A look back at some of the top San Benito stories of 2019

BY ERIK CHALHOUB he final year of the 2010s in San Benito County had its share of centennials and even more sesquicentennials.

The city of history, San Juan Bautista marked 150 years since its incorporation in 2019. At the same time, the Hollister United Methodist Church also celebrated

its 15th decade.

Gavilan College, meanwhile, reached 100 years of educating students throughout San Benito County and the greater area.

In this final issue of the year, San Benito magazine is looking back at five of the top stories from its pages in 2019.

included a pancake breakfast at the Texas Masonic Lodge, followed by a plaque dedication given by E. Clampers Vitus to commemorate the former SJB Volunteer Fire Department. A parade also marched down Third Street.

The next day, more than 20 breweries and wineries hosted a “sip and stroll” downtown.

The orchard in the middle of downtown was also spruced up this past year.

The orchard, which was once the home of a livery stable used by the Coast Line Stage Co. in the late 1800s, was planted in the 1940s. In its heyday, roughly 50 trees were on the property, including pomegranates, lemons, pears, plums and more.

Hollister-based Lee Landscaping completed the work later in the year after beginning in July. The first phase removed dead trees, as well as installed drip irrigation throughout the orchard. A wood chip mulch was installed to prevent weeds from sprouting.

In addition, new gold granite ADA-accessible pathways were constructed through the middle of the orchard and along its perimeter.

The first phase cost $70,000, all paid for by the Plaza History Association.

Many other events throughout the year had a sesquicentennial theme.

Educational milestone Speak to anybody in San Benito County, and chances are they either attended Gavilan College or know someone who has.

2019 was a chance for alumni and past teachers and staff to get together and reminisce on their time at the college, which turned 100 this year.

The college’s sold-out gala in early September kicked off a year of special events that will lead up to its 100th graduating class in May 2020.

Guests of the gala took a nostalgic stroll down Sycamore Lane, where stations were themed to each decade featuring food, wine, music, students in period costume and more.

Tradition gets new look El Teatro Campesino’s annual holiday productions in Mission San Juan Bautista, a tradition for more than 40 years, came to an “abrupt end,” the theater company announced in August.

Earlier in 2019, the Mission replaced its old pews with new ones, which were bolted to the floor for safety and stability. The plays’ ➝8

But the company didn’t let the setback deter them.

ETC moved its production of La Pastorela to the ETC Playhouse on Fourth Street, which caused director Kinan Valdez and crew to completely reimagine it.

“We had to return to the intention behind the original choices made many years ago,” Valdez said in an earlier interview. “And we had to revisit some of the original ideas that shaped some of the staging, the scenic design, and the storytelling. We had to weigh everything and say, ‘OK, we’re going in this direction.’ In that case, it has been somewhat of a blessing. The show now has to stand on its own, and it has to be a resonant experience, both energetically and spiritually.”

La Pastorela wrapped up its 2019 run on Dec. 22.

Historic church looks to the future The Hollister Methodist Church celebrated its 150th year of services in 2019, and took the opportunity to begin a capital campaign to restore its iconic downtown building.

The building, located at the corner of Fifth and Monterey streets, was built in 1909.

Over the years, changes and additions to the church’s structure have helped it transform into what it is today. The church’s goal

is to raise $150,000, which will go toward maintenance of the pipe organ, regrouting of the brick exterior, refurbishing of the stained glass windows and reparation of the roof.

The church’s 72-year-old pipe organ is still in good condition, but its more than 100 pipes will need to be replaced sooner rather than later, which is a hefty cost.

Ostrich farm opens Here’s a funky story that doesn’t happen often.

The Gilroy Ostrich Farm, the only such farm dedicated to the world’s largest birds on the Central Coast, celebrated its grand opening in August.

Located on Pacheco Pass Highway near the intersection of San Felipe Road, 20 ostriches have a home on 114-acre property. The farm has proven a hit with families, as children marvel at the nine-feettall birds that can weigh more than 300 pounds.

Owner Dan Nelson is embarking on a new venture with the ostrich farm. It’s also unique to the area, as the closest others are located in Los Angeles and Solvang.

“I love animals,” he said in an earlier interview. “I wanted to open something to the public that would be educational not only for kids, but for adults as well. There’s nothing like this in South County.”

