A COMFORTABLE RIDE Hollister’s Corbin Motorcycle Seats & Accessories is known around the world

WILD ONE Motorcycle innovator Mike Corbin continues to create the easy ride BY JENNY ARBIZU

n the outskirts of Hollister, a hidden gem can be found—one mostly known to motorcycle enthusiasts, longtime residents, or travelers headed northbound toward Highway 156 on San Felipe Road. It’s a place akin to the magical place where emerald cities are discovered. And much like the fictional girl who followed a yellow brick road to an emerald city, motorcyclists from all over the world follow a tree-lined road—Technology

Parkway—to find a similar place of wonderment. And when they get there, Mike Corbin will remind them: “You’re in the finest motorcycle seat shop in the world.” Corbin Motorcycle Seats & Accessories has been a fixture at 2360 Technology Parkway since owner Corbin opened it in 1998. Customers who walk through its showroom doors will find themselves entranced by a room where the oldest motorcycle and

not-yet-released electric cars dwell. But in this factory, everyone should pay attention to the man behind the parabolic curtain. Born and raised in Gardner, Mass., Corbin’s love for motorcycles began at age 14 with his first bike ride. After graduating high school, he joined the United States Navy and served as a master electrician aboard the USS Ranger CVA-61, serving in ports along the Pacific coast from 1961 to 1964. Returning to Massachusetts

after the Navy, he began a career as an electrical contractor—and also began making and selling motorcycle seats on the side. In 1968, Corbin chose to manufacture motorcycle seats full-time. Met with skepticism, he recalls a co-worker asking him what he was going to do next. “I said, ‘well I’m going to make motorcycle seats,’ ” Corbin recalls. “He waited for a minute and then said, ‘That’s a dumb idea! Motorcycles already have seats!’ ”

After selling seats in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Corbin decided to move his family to the California Pacific coast. “I always wanted to come back to California,” he says. In 1980, he began making motorcycle seats in Watsonville, and later moved his shop to Castroville.

In 1995, Corbin and his son attended Hollister City Council meetings in hopes to restart the historic Hollister Rally—that made headlines in 1947—for its 50th anniversary. While bringing back the historic Hollister Rally, Corbin found his shop in Castroville was too small for the growing company. “So, I bought land out here and built this building,” he says of his 82,000-square-foot Hollister factory.

And with Corbin’s showroom and warehouse in Ormond, Fla., which sits at 11,000 square feet, he adds, “We’re about two-acres under roof.” Corbin also built The Wizard’s Cafe onto the site to “enrich the experience of the motorcycle community,” he says. Made specifically as a waiting area for ride-in customers, the cafe serves breakfast and lunch Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Hollister factory ➝ 4

But Corbin found a way to make them better. “We actually invented the idea of having a factory that manufactures an aftermarket line of motorcycle seats,” he says. “Before that, people would have seats recovered at upholstery shops or something like that.” And 51 years later, the doting husband and father of 10 continues to create quality motorcycle seats for every bike dating back to 1958. If you’re on the bike a lot, it’s worth it. They make the best seats in the business.” Due to the high demand of its quality products, the factory’s vast production-line of jobs and departments—seamstresses and cutters, engineers, electricians, mechanics and an Information Technology Department—are sewing the fabric onto the seats, molding the seats, putting electric heat inside, inspecting it, testing it, generating web pages and taking ➝ 6

“We make everything ourselves,” he explains. Creating about 150 seats per day—and 25,000 seats per year— the factory ships its products to customers all over the world. Corbin says only a small number of people actually visit the shop on a daily basis. “So [the seats] are ordered on the internet or on the phone,” he says. “On the website, we have a configurator so you can choose all the materials and colors. And we make the seat and ship it to them UPS or FedEx.” Ralph Porras from Pacific Grove is impressed with the quality of care and service he received on his ride-in visit. “The experience was excellent,”

The company also creates saddle-bags and electric cars. “Our design shop is designing a whole car,” Corbin says. It has previously made the 300 Sparrow—an electric car—and has the prototype for the new Sparrow on display in the showroom. The company has also been working on “the greatest invention ever,” Corbin says—a seat that can heat or cool. He and his son are currently patenting the idea. Corbin is also currently working with motorcycle industry locals to keep the Hollister Rally an annual event, with or without the cooperation of the city council.

