Here’s an idea for a couple-hour road trip that offers some refreshing sights, a few historical elements and a great dining spot for lunch, rounded off
with a pleasant stroll through San Juan Bautista—minus a ton of miles. My wife Sarah and I headed out from Watsonville along Highway 129 a few weeks ago with our first stop on Rogge Lane in Aromas. LOCAL SCENERY Frazier Lake abuts Highway 152 outside of Gilroy.
Exploring the county’s nooks ➝ Trip, B1
to Watsonville, we’ve been curious about the river, which runs through San Benito County, into Santa Cruz County, through Watsonville and empties into the Pacific. I managed to capture tranquil photos of the lazy river where it threaded through Aromas beneath the bridge. From there we got back on 129 out to Highway 101 north and took the next exit toward the Betabel RV Park. To our surprise the place
was huge, with dozens of RVs spread out on their tidy lot beside the Pajaro River. The lazy road that leads out of there parallels Highway 101 and deadends in a beautiful meadow punctuated with zillions of wildflowers. Heading north on 101, we took the Highway 25 exit toward Hollister and got right off the crowded highway on Bloomfield Road into the wide open countryside hemmed in with one farm after another. We then caught Highway 152 east because we wanted to see Frazier Lake,
which we’ve learned feeds the Pajaro River. Unfortunately we couldn’t find a spot to safely pull over to take in the bounty of the lake, the plant and bird life and the like. We made a U-turn on 152 and got onto Shore Road which offered rewarding views of various farms and ranches and a sprinkling of charming old barns. That’s when hunger took over our journey. Sarah found Dunneville Cafe & Market, 5970 San Felipe Road, which is a Hollister address on her Google search.
Stationed way out in the country, the place, which offered indoor and outdoor seating (in a colorful rose garden), was busy with customers. We ordered the first thing on their menu, The Original—a tri-tip sandwich with barbecue sauce on a toasted garlic roll. It was fantastic, especially when completed with a bag of potato chips and a cold root beer. We chalked it up as one of the best ➝ Trip, B7

tri-tip sandwiches we’ve had. The folks there were friendly and welcoming and a return trip is certainly in the works. Next, we followed San Felipe Road a few miles to Highway 156 where we headed south toward San Juan Bautista. As we parked in downtown SJB we noticed a wedding crowd piling out of a large SUV at the Mission. The bride, bridesmaid and young flower girls looked simply stunning, especially as they waltzed through the ancient brick and adobe archways of the mission, their fluffy dresses and dazzling hair tossed about by the cool breeze. That mission was established in 1797 and was the fifteenth of the Spanish missions in California.
We stood at the edge of the San Andreas fault and were taken in by the beauty of the farmlands hemmed in by the low mountains in addition to the wealth of historic buildings. We followed surface streets out of SJB out the backdoor of the little town, crossed over Highway 101 and got back on Highway 129 toward Watsonville, a convenient tie in to where our trip began. With the impact of Covid we’ve curtailed jet travel and the hassle of airports and traded it for road trips like this, both near and far. So instead of China, Argentina, Finland, Rome, New Orleans or Guatemala, we’ve been scouring California, tapping into its rich history, nature and other rewards that garnish its web of highways.
