The Besson family take pride in their historic Gilroy vineyard, and that love of the land has carried into its fourth generation, no easy feat.

Writer Laura Ness sat down with Denise Besson and her husband James Fahey, all with full wine glasses in their hands, to learn the history of the vineyards and check in on Besson’s new wine label. Besson

embarked on the label in 2017, after decades of selling grapes to local wineries.

The property includes grenache planted in 1910 (among the oldest in Santa Clara County), old vine zin planted in 1922 and Mission vines planted in the late 1800s.

idle up to either side of the bar window at Besson Family’s mini-barn tasting room, and a great view awaits. For those who are inside looking out, the window frames the 20-acre old vine vineyard as it meanders down to Uvas Creek, back-dropped by the dun-colored rolling foothills in the distance.

Those on the outside looking in will see a pool table, a cozy seating area with a woodstove and reclaimed

barnwood paneling. Picking bins, stenciled with names of local farming legends, have been integrated into the walls. To the back stands another bar, above which are displayed bottles from the many wineries that have purchased Besson fruit over the years. Among them are Birichino, Sarah’s Vineyard, Bonny Doon, Calera, I. Brand and Orin Swift.

to honor the family’s farming way of life, and to establish a new tradition for the next generation to steward, along with this land.

After decades of selling grapes to others, the sole member of the fourth generation of the family, Denise Besson, decided to make wine with her family’s name on it.

“We wanted to share this special place, and these beautiful old vines, with others,” she said, gesturing towards the old vine grenache, decked in their full autumnal regalia, their trunks gnarled by more than a century of growth.

These vines have seen so much change in the world since they were planted: two world wars, the Great Depression, Prohibition, wine in cans, the birth of the internet and a worldwide obsession with cell phones. Yet the vines live on, unfazed, determined to produce their finest fruit, year after year.

The crop may be meager, but the flavors speak to the grace and confidence of age.

Under the Besson Family label, which will be about 500 cases annually, there are a rosé of syrah, chardonnay, syrah and cabernet sauvignon, almost all of it estate, and all made by Pedro Vargas, a

UC Davis graduate whose winery, Vino Vargas, is in San Miguel.

Future releases will include a Century Vines grenache, Ancient Vines zinfandel, pinot noir and port.

Besson, who is the fourth generation to live on this 50-acre parcel, is pleased to be carrying on her family’s legacy in the Santa Clara Valley. Her great-grandfather, Jean Auguste Besson, a French immigrant who came to Gilroy in 1925, purchased farmland with vines that exist to this day, including grenache planted in 1910, old vine zin planted in 1922 and Mission vines planted in the late 1800s. The 15-acres of grenache are among the oldest in Santa Clara County, and both the grapes and the resulting wine are highly sought after.

Her father, George Besson Jr., has been farming grapes for most of his life, and considers it an honor to work the land. They now have eight varieties between the two parcels.

Although she pursued a career in teaching communications studies and public speaking, having taught at Gavilan College for 22 years, Besson said she felt compelled to be part of the only business her family has ever known. ➝8

HISTORIC VINEYARDS Besson’s 15 acres of grenache, planted in 1910, are among the oldest in Santa Clara County.

“I was going through a divorce,” she said. Pointing to a hillside above an old walnut orchard on the adjacent parcel, she continued, “I lived on the other side. I literally moved over the hill and came back home. My grandparents had always wanted me to live here on the property.”

Besson and her husband, James Fahey, a Gilroy native with a background in solar, beam as they share the story of how they met. They were set up by a music professor at the college who thought they would be a good match.

Recalls Besson of their first date, “James said, ‘how about let’s just go to lunch?’ He took me to Nepenthe!” Says Fahey, “I remember the wine we had: Seasmoke Pinot.”

The wheels started turning.

That was five years ago. They were married in July 2019.

“At the time, no one was living in this house,” Besson said. “One night during a harvest moon, we sat outside, right in this place where we are sitting now, and James said, ‘I’m going to build a huge deck here

someday.’ We talked to my Dad about the idea of bottling our own wine and he loved it.”

She credits mentors such as Tim Slater of Sarah’s Vineyard, Jeff Fadness of La Vie Dansante and John and Carolyn Aver.

“We’ve learned so much from our neighbors and fellow winegrowers,” she said. “They’ve been enormously helpful to us and we are so very grateful.”

The radiant glow as she talks about the wines, her respect for her father and their plans for the future, tells a story all its own.

But she has little trouble articulating her message. After all, she’s an expert at public speaking.

“We wanted to do this for the love of the vines, to establish a legacy,” Besson said. “I feel such an enormous sense of gratification.

This is very special for us.”

For now, Besson Family Vineyards is open only by appointment, and for special wine club events, which are held five or six times a year.

imelight Actors Theater, which was in danger of shutting down following the retirement of its co-owners, will be under new management.