The bitter root dandelions are close cousins, while chicory's distant cousins include sunflowers, artichokes and yarrow.

Also known as cornflower, bachelor’s buttons, coffeeweed, blue daisy and wild endive, chicory’s flowers are composite, and leaves are normally toothed or lobed. Plants grow 10 to 40 inches tall. Flowers appear July through October.

How to grow chicory In our planting zone (9b), chicory is a cool season crop that can be started in January and February for an early summer crop, and again in July or August for an early winter crop. This gives the seeds time to get started before the weather turns too hot or too cold.

Summer's heat causes chicory to bolt, but a light frost actually adds just a touch of sweetness. Seeds should be planted a quarter-inch deep and thinned to 12 inches apart. Avoid overhead watering, as the leaves are prone to rotting.

hicory root coffee may inspire thoughts of pastry and jazz, but this rugged roadside weed has a place in local gardens and landscapes.

Chicory is a woody perennial that comes in many different varieties, depending on the cultivar used: roots (var. sativum) and leaves (var. foliosum) are the most common. Chicory, occurring naturally, can indicate compacted soil. Luckily, its deep taproot helps break up compacted soil, plus it’s drought tolerant!

Chicory as food Chicory is a highly versatile plant.

It’s slightly bitter leaves are used in salads, the buds can be blanched, and the taproots are frequently

roasted and ground up as a coffee substitute. You can reduce the bitterness by changing the cooking water two or three times. Roots are harvested before flowering stems emerge. These roots can be cooked and eaten the same as carrots or parsnips, ground into flour for bread or used as a coffee substitute. Plus, chicory contains twice as much of the cancer-fighting, heart-healthy polyphenols found in spinach.

Chicory description A member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), chicory (Cichorium intybus) is one of those large, gregarious groups that may surprise you. For example, curly endive, Belgian endive and radicchio are all types of chicory. Lettuce and

Chicory pests and diseases Despite its rugged nature, there are some pests and diseases that can impact chicory. Bacterial soft rot, damping off disease, fusarium wilt, white mold, anthracnose and downy mildews are all diseases that attack chicory. Aphids, cabbage loopers, beetles, leaf miners, thrips, and slugs and snails may feed on your chicory plants.

Chicory grows like a weed. Once established, you can pretty much ignore it until you decide to harvest whatever part you have a hankering for. And, hey, even the flowers are edible!

ilroy Gardens is celebrating its 20th season in 2020.

As with any milestone, memories are sure to come up—and the park is hoping to capitalize on that.

Gilroy Gardens is looking for memories from visitors to the horticulture park over the last two decades.

“We invite you to post your favorite photos or video from Gilroy Gardens and share any special memories you have of this very special place,” the park posted on its website. “We're collecting as much as we can to create memory spots throughout the park.”

All submissions must be in digital form, in as high resolution as possible.

Older print photos should be scanned, and videos should be no longer than three minutes. Each household can submit up to three photos or videos and up to three favorite stories from the last 20 years at Gilroy Gardens.

And, of course, a party.

“We had a small, wonderful reception with everyone having a great time, sharing stories, nibbling on yummy appetizers from Mama Mia's, and of course, tasting wines, including new releases of Pinot Noir,” Fedotova said. “Local new flower shop (Real Flower) graciously brought us a beautiful autumn flower arrangement for the event.”

People wrote their memories on Lightpost postcards, along with photographs representing their favorite memories of the year. They plan to bury it under the vines along with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon, when it’s less muddy.

They plan to do it every year.

Roguenant, shared their favorite holiday traditions. He likes Pinot Noir with Alaskan halibut topped with wild mushrooms and a reduction sauce with capers.

Said Fedotova, “No holiday table in Russia goes without Olivier salad, a Russian version of potato salad.”

Made with ham or bologna, pickles and peas, it should pair nicely with Lightpost’s Russian River Pinot Noir.

Karen Seeker of Seeker Vineyard said their Christmas day usually begins with brunch featuring Belgian waffles paired with their sparkling rosé or Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay. “Christmas isn’t Christmas without homemade fudge, which we enjoy with our 2016 Grandiflora (Syrah and Cabernet blend),” she said.

On New Year’s Eve, they always toast with one of their sparklings, at midnight New York time.
