ind yourself in downtown San Juan Bautista, and you find yourself immersed in preserved historical landmarks and buildings. Though most of the town’s relics are known from California school books or movies, there are others just waiting to tell their stories to daily passersby.

One such enchanting building can be found on the northern end of town, at 31 Polk St. The Rozas House may be missed if visitors on Third Street stop short of perusing

past San Juan Bakery & Grocery, but the house’s unique and wooden features can attract any modern eye that spots it. “This house is like a rockstar,” says

current resident and co-owner Bruce Gilsenan. “Every day, even if it’s raining, people stop to take pictures and come looking in the window.” Much of the building’s intrigue stems from its rare layout and wooden structure. “The construction is very interesting because it’s ‘board on end’” without the use of studs, says co-owner Shawna Freels, Gilsenan’s sister. “And it has the lath and plaster concept, so there’s no true insulation.”

Built in 1856 by Chilean designer Bartolome Samit, the long, narrow house (made from local redwoods) also features six front-facing doors, as well as an interior courtyard—all part of its original structure, says Freels. According to the website www.historicwalkingtrail.com, the shape of the Rozas House (“with a long narrow series of rooms, each of which opening onto the street”) is a common mid-19th century California “vernacular form.” Gilsenan further explains that

sale on the property five years ago, where close to 200 people attended. “It really deteriorated the flooring,” she says. “We had a lot of heels that popped through the flooring and dents and stuff.” Freels posits that other than its construction, its original owners are the most interesting facets of the home. In 1875, Ambrosio Rozas Sr. purchased the property as a gift for his son, Ambrosio Jr., and his

new bride, Emelda Erasma Lugo. The young couple went on to raise 12 children in the home, and remained in the residence throughout their lives. After Ambrosio Jr. passed away in 1934, Emelda continued to live in the home until 1956, when she moved to San Francisco to live with her daughter. She later passed away at the age of 104. “Emelda lived in the home for 80 years; it’s a pretty amazing story,” Freels says.

Especially since, as Freels explains, the Rozas matriarch was raised in the convent school at Mission San Juan Bautista after the death of her parents and her aunt. “After her husband passed, she continued to live in the home and rented out rooms to various people at various times just to make ends meet,” Freels says. “Eventually she opened it up into a little halfway house, a little hotel sort of thing.” Terry Balz, a Rozas descendant, and her husband, Al, ➝ 4

each of these rooms have interior doors connecting them. “When I was a kid, I’d get on a skateboard and go all the way down,” he laughs. Built neither on sand nor rock, the house remains standing on the mudsill foundation it was originally placed on. “The house has no foundation; there isn’t cement underneath this,” Gilsenan explains. “Right underneath, it’s just dirt.” Freels recalls having an estate

purchased the house in the 1970s, and rented the rooms out to a real estate office, beauty salon, artist studio and boutique. “Periodically throughout the years, rooms had been rented out for various different things,” Freels adds. In 1977, Gilsenan’s and Freels’s parents, Ann and James “Scotty” Gilsenan, bought the property from the Balz family and used it as their residence. Scotty placed the home on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and lived at the residence until his death in 2012. Gilsenan and Freels are now co-owners of the property, with Gilsenan residing there. “I think the house was empty for about a year or so after my dad passed away,” he says. “I moved back here around 2013 or 2014. It was hard at first.” Rightfully so, as Gilsenan says

it holds many memories of his late father. “I’ll still tell my friends, ‘Hey, let’s go to my dad’s house,’” he says. The house also spawned a nonprofit organization, Rozas House Org., Inc., now in its third year of operation. “The reasoning behind developing a non-profit is to really to help promote San Juan Bautista’s early California history, retelling of the stories of early California history in San Juan Bautista and, of course, to help preserve our history,” Freels says. The non-profit, in partnership with San Juan Bautista Historical Society, the City of San Juan Bautista, and the San Juan Bautista Committee created the San Juan Bautista Historic Walking Trail two years ago. “It’s one of those projects that everyone in San Juan has always

It’s amazing how many people are on our website. So we’re just really trying to develop heritage tourism; those are the things that we really want to involve ourselves in, and to help preserve this incredible history we have here.”

