EDITOR’S NOTE

Waldo is in town Most people have asked the question, “Where’s Waldo?”, but many likely haven’t asked, “Who’s Waldo?” South Valley writer Wallace Baine did, and in this week’s cover story (page 6), he uncovered many details about the internationally-known red-and-white-striped adventurer that aren’t well-known. Waldo is in Morgan Hill this month for the annual Find Waldo Local event, where the community is invited to visit 25 local businesses to search for small

figurines of the character and win prizes. The effort is being spearheaded by BookSmart, one of 250 independent bookstores chosen by the Where’s Waldo? publisher to host the event. In an era when brick-and-mortar stores must reinvent themselves as “experience” destinations to battle online retail giants, efforts such as Find Waldo Local are a great step forward. ERIK CHALHOUB

WALDO IS HERE International phenomenon hiding in more than 20 Morgan Hill businesses BY WALLACE BAINE

F

or the month of July, there’s at least one correct answer to the question that generations of parents and children have been asking each other over and over again. So before you ask, let’s stipulate that Waldo is, in fact, in Morgan Hill. To be any more specific than that—well, that’s where the fun comes in. Throughout July, the Morgan Hill bookstore BookSmart continues the tradition of hosting a month-long event known as Find Waldo Local, during which kids (and former kids) can crawl over town looking for small figurines of everybody’s favorite candy-striped adventurer to earn prizes. Twenty-five Morgan Hill businesses have agreed to welcome

Waldo (or at least a six-inches-tall representation of him) into their shops, and then hide him anywhere within the public space of the business. Carrying their FWL “passports,” would-be Waldo hunters can then collect stamps from each business—provided they can actually find him. “We’ve done it for several years now,” said BookSmart’s Brad Jones. “Every year, the publisher (of Where’s Waldo?) picks 250 independent bookstores. And since they’ve been doing it, we’ve only been not selected one time. They just told us, ‘Hey, we have to give it to somebody else this time.’ But we do a lot of promotion around it. It’s great for the community, and we have a blast.” At BookSmart—now in its new location at Vineyard Town Center about halfway between Nob Hill Foods and TJ Maxx—Waldo will share the spotlight with his villainous nemesis (and ➝ 10 JULY 12, 2019

yellow-and-black doppelganger) Odlaw. And Waldo hunters will have to find them both. In every other participating business, however, Waldo is flying solo. Waldo hunters who collect 20 stamps on their passport will then be eligible for a drawing with prizes donated by the participating businesses to be held July 31 at BookSmart. Local businesses include California Sports Center, Bike Therapy, Thinker Toys, GVA Café, Anime 101 & Manga Too, Craft Roots Veggie Grill, An-Jan Feed & Pet Supply and many more. “Find Waldo Local is a big boon for local businesses,” Jones said. “Lots of times, people don’t really know what’s in their community and when they go to their local businesses, it’s like, ‘I never knew we had such a wonderful this or that.’ A couple of years ago, we had an art gallery downtown (participating in the promotion)

and she said, during the month of July, the only visitors she got were Waldo visitors.” Where’s Waldo?, created by artist Martin Hanford, has proven to be a durable publishing phenomenon, a picture-book empire that has delighted kids for more than 30 years. It was first published in 1987 in the U.K., where it was (and still is) known as Where’s Wally? In the children’s book industry, it provided a bridge between Dr. Seuss and the Harry Potter series, which first appeared a decade after Waldo. This year’s Waldo promotion marks a turning point in the up-and-down fortunes of BookSmart. Last year, Jones— who owns the shop with his wife Cinda Meister—was not only dealing with major surgery, but the store was in danger of closing its doors at its former location on East Dunne Avenue.

