With his bass strap slung over his shoulder, Polo Jones has hit the road, air and sea on his way to perform for millions of raving fans across the world. But when he’s not performing in such places as Moscow and Havana, Jones returns to his Morgan Hill home, where he works as a recording producer at Skyline Entertainment & Publishing. Writer Wallace Baine sat down

with Jones as he reminisced about his 35-year career playing alongside rock icons such as Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Eric Clapton in this week’s cover story (page 4). Jones, who cites Paul McCartney as his favorite bassist, plans on touring again with Italian blues rocker Zucchero Fornaciari in 2020. ERIK CHALHOUB

WHAT EVERY PG&E CUSTOMER NEEDS TO KNOW Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS, is a safety program that proactively shuts off electric power lines when there is an elevated fire risk. Do you have an emergency kit with nonperishable food, one gallon of water per person per day, medications, flashlights and batteries?

If you own a generator, is it safe to operate?

If anyone in your family depends on electricity for their medical needs, have you made preparations?

All PG&E customers should be prepared for possible power outages that could last for multiple days. If power is temporarily turned off, customers should consider these questions:

Are your mobile phones fully charged? Do you have a portable back-up charger or a solar charger?

Can we reach you in the event of a Public Safety Power Shutoff? Update your contact info at pge.com/mywildfirealerts.

Do you know how to open your garage door manually?

Do you have a personal safety plan for all members of your family, including your pets?

A groovy ride Morgan Hill’s Polo Jones reflects on a life in music

WORLD TRAVELER

OCTOBER 4, 2019

Polo Jones of Morgan Hill has performed all around the world with some of the most well-known names in rock.

uick: Who was the first Western rock star to play the Kremlin in Moscow after the fall of the Berlin Wall? McCartney? U2? Springsteen? Prince? None of the above. It was, in fact, Zucchero Fornaciari, the Italian blues rocker popularly known by his first name, a childhood nickname from the Italian word for sugar. Most American rock fans have probably never heard of Zucchero, but on the international stage, he’s a superstar on par with the glittery names mentioned above. And right there beside him—over three decades of touring around the world, selling more than 60 million records, and winning countless awards—has been Morgan Hill’s Polo Jones. For 35 years, Jones has been Zucchero’s primary bass player. He’s taken the wild ride alongside Zucchero to Moscow and countless other venues around the world. He was there with Zucchero in 2012 for the similarly historic Gran Conceirto show, the biggest concert ever by an international artist in Havana, Cuba. “We had 80,000 people there,” said Jones, reminiscing about Cuba at his Morgan Hill home. “We filmed it for PBS, so we brought with us 36 cameras and full PA system. We brought

the whole stage, this giant two-tiered thing. And the stage set was the front of an old Buick. After that, we took the whole show on the road for a world tour, which was very cool. We didn’t take the Buick, though.” Zucchero has been Jones’s primary gig, but in his long career, he’s played alongside many of the greatest in contemporary rock from his days playing with John Lee Hooker, to working with Sting, Brian May, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Andrea Bocelli and Eric Clapton. “I first played with Eric back in ’89 with Zucchero,” he remembered. “I didn’t know it was Eric Clapton for about 20 minutes. That was when he had that pageboy haircut. And I just thought, wait, who’s that playing guitar? That can’t be Eric Clapton.” This fall, Jones is at home working as a recording producer at Morgan Hill’s Skyline Entertainment & Publishing, and pursuing projects in concert promotion. Then, next spring, it’s off again for another world tour with Zucchero beginning at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Judging by YouTube clips of Jones leading the crowd at the stately Arena di Verona in Italy—built in the First Century A.D.—he does a lot more than play the bass. He also holds a role as Zucchero’s resident revivalist, in this

