4th Street Eatery opens in Hollister to rave reviews BY JENNY ARBIZU

hen Mark and Jeannette Pulido opened the doors to their new business on Friday, April 19, friends and family created a quaint crowd for its soft-opening weekend.

What was expected to be the same light crowd that Monday, though, was anything but. “I thought Monday we would say we’re open and tell people our hours— but we got hit so hard, it was like we were blindsided,” Jeannette recalled.

When a friend working at the San Benito County Superior Court told Jeannette about 100 jurors were there that morning, she said, “Send them our way,” not realizing the repercussions of her offer. “We were kicking out

sandwiches 45 minutes later; we had people out the door waiting to get in,” Jeannette said. Nightly runs to the store helped them through that first week, but now—more than a month later—“we’re getting in a rhythm and can kind of predict,” she said. “And if we get those large orders, we just ask if they call or email in advance.” There is a reason why 4th Street Eatery (appropriately named after its location at 330

Fourth St.) has already established a strong following—sitting at a prime location in downtown Hollister, the eatery offers customers a unique menu locals haven’t seen in town. “It was my husband that kind of kicked up that idea,” Jeannette said. “I thought it would do great because Hollister really doesn’t have something like what we have—a coffee/sandwich shop. I worked in Santa Cruz, and you

full-on restaurant,” Jeannette explained. “I don’t want to say we’re deli-style, but we wanted to keep things a little bit more simple.” Simple, but not short on quality. Along with Verve coffee, the eatery uses Le Boulanger bread for all its sandwiches. And other than its salads—which are prepared fresh every morning—nothing on the menu is premade. “That was our thing, making sure that we keep that fresh key on

everything we do here,” she said. “That is something that is across the board on our menu.” Customers will notice recognizable names for some of the lunch sandwiches, too. All of the sandwiches, most of which Mark says were named by Jeannette, pull some local signifiers into their monikers. The Benito sandwich, for instance, is made with pesto, chicken, artichoke hearts and havarti cheese on

panini bread. And the Baler features ham, turkey, salami, provolone cheese and Swiss cheese on a french roll. Older locals, specifically those of Mexican heritage, may recognize the meat in the Old Timer sandwich as one from their youth: fried bologna. “Growing up as kids, that was literally like a Mexican steak,” Mark said. see coffee sandwich shops everywhere there on Pacific Avenue.” Freshly prepared breakfast burritos and breakfast sandwiches are served from opening until 10:30am, while a variety of sandwiches, hotdogs, paninis, wraps and salads are sold from 11am to closing. The eatery also sells bagels and has a full coffee bar in the morning, featuring coffee from Verve Coffee Roasters. “We are definitely not that

‘We’re going to be definitely throwing twists on the menu and add specials to keep it interesting.’

Mark says, is “an old-school cut— and they’re thick pieces.” To invoke nostalgia, the menu includes Spam breakfast burritos and sandwiches. San Benito High School graduates and sweethearts, Mark and Jeannette consider opening the establishment their biggest business adventure, though they ran an apricot business, Pulido Farms, and their three children have a cattle company, Midway Cattle (with the first three initials taken from their children’s names: Mark, Isabelle and Daniel). “This is our first time doing something like this,” Jeannette said. Mark continues to run a landscaping business, while also making the breakfast burritos every morning. And Jeannette, along with Trisha Gila, creates the lunch sandwiches. Marissa Frutos, who has worked

at the eatery since its opening, said that though it’s been a busy month, she has loved coming to work. “The environment is good,” Frutos said. “There’s regular customers already; I’ve gotten to know a lot of them.” And customers will immediately find an addition to the eatery that Mark says, it had to include. “I’m a veteran,” says Mark, who served in the US Air Force from 1991 to 1996. “The only thing I wanted in this building was a flag. I had my son hold it up and place it on the wall, and it seemed perfect. And then I said, ‘You know what? Wouldn’t it be cool to dedicate this to [veterans]?’ If there’s anything I came up with in this whole shop, that was probably the best idea I had.” Veterans can be honored by bringing photos into the eatery (and by writing their names on

the back), to be placed on the wall along with the flag. “You see these veterans when they walk in; they come and they stare at it,” Jeannette said. “There’s a connection.” As for the future of the eatery, Jeannette hopes to be expanding the menu soon. “We don’t want it to get stagnant at any point,” she added. “We’re going to be definitely throwing twists on the menu and add specials to keep it interesting.” 4th Street Eatery is open Monday-Thursday, 7am to 4pm (closing Wednesdays at 3pm during Farmers Market season), Fridays 7am to 5pm and Saturdays 7 am to 3pm. GETTING OUT

Spring on Mount Diablo

Ron Erskine

IN BLOOM Wind poppies are abundant throughout Mount Diablo.

