CLIPBOARD ART AR Workshop’s calendar of events is a creative project in itself.

STACKED UP Wood cut to precision by Bob Martinez is used for AR Workshop’s events.

It’s all DIY, the abbreviation creative types use for “do-it-yourself,” referring to unique objects with a personal touch that can’t be found, or recreated, anywhere else. AR Workshop opened in June inside The Granary on Depot Street in Morgan Hill, and since then, numerous people have let their imaginations run wild with raw materials such as wood and canvas, said owner Kristi Holbrook. “We offer a place where you can put down your phone, connect with other people and be creative,” she said. The “maker movement” has received a resurgence as of late thanks to social media, where people post photos of their creations and inspire others to tap into their creative side. The movement has been further popularized by the NBC show Making It, starring Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, which has been met with rave reviews. The reality show, which challenges competitors to craft objects based on certain themes, recently wrapped up its second season. AR Workshop was founded by Maureen Anders and Adria Ruff, who opened their first location in Pineville, N.C. in 2016. It has since exploded to more than 100 franchise locations across the country. Holbrook, a Morgan Hill native who attended local schools, has

of AR Workshop are women (with “girls night out” parties being the most popular), Holbrook said there is plenty of “guy stuff ” available. Besides the various sports-themed projects, attendees are welcome to grab a beer from the adjacent Running Shop and Hops or bring their own, and enjoy it in a bar area set up at the rear of the workshop. Guys will have an opportunity to experience the workshop with their significant other for Valentine’s Day. Seats are still available for AR Workshop’s Special DIY Date Night on Feb. 14 from 6-9pm. Couples can work on one project together, such as framed signs, pet beds, lazy Susans and more. “There’s nothing like your own community,” Holbrook said. “We truly care about Morgan Hill. It’s an honor for us to be able to come here.” AR Workshop is open for public and private workshops. For information, visit arworkshop.com/ morganhill.

returned to the city after she and her family lived in Clovis for a number of years. While in Clovis, Holbrook came across an AR Workshop in Fresno while she was looking for somewhere to take her mother when she visited. After participating in many workshops, Holbrook became inspired to open her own franchise location. Once the family moved back to Morgan Hill, she discovered a space available in The Granary. “I felt like this is it,” she said. “We went all in.” With Weston Miles Architects building out the space, AR Workshop has become a family affair, with Holbrook’s husband Bill, parents Bob and Kathy Martinez and other family members helping out with construction. Her father, she noted, has set up a woodshop in his garage, where he supplies all the wood for AR Workshop’s events. Holbrook said participants need no experience when they walk through the doors, as AR Workshop’s staff of helpers will ensure everyone walks out with a finished project. “We have people that say ‘I don’t have a crafty bone in my body,’” she said. “We assure them that they are not alone.” While the primary customers

VIOLINIST Gabriel Anker will pair Tchaikovsky’s concerto with a work by Bach as part of a preview performance Feb. 16 for the upcoming Coyote Creek Music Festival.

10

Violinist performs in festival’s third preview concert By SUSAN L. RIFE

T

he perfect music for a romantic Valentine’s Day weekend is, in the opinion of violinist Gabriel Anker, Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in D Major. “For me, personally, no other piece for the violin represents love more purely,” said Anker, who will perform the concerto on Feb. 16 as the third preview concert for the upcoming Coyote Creek Music Festival. The concerto was written by the Russian composer in 1878 in Switzerland as he struggled out of a depression after the end of

his marriage. Scholars speculate that Tchaikovsky’s student, violinist Iosif Kotek, was a love interest of the composer, but that potential gossip about their relationship kept Tchaikovsky from dedicating the concerto to him. Anker began working on the concerto after participating in last year’s NorCal Music Festival. A native of Puerto Rico, he was raised in Houston and earned his undergraduate degree in violin performance at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. He’s finishing his master’s degree at the University of Southern California.

“The Tchaikovsky concerto is pretty much synonymous with the violin,” Anker said. “I’ve been hearing it forever. It’s a piece that is pretty much required reading for everyone. It’s notoriously challenging but covers the full scope of the instrument.” Anker, who will perform with pianist Elene Kartvelishvili, will pair the Tchaikovsky concerto with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Partita for Violin No. 1, written in 1790. “I love performing Bach in general,” Anker said. “I find it’s music that changes the room instantly. This particular piece, well, solo Bach in general, I feel is a place where string musicians go for self-discovery.” The partita, one of a set of six sonatas and partitas written for solo violin, is “maybe the most virtuosic of the six,” said Anker, because each of its four movements is followed by a variation, called a double. “It’s constantly varying itself, even though it’s in the same key,” he said. “I feel like it works in contrast with the Tchaikovsky, practically speaking because it’s solo violin versus violin and orchestra, and metaphorically speaking, finding oneself and finding love, perhaps.” The Feb. 16 concert is the third of six concerts to preview the Coyote Creek Music Festival, which will take place June 12-21 at Advent Lutheran Church in Morgan Hill. Upcoming concerts in the series are Quintet Latino on March 14; soprano Heather Faulhaber with pianist Kyle Jones on April 26 and a string quartet with Anker, Kymber Gillen, violin, Kate Brown, viola, and Evan Kahn, cello, on May 31. Gabriel Anker, violin, and Elene Kartvelishvili, piano, will perform at 5:30pm Feb. 16 at Advent Lutheran Church, 16875 Murphy Ave., Morgan Hill. Free; donations accepted. Bella Vista Ranch now part of Live Oak market By TARMO HANNULA

B

ella Vista Ranch of Hollister has recently added a new stop in its farmers market schedule: Live Oak. The ranch, owned by fourth-generation farmers Deborah Muschari and Pat Stevens, grows a mixture of Italian olive varieties for olive oil production. The olives are handpicked, sorted, and crushed at one of the last stone mills in California, using granite stones from Italy.

