wo thoughts come to mind when locals drive into the Hollister Municipal Airport: skydiving and planes. But now a third thought can also be evoked: having a heck of a good meal.
Not since the Ding-A-Ling Café left the grounds nearly five years ago have aromas flown from the kitchen at the restaurant site at 155 Skylane Drive. But on Jan. 18, Seabrisa’s Eatery relocated its restaurant to the coveted spot. Owned by the husband and wife
team of Lupe Farias and Kaley Arie, Seabrisa’s originally opened at 696 Fourth St. in Hollister in November 2017. Issues with that location necessitated the move, Arie says, and though they were nervous about it at first, the restaurant is busier now than at its previous location.
“We’re getting a lot of the business park people, a lot of the pilots, and the same clientele has followed us over here,” Arie says of the new location. “Surprisingly, a lot of them either work or live out here.” The newfound success was a dream the couple started to make real when they met six years ago at a Cheesecake Factory in San Jose. Both were employees for the restaurant chain, Farias as the general manager and Arie as a hostess. Soon after they met, they began
working for Johnny’s Harborside in Santa Cruz. “That’s where I got more experience with making food; I was a prep there for more than two years,” Arie says. And Farias kept busy as the main cook, also in charge of orders and employees. But 16-hour working days, combined with commuting back and forth from their home in Hollister, took a toll on the new couple. “We just said, ‘Why not find something that’s for us—our own thing, but close to home—and ➝ 4
NEW DIGS Lupe Farias and Kaley Arie recently moved their Seabrisa’s Eatery to Skylane Drive near the Hollister Municipal Airport, where their new customer base includes pilots. Blackened fish tacos and sautéed sanddabs are among the restaurant’s most popular dishes.

put in the same amount of effort? So that’s what we did,” Arie explains. Farias, who began his restaurant career as a dishwasher, is now the head chef at Seabrisa’s Eatery. Arie preps the food and oversees the staff. The couple was initially going to call their restaurant Seabreeze, but Farias says they landed on Seabrisa’s Eatery since “we also wanted a half-Mexican, half-English name.” As the name suggests, Seabrisa’s has become well-known for its fish tacos, fish and chips, cioppino, and poke and spicy tuna roll appetizers. "It has great food; I love the fish tacos," says Hollister resident and frequent customer Cathy Garza. As much its recognized for its seafood, Arie says dishes such as chicken fettuccine and fajitas are also popular among customers. “We sell a lot of seafood, but I don’t want to classify us just as [serving] seafood,” she explains. “A lot of new
customers will say, ‘I thought you were only seafood; I didn’t realize you had other options.’ It’s more American food with a little bit of variety.” Because of Seabrisa’s growing popularity, hiring new staff has become a necessity. Jennifer Billington was recently hired as a server after moving from Monterey to Hollister. “I’m excited to be here,” she says. “I hear they’re doing very well.” Porsche Abney has been on staff for over four months and has already noticed an increase in business at Seabrisa’s new location. “It’s been a lot busier here than over there,” she says. “It’s constant; it’s boomed. I love it. And our regulars followed us over here.” In addition to new wait staff, Arie says, Farias is looking for help in the kitchen.. “It’s hard finding cooking staff; he’s working all day every day,” she
adds. “We’re trying to find some help at least so he can take a break.” Arie says these breaks would allow her husband to come into the dining room and chat with customers. “The one thing he misses from [ the Fourth Street location] is the open kitchen; he was able to talk with everybody,” she adds. “He misses being able to see everybody and to see what they’re eating.” On a recent sunny afternoon, regular Carol Scagliotti was catching up with Seabrisa’s staff while Brian Murphy enjoyed the day’s special—a French dip rib-eye sandwich with horseradish cream sauce. “It was very good,” he said. Debbie Pivetti also left Seabrisa’s sated. “It’s the best kept secret in Hollister,” she said. Seabrisa’s Eatery is open Sun-Thu, 7am-9pm, and Fri-Sat, 7am-10pm. Call 831.313.1233.

HOT TICKET The Poppy Jasper International Film Festival hits downtown Morgan Hill Apr. 3-7.
MARCH 22, 2019
I 6
f you didn’t know better, you might guess that Poppy Jasper was a forgotten silent-film star, a wide-eyed ingénue in a Gatsby dress from the Roaring ’20s. In fact, Poppy Jasper is a gemstone known for its distinctive claret reds and persimmon oranges that’s found exclusively in Morgan Hill.
These days, though, when you hear “Poppy Jasper,” you think of the Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, a suddenly hot-ticket five-day event in downtown Morgan Hill that this year takes place Apr. 3-7.
The festival is not new--it dates back 15 years--but after years of struggling to find an audience, the 2018 event experienced a big jump in attendance and, to the extent you can measure such a thing, buzz. According to the festival’s
accounting, its increase in attendance from the previous year was more than eightfold. Last year was the festival’s first year under its new director, L. Mattock “Mattie” Scariot, a veteran film producer with local roots who injected a new dose of enthusiasm and energy in a festival flagging in both. In her efforts to revive the festival, Scariot even considered changing its name. People were telling her she’d be better off starting from scratch. But in the end, she decided she couldn’t part with “Poppy Jasper.”
“When it came down to it,” she said, “I just liked the anonymity of ‘Poppy Jasper.’ It’s the rock that’s found only in Morgan Hill, but still it sounds like it could be anywhere. It still sounds good. It’s fun to say.” Kim Bush is among the core group of locals who founded the film festival back in 2003. She said Scariot came along just when the festival needed her. “We gave birth to the baby,” she said, “but now she’s having it walk, and run.” The festival will screen about 100 films at three venues--the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse,

