EDITOR’S NOTE

Summertime kicks off

Memorial Day has recently passed, and graduation ceremonies are underway. While the weather is still not quite there yet, it is beginning to feel a lot like summer. And there are plenty of events coming soon that will usher in the season. In this issue, we highlight two iconic summer events in the South Valley: Friday Night Music Series in Morgan Hill and Downtown Live in Gilroy (see page 12). The Houserockers light up the Morgan Hill Downtown Amphitheater

on June 14, while local favorites JJ Hawg kick off Gilroy’s series on June 20. Writer Susan L. Rife goes behind the curtains to find out how the lead roles in South Valley Civic Theatre’s Gypsy are preparing to capture the difficult mother-daughter relationship centered in the Tony Award-winning play (see page 6). As always, our comprehensive calendar is a great way to find that summer activity you’ve been looking for. ERIK CHALHOUB

KEEPING WATCH Ingrid Rottman

as Mama Rose and Chloe Angst as Gypsy Rose Lee star in South Valley Civic Theatre’s production of Gypsy.

Mama knows best South Valley Civic Theatre closes out 50th season with Tony Awardwinning musical BY SUSAN L. RIFE

T

In Morgan Hill, Ingrid Rottman will play Mama Rose, with Chloe Angst in the title role and Lindsay Summers as her more-talented sister June. The story begins on the vaudeville circuit in Seattle, as Rose powers ahead with the budding careers of her two daughters, June and Louise. Louise is the shy one; June is more suited to the stage. But when June elopes, Mama Rose’s attention turns to Louise, who becomes Gypsy Rose. The SVCT pairing of Rottman with Angst seemed preordained. “When I read with her, she gave me everything I needed,” Rottman said of her audition with Angst. Both women have strong vocal backgrounds—Rottman is a professional singer; Angst studied vocal performance at Sacramento State—and bear enough ➝ 10

here never was a stage mother before or since who was as horrifying as Rose Horvick, the tyrant at the heart of Gypsy, the Tony Award-winning 1959 musical that will bring South Valley Civic Theatre’s 50th anniversary season to a close. Gypsy, loosely based on the memoirs of strip-tease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, made famous such tunes as “Let Me Entertain You,” “Small World” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Mama Rose has been played by Broadway powerhouses from Ethel Merman to Bernadette Peters and Patti Lupone. Although it won no Tony Awards in its initial Broadway run, subsequent revivals have yielded trophies.

physical resemblance to make a mother-daughter relationship plausible. Angst, who commutes from Fremont to Morgan Hill for the show, said Gypsy is a show she’s wanted to be in since she was a little girl, and Louise a role she’s wanted to play for years. “When I was young, what drew me to the show was it had kids in it,” she said. “As I got older, I realized how perfect the story is. It’s a lot deeper than it was when I was a kid. And my mother was never a Mama Rose.” With her opera background, she said, the role vocally “hasn’t been too much of a challenge. It’s definitely more of an acting role than a singing role.” Angst relates well to Louise before her transformation into Gypsy Rose Lee. “I’m very much like Louise. I’m quiet and awkward,” she said. “I’m

a tomboy, mostly like Louise before she became a stripper.” But, she said before donning glittery high-heeled shoes for rehearsal, “I’m excited to be sparkly.” Mama Rose provides her own challenges to the actor portraying her. “Rose is all over the place,” Rottman said. “She’s multifaceted, manipulative. … What I really like about her is she’ll do just about anything for her kids. I’m a lot like Mama Rose—I’ll tell my kids, ‘You are good, but there will always be somebody better.’ ” Adrianne Wilkinson, who appeared in SVCT’s 2017 production of Vanya, Sonia, Sasha and Spike, and was producer for the 2018 production of Guys and Dolls, this time is wearing hats as director, costume designer and set designer. She sees directing as “a chance to help others find

something within themselves that they didn’t know they had.” Gypsy is a directing challenge, she said, because “it’s almost too big; you’ve got to tone it down a little.” Wilkinson loves shows with historical underpinnings. For Gypsy, she said, “I made our Rose read the biography of Gypsy Rose Lee’s mother,” part of a background study to make characters real on the stage. And she can relate to Mama Rose’s singleness of purpose. “I think the real thing is Rose’s love of stardom,” she said. “Mama Rose is addicted to getting her kids to be stars.” The production also stars Scott Lynch as Mama Rose’s love interest Herbie, Nick Bedford as Tulsa, Saidee Avila as Baby June and Veronica Hinch as Young Louise. Carol Harris is music and vocal director, and Valerie Valenzuela is choreographing the show. The director said Gypsy closes

SVCT’s season with a show that “is a tribute to relationships, and a tribute to theater and to passion. It’s a show all about theater. To have this as our final show is, I think, pretty great.” And, she notes, it’s nice to wrap up the season with a female-centric show. The company’s shows this year have been more male-focused—Aladdin Jr., It’s a Wonderful Life, Godspell and 1776. “It’s nice for the girls to have their turn,” she said. The 2019-2020 season will tilt toward the girls, with Cinderella, Steel Magnolias, Heathers, Cabaret and Beauty and the Beast. South Valley Civic Theatre performs “Gypsy” June 14-July 6 at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road. Admission is $16-$25. For tickets and information, visit www.svct.org or call 408.842.7469.

