular foot. They process animal droppings, moss, dead plant material and leaves and then recycle
them into the soil. Banana slugs also get a kick out of mushrooms, distributing spores and seeds when they munch. They play an important role in the ecosystem, consuming detritus and contributing to decomposition and nutrient cycles. “No Known Predators. It’s a theme or a meme on campus,” says Mica. “The only threat to a banana slug is a freshman on a bicycle!” Well, not really. Though dozens of students wear “No Known Predators” swag, banana slugs do face a handful of natural threats. Battling numb tongues and slippery slime, Geese, salamanders, ducks, garter snakes and raccoons have been known to feast on banana slugs. They roll the gastropods in soil to strip off and bind the mucus and then chew away. However, when it comes to UCSC students, banana slugs continue to feel the love. “My coming to UCSC was all about first impressions. As soon as I stepped out of my car it was like ‘This is really really nice,’” says Liggett. “The air here is so delicious. The redwoods are awesome… but the banana slug sealed the deal.”

No Sleep
Till Graduation A Santa Cruz comedian and UCSC alum reveals the truth about sleep in college: there is none BY RICHARD STOCKTON
S
leep deprivation is worn like a badge of honor in this country. Hunter S. Thompson once described a Hell’s Angels party where one member fell asleep and the other members urinated on him. High school students continue to draw penises on unconscious heads. College students love to talk about how exhausted they are. A recent University of Georgia study showed that American college students have become the most sleep-deprived population of young people in the world. On weeknights, 35% of college students say they stay up past 3am at least once a week. One in eight college students fall asleep in class. It’s the NCAA Insomnia Games! 10 >

You snooze, you lose! The National Center For Biology Information says that 90% of college students have roommates, and 41% wake up at night due to the noise of others. One day during my first year at UCSC, I crashed early in my Merrill College dorm room. In the middle of the night, sounds of heavy breathing brought me out of a deep sleep, and I heard Ron and Lisa having sex. Lisa was the beautiful daughter of the Merrill College Provost, and my roommate Ron liked to pose naked as the David (he pretty much nailed it). In other words, this middle-of-the-night tryst did not surprise me. They were trying to be quiet, but their panting painted a picture. They whispered to each other and then laughed until they gasped for breath. When they almost got it back, I yelled, “Excuse me! I’m trying to masturbate over here!” They laughed so hard I heard one of them fall out of bed. The next day we pounded coffee to make ourselves go to class. Lisa gloated, “We didn’t sleep all night.” “So I heard.” That was 1968, and sleep deprivation was already dominating college life. I now stay up late entertaining audiences as a stand-up comedian; back then, I used to stay up all night trying to remember if I had amnesia or insomnia. I would lie in bed thinking, “If I stop doing math in my head now, I will get 3.725 hours of sleep.”
rewards of skimming, summarizing and cheating. In an English class, I was assigned to read Moby Dick in a week. The only person I know who read Moby Dick in a week did it while serving time in San Quentin, and was high on meth. His review of the book: “It’s about a fish.” I hope someday our academic institutions decouple quantity and quality, but for now students must have faith that no matter how banal or useless these facts are that you spend your nights memorizing, someday they will be critical to you when you slip into middle age and spend your evenings trying to best your 50-year-old buddies at Jeopardy. Going through your peak learning years sleep-deprived will seem like a small price to pay as you confound your friends and family when the Daily Double says, “Sandy Cheeks wears a space suit and helmet when she hangs out with this title guy,” and you yell out, “Who is SpongeBob SquarePants?” You might think you can conquer sleep deprivation with the relatively benign caffeine, a drug that causes it. I’ve got my coffee down to one a day, made in a five-gallon bucket.
THE FIRST RULE OF SLEEPWALKING Sleep deprivation activates catecholamine, the chemical that triggers the fight or flight response in the amygdala of the brain. It’s a gateway drug to anger. I heard about a guy who ran another car off the road to make his meditation class. OK, it was me. “Nama-stay outta my way!”
You cannot overcome sleep deprivation with drugs. On this one I am an expert. In college, I used tremendous amounts of Dexedrine (the Adderall of the ’60s.) Thirty years before Fight Club, I tried extending my insomnia with drugs in pursuit of opening a portal to discovering my life’s purpose. All I found was my Tyler Durden. I remember being told that I sleepwalked as a kid, and with self-induced insomnia at 19, I began to commit crimes in my sleep. I remember designing the treehouse that we planned to build in the forest above Merrill College, but I do not recall chopping down the redwood tree. Later, I was shown a photo of me sitting on the felled trunk with an axe.
YOU’RE A GENIUS WHEN YOU DREAM Soren Kierkegaard said, “Dreaming is the height of genius.” Dreaming is amazing in that you are both fully alive and unconscious. But it can lead to hypnophobia, the fear of falling asleep. Is your dorm room bed big enough? One foot or a hand over the edge of your bed exposes you to monster attack. Fear of falling asleep actually makes sense. What if I talk in my 12 >