The move to the Vineyard Town Center earlier this year has given the story a new lease on life, said Jones. “The new location has a lot more foot traffic,” he said. “We have an amazing landlord who has been working with us to make it happen. I think we’re going to be here for a long time. We dug a really deep hole at our other location. We had trouble getting people over there and it was very expensive. But though we dug a deep hole, now we can see that we have the ability to throw some dirt back in that hole. Maybe some day, we’ll be able to see out of it.” In the meantime, Waldo is reminding kids and parents in Morgan Hill that the bookseller is still around and in a new location, ready to lead a promotion that covers the entire city. It all starts with the passport at BookSmart. “The kids come in looking for

A few things you may not know about the international book-publishing phenomenon known as Where’s Waldo?: Waldo was originally conceived in the U.K. where he is known as Wally. Only in the U.S. and Canada does he go by the name Waldo. In most other countries, he is Wally. But in Norway and South Africa, he is Willy. In Germany, he is known as Walter and, for some reason, in France, he is Charlie. Where’s Wally? was first adapted into an animated television series in 1991, and lasted only one season. But the franchise returns to TV this month with the new Where’s Waldo? series debuting on Universal Kids on July 20. The new animated series features Waldo as a 12-year-old boy with a female best friend named Wenda. Among the voices featured in the show is Weird Al Yankovic and Tom Kenny, known as the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants. The current record for most people dressed as Wally/Waldo in one gathering is 3,872, which took place in Dublin, Ireland in 2011. At least eight video games have been developed licensing Waldo. The size of Waldo in the book series has gradually been decreasing, making it more challenging to find him in the crowd. In the first book, Waldo was about one square centimeter in size, but by the fourth book, he had been reduced to about .20 square centimeters. The other characters surrounding him correspondingly increased to roughly four-fold. At least one artist painted a giant image of Waldo on an undisclosed rooftop in Vancouver, B.C. to give eagle-eyed Waldo buffs a chance to find him on Google Earth. The famously red-and-whitestriped character has sold more than 55 million books worldwide and has been translated in more than 30 languages.

I

t is a well-known phrase among foodies and wine lovers—food pairings. Meant to enhance the taste buds, food paired with wine is a common finding at wineries and food festivals. But food paired with art and music? Such an idea of designing food to complement music is being brought to locals by Credo Studio in San Juan Bautista owner Ramona Hill, and Santa Cruzbased producer Dave Svec with the Women of Song Gourmet Series, beginning at the Credo Studio on Saturday, July 13. “It is quite the unique experience to have food and wine designed to

complement a singer-songwriter's original material,” Svec said. And it’s one that was derived after Svec met Hill at a fundraiser her studio was hosting four months ago. “There was an African musician there, the president of the nonprofit was doing African barbecue, and we had a table where we were selling African jewelry,” Hill said. “So it was, just coincidentally, an event where we were pairing music with the art and the food.” It was an idea Svec had once envisioned and designed for a food festival, but never brought to fruition. “So when he came through and

saw me doing that, his entire vision was sparked again,” Hill said. “So that was the birth of this series.” The series features female singer-songwriters—each performance including original recorded material from each woman, and all enhanced by the pairing of wine and hors d’oeuvres. Alisa Fineman will kick off the series on July 13. Voted “Best Folk Musician” four years running by Monterey Bay’s then-Coast Weekly, Fineman will be joined by co-artist, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Kimball Hurd, featuring songs spanning over the course of her three-decade career. Visual artist and singer-songwriter, Anne Whitehurst, will entice audiences on Saturday, Aug. 3 with her approach of fusing visual art with music. An array of multimedia and musical pieces will be presented, and examples of Whitehurst’s artwork will be displayed and possibly recreated. Selections from her new EP Castle of Hearts, produced by Joe Craven, will be featured. The band, Low Noon— featuring Whitehurst as a rhythm guitarist—will also perform a variety of covers. Singer-songwriter, Socorra, will close out the series with her bluesdriven indie rock sound on Saturday, Sept. 14. The San Josebased artist has opened for acts such as Blues Traveler and Fantastic Negrito, and Content Magazine has deemed her a “...gutsy blues voice...familiar but unique, and undeniable in its smoky richness.’ “ The Women of Song Gourmet Series will be held at Credo Studio, 1 Polk St. in San Juan Bautista. Concerts begin at 4pm; tickets are $35 per event. Hors d’oeuvres (provided by San Juan Bautista cafe, Lolla) and wine are included in the ticket price. For information or for tickets, call Ramona Hill at 831.245.8470 or visit www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4272270.