of film festivals was connect curious audiences with films they would not see in the mainstream channels of distribution. Today, the Internet does that even better. So all film festivals have to adapt, to find a new sense of purpose. Scariot’s strategy is to involve as much of her community as possible in the creative process of filmmaking. The festival has always supported programs that put the tools of filmmaking in the hands of students, but it has now expanded that vision to include just about everyone. This year, the festival
will include finished films from four demographic groups made up of residents of the Gilroy/Morgan Hill area: young people, millennials, older adults and seniors. This year, the youth program, for kids from 4 to 14, brought in about 60 local students for a project that gave them hands-on experience in everything from technology to interviewing skills. A crew of young adult filmmakers came together to shoot a music video for reggae artist Jordan T, which will be premiere at a festival-sponsored screening at Golden State Brewery in Gilroy.
The festival’s over-40 group created a buzz last year with a well-received short film noir titled The Last Song. Many of the same people are back putting together another short, this one a caper comedy. And, for the first time, the festival will be screening a documentary that presents interviews of the over-70 senior citizens in the area, reflecting on their lives and adventures. As they did last year, the over40 group created their film in just three weekends, one each for writing, shooting and editing. “I remember they said, ‘Mattie, ➝ 12

Gavilan College and the Granada Theater--with other events happening at the Golden State Brew & Grill and Capos Night Club & Restaurant in Gilroy. The selected films represent 28 countries, about a dozen of which will be represented by visiting filmmakers (pending the issue of visas, in some cases). In that regard, this year’s Poppy Jasper Festival will operate much like film festivals have done historically. But the film industry has changed radically, even since the festival was first established. The original purpose

we can’t write a script in one day,’” said Scariot. “Well, yes we can, and that’s what we did. Sometimes, you overthink things and make things more difficult because we want it to be an Academy Award-winning film. But really, all you need to do is just exercise your filmmaker’s brain and just do it.” Dan Craig, who has had some experience in screenwriting and acting, took on the protagonist’s role last year. He said that shooting the film was really all about fun and embracing the amateur ethic. Most people who participated had no experience in movies, other than being fans. “You’d be surprised,” he said, “at how much creative good stuff comes out of people who haven’t had any experience. Because it’s 40 and over, obviously, it’s not about developing young filmmakers, although that doesn’t mean these skills aren’t something worth developing at any age.” The over-70 program visited care facilities in Gilroy and Morgan Hill to find people with
interesting stories to tell, starting with a round-table discussion and turning to individual interviews. “We really just wanted to hear from them,” said film festival board member Katie Khera who took part in the over-70 interviews. “It was incredibly entertaining and very poignant. I have to say that I was teary at a couple of different points with these stories.” On top of all the community participation, the film festival is still centered on the mission on which it was established: to connect independent filmmakers with professionals in the industry. Among the invited guests this year is Randy Spendlove, a musician and Grammy-winning record producer who is now the president of the music division at Paramount Pictures. Spendlove, who grew up in Gilroy, is making his second visit to the festival. He and Scariot dated briefly in high school, and she has maintained a friendship with him over the years. Once she became the director of the festival, she decided
to visit Spendlove and ask him to come back to his old hometown. “I felt like I was asking him to the prom,” she said. “He didn’t even ask me anything about the festival. He just said, ‘Of course I’ll be there.’” This year, Spendlove is interrupting his work on the new Elton John biopic to visit Gilroy and perform with a band featuring bassist Polo Jones to perform at the festival’s Friday night gala. Other guests include writer and producer Kevin Rubio (another Gilroy native), Mill Valley Film Festival director of programming Zoe Elton, and Pixar’s artistic recruiter Doeri Welch. They and other industry professionals will participate in a series of panel discussions on women in the industry, models of distribution and other areas of interest for indie filmmakers. The festival culminates on Sunday, April 7 with its annual awards ceremony. As a whole, it represents a remarkable comeback for a festival that had been struggling for several
years. Scariot spent 12 years living in Los Angeles and working for the film industry. But her heart is in South Valley, and she has family or personal roots in Hollister, Gilroy and Morgan Hill. One of her primary goals, she said, is to create an event in which both Gilroy and Morgan Hill can take ownership. “It’s been incredibly rewarding,” she said of her efforts to involve both cities in the planning and sponsorship of the festival. “It’s been a lot more positive than I thought it would be. I thought there would be more competitiveness, but Gilroy and Morgan Hill want to come together, and I feel together they’re stronger.” Festival co-founder Kim Bush said that it’s always been tough getting attention for the festival. “I have seen people standing under a marquee that says ‘Poppy Jasper Film Festival’ and still not realize it’s happening.” But, she said, under Scariot’s leadership, Poppy Jasper has another shot at becoming one of Northern California’s signature film festivals. “The festival had some really lean times for a while,” said Bush, “and I think it took someone like Mattie, who is actually in the business, to see what she could do with it. We have many core members who have always believed in this festival, and they kept it going. Our first few years were our glory years. And now we have the glory years again, which is really great to see.”