case, bringing the crowd to frenzy as an introduction to the song “The Devil in Me.” Paul Jones Jr. grew up in Oakland in the 1960s, a musical hotbed in an era of artistic adventurousness. His parents were both jazz artists, his dad a sax player and his mom a pianist and singer. In Oakland, he was something of a fish out of water, a lover of San Francisco-style rock in an area where funk, soul and blues ruled. “When I lived in West Oakland as a kid,” he remembered, “people were listening to Bobby Blue Bland, Marvin Gaye, James Brown. I was into the Beatles. That was hard. They didn’t get it. I mean, I liked the Dave Clark Five. It doesn’t get any more square than the Dave Clark Five. There’s no funk in that at all.” His early inspiration for bass was Cream’s Jack Bruce. But he was drawn into the rich funk scene

in the East Bay, thanks in no small part to his childhood friend David Vega, who became a well-regarded guitarist under his stage name Dave Dynamite. The two eventually met up with legendary R&B band leader Larry Graham, formerly of Sly & the Family Stone. Through Graham, Jones ended up playing in Graham Central Station, which went on to have several funk hits in the ’70s. It was under the direction of Graham that Jones morphed from the Cream-style rock bassist to the slap style more often heard in funk and R&B. (He got the nickname “Polo” not from a love of horses or Ralph Lauren casual wear. He said the name is derived from “il polipo,” Italian for octopus, so-called for his habit of playing several instruments at once on stage.) Jones first began to play with Zucchero in 1985. “I was just bouncing ➝6

around at the time,” he said, “playing in a fusion pop band called Go West, my hair was all Princed up.” A producer named Corrado Rustici recruited him to join a Bay Area band called Holiday of Hands to replace Randy Jackson (later known for “American Idol” fame), and it was through Rustici that he met Zucchero. It was Zucchero who pointed Jones to superstar bassist Lee Sklar as an inspiration. “I was a performer,” Jones said. “I came from a rock band where I’m all whipping the bass around and it’s all, hey, look at me. But he was saying, ‘I want someone like Lee Sklar,’ and Sklar was all about locking with the drummer. So, the next night, I stayed in the pocket and just locked with the drums, and now most of the gigs I get is because of the groove factor.”

Yet, his favorite bass player remains the world’s most famous player. “It’s gotta be Paul McCartney,” he said. “His bass lines were so musical. You don’t think of him as being some hot-shot bass player, but there’s a lot of hot-shot bass players that can’t do what Paul McCartney did. He’s the best.” In 2020, it’s more of the same for Polo Jones, touring with Zucchero with an enormous band featuring fiddles, horns and extra percussion. A typical set list, he said, is more than 40 songs, and close to three hours of live music. On stage, Zucchero is known for his larger-than-life persona. By contrast, Jones likes to zero in on a handful of people in the audience. “I play for maybe three people,” he said. “I’ll look into the crowd and find whoever is grooving to me, and that’s when I know, I got ’em.”

Celebratory music South Valley Symphony opens season with nod to Gavilan

OCTOBER 4, 2019

W

hen South Valley Symphony opens its 46th season Saturday night at Gavilan College, the concert will end with a piece celebrating the college’s 100th anniversary, composed by one of Gavilan’s own and arranged by another. “Gavilan Spirit” was commissioned by the symphony and the college from Dahveed Behroozi, a Gavilan faculty member and Bay Area musical luminary. The work has been arranged for orchestra by Gavilan alumnus (and past symphony assistant conductor) Christopher Niemann. “I would say that the fact that the school has been in existence for a hundred years is a huge accomplishment,” Behroozi said. “What I’m trying to mirror in the piece is this climax, trying to represent 100 years.” Behroozi is originally from San Jose but went to New York for his musical education, earning his bachelor’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music and his master’s at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. A job offer at San Jose State University brought him back to the Bay Area several years ago, followed by his position at Gavilan. “Gavilan Spirit” is written for full orchestra and solo piano, which Behroozi will play. “It’s essentially a dedication to Gavilan College and a celebratory piece to its 100 years of existence,” said Behroozi, 38. “What I was aiming for was a piece with a buildup, a slow burn, start small and really end with something big as a celebration” of the centennial. “There is quite a bit of improvisation in the piano part,” he said. “It’s just going to be strings in the beginning, then orchestration, a big improvisational piano section

