Coe Park’s remote east side opens for Backcountry Weekend

ince its inception 60 years ago, Henry W. Coe State Park has grown from its original 13,000 acres to more than 89,000 acres, a hefty chunk of wildland big enough to swallow three San Franciscos. The park's immense size is its greatest asset, but it presents a challenge for visitors. The three entrances, two year-round and one seasonal, barely pierce the park's perimeter leaving the vast interior regions of the park far beyond the reach of day-use visitors. Coe Park never disappoints, especially in spring. Flowers, wildlife, the music of splashing water, and wide views are the park's stockin-trade, and it always delivers. But if you come to park headquarters, be sure you have a second bowl of Wheaties. Hikers and bikers know that the west side of the park âž? 4

APRIL 5, 2019

Each year, on the last weekend in April, the Coe Backcountry Weekend event opens the remote east side of the park to vehicles allowing visitors a rare opportunity to drive into a region that is a twoday walk from headquarters. This year's event is April 26-28 and is filling fast.

ble a 10-mile hike anywhere else. But the Backcountry Weekend takes you to a very different setting. There, the rugged slopes give way to a broad, gently rolling blue oak savanna. A just-born Orestimba Creek begins its gentle slide toward the Central Valley past Mustang Flat and Paradise Flat, names that hint at the softening of the terrain. Just across the creek is the boundary to the 22,000-acre Orestimba Wilderness, one of only a handful of designated wilderness areas near the Bay Area. Hike deep into the Sierra or the Rockies, but you are unlikely to find any place more wild and remote than this region of the Coast Range. Coe Backcountry Weekend brings many visitors, but on a normal day, this beautiful country is virtually deserted. The solitude here, just 20 crow-flying miles from San Jose, is almost unnerving.

spring. The hills were green and the creeks were running. Soft morning light dappled the forest floor through the blue oaks just beginning to leaf out. Gardens of lupine, larkspur, shooting stars, and purple owl's clover sparkled beneath. Best of all, I wasn't in Coe Park's rugged and challenging terrain. I stood in a gentle rolling landscape that seemed to reach out with open arms. This is the scene that awaits you at the Coe Backcountry Weekend. Backcountry Weekend visitors enter the park at the Bell's Station gate on Highway 152 below Pacheco Pass. Camp for one or two nights, or come for the day—the choice is yours. Most overnight visitors camp near their cars along the Kaiser-Aetna Road and spend the day hiking, biking, or horseback riding. Unsure where to go, or how to get there? Park volunteers ➝ 6

will be there to help you, and lead a number of guided hikes. Fishermen flock to Mississippi Lake or one of the smaller cattle ponds like Mustang Pond or Jackrabbit Lake. After registering at Bell's Station, backpackers can go to the lakes as well, or light out for Red Creek or the Rooster Comb in search of that special solitude. There is plenty of room to find it, even on the Backcountry Weekend. From among the myriad choices, this is how I would spend a day on foot at the Backcountry Weekend. Just beyond the Orestimba Corral, hop on the Orestimba Trail. A few hundred yards down the trail, near the far side of the first open field, look for a rock outcrop near the edge of the creek. Examine that rock and count how many acorn grinding holes you can find there. Two miles out, the trail rejoins the Orestimba Creek Road and follows the course of the creek all the way to the Rooster Comb, a sheer rock ribbon of radiolarian chert that traces the top of the ridge. From

the broad field beneath, it is a spectacular sight. It is seven miles from the Orestimba Corral to the Rooster Comb (a seven back), a long way. If that exceeds your idea of a good time, follow the same course and take a short side trip to Mustang Pond. Better yet, as you descend Orestimba Road, at the spot where the creek and the road diverge (check your map), follow the creek rather than the road. You will enjoy some trailless creekside rambling and a special treat for a hot hiker on a warm spring day: a great swimming hole. In all my backcountry travels, few places can match this remote portion of Henry Coe State Park. It possesses all the charms we seek in wild places: beauty, wildlife and a special solitude, all in a setting that embraces and welcomes a wanderer. t doesn’t get more green and lush than this Gilroy spot out on Buena Vista Avenue, directly across from colorful Satori Cellars. George and Lynda Green, who met and still work in the medical field, bought this property for its tranquil setting and views, not really thinking about vines, but then life introduced them to the possibility of vineyards as landscaping with benefits. And, the benefits! They’ve built a welcoming space for enjoyment of their excellent wines, live music and the endless green vistas that restore calm and purpose to this hectic life. Their 12 acres of vines at Verde Vineyards, predominantly Bordeaux varieties, are made into wine by consultant Jeff Ritchey (San Saba, Sycamore Creek, Pichetti).

