EDITOR’S NOTE
Nostalgic memories Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is one of those timeless classics that many people are familiar with, but don’t remember much of the details. While I never read the book, I do remember the basics of the film—the flying car and Dick Van Dyke—but little else. San Benito Stage Company is bringing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to the local community beginning July 12, a perfect opportunity to wax

nostalgic for the musical while hopefully introducing new audiences to it. For this week’s cover story (page 6), I spoke with director Dena Gregory, who describes some of the challenges in leading the 34-actor and propheavy musical. She also remembers being afraid of the Child Catcher in the film, and she is probably not alone. ERIK CHALHOUB

SAY YES TO ADVENTURE San Benito Stage Company presents Chitty Chitty Bang Bang BY ERIK CHALHOUB
T
he story of the car that can fly, float and do whatever is needed to save the day has been a children’s classic for generations. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was written in 1964 by Ian Fleming for his son. Considering that Fleming is the creator of that ultra-suave, über-British spy with a license to kill who goes by the name Bond, James Bond, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was quite a departure for the author. The story follows an inventor named Caractacus Pott, who purchases and renovates an old car. The car begins to take a life of its own, and shenanigans follow, with Pott’s family dealing with everything from traffic jams to gangsters who own an ammunition dump. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was made into a feature film in 1968, starring Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes. It eventually found its way to the stage, debuting in
London in 2002 and Broadway in 2005. Add another premiere to the production’s storied history: San Benito Stage Company is bringing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to Hollister audiences July 12-27. Dick Van Dyke probably won’t be in attendance, but he hasn’t confirmed either way. The San Benito performance is produced by Jeanine Gonzalez and directed by Dena Gregory. “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is a funny, energetic musical that has something for all ages,” Gonzalez said. “It's a perfect family show.” Gregory is back for her second go-round as director with the San Benito Stage Company, previously directing The Grunch in 2018. A teacher at Southside School who directs productions for the school, she said she began planning for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in November. ➝ 10 JULY 12, 2019