41Live! promoter Bob Richards Jr. says the rally—renamed The 47 Camp Ride—will definitely take place at Bolado Park over Fourth of July weekend this year. “You could bring out [a big celebrity] to Bolado Park right now, set it all up, and [the city council] would still say the rally is cancelled,” Richards says. “They think just because it’s not downtown, it’s not a rally.” Ever the innovator, Corbin says he’s determined to continue his events annually. “The motorcycle industry is working very hard to keep the rally alive organically,” he says. “So we’re the ones in the businesses, and we can make it happen.” Contact Corbin Motorcycle Seats & Accessories at 634.1100, or call tollfree at 800.538.7035. t doesn’t get more green and lush than this Gilroy spot out on Buena Vista Avenue, directly across from colorful Satori Cellars. George and Lynda Green, who met and still work in the medical field, bought this property for its tranquil setting and views, not really thinking about vines, but then life introduced them to the possibility of vineyards as landscaping with benefits. And, the benefits! They’ve built a welcoming space for enjoyment of their excellent wines, live music and the endless green vistas that restore calm and purpose to this hectic life. Their 12 acres of vines at Verde Vineyards, predominantly Bordeaux varieties, are made into wine by consultant Jeff Ritchey (San Saba, Sycamore Creek, Pichetti).

Lynda’s favorite is the chardonnay, while George tends toward the 2015 Sophie’s Blend. Director of Sales Ron Jensen likes them all. Seriously good is the 2015 estate merlot, and if the barrel samples of the Malbec and the cabernet franc are any indication of the prowess of vintage 2018, the resulting wines are going to be killer good. If you get a chance to buy futures, don’t hesitate. But, be warned: George and I might drink that cab franc before it sees a bottle! We were also mightily impressed with the 2018 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, with its gutsy cranberry and raspberry core. THEATER

Play Within a Play

BACKSTAGE TURMOIL Pintello Comedy Theater’s production of ‘Opening Night’ concludes April 6.

APRIL 5, 2019

Pintello Theater brings Canadian comedy to Gilroy

12

By SUSAN L. RIFE

Ruth and Jack Tisdale (April Ouellette and Jeff Patereau) go out to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary by seeing a stage production of a new Canadian play, Whisper in the Wind. She’s thrilled to have wrangled VIP tickets to opening night; he’s unhappy because the anniversary falls on the night of the seventh game of the World Series, and he’s not a theater fan anyway. Truth be told, they’re both novices with this theater-going thing, and their wide-eyed naivete is charming in Pintello Comedy Theater’s production of Opening Night.

At the VIP reception before the show opens in the Charles Killian Theatre Noir Repertory Center (as pretentious a name as possible), the Tisdales recognize Michael Craig (James Swan, thoroughly maudlin and convincing), an out-of-work Shakespearean actor reduced to doing TV ads as Handy Andy for a hardware store. You can practically hear his teeth grinding with frustration as they fawn over the TV spots. Naturally they have no idea who the famous director Richard HydeFinch (Bruce Pember) is, nor his impatient girlfriend Cilla (Valerie Valenzuela), who has about reached the end of her rope with

her reluctant lover. The overwrought Hyde-Finch does his best patronizing tone with the newbies as he tries to wrestle his cast of two into shape for opening night. Meanwhile, things backstage aren’t going well. One of the two actors in the play-within-theplay shows up just seconds before the curtain goes up, and her lack of preparation is comically evident once it’s underway. The other (James Daniel Pearson as Clayton Fry) is affecting a very bad British accent when the appropriate sound would be Canadian farmer. But the Tisdales don’t know any better, and find the turmoil as entertaining as the show itself. Pintello Comedy Theater’s producers Rod and Marion Pintello have a soft spot for Canadian playwright Norm Foster, and his sprightly comedies show up regularly in the rotation. Director Whitney Pintello has a lot of fun with this bit of effervescence, and the cast’s delight in the silliness is evident as well. The best interactions between the characters come less from the obvious couples—Ouellette and Patereau as the Tisdales, Pember and Valenzuela as the director and girlfriend—than between young bartender/aspiring actor Tom Delaney (CJ Patereau) and Swan as the world-weary Craig. Jack teams up with Cilla for a bit of heartfelt sincerity. And Betsy Molchan is a hoot as the wildly overdressed young actress Libby Husniak, who arrives in a slinky beaded evening gown before she transforms herself into a Canadian farm girl. The action plays out against an effectively streamlined set of 1960s Space Age decor complete with martini bar. “Opening Night” by Norm Foster runs through April 6 at Pintello Comedy Theater, Gilroy Grange Hall. Tickets $20. For tickets and information, call 337.1599 or visit www.PintelloComedy.com.
