Students, parents should prepare now for distance learning By ERIK CHALHOUB

he phrase “back to school” is somewhat misleading in 2020. Yes, students will be hitting the books, listening to their teachers, writing essays and applying the Pythagorean theorem. But they won’t be physically at “school” in the traditional sense; rather, “school” will take place mere feet away from their beds. In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Hollister and San Benito High school districts will begin the fall 2020 semester in a virtual format known as distance learning. What will it look like, and how can students and parents prepare? The first day of school for the San Benito

students to minimize the number of students and staff on campus at any time, according to Superintendent Shawn Tennenbaum.

The right setting Homes across the nation have been transformed into many things these past four months, one of them being classrooms. With that, though, comes distractions unique to the home. Perhaps the dog wants to go for a walk, or maybe a few more minutes in bed wouldn’t hurt. Setting a dedicated study space is key, educators advise. According to an article by Homeschool.com, parents should talk to their children about how they prefer to study. A desk area is ideal, but it can be anywhere the student feels comfortable to study, such as the top of a bed. Most importantly, the area should be free of distractions and stocked with supplies students will need, such as pens, paper and other items that supplement learning. The rigid physical classroom structure may be gone for now, but that doesn’t mean students should become lackadaisical on their assignment

deadlines. Homeschool.com advises parents to keep their students on a schedule as an important life lesson. To keep students motivated, parents should reward them on occasion, such as allowing them to call their friend after they complete an assignment. All the technological aspects of distance learning, such as Zoom and Google Classroom, may seem unfamiliar and overwhelming to many. Joe McClary of the International Association of Continuing Education and Training advises students and their parents to familiarize themselves with the technology before the virtual bell rings so they can be prepared. “Seek out instructional videos or tutorials made available to you,” McClary wrote in an article. “Taking a little time upfront to complete the appropriate technology orientation will save you a lot of time later and ensure you understand when instructions are provided that require use of the technology. If you have to wait until the last minute, at least take time soon after the assignment is made to acquaint yourself with all that will need to be done.”

High School District is Aug. 13, while the Hollister School District is slated to start the fall semester on Aug. 17. Students will receive instructional minutes as required by the California Department of Education, which vary by grade level, in a combination of live instruction and independent learning. Students are required to log-on to class meetings every day for a specific period of time, as daily attendance will be recorded by the teacher, and will participate in a virtual classroom that includes classmates and teachers from their school sites. Online video software such as Zoom or Google Hangouts will be used for live video instruction, while Google Classroom will be used for organization of assignments, files, projects and submission of selected assignments, among other things. Students who don’t have access to a computer at home will be given Chromebooks as well as wi-fi hotspots for internet access. For the high school district, students will take two classes at a time in six-week increments, each counting as a full semester during each grading period. If in-person instruction is allowed to resume, students will continue to take two classes at a time in the hybrid model, which designates separate morning and afternoon groups of

UNEXPECTED LOSS Gary Guglielmo died on July 15 at his home in Idaho.

Mourning the loss of Gary Guglielmo Youngest of third generation By LAURA NESS the brand to a wider national audience. Gary saw the wisdom in creating the Santa Clara Wine Trail as a way to increase tourism to the region, and was a major supporter of the signage effort. He also recognized the importance of events, expanding the Villa Emile Event Center and Piazza de Maddalena to accommodate diverse needs. Gary retired in 2017, after which the fourth generation stepped in to assist in daily winery operations. They have bright plans for the future. The winery has now reopened for outdoor bottle service and wines by the glass, by reservation only, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 11am-5pm. No pets. Outside food is allowed, but please bus your tables. Reservations are for one hour: the last reservation is 4pm.

anta Clara County’s oldest continuously operated family winery since 1925, Guglielmo Family Winery, is reeling from the sudden loss of Gary John Guglielmo, the youngest of the third-generation to helm the business. Gary, who was born in San Jose on April 26, 1956, to George and Madeline (Sordello) Guglielmo, unexpectedly passed away July 15 at his home in Post Falls, Idaho. He graduated from St. Catherine Elementary in Morgan Hill, attended Bellarmine Prep High School in San Jose, and graduated from the University of Nevada Reno in 1984. A man of vision and action, Gary, along with brothers, George E. and Eugene (Gene), confidently led the winery as GM into the 21st century with bold moves in sales, marketing and distribution, introducing