Gregory, who remembers watching the film as a child and being afraid of the Child Catcher, said she has been studying numerous other theater performances of the production, noting that “very few versions are identical.” “I can’t tell you how many YouTube clips I’ve seen,” she said. Among the challenges of directing the musical are the props themselves. One prop in particular is perhaps the most important: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang itself. The musical calls for three separate cars: the original Chitty, the modified version and the Baron’s car. Fortunately, the Hollister VFW Post #9242 stepped up and constructed the cars. “I’m so happy to have other groups in the community help out,” Gregory said. “That was a pretty daunting prop. It’s the key character in this story practically.”
Auditions began in May, and 34 actors were chosen, with the youngest clocking in at 8 years old. “We definitely have some veterans of the stage who really bring their experience and have been wonderful helping guide the younger set,” Gregory said. San Benito Stage Company veteran Issy Menez is in her fourth production with the company, and this time plays Truly Scrumptious. The character, who is the love interest of Caractacus Pott, is the daughter of a wealthy sweet factory owner who joins the adventure of the Pott family. After rehearsing as Truly Scrumptious for a month, Menez said she enjoys the musical portions her character is involved with. “Those are really fun and pretty songs to sing,” she said. “I also really like the character’s easy-going, fun personality.”
For the audience, be prepared to feel some nostalgia, Menez said, adding that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang will bring back fond memories of childhood. Menez, a Hollister native, said her interest in theater grew gradually from a young age, when she received vocal training and later tried her hand at acting. She is currently working toward earning a master’s degree from Liberty University, studying to become a counselor, and noted the challenge of juggling both rehearsals and her coursework. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the third of the four-show lineup for San Benito Stage Company’s 20th anniversary season. “The audience can expect to be entertained with song, dance and funny dialog,” Gonzalez said. San Benito Stage Company will
present Chitty Chitty Bang Bang July 12-27 at the San Benito High School Auditorium, 1220 Monterey St. in Hollister. Friday and Saturday performances will be at 7pm, with Sunday shows at 2pm. Admission is $15 general and $14 for seniors and students. SBSC members receive discounted tickets. Advance tickets are available at Mars Hill Coffeehouse, Postal Graphics or online at brownpapertickets.com. Tickets are also available in the lobby prior to each performance. t is a well-known phrase among foodies and wine lovers—food pairings. Meant to enhance the taste buds, food paired with wine is a common finding at wineries and food festivals. But food paired with art and music? Such an idea of designing food to complement music is being brought to locals by Credo Studio in San Juan Bautista owner Ramona Hill, and Santa Cruzbased producer Dave Svec with the Women of Song Gourmet Series, beginning at the Credo Studio on Saturday, July 13. “It is quite the unique experience to have food and wine designed to
complement a singer-songwriter's original material,” Svec said. And it’s one that was derived after Svec met Hill at a fundraiser her studio was hosting four months ago. “There was an African musician there, the president of the nonprofit was doing African barbecue, and we had a table where we were selling African jewelry,” Hill said. “So it was, just coincidentally, an event where we were pairing music with the art and the food.” It was an idea Svec had once envisioned and designed for a food festival, but never brought to fruition. “So when he came through and
saw me doing that, his entire vision was sparked again,” Hill said. “So that was the birth of this series.” The series features female singer-songwriters—each performance including original recorded material from each woman, and all enhanced by the pairing of wine and hors d’oeuvres. Alisa Fineman will kick off the series on July 13. Voted “Best Folk Musician” four years running by Monterey Bay’s then-Coast Weekly, Fineman will be joined by co-artist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Kimball Hurd, featuring songs spanning over the course of her three-decade career. Visual artist and singer-songwriter, Anne Whitehurst, will entice audiences on Saturday, Aug. 3 with her approach of fusing visual art with music. An array of multimedia and musical pieces will be presented, and examples of Whitehurst’s artwork will be displayed and possibly recreated. Selections from her new EP Castle of Hearts, produced by Joe Craven, will be featured. The band, Low Noon— featuring Whitehurst as a rhythm guitarist—will also perform a variety of covers. Singer-songwriter, Socorra, will close out the series with her bluesdriven indie rock sound on Saturday, Sept. 14. The San Josebased artist has opened for acts such as Blues Traveler and Fantastic Negrito, and Content Magazine has deemed her a “...gutsy blues voice...familiar but unique, and undeniable in its smoky richness.’ “ The Women of Song Gourmet Series will be held at Credo Studio, 1 Polk St. in San Juan Bautista. Concerts begin at 4pm; tickets are $35 per event. Hors d’oeuvres (provided by San Juan Bautista cafe, Lolla) and wine are included in the ticket price. ix sisters, some more estranged than others, must face the crisis of their widowed mother behaving badly at her nursing home in Belles: The Reunion, a comedy/drama by Mark Dunn running this summer at Limelight Actors Theater in Gilroy. But the immediate issue— Mom disrobing in the community room—is just the starting point for this mostly-comic show in which all of the dialogue is performed by actors on the phone with each other. Over the course of the show, each sister’s personality unfolds, each sibling’s relationship is revealed, and what you thought was happening early on turns into something unexpected. Director and theater co-founder
Kevin Heath has drawn together six talented actors to play the Walker sisters—Rosalind Farotte as Peggy, Donna M. Knippen as Audrey, Christine McElroy as Roseanne, Christy Wait as Sherry, Christine Wanish as Paige and Betsy Andrade as Aneece. Each actor manages to carve out, in her eight-foot-square chunk of the stage, a distinct persona in locales as diverse as New York, Santa Fe, Georgia, Iowa and Mississippi. The family is centered on eldest sister Peggy, who has been the “in charge of Mom” sister for 30 years in Memphis, Tenn., and who keeps up with her sisters’ changes in address and marital status across the miles. She’s also lost all her money to a con artist. Her sister Sherry is the flighty one, prone to tropical-print caftans and too

much affection toward her sister’s husband. Roseanne has been married three times to pastors, which she calls “dancing-bear narcissists.” Audrey’s been drowning her grief in the bottle for decades over the deaths of her son and her husband; even her hospital gig as Bimbles the Clown gives her no relief. Paige’s marriage is on the rocks as well, in an unexpected way. And Aneece, out of contact with her family for four years, is a lesbian in a relationship crisis of her own. The show’s gimmick—that none of the women is in the same room with any of her sisters—makes the show very dialogue-heavy, which also means that nearly all the character development comes from what the sisters say to one another. You’ll get clues based on their
costumes and the small spaces representing their homes, but most of it comes through their phone calls. And sometimes the conversations they have with others outside the family can be as revealing as those within the group. Aneece, played with subtle resolve by Andrade, shows her pain more when she talks with her soon-to-be-ex than with her sisters. Peggy’s revelations of her own dysfunctional relationship within the nuclear family tread on familiar ground. “Belles: The Reunion” runs through July 14 at Limelight Actors Theater at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St., Gilroy. Tickets are $25. For information, call 408.472.3292 or visit www.LimelightActorsTheater.com.
