Healthy
new year
Turn of the decade can inspire people to get in shape, both physically and financially BY ERIK CHALHOUB
JANUARY 10, 2020
‘N 2
ew year, new you”—January is the time when this cliché returns to popular culture. The turn of the year represents a time for rejuvenation, a new beginning, or “out with the old, in with the new,” as the other cliché goes. But for some people, a cliché may be all it takes to ditch bad habits and get started on a healthier path. And 2020 represents something that happens every 10 years: the beginning of a new decade. That alone may inspire more people to rethink smoking that cigarette, cutting down on their junk food intake or dusting off that piece of exercise equipment. San Benito County and beyond has those people covered.
Physical health A workout doesn’t have to be intense to be beneficial. Sometimes all it takes is just a walk before, during and after work. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four American adults sit for more than eight hours a day, which can lead to increased blood pressure and lower metabolic rates, among other issues. Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities in this region to walk in the scenery of natural beauty. California State Parks recently celebrated its 10th annual First Day Hikes, which promote healthy lifestyles and yearround outdoor recreation through free guided hikes. Hollister Hills, located at 7800 Cinega Road, offers ➝4

mushroom sandwich, kale Caesar salad and the popular buffalo cauliflower bites. Ingredients are sourced from local organic farms such as Spade and Plow and Mariquita Farm. Craft Roots also has a full menu of vegan cocktails and local craft beers.
Nutritional health
Mind/body
Plant-based foods have grown in popularity over the past decade as people have discovered their nutritional benefits. Natural Wonders, 215 Third St. in San Juan Bautista, is a deli and health food store rolled into one. Owner Alma Paulk said the store promotes the practice of healthy living, serving fresh, organic and vegetarian/vegan food at its deli. Its menu includes staples such as Greek salads and avocado sandwiches, as well as a “Bu-Wrap Plate,” consisting of a multi-grain tortilla, potatoes, beans, corn and salad. Natural Wonders opened in 2012. The rise of vegan establishments is evident with the recent opening of Craft Roots at 17230 Monterey Road in downtown Morgan Hill. The menu, described as a “balance between comfort and healthy,” includes a cornflake-fried king oyster
“We all have to, in our lives from time to time, find the comfort within the discomfort,” said Courtney Evans, owner/operator of Kamal Yoga Studio in Hollister. Yoga studios such as Kamal often experience a surge of interest at the beginning of the year, both from the New Year’s resolution crowd and from those who received gift certificates at Christmas to try it out. Enlarging the comfort zone by expanding into discomfort is one of yoga’s primary selling points, whether that’s body discomfort (the stretches and poses) or social/psychological discomfort (all those hang-ups about how you might look or perform in public). “Doing new things or new routines can be scary and intimidating,” Evans said. “But that’s how you make routines; you have to get through the uncomfortable part.” ➝6