sleep and divulge state secrets? Even worse, what if I snore? One time, my wife Julie started leaving our bed to sleep in another room. “No way I snore!” I told her indignantly. Then she recorded my snore with my cell phone and made it my ringtone. Call me and my phone sounds like I’m trying to start a lawn mower. At UCSC, I played guitar wired on Dexedrine for 20 hours at a stretch. The more strung out I got on Dexedrine, the more jealous I became of Bob Dylan (later I dropped out of college to become a professional folk singer. That led to a lot of construction work. I specialize in shoveling road-apples.) Bob Dylan plays guitar inspired by revolution. I played guitar inspired by watching myself play guitar in the mirror. I was so jealous, I dreamt my girlfriend slept with him. It ate at me until I finally blurted out, “I know this is insane, but I dreamed that you slept with Bob Dylan. Baby, I hope you’re not too disgusted with me over this ridiculous fear.” She said, “No worries, it’s OK. So … did I go to his house or did he come to mine?”
ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL A new study of 19,000 newly licensed drivers in New South Wales, Australia, shows that drivers 17 to 24 years old who sleep less than six hours are 20 percent more likely to be involved in a car crash. Go twenty-four hours without sleep and you will drive your car like you are legally drunk. He died peacefully in his sleep. The passengers in his car died screaming. One time I drove non-stop for three days with Will Bagley’s 15-foot rowboat on top of my Chevy pickup, from Santa Cruz to the Cumberland River. Exhaustion had me beyond legally drunk; I wobbled when I walked. I put Bagley and his boat in the Cumberland and headed for the Smokey Mountains. I was done in, but the thought of my lady love waiting for me 10 hours away got my little head thinking, and I was back on the highway.

Wean from the screen. Who hasn’t stayed up until 4 am watching Netflix? But as a practice, beware the midnight Google. “Think I’ll turn in. Wait a minute, I wonder what Jack Black is up to?” I fell asleep. I woke up coming over the top of a hill on the wrong side of the highway. A line of cars going 70 miles an hour was coming at me, and by the time we saw each other, we were head-to-head. The first car cut to my right, and the second car cut to my left. In this end-of-life moment, everything went into slow motion and I saw daylight between the two cars. I spun the wheel to the right and hit the gas. My front bumper clicked as it touched the rear bumper of the first car, and my rear bumper did the same as it scratched the bumper of the car that had cut to my left. Somehow, I was miraculously back on the right side of the road, rolling away from the scene of the crime. I could see in my rear view mirror that the line of cars now behind me had all made it safely past, and I floored it until I was out of Kentucky. I pulled into the woods and slept for twelve hours.
SLEEP CHEAT SHEET Here are a few tips on how to get a little more sleep in your college years: • Encourage Ron and Lisa to get their own room. • Wear PJs. Not kidding, you’ll sleep better. • Do yoga in your 45-minute wind down to sleep. Focus on a peaceful scene like walking in a forest, floating among clouds, or
deleting your Facebook account. • Do not try to compete with Sophia, who says she sleeps four hours a night, has a boyfriend and a 4.0 GPA. In all probability, Sophia is a liar. • If you walk in your sleep, it’s OK. Maybe you’ll get those last two thousand steps on your Fitbit. Just don’t carry an axe. • Control your drug use. I used to be a terrible drug addict. I’m still a drug addict, I’ve just gotten good at it. I used to experiment with drugs, now I know exactly what I’m doing. How do you think I wrote this? • Exercise. It’s the yin to sleep’s yang. Got a big date with your heart’s desire? Steph Curry naps for two hours before a game. Just sayin’. • Wean from the screen. Who hasn’t stayed up until 4 am watching Netflix? But as a practice, beware the midnight Google. “Think I’ll turn in. Wait a minute, I wonder what Jack Black is up to?” Remember, you are smartest upon waking. Stop burning the midnight oil; don’t let sleep deprivation kill you. I often think about my near head-on crash in Kentucky, and after I perform a show I will sleep in the parking lot if I am tired. I am one entertainer who can honestly say, “I’ll be here all night.” Want to make the world a better place, future world leaders? Get more sleep.

SURF SPOTS
Capitola Jetty
When the swell is up, a nice left careens in front of the jetty and the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t snag in the kelp-infested water. Also, about a block and a reef away is the infamous Toe’s Over, which needs a huge winter swell and a minus low tide to break. But when it does, it’s pure left- and right-breaking bliss.
Cowell The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners, but it also has nice sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes.
Four Mile Here, locals tend to stare hard and long at newcomers. Because of its bluff-protected location, Four Mile isn’t affected (as much) by the afternoon summer winds as most spots on the North Coast. Reaches its full potential during west, northwest 10-foot-and-above swells.
The Hook Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break also has a lot of surfers
that are “hooked” on the spot. Nevertheless, it’s got a right-facing wave that, if you can maneuver around the flock, is to die for.
Manresa/La Selva Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars. But a lot of the time the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over the place. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside and nil to no summertime surf—unless there’s a south swell.
Natural Bridges When the conditions are just right, like an 8-foot west swell, this spot has the best tube rides available. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.
Pleasure Point This place is generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra thin-glassed rippers. Practice, as always, common courtesy and you should be all right in the outer, best breaks.
Private Longboard paradise. Clean right-facing lines peel off and make for a great ride that will take you all the way into the break known as Trees and
into the Capitola Wharf. Well, not quite, but the ride is long and the waves are gentle. Easygoing, without all the soft-board hassles of Cowell to spoil your wave.
Scott Creek A potent combination of a beach and reef break, Scott dishes out about every challenge a surfer can handle. From long paddles and strong currents and rips to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott isn’t for the faint of heart—or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water. Breaks best with a powerful north swell.
Steamer Lane Perhaps the most classic break in the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot and Indicators—the Lane has it all, including ogling tourists. There’s even a surfing museum in the nearby lighthouse.
Three Mile Primo reef break that is usually uncrowded, especially during weekdays. Named after the number of miles after Swift Street, it cops a great right line, particularly during a winter northwest swell.