The Tuscan varietals include Frantoio, Luccino, Pendolino, Maurino and Taggiasca. “We’ve been growing organically since 1998,” Muschari said. “That’s before a lot of growers even knew what that was. We have so many friendly customers here. A lot of people ask the deeper questions about quality here. I had one person ask me about polyphenols; I was really impressed.” Polyphenols are micronutrients

are in certain plant-based foods and are packed with antioxidants and other health benefits. Kim Tush, who owns Santa Cruz Balsamics and bottles her products at the El Pajaro Commercial Kitchen in Watsonville said she has run her stand at Live Oak for two years. Tush added that she was happy to introduce Muschari and Stevens to the Live Oak market. She said she met them at the Palo Alto market and encouraged them to feature a table of their olive organic olive oils at Live Oak. “I like the people here,” she said. “I sell at markets between Palo Alto and Carmel and Live Oak is different. The vibe here is different; people are relaxed. To me, this place feels like a community, like family.” The Live Oak market, in the East Cliff Village shopping center on 15th Avenue, unfolds every Sunday (rain or shine) from 9am to 1pm in the heart of Live Oak and draws a wide spectrum of vendors, from organic produce to seafood, balsamic vinegar, bakeries, olive oil, coffee and flowers. Long standing businesses such as Happy Boy Farm, the Kitchen Incubator, Hidden Fortress Coffee — all of Watsonville, Rooster Ridge Farm of Aptos, Fog Line Farm, Wild Stone Bakery, and Pro Edge Professional Knife Sharpening Service, Blossoms Farmstore and Coffee Shop (in the former Five Mile House in Corralitos) have served as the underpinnings of the market that also features live music, a kid’s play area and outdoor seating for dining. Started in 2000, the neighborhood market has grown into a weekly event that is shared by the communities of Live Oak, Pleasure Point and Capitola. It is now in its eighth season as a year-round market. Bella Vista Ranch also has a booth at the Morgan Hill Farmers Market on Saturdays, as well as other markets from Carmel Valley to Burlingame. HOME IMPROVEMENT

Bathroom trends for 2020

UPDATED LOOK Bathrooms should be a standout space with customizable features that simplify life.

Technology, color and more for important space

A

no longer limited to the property's existing plumbing and drainage systems. Saniflo technologies use above-floor plumbing with features such as a macerating toilet and drain pumps that can be hidden in closets or behind walls. This means previously impossible spaces—such as in garages, pool houses and attics—can now be transformed into stunning bathrooms. The Saniaccess3 is a smart choice for full baths, and the Saniaccess2 is ideal for powder rooms. Color and styles: After avoiding white color palettes for some time, white on white is back in 2020, offering a clean look with sleek appeal. Mixed materials are often used to add visual interest, such as a tasteful blend of wood and metallics in the vanity or hardware choices. Contemporary styles with clean lines and open spaces are key characteristics of the modern bathroom. When a splash of

dding or remodeling a bathroom is a popular home improvement project in 2020. Whether it's a simple powder room, a useful three-quarter or a grand master bath, it's worthwhile to research the top trends so you can create a space that is functional while also increasing your home's overall value. Sensational showers: When it comes to bathing options, showers are the focus. For instance, four in five homeowners upgrade the shower during a master bathroom renovation (83 percent) and over half increase the shower size (54 percent), found the most recent U.S. Houzz Bathrooms Trends Study. Some homeowners are eliminating the tub altogether, adding multiple showerheads and steam features for maximum relaxation. Unique locations: A homeowner's bathroom location desires are

color is called for, blues dominate the cool tones and salmons often infuse warm hues. Vanities and tops: Vanities vary in size and shape depending on space. Designs tend to be modern or transitional, with elements of interest such as sliding doors that mimic the barn-door trend. Floating vanities are favored, adding an upscale feel that opens the space. Vanity tops are made from a host of materials: as granite loses steam, quartz, marble and concrete are increasing in popularity. Finally, when space allows in a master bath, double sinks are a must. Flooring: Ceramic and porcelain tile is often the choice for the modern homeowner who can customize tile with any design they want. Large tiles are less desired, with smaller mosaic options a common choice for personalization. For those who feel tile is too hard or cold, engineered vinyl is a leading choice. It can be made to mimic the look of wood surprisingly well, but can handle the moist environment that typically comes from a bathroom. Smart technologies: Technological enhancements have entered virtually all aspects of life, and the bathroom is no exception. This is more than just streaming music to water-resistant speakers. In 2020, more homeowners desire digital shower controls allowing temperature adjustment and flow of the water through voice commands. For those with the funds, smart toilets open and close by sensor and are self-cleaning. Another growing tech trend is chromatherapy—the use of color to enhance and inspire mood—with technologies used to illuminate tubs and shower spaces. Every year brings with it trends in home design. For 2020, the bathroom is a standout space with customizable features that simplify and beautify life. If a bathroom addition or remodel is in your future, keep these ideas top of mind. —Brandpoint Content