VEGGIE PLATE Eating healthier is a popular New Year’s resolution. Kamal opened in 2017 offering Hollister and San Benito County a variety of yoga styles—heated yoga, slow yoga, pilates and more— with four instructors, and maximum flexibility with daily drop-in classes. Evans—who grew up in Hollister but started her yoga practice in Fresno before returning to her hometown—talks a lot about discomfort, but she also insists that yoga “conforms to everyone. If you can breathe, you can do yoga.”
Financial health Without financial stability, many other aspects of health are difficult to achieve. Financial wellness is not just about achieving a specific dollar amount in terms of savings, advised Amanda Clayman, financial therapist and Prudential’s financial wellness advocate. Instead, Clayman recommended establishing overall healthy money habits when it comes to finances in 2020. “One of the smartest things we can do for our bottom line is simply
reviewing our finances,” Clayman said. “Dedicate time each week or month (whatever you can do, just keep it consistent) to tackling your money management. These intentional ‘money dates’ with yourself and/or your family or partner could help you save money throughout the year.” During a money date, people should review where they are in terms of their budget process, debt they are trying to reduce and their savings plan. Have unexpected expenses come up recently? Clayman acknowledged that most people find dealing with money stressful, which can cause them to avoid examining these issues or discussing them with spouses or family members. “It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious about money from time to time,” she said. “When this happens, take a break and come back to the task when you can think with a clear, productive mindset.” Wallace Baine and Brandpoint Content contributed to this article.
GETTING OUT
GETTING OUT Ron Erskine has written 350 columns encouraging readers to go outside and explore the world around them.
Goodbye After 10 years, columnist hangs up pen By RON ERSKINE the benefits of time in nature, but I don’t know why we need this confirmation. We all know it’s true. When you return from a day hike, you feel energized, refreshed, cleansed. If you have ventured into the wilderness for days or weeks, you returned a different person.
Ten years and 350 columns ago, I began writing “Getting Out” with a purpose as simple as its name. The pace of life is hectic, and the Bay Area grows more and more congested. But the remedy is all around us. No major urban area in the United States has more
JANUARY 10,2020
T
ime in nature is at least restorative, at best transformative. This notion has been part of me from the start. Like my nose, my toes and my bones, it was part of the original package. Scientific research has confirmed
open space than the San Francisco Bay Area. The quantity is all the more dazzling for its variety and beauty. From a bayside marsh or by the pounding surf, we can climb through silent forests and oak woodlands to windswept peaks. Where else is such a variety of natural landscape so accessible? Countless miles of trails trace these open spaces awaiting the imprint of our boots. We have traveled far and wide together in these pages. But writing about magnificent places is senseless unless you go. And we did. Beginning with the Clouds Rest Challenge in 2013, we walked to seven alpine summits, one each summer. Not to mention all the local hikes we did each winter and spring to prepare. It was extremely gratifying that despite the time, expense and effort it took, you came in big numbers. Amazing. The love of my life and I couldn’t navigate past 35 years, and that has changed everything. In April, I will move to McCall, Idaho and start a new life. So, this will be my last column. I have loved discovering the trails and doing my best to tell you about them in a way that might entice you to go see for yourself. And to those of you who have joined me on the trail, it has been one of the greatest gifts of my life to have walked among your bright faces and your sweet souls. If this column has done nothing else, I hope it has marked you with a perpetual itch to go into nature’s heart and walk. Strap on the trail shoes, grab a day pack and find a lonely spot where the silence is deafening. Leave the earbuds behind. Feel your heart pound and your chest heave. Soak up the peace. There is no greater tonic for body and soul. As always, John Muir, the master wordsmith, said it so well: "I used to envy the father of our race, dwelling as he did in contact with the new-made fields and plants of Eden; but I do so no more, because I have discovered that I also live in ‘creation’s dawn.’ The morning stars still sing together, and the world, not yet half made, becomes more beautiful every day."

Living the wine life
Karen Seeker has jumped all-in to her career in the wine business By LAURA NESS

an Martin resident, winegrower and consultant Karen Seeker was born and raised in Benton, Ill., next door to her grandparents. “We had horses, race horses, cows, brahma bulls, even buffalo at one point,” Seeker said. “It was very country and my world centered around family.” No wonder she relishes the rural vibe of South Valley. During college in South Carolina, she pursued a career in theater, which took her to Hollywood. She and some friends established a theater on Sunset Boulevard, but it wasn’t easy. “I made extra money by playing professional billiards, mostly in Las Vegas. I had played collegiate and made it to nationals three years in a row, so it was an easy side job for me,” Seeker recalled. With encouragement from a college advisor, she pursued corporate training, earned her Master of Science in Instructional Systems Design, did an internship at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, and started her own consulting practice. After she met her husband, Randy, (PhD in Nuclear and Chemical Engineering), she
moved to San Clemente. A startup position brought them to Northern California in 2009, and they purchased their San Martin property, which was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, in 2011. The couple knew they eventually wanted to transition from corporate life to their dream of having a winery. Seeker pretty much wrapped up her consulting a few years ago to focus on the wine business. Now the entire family is involved: Randy is the winemaker and manages the vineyard. Their youngest, Taylor, manages the tasting room and inventory. Misha is a teacher at Huntington Beach High School in Southern California and helps out when she visits. Karen handles the finances, marketing and special events, which she says is the most fun part for her. To make between 550 to 750 cases per year, the boutique winery purchase grapes from local growers and from far away sources like Lake County and the Santa Lucia Highlands, adding chardonnay, syrah, merlot, sauvignon blanc and several rosés to their lineup.