Lynda’s favorite is the chardonnay, while George tends toward the 2015 Sophie’s Blend. Director of Sales Ron Jensen likes them all. Seriously good is the 2015 estate merlot, and if the barrel samples of the Malbec and the cabernet franc are any indication of the prowess of vintage 2018, the resulting wines are going to be killer good. If you get a chance to buy futures, don’t hesitate. But, be warned: George and I might drink that cab franc before it sees a bottle! We were also mightily impressed with the 2018 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir, with its gutsy cranberry and raspberry core. No matter what your political persuasion, this place should be your green new deal. Open every weekend, noon-5pm. Bring shades! For more information, visit www. verdevineyards.com.

THEATER

Play Within a Play

BACKSTAGE TURMOIL Pintello Comedy Theater’s production of ‘Opening Night’ concludes April 6.

APRIL 5, 2019

Pintello Theater brings Canadian comedy to Gilroy

12

By SUSAN L. RIFE

Ruth and Jack Tisdale (April Ouellette and Jeff Patereau) go out to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary by seeing a stage production of a new Canadian play, Whisper in the Wind. She’s thrilled to have wrangled VIP tickets to opening night; he’s unhappy because the anniversary falls on the night of the seventh game of the World Series, and he’s not a theater fan anyway. Truth be told, they’re both novices with this theater-going thing, and their wide-eyed naivete is charming in Pintello Comedy Theater’s production of Opening Night.

At the VIP reception before the show opens in the Charles Killian Theatre Noir Repertory Center (as pretentious a name as possible), the Tisdales recognize Michael Craig (James Swan, thoroughly maudlin and convincing), an out-of-work Shakespearean actor reduced to doing TV ads as Handy Andy for a hardware store. You can practically hear his teeth grinding with frustration as they fawn over the TV spots. Naturally they have no idea who the famous director Richard HydeFinch (Bruce Pember) is, nor his impatient girlfriend Cilla (Valerie Valenzuela), who has about reached the end of her rope with

her reluctant lover. The overwrought Hyde-Finch does his best patronizing tone with the newbies as he tries to wrestle his cast of two into shape for opening night. Meanwhile, things backstage aren’t going well. One of the two actors in the play-within-theplay shows up just seconds before the curtain goes up, and her lack of preparation is comically evident once it’s underway. The other (James Daniel Pearson as Clayton Fry) is affecting a very bad British accent when the appropriate sound would be Canadian farmer. But the Tisdales don’t know any better, and find the turmoil as entertaining as the show itself. Pintello Comedy Theater’s producers Rod and Marion Pintello have a soft spot for Canadian playwright Norm Foster, and his sprightly comedies show up regularly in the rotation. Director Whitney Pintello has a lot of fun with this bit of effervescence, and the cast’s delight in the silliness is evident as well. The best interactions between the characters come less from the obvious couples—Ouellette and Patereau as the Tisdales, Pember and Valenzuela as the director and girlfriend—than between young bartender/aspiring actor Tom Delaney (CJ Patereau) and Swan as the world-weary Craig. Jack teams up with Cilla for a bit of heartfelt sincerity. And Betsy Molchan is a hoot as the wildly overdressed young actress Libby Husniak, who arrives in a slinky beaded evening gown before she transforms herself into a Canadian farm girl. The action plays out against an effectively streamlined set of 1960s Space Age decor complete with martini bar. “Opening Night” by Norm Foster runs through April 6 at Pintello Comedy Theater, Gilroy Grange Hall. Tickets $20. For tickets and information, call 337.1599 or visit www.PintelloComedy.com.