The truth about garden myths

INEFFECTIVE WEED CONTROL While vinegar may kill weeds above ground, it doesn’t affect the roots.

Many chemicals do more harm than good By KATE RUSSELL

baking soda back to the colony to explode? It doesn't really happen. As for slugs and snails, well, baking soda is a salt. Salt does terrible things to slugs and snails. But salting your fields never ends well for plants. As for baking soda's fungicidal properties, it works well in the lab and not in the field. If you have fungal problems, try using potassium bicarbonate, instead. What about killing weeds with vinegar? It sounds so easy! Does it really work? Well, it depends. Grocery store vinegar is five percent acetic acid and 95 percent water. Horticultural strength weed-killing vinegar is eight percent acetic acid or higher. Vinegar is food, while acetic acid is a potentially

JUNE 7, 2019

an gardeners simply turn to their kitchen cabinet for inexpensive, natural remedies for the most common garden problems? Garden quick fixes are a dime a dozen and often do more harm than good. This is especially true for Epsom salts, vinegar, dish soap and baking soda. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is said to control powdery mildew, kill ants, slugs and weeds, and make tomatoes taste sweeter. But it doesn't do any of those things. Baking soda is highly alkaline. Adding it to already alkaline Gilroy soil will not improve the taste of anything. And those claims about ants taking

dangerous chemical. Vinegar may kill the aboveground portion of weeds, but not the roots. Of course, if you do it enough, the plant will eventually use up all the food stored in the root system, killing it. Probably. But, it would have been simpler to just cut it off or pull it out in the first place. What about dish soap—the miracle bug killer? Soaps remove an insect's protective waxy coating, making them dry up and die. Unfortunately, soaps do the same thing to plants. While specially formulated insecticidal soaps are very useful in the garden, you need to understand that many dish soaps are harsh detergents that contain bleach, fragrances, colors and other chemicals that can harm or kill your plants. The sheer volume of claims made about Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) should indicate a problem. Magnesium sulfate is said to improve blooming, germination, photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, fruit production and flavor while deterring pests and killing weeds, reducing blossom end rot, transplant shock, leaf curling and chlorosis, without risk of building up in the soil. All these claims are inaccurate. Sadly, there is no scientific evidence of Epsom salts repelling slugs, insects, grubs, voles, rabbits or anything else. As for blossom end rot, adding Epsom salts may actually interfere with your plants’ ability to take up calcium, making the condition more likely, rather than preventing it. These garden cure-alls should be filed under “too good to be true.” A healthy, productive garden does not come with quick fixes. Before jumping on any bandwagon, be sure you take the time to read the science behind those claims.

Hollister Concerts brings touring bands to local community

By JENNY ARBIZU

I

n the southeastern foothills of Hollister lies a 600-acre ranch, favored with views of sprawling hills and a vast sky. It’s land that Al Guerra’s extended family has owned for nearly 40 years. And it’s here, more than 10 years ago, where Al found himself admiring the terrain with his eldest child, Jason. “It just kind of occurred to us, ‘Hey, we could sit here, listen to music, and enjoy the scenery; drink a beer or a glass of wine,’ ” Al recalled. And with that, a vision was born. Since that epiphanic day, Pepper Tree Ranch (originally a working

cattle ranch) has since become home to Guerra Cellars and Hollister Concerts—a family-favorite hotspot to take in good tunes and enjoy warm, summer evenings. Such bands as 38 Special, Los Lobos, Y&T, and Bonfire, an AC/ DC tribute band have been hits at Hollister Concerts so far, and “have always had the best crowds,” said Danielle Burke, Guerra Cellars wine club manager and concert coordinator. “Their music always gets the crowd going, and in such an intimate setting, it couldn’t get any better.” This summer’s line-up is proving to offer the same exciting entertainment for locals and visiting crowds.

The Long Run (Eagles Tribute) and Neon Circus (Brooks and Dunn Tribute) will kick off the 2019 summer series on Saturday, June 22. Continuing the line-up is The Petty Breakers (Tom Petty Tribute) and Mirage (Fleetwood Mac Tribute) on July 13; Queen Nation (Queen Tribute) and Idol X (Billy Idol Tribute) on Aug. 3; DSB (Journey Tribute) and Turn the Page (Bob Seger Tribute) on Aug. 24; and Bonfire (AC/DC Tribute) and Fast Times (80s Tribute) on Sept. 14. What began as a hobby for Al, who also owns a movie theater, has now become profitable enough to possibly become a business opportunity for a younger family member one day. “My kids all have careers, so it’s not like they’re going to make it a business,” Al said. “But maybe my grandkids would take it to the next level.” And what he envisions as the next level is to ultimately headline national artists. “Hollister supports us very well, but there’s only so many people in Hollister to draw from,” he said. “So we really try to concentrate on Gilroy, Morgan Hill, Watsonville and Salinas to get some people here. It’s nice to not have to go to San Jose and then drive back in order to see somebody you’d like to see. I’d like to see us be able to do that.” Hollister Concerts at Pepper Tree Ranch is located at 500 John Smith Road in Hollister. For information, visit www.hollisterconcerts.com or email info@guerracellars.com. All ages welcome to concerts; children 12 and under are free. No pets are permitted, other than service animals. Guerra Cellars’ Tasting Barn at Pepper Tree Ranch is open Saturday-Sunday, noon to 5pm from May through September.