But the immediate issue— Mom disrobing in the community room—is just the starting point for this mostly-comic show in which all of the dialogue is performed by actors on the phone with each other. Over the course of the show, each sister’s personality unfolds, each sibling’s relationship is revealed, and what you thought was happening early on turns into something unexpected. Director and theater co-founder

Kevin Heath has drawn together six talented actors to play the Walker sisters—Rosalind Farotte as Peggy, Donna M. Knippen as Audrey, Christine McElroy as Roseanne, Christy Wait as Sherry, Christine Wanish as Paige and Betsy Andrade as Aneece. Each actor manages to carve out, in her eight-foot-square chunk of the stage, a distinct persona in locales as diverse as New York, Santa Fe, Georgia, Iowa and Mississippi. The family is centered on eldest sister Peggy, who has been the “in charge of Mom” sister for 30 years in Memphis, Tenn., and who keeps up with her sisters’ changes in address and marital status across the miles. She’s also lost all her money to a con artist. Her sister Sherry is the flighty one, prone to tropical-print caftans and too

much affection toward her sister’s husband. Roseanne has been married three times to pastors, which she calls “dancing-bear narcissists.” Audrey’s been drowning her grief in the bottle for decades over the deaths of her son and her husband; even her hospital gig as Bimbles the Clown gives her no relief. Paige’s marriage is on the rocks as well, in an unexpected way. And Aneece, out of contact with her family for four years, is a lesbian in a relationship crisis of her own. The show’s gimmick—that none of the women is in the same room with any of her sisters—makes the show very dialogue-heavy, which also means that nearly all the character development comes from what the sisters say to one another. You’ll get clues based on their

costumes and the small spaces representing their homes, but most of it comes through their phone calls. And sometimes the conversations they have with others outside the family can be as revealing as those within the group. Aneece, played with subtle resolve by Andrade, shows her pain more when she talks with her soon-to-be-ex than with her sisters. Peggy’s revelations of her own dysfunctional relationship within the nuclear family tread on familiar ground. “Belles: The Reunion” runs through July 14 at Limelight Actors Theater at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St., Gilroy. Tickets are $25. For information, call 408.472.3292 or visit www.LimelightActorsTheater.com.

center. Improvements began in fall 2017. I pulled into the small age-old main entrance and asked the young park aide where the new entrance was. He told me I had passed it a few hundred yards down the road. Indeed, I remembered a fenced construction area, but I did not see any major structures there. He explained that the new entrance would open late this summer. More context would have to wait until I returned home. New entrance or no new entrance, I was in a great state park full of natural variety and great spectator value. Steps down

JULY 12, 2019

The main park entrance to Castle Rock State Park is on Skyline Boulevard two-and-a-half miles south of its junction with Highway 9. From there, the park's 5,200 acres and 34 miles of trails tumble down the west slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains to the San Lorenzo Valley. I returned to this park in part to see the new visitor center that I understood was under construction and must surely be completed by now. In 2010, the Sempervirens Fund purchased a 33-acre Christmas tree farm adjacent to the park, space for additional parking and a proposed 6,000-square-foot visitor

the Saratoga Gap Trail, I entered a cool forest dominated by towering Douglas firs. Broadleaf trees I expect to see grow to a modest height then branch out looked more like tall Saturn Rockets on the launch pad as they reached high for available sunlight among the conifers. Soon, what had been Kings Creek's dry bed began to sing with water. Farther down the trail, the creek's timid flow did not show off the sheer 75-foot drop at Castle Rock Falls as it would after a winter storm. Nevertheless, I had a firm grip on the railing when I gazed straight down from the precariously poised overlook platform. Steps beyond Castle Rock Falls, the trail emerged from the trees and began to traverse an open slope dominated by chaparral species. Views galore! The landscape fell steeply, then tumbled ridge over forested ridge to Monterey Bay. The distant Santa Lucia Mountains that divide the Salinas Valley from Big Sur stood hazy on the horizon. Castle Rock's iconic sandstone outcrops punctuated the hillside. Erosion over the eons has sculpted intriguing pits and pockets in the rocks, some cavities big enough to crawl in. Impressive and imposing, gigantic Goat Rock, a popular rock climbing site, loomed above the Saratoga Gap Trail. After completing my threemile loop, I headed home curious about the new entrance. Apparently, while it will add desperately needed parking, restrooms and an amphitheatre, the visitor center has been scrubbed. Funding for the building was not in place when ground was broken and may never have been raised. It may also be that California State Parks lacked funding to properly staff the facility. Never mind. The trails, creeks, the views and nature's peace are what the park is about. And they are all still there.