MAY 31, 2019

Wildflowers brighten trails this time of year

12

By RON ERSKINE

T

he browning of our hills is underway. Spring is fading, and summer is on the way. If you are not ready to give up cool day hikes among blooming wildflowers, there are places to go where spring lingers. Mount Diablo is one. Mount Diablo is one of the Bay Area's most visible landmarks. It is said that from its summit, one can see more of the Earth’s surface than from the top of any mountain in the world except Mount Kilimanjaro. Yet, for all of its notoriety, few

of us venture up the mountain. We pass it again and again on our way out of town thinking, “I gotta go up there someday.” On a late May day, I decided “someday” had arrived. When spring’s vitality drains from the hills surrounding our valley, it is time to start chasing it up mountain slopes. At nearly 4,000 feet, the summit of Mount Diablo is the same elevation as Yosemite Valley. Would I find a high mountain landscape within easy driving distance? I did. At the top of the mountain, I stepped from the car into a rush of

brisk mountain air, a good deal cooler than the tepid temperatures in the valleys below. Under ideal conditions on the summit observation platform, one can see Lassen Peak, Yosemite Valley and the Farallon Islands. While not perfect, the morning was clear and the view amazing. Toward every compass point, the Earth plunges down for a vertigo-inducing experience. It was early and quiet in the visitor center, though the volunteer there said school buses were on the way. I snagged a park map and quickly noticed an irresistible sequence of trails encircling the top portion of the mountain. Though it was late May, spring was still busting out on the high flanks of Mount Diablo. Lush flower gardens reminded me of early spring in our local hills, including a number of flowers we don't often see here. Among the usual California poppies and Chinese houses, bright red larkspur and brilliant wind poppies brightened the trail. On the drier chaparral covered slopes, I passed a chaparral pea shrub awash in purple blossoms. Look down, beautiful flowers; look up, a constantly changing succession of distant views: the distant Sierra across the Central Valley, the Sacramento River delta, the entire Bay Area. As I looped around the mountain, the show never lagged. The seven-mile loop I walked is called the Grand Loop. It goes out the North Peak and Bald Ridge Trails and returns via Meridian Ridge and Deer Flat Roads. It is a moderate hike, but you will remember that you are alive as you make the final ascent back toward your car. It looks like summer near home, but it is still spring on Mount Diablo. It is probably just as lovely in the Sierra foothills, but at Mount Diablo, you can go to the high country and be home for dinner.

innabar, one of the most established brands in Santa Clara County, is under new ownership. What began three decades ago as the dream of Cinnabar’s founder, Tom Mudd (1942-2007), continues in the capable hands of Ron Mosley, the original vineyard manager for the Santa Cruz Mountain brand, to whom Mudd’s heirs recently sold the brand. Tasked with clearing the land and planting vineyards, Mosley was hired by Mudd in June 1983. He built the original winery, now the home of Domaine Eden, where he helped make the first barrels of Cinnabar’s cabernet in 1986. “Exactly 36 years later, I am reconnecting with this brand that is so dear to my heart,” said Mosley, who managed Cinnabar’s property until it was sold in 2007. “I was there by Tom’s side to help make his vision

SENIORS

National Appreciation Day

SHOWING GRATITUDE Expressing appreciation for each other can be a positive, affirming experience.

MAY 31, 2019

A change of perspective is healthy at any age

14

By CHERYL HUGUENOR

I

t was out of sheer desperation that I invented National Appreciation Day. This happened here at Live Oak Adult Day Services, about a decade ago. It was one of those weeks when almost all our volunteer entertainers and guest speakers had to cancel due to illness or car trouble, and the seniors here were tired of filling in the gaps with bingo and other games. I hung up the phone from another cancellation, sat everyone down in a big circle, set up a big white board and announced that it was National Appreciation

Day, when we are all supposed to say what we appreciate about each other. I was flying by the seat of my pants, making it up as I went along, but the seniors loved expressing all the qualities they admired about each other. I made official-looking certificates that listed for each person all that we appreciated about them. It was such a positive, affirming experience that we have celebrated National Appreciation Day every year. So it was last month that I announced that the special day had rolled around again. I was curious

how it would go this time, because we had a participant, who has since moved out of the area, who seemed to specialize in finding fault with everyone. He was always either too warm or too cold; his coffee did not have enough sugar in it, then it had too much; the person sitting next to him was speaking too loudly or was ignoring him—you get the picture. The way he narrowed his eyes at me when I told him we were all going to say what we appreciated about each other made me sure that he knew I was making up the whole thing. He did not add anything to the discussion as we went around the room praising each person. I swear he even rolled his eyes a time or two. Then it was his turn to be on the hot seat. I waited a bit anxiously, afraid that no one would think of something they appreciated about him, and it might fall to me to give a few hints. But the good vibrations they were generating flowed over him as well. One person mentioned that they appreciated his honesty, another said that she thought he was a snappy dresser, and another mentioned that he had a very nice family. He was literally aglow from the unexpected praise. The rest of the day went so smoothly, too, with no complaints about coffee, room temperature or other people. National Appreciation Day might be a fictional holiday to most people, but here at Live Oak it has become an annual tradition. There is something so heartwarming about the process of putting words to the positive feelings we have about others. Even those who do not think they merit much praise find that they have more redeeming qualities than they may think. A change of perspective is healthy at any age. Cheryl Huguenor is the program director at Live Oak Adult Day Services in Gilroy. For information, visit liveoakadultdaycare.org.