Young cast heads up SB Stage Company’s latest production By JENNY ARBIZU

W

hat could possibly happen when a lion, zebra, hippo and giraffe all escape from the Central Park Zoo in New York City? Well, a handful of hilarity and a whole lot of madness to ensue, for sure. And San Benito Stage Company has a hand in bringing this entertaining story of Madagascar Jr. to Hollister audiences, opening on Friday, May 3 at the Sacred Heart Parish School gymnasium. “The kids are doing fantastic,”

says co-producer Adriana Ferry of the 37 cast members, ages 6 to 14 years old. “The cast is absolutely ready for opening night, and they will be practicing to perfect their skills for opening night all the way through closing night. The energy is high.” Based on the DreamWorks animated motion picture, Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr. follows Alex the Lion (Denzel Perez), Marty the Zebra (Derek Barnes II), Melman the Giraffe (Colin Ellis), Gloria the Hippo (Ashley Maupin), and a group of plotting penguins on an unexpected journey to the

madcap world of King Julien’s (Abbey Alford) Madagascar. Co-producer Denise McNett says “audiences should be ready to ‘move it, move it’ with the 27 lemurs shaking their tails on stage. The actors have been working very hard on creating the best show.” The production is directed by Ken Powell, choreographed by Allison Barnes and assistant choreographer Bridget Murphy, and vocal directed by Isabelle Menez. With this being San Benito Stage Company’s first production since the nonprofit organization left the Granada Theatre in February, Ferry and McNett are both thankful for the team of parents and volunteers who helped bring the mobile theater to the Sacred Heart Parish School gymnasium. “We are learning to travel with our stage set, props, and costumes,” Ferry says. “Fortunately, we have a fantastic group of parents and volunteers who are helping us adjust.” McNett says a special community service night show will be performed on May 11. “Discount tickets will be available for all community members who come in uniform, school spirit wear, or camp T-shirts,” she says. The discount price of $10 is available on a first-come, firstserved basis to the first 100 scouts, 4-H members, active or retired military, health care providers, and first responders. “Madagascar – A Musical Adventure Jr.” runs from May 3 to May 18 at Sacred Heart Parish School Gymnasium at 670 College St. in Hollister. Tickets are available for presale at Postal Graphics or by calling 636.0122. Purchase online at brownpapertickets.com or at the door. Tickets are $17 for adults; $14 seniors/students; $55 Group 4-Pack (advanced purchase only).

Nothing silly about psyllids Hard-to-see sapsuckers spread plant diseases By KATE RUSSELL

P

a psocid. Psocids are beneficial insects that feed on fungi. They differ from psyllids in that they have a narrow “neck and chewing mouthparts. Psyllids have strong preferences for particular host plants. While some psyllids prefer sweet peppers and chili peppers, other varieties will go after peaches and nectarines, while some will only feed on olive or pear trees, and yet other psyllid species will only feed on potato and tomato plants. The invasive Asian citrus psyllid carries huanglongbing, a deadly citrus disease. When a tree becomes infected, it must be destroyed. Asian citrus psyllids are most active April through June. Once psyllids appear in your garden, insecticidal soaps and yellow sticky sheets can be used to help control them. Parasitic wasps and pirate bugs help control psyllid populations, so avoid using broad-spectrum insecticides. Severely infested plants should be thrown in the trash. To prevent invasive psyllids from finding your garden, only buy pest-free plants from reputable nurseries, place new plants in quarantine, and do not bring plant products that may be infested into your state, community or yard. Because of the risks posed by invasive psyllids, any unrecognized psyllids should be taken to your agricultural commissioner or local County Extension Office for identification. Kate Russell is a UCCE Master Gardener in Santa Clara County. For information, visit mgsantaclara. ucanr.edu or call 408.282.3105 between 9:30am-12:30pm, Monday through Friday.

syllids are jumping plant lice that suck plant juices. There are more than 160 psyllid species in California, 140 of which are native. Psyllids are hard to see. Very often, you won't even know psyllids have arrived in your San Benito garden until tiny flecks of brown seem to leap away as you pass. Those jumping brown flecks are psyllids. One of the biggest problems associated with psyllids is their poop. After they have robbed your plants of valuable nutrients, they add insult to injury by excreting a large portion of the sap they stole and depositing on leaves. Known as honeydew, the excrement of sapsuckers is filled with sugar and other nutrients. Honeydew ends up being food for sooty mold and disease-carrying ants. Psyllid feeding can also spread viral diseases such as calico, bacterial diseases such as zebra chip, galls, leaf and bud discoloration and deformation, and premature leaf drop. Leaf distortions often look similar to peach leaf curl. Psyllid feeding also creates points of entry for other pests and diseases. Psyllids look like tiny cicadas or winged aphids, and are only onefifth of an inch long. They have tubular mouthparts, strong legs and short antennae. Adults hold their wings in a roof-like position. Nymphs are flattened and look a lot like soft-scale insects. Psyllid nymphs commonly produce waxy filaments or covers, called lerps. Lerps are made from wax and honeydew. Adult psyllids can fly, but most prefer to jump. If you see what you think is a psyllid run or fly away, it is probably an insect called

Seeing Dreams Come True... I started a career in Real Estate so I could help people make their dreams of owning a home come true. Owning your own home is one of everyone’s biggest dreams! And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downsizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true.
