One of the most iconic institutions in San Benito County is celebrating its sesquicentennial, and is looking to the public for support. In this week’s cover story (page 4), writer Jenny Arbizu visited the Hollister United Methodist Church on the corner of Fifth and Monterey streets to learn about the church’s
history for its 150th anniversary. The church is also undergoing a $150,000 capital campaign to renovate its 110-year-old building. Funds are also needed to preserve its historic pipe organ, a crucial part of service every Sunday. ERIK CHALHOUB

HISTORY
S
tanding in the center of its sanctuary, it’s easy to become engulfed by the music resonating within the walls of the Hollister United Methodist Church. It’s a sound like no other in San Benito County; one that parishioners hear every Sunday at the church—and it all comes from its pipe organ.
“It was installed in 1947 by a company out of San Francisco,” said the church’s Leadership Chairman George Lewis. The organ—the only one in the county—is still in its original form, thus needing constant care from its continued use. “We have it serviced annually by the company that installed it,” Lewis said. “Right now it ➝6

is in good working condition. If we wanted to rebuild it, it would cost around $100,000. So our goal is to try to maintain it.” As is the church’s goal with additional fixtures of the 110-year-old building’s structure—located on the corner of Fifth and Monterey streets. With the HUMC celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, Lewis said now seemed like the best time to begin a capital campaign “to keep it beautiful and structural” and to ensure the historic preservation of the church. Local residents will find the history behind the church is just as spectacular as the red brick and mortar its built with. Years before its current sanctuary was erected, two Methodist churches were actually established in Hollister in early 1869: Methodist Church North and Methodist Church South (the national church split in 1844
due to slavery issues).
Methodist Church North held its first church service on Jan. 19, 1869—which is the date HUMC marks its anniversary with. “That first service was actually held in Colonel W. W. Hollister’s home,” said HUMC’s historian Sharry Jones. Colonel Hollister would host both churches often, explained Jones, alternating services until the two sanctuaries were constructed. By 1872, the construction of both churches was complete, with Methodist Church North located at the corner of Fifth and Monterey
streets, and Methodist Church South at its current location. In 1909, the original building at Monterey and Fifth streets was moved southward on the lot, and the current sanctuary and Sunday school rooms were built in 1910. After it moved, the original sanctuary was first converted to a gymnasium (“Coach Andy Hardin actually had classes there,” Jones said), and then ultimately became the current church social hall. In 1937, the Hollister churches merged and began using the building on Monterey and Seventh streets for their services. Thereafter, “the national church became one in 1939,” Jones explained. And the Methodist Church North sanctuary was sold in 1942. It later became the parking lot of Black-Cooper-Sander Funeral Home. Over the years, changes and additions to the church’s structure have helped it transform into what it is today. And the current congregation hopes to keep it that way. In honor of the church’s 150th anniversary, the church’s goal is to raise $150,000 for renovation and maintenance. Lewis said there are four things listed on their capital campaign: maintenance of the pipe organ, regrouting of the brick exterior, refurbishing of the stained glass windows and reparation of the roof. Donations have already started coming in. “We actually applied to the Community Foundation and received a matching grant in June,” ➝ 8

ICONIC STRUCTURE Hollister United Methodist Church’s architecture
is unique in California.
Lewis said. “I also went before City Council two weeks ago and made a presentation. I got donations right at the meeting.” The church also hopes to receive support from the San Benito County Chamber of Commerce and Hollister residents. “We're trying to get the word out,” he said. “We’re doing mailings to people—people who were involved with the church or whose families were involved in the church—and of course our church members who have received this or will receive this.” The church’s 72-year-old pipe organ, donated by the Hawkins family in 1947, is still in good working condition. However, some pipes have been replaced over the years, and with more than 100 pipes and the hefty cost to replace the organ, Lewis expects more replacements are to come. “The air to every pipe is controlled by flap valve, which is leather,” he said. “Now you realize those valves are now 75 years old or older. At some point we're going to lose more of those.” Lewis said the blower on the pipe organ will also need to be replaced in the next five years. “And that’s about $3,000 to replace,” he projected. One feature of the church, which passersby can admire at night, is the stained glass windows. “All of the panes are handpainted,” Lewis said. But without the inside lighting to reveal the detailed panes, the 110-year-old windows can’t be seen
during daylight hours due to the darkened protective seal on the windows. “We will do any necessary repair work on the glass and then put some type protective glass back up,” Lewis said. “It’ll be clear, so you can see right through it.” Lewis said the roofs of the sanctuary and social hall also need repair, and the bricks on the exterior walls (“It’s a wooden structure with a brick facade,” Lewis said) need regrouting. “Many of the bricks with mortar have died, and some are loose,” he said. One issue with the bricks, which was already dealt with 30 years ago, couldn’t be fixed. “In 1943, ivy was planted on the outside of the church from cuttings from the College of the Pacific,” Jones said. “In 1989, it was removed because we found out that it was damaging the mortar between the bricks.” Ivy or no ivy, the church has a kind of elegance rarely seen in nearby cities. “Sharry found that this is an eastern design of churches of that time, and somebody decided that they wanted to do this really classy,” Lewis said. “It’s very unique in California.” And he’s hoping donors will see that, as well. The Hollister United Methodist Church is located at 521 Monterey St. For information on the capital campaign, call George Lewis at (831) 628-3305.