GAVILAN LUMINARY Dahveed Behroozi will perform a piano solo during ‘Spirit of Music 1: Light’ on Oct. 5. over the orchestra, which will kind of build and build and build with more notes and more dynamics. Then eventually we’ll explode.” Symphony music director and conductor Anthony Quartuccio said the symphony had gone into conversations with Behroozi without any preconceived notions about what form the composer might create. “When we whittled away at the creative process, it became really clear that Dahveed should play something,” said Quartuccio, who has led the symphony since 2006. “We needed to collaborate not just

from the compositional level but from the performance level. It’s really kind of scary at first, when you’re determined to come up with something that’s really interesting.” Behroozi’s musical interests encompass classical, jazz and new music. He plays frequently on the Bay Area jazz circuit and in 2012 released his first record, “Games,” with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Tim Bulkley. He started playing classical violin and piano at the age of 5, and from the beginning loved to improvise, which he describes as “highspeed composing.”

Saturday’s concert will mark two firsts for Behroozi: the first time he’s played with an orchestra, and the first time he solos over the top of the orchestra. “I’m really excited,” he said. South Valley Symphony opens its 46th season at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 with “Spirit of Music 1: Light” at the Gavilan College Theater in Gilroy. ello, October. September recently showed us that we can go from century-topping heat to pouring rain in a matter of a few days. What do you have in store for us? Whatever you dish out, we’ll be out there cycling! (Note: Be sure to take the family out for a ride to check out the Halloween decorations.) Longtime readers know how much I adore the Coyote Creek Cycling Classic, which returns Oct. 12. The CCCC is the perfect event to get your pedaling progeny pumped about bicycling events: • Very doable rides! CCCC offers 10-, 25- and 50-mile options.

• Very safe routes! The 10- and 25-mile options travel the beautiful (and mostly flat) Coyote Creek Trail. • Very rewarding! Face it, who doesn’t love a post-ride meal and shwag like shirts and patches? Think of the pride felt when walking into work or the classroom, rocking that CCCC T-shirt! One week later, on Oct. 19, another area favorite returns: the Discovery Classic, this year staging out of Paicines. This year’s two choices are a challenging 100K Gravel Grinder ride and a lovely 40-mile Vineyard Tour, which promises cyclists “some of

California's most scenic landscapes on a fully supported event.” Riders will also feel rewarded that a portion of the Discovery Classic proceeds go to benefit San Benito County youths.

Mace also sources chardonnay, malbec and cabernet from the Paicines area, another very toasty spot along Highway 25, literally out in the middle of even more nowhere than Day Road. In the scheme of things, Paicines is truly the original Old West, where you expect to see cowboys driving cattle in an endless stream of dust. Inside the tasting room, the 2018 grenache was a perfect thirstquencher, with its strawberry pink lemonade punch flavors, straight from the Pierce Ranch of San Antonio Valley. Winemaker Jeff Mace carefully selects his vineyards for flavors, and the chardonnay from KW Ranch in the northern part of the Santa Lucia Highlands effortlessly echoes the lemon grove that borders the vineyard on the west side. This is classic chard, supple and lithe. You can taste the effects of

he valley, hills, sunsets and city lights can all be seen from this custom estate. Located at 16645 Oak View Circle in Morgan Hill, the 5,100-square-foot home includes five bedrooms and 5.5 baths. Built in 1975, the home was last sold in 1992, according to Zillow.com, and the reason the previous owners lived here for nearly 30 years is apparent. Oaks community. Beveled glass doors lead into a formal entry with bamboo flooring. The gourmet kitchen features granite counters, Bosch dishwasher, Thermador gas cooktop, SS appliances and hardwood floors. The master suite includes a private balcony and a spa-like master bath. I started a career in Real Estate so I could help people make their dreams of owning a home come true. Owning your own home is one of everyone’s biggest dreams! And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downͲ sizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true. The most important thing I do for my clients is making myself available at all times – 7 days a week – morning, afternoon and evening.