South Valley Civic Theatre will assume management of Limelight following the end of its current show, The Hallelujah Girls, on Dec. 1.

Scott Lynch, SVCT board president and a familiar presence on both Limelight's and SVCT's stages, said he looks forward to SVCT's growth and expansion to Gilroy.

"As we begin our second half-century of providing live theater in the South Valley, we are excited about this opportunity to offer SVCT performances at this second venue while

preserving the unique characteristics of Limelight Actors Theater," he said.

For the past nine years, Limelight Actors Theater has staged shows at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St. Limelight was the brainchild of actor Kevin Heath, who created the theater company in part to entice people to the center.

After nine years as a member of the Gilroy Arts Alliance and Limelight’s executive director—and after 43 Limelight productions—Heath and his husband and theater company co-owner Alan Obata are moving away.

"Although it was a difficult decision to close Limelight; we couldn’t be happier with SVCT’s decision to continue the brand of theater we

created,” Heath said. “The community will be very pleased with what they will experience with the next generation of Limelight.”

SVCT just completed its 50th season. While SVCT is the resident theater company of the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, its roots are in Gilroy. In 1969, Gilroy Community Theatre was established by a group of residents and volunteers. It was not until 1985 that it changed its name to South Valley Civic Theatre and expanded performance locations beyond Gilroy to include Hollister and Morgan Hill.

SVCT settled in Morgan Hill in 2003, after completion of the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse.

With its small black box stage, Limelight usually produces three shows a year, a mix of comedies and dramas. Meanwhile in the Playhouse, SVCT’s annual season features five productions, typically a mix of family and adult musicals, teen and children’s musicals, and a comedy or drama.

With the acquisition of a second venue in Gilroy, SVCT anticipates continuing with a combined mix of eight plays and musicals. SVCT plans to retain the features of Limelight, such as the small cabaret theater experience and the option for attendees to bring their own dinner.

“Limelight has been my home away from home for nine years,” said actress Rosalind Farotte. “It has been a haven for fine theater, great camaraderie. and enduring friendships. I was greatly saddened by the loss of our leaders, Alan and Kevin, and the apparent demise of Limelight Actors Theater. However, I am delighted that South Valley Civic Theater has decided to step in and hold this theater and its family together. Under the direction of SVCT, Limelight will continue to be a unique and treasured part of our artistic community.”

he first in a series of concerts to benefit the inaugural Coyote Creek Music Festival will feature the Ghaderi-Focks Duo Nov. 23 in Morgan Hill.

The duo—violinist Kimia Ghaderi and pianist Andrew Focks— are members of the artistic advisory committee to the chamber music festival, which will make its debut next June with three weekends of performances by more than a dozen professional classical musicians from around the country.

The festival has its roots in the now-defunct NorCal Music Festival, which was based at Advent Lutheran Church for two years. Kyle Jones, music director at Advent Lutheran, is the festival director.

The festival’s mission is to partner with diverse communities through transformative musical performances, relevant and inclusive programming, and accessible education opportunities, particularly in the south Santa Clara Valley.

The upcoming concert, and the festival, will be “a great way to introduce people who don’t go to San Jose or San Francisco” for classical performances, Ghaderi said. She is a Morgan Hill native who graduated from Live Oak High School in 2008.

“Kimia’s and Andrew’s performance will certainly establish Coyote Creek Music’s commitment to excellence in all we do,” Jones said.

“Morgan Hill is a great community and great communities deserve great music and art. This concert is only

the first of many more that lead up to the June festival.”

The festival itself will run June 12-20. Monthly chamber music performances beginning in January will be “mutually beneficial for our organization as well as the community with which we are partnering,” Jones said.

Pre-festival concerts are designed to create visibility in the south valley for the Coyote Creek Music Festival, expand the community’s opportunities for cultural enrichment and generate revenue for the festival itself, said Jones.

Ghaderi and Focks will perform Mozart’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in G Major, K 379; Clara Schumann’s Romance, Op. 22; Sarasate’s “Romania Andaluza;” Kreisler/Dvorak’s “Slavonic Fantasy;” Saint-Saens/Liszt’s “Danse Macabre;” and Grieg’s Sonata for Violin and Piano in C minor.

Ghaderi and Focks are music professors at the Cleveland Institute of Music and have collaborated since 2012. They performed at the 2018 and 2019 NorCal Festival, which presented both student and professional musicians in chamber and orchestral ensembles.

Ghaderi is a graduate of Rice University in Houston and the Cleveland Institute. She teaches violin at the institute and is violinist for the Akron Symphony and the Grand Rapids Symphony.

Focks teaches piano at Cleveland State University and piano and music theory at the Cleveland Institute. He studied at Florida State University, Rice and the Cleveland Institute.

Admission to the Ghaderi-Focks recital is free, with donations accepted for next year’s festival. The evening also will include a presentation about the 2019-2020 festival season.