STAFF REPORT
L
imelight Actors Theater, which was in danger of shutting down following the retirement of its co-owners, will be under new management. South Valley Civic Theatre will assume management of Limelight following the end of its current show, The Hallelujah Girls, on Dec. 1. Scott Lynch, SVCT board president and a familiar presence on both Limelight's and SVCT's stages, said he looks forward to SVCT's growth and expansion to Gilroy. "As we begin our second half-century of providing live theater in the South Valley, we are excited about this opportunity to offer SVCT performances at this second venue while
preserving the unique characteristics of Limelight Actors Theater," he said. For the past nine years, Limelight Actors Theater has staged shows at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St. Limelight was the brainchild of actor Kevin Heath, who created the theater company in part to entice people to the center. After nine years as a member of the Gilroy Arts Alliance and Limelight’s executive director—and after 43 Limelight productions—Heath and his husband and theater company co-owner Alan Obata are moving away. "Although it was a difficult decision to close Limelight; we couldn’t be happier with SVCT’s decision to continue the brand of theater we
created,” Heath said. “The community will be very pleased with what they will experience with the next generation of Limelight.” SVCT just completed its 50th season. While SVCT is the resident theater company of the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, its roots are in Gilroy. In 1969, Gilroy Community Theatre was established by a group of residents and volunteers. It was not until 1985 that it changed its name to South Valley Civic Theatre and expanded performance locations beyond Gilroy to include Hollister and Morgan Hill. SVCT settled in Morgan Hill in 2003, after completion of the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse. With its small black box stage, Limelight usually produces three shows a year, a mix of comedies and dramas. Meanwhile in the Playhouse, SVCT’s annual season features five productions, typically a mix of family and adult musicals, teen and children’s musicals, and a comedy or drama. With the acquisition of a second venue in Gilroy, SVCT anticipates continuing with a combined mix of eight plays and musicals. SVCT plans to retain the features of Limelight, such as the small cabaret theater experience and the option for attendees to bring their own dinner. “Limelight has been my home away from home for nine years,” said actress Rosalind Farotte. “It has been a haven for fine theater, great camaraderie. and enduring friendships. I was greatly saddened by the loss of our leaders, Alan and Kevin, and the apparent demise of Limelight Actors Theater. However, I am delighted that South Valley Civic Theater has decided to step in and hold this theater and its family together. Under the direction of SVCT, Limelight will continue to be a unique and treasured part of our artistic community.”

NEW SERIES The Ghaderi-Focks Duo will perform in Morgan Hill as a benefit for the upcoming Coyote Creek Music Festival.
Concerts to support inaugural festival NOVEMBER 22, 2019
By SUSAN L. RIFE

T
he first in a series of concerts to benefit the inaugural Coyote Creek Music Festival will feature the Ghaderi-Focks Duo Nov. 23 in Morgan Hill. The duo—violinist Kimia Ghaderi and pianist Andrew Focks— are members of the artistic advisory committee to the chamber music festival, which will make its debut next June with three weekends of performances by more than a dozen professional classical musicians from around the country. The festival has its roots in the now-defunct NorCal Music Festival, which was based at Advent Lutheran Church for two years. Kyle Jones, music director at Advent Lutheran, is the festival director.
The festival’s mission is to partner with diverse communities through transformative musical performances, relevant and inclusive programming, and accessible education opportunities, particularly in the south Santa Clara Valley. The upcoming concert, and the festival, will be “a great way to introduce people who don’t go to San Jose or San Francisco” for classical performances, Ghaderi said. She is a Morgan Hill native who graduated from Live Oak High School in 2008. “Kimia’s and Andrew’s performance will certainly establish Coyote Creek Music’s commitment to excellence in all we do,” Jones said. “Morgan Hill is a great community and great communities deserve great music and art. This concert is only
the first of many more that lead up to the June festival.” The festival itself will run June 12-20. Monthly chamber music performances beginning in January will be “mutually beneficial for our organization as well as the community with which we are partnering,” Jones said. Pre-festival concerts are designed to create visibility in the south valley for the Coyote Creek Music Festival, expand the community’s opportunities for cultural enrichment and generate revenue for the festival itself, said Jones. Ghaderi and Focks will perform Mozart’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in G Major, K 379; Clara Schumann’s Romance, Op. 22; Sarasate’s “Romania Andaluza;” Kreisler/Dvorak’s “Slavonic Fantasy;” Saint-Saens/Liszt’s “Danse Macabre;” and Grieg’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in C minor. Ghaderi and Focks are music professors at the Cleveland Institute of Music and have collaborated since 2012. They performed at the 2018 and 2019 NorCal Festival, which presented both student and professional musicians in chamber and orchestral ensembles. Ghaderi is a graduate of Rice University in Houston and the Cleveland Institute. She teaches violin at the institute and is violinist for the Akron Symphony and the Grand Rapids Symphony. Focks teaches piano at Cleveland State University and piano and music theory at the Cleveland Institute. He studied at Florida State University, Rice and the Cleveland Institute. Admission to the Ghaderi-Focks recital is free, with donations accepted for next year’s festival. The evening also will include a presentation about the 2019-2020 festival season. The Ghaderi-Focks Duo will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 23 at Advent Lutheran church, 16870 Murphy Ave., Morgan Hill. Admission is free; donations accepted.
