Hook + Line was a passion project for head chef and owner Santos Majano before the pandemic. Along with business partner Lejla Borovac, Majano had been cooking up the idea for about six years while running the kitchen at Discretion Brewery.
“We felt Santa Cruz needed a restaurant focused on what we are trying to go with—fresh seafood,” Majano says. “The idea was it will be responsibly sourced, doing what’s
best for the ocean and community and buying local as much as possible.”
Hook + Line has been open to the public for one month and it’s doing just that— offering locally sourced, fresh seafood combined with ingredients purchased from farmers markets. Dishes reflect what’s in season and rotate throughout the year to feature new options.
At the moment, patrons can choose from plates such as oysters from Morro Bay, mussel toast with hot mustard sauce on Manresa bread, and Peruvianinspired ceviche with sweet potato.
Additionally, Majano teamed with Patrick Ferraro, bar manager of Front & Cooper, and Alexis Carr, co-owner of Soif Wine, to offer a carefully curated
cocktail and wine menu. Approachability and a place to dine for any and all occasions is what Majano’s team is hoping to capture in Hook + Line, where guests can come in for a quick bite or stay for an entire meal at their leisure.
“It was never our intention to create a fancy restaurant,” Majano says. “We welcome everyone—we have highchairs for kids, and we love the idea of people going to the beach on a sunny day and then later coming here for good cocktails and oysters.”
Majano’s love for cooking dates back to 1997, when he moved to the United States from El Salvador. He started his journey into the culinary world at age 16, working as a dishwasher at restaurants
in Monterey. Within a few months, he signed up for English language classes as his interest in food grew.
“It didn’t take long for me to discover that I love doing this,” Majano says. “About a year later, I decided to look into culinary school and what the road would be like for me.”
But Majano didn’t end up going to culinary school. Instead, he joined his mentor—Bavarian chef Paolo Kautz—to help open Cafe Rustica in Carmel Valley.
“Then, from there, I wanted to take it to the next level. I decided to go to Sonoma,” he says.
While in the thriving culinary scene of the North Bay, Majano worked on the hotline at Cyrus, a Michelin-star restaurant, where his skills were tested.
“That time was more for me trying to prove I could work at that level and handle it,” Majano recalls.
But a key to his success has been to keep looking for ways to grow, and never being afraid to commit to new opportunities as they arise.
So, after his time in Sonoma, Majano and his wife were ready to put down some roots and start a family. He said they almost moved to Portland, Oregon, but decided against it, choosing Santa Cruz and moving in 2008.
After six years at Soif Wine, Majano saw an opening for a kitchen manager position at Discretion Brewery. After almost missing the chance to apply, Majano got the job in 2014.
“At Soif Wine, I was the chef, but at Discretion, I was running my own kitchen with my own employees. It was fun, and I felt we created something unique over there,” Majano says.
Every step in Majano’s career has led him to Hook + Line, where his love of cooking fresh food using ingredients that don’t overpower is displayed. His ultimate goal with the restaurant is to give back to the community with happy hours, offering small bites like fish tacos and industry nights with a specialty hamburger while experimenting with new seasonal seafood.
But right now, Majano is just happy to revel in the support they’re receiving from visitors.
“We feel the love and feel appreciated,” he says. “Everyone is responding well and are not only excited about a new food spot downtown but are excited about our concept…we are very fortunate the people are giving us the love and good feedback.”

Each summer since the late 1980s, Santa Cruz looked forward to the free Friday night shows at the Beach Boardwalk. Stars like Eddie Money appeared from 2004-2015 and again in 2017; Smash Mouth also appeared from 2014-2019; And Blue Öyster Cult as well in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015-2018. What was once the highlight of summer weekends became a distant memory during the pandemic.
Fortunately, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk transformed the idea into Evenings at the Colonnade in 2022, bringing back the free shows. This smaller venue outside the Boardwalk’s Colonnade has no admission fee and offers first-come, first-served seating and a dancing area.
This summer shows kick off June 17 and continue through Aug. 9 from 9-10:30 p.m. The events include live music on Mondays and Tuesdays, with magicians, movies and DJ dance parties the other nights of the week.
The free summer concerts don’t stop there. Just down the street, the Santa Cruz Wharf will be hosting its Tuesday Night Live Wharf Concert Series this summer at the Commons Stage. The event provides free entertainment and two-hour parking with a stamp. Performances take place on the second Tuesday of the month through September from 6 to 8:30 pm. Genres include classic rock, funk, jazz, and Latin rock. The Lost Boys featuring James Durbin play Aug. 13 and the Viva Santana Show is set for Sept. 10.
Moving to the east side of Santa Cruz, the Crow’s Nest will host its annual Beach BBQ Party at Twin Lakes Beach behind the restaurant establishment this summer. The event offers food and drinks for purchase, with live music every Thursday night through Aug. 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Genres include Brazilian rhythms, soul, funk, hip hop, Southern rock, blues, reggae, classic rock and more. James Durbin and the Lost Boys will also appear here. After the party, the Crow’s Nest will host an upstairs after-party at 8:30pm with a $10 cover charge as a continuance of live music.
Just outside of town, Capitola’s annual Twilight Concert has been held at Esplanade Park in the Capitola Village since 1984. The performances are on Wednesdays, beginning June 12, from 6 to 8 pm. This venue features an assortment of genres, including reggae rock, funk, blues, pop, R&B, old school, soul, and Americana.

When the swell is up, this spot is the place to be. A nice left careens in front of the jetty, and a turn to the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t hit the kelp-infested water.
Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break has a loyal following.
Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars, but often the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside.
Like its moniker, this place is pleasure for just about everyone. As a result, it’s generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultrathin glassed rippers.
The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners, but it also has nice, sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes make Cowell stand out.
One of the best classic breaks in the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot, and Indicators—the Lane has it all.
The best tube rides available if the conditions are just right. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.
A great reef break that is usually uncrowded (until now), especially during the weekdays. Three Mile, as with most North Coast spots south of Davenport, includes a long walk through brussels sprouts fields.
From long paddles and strong currents to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott’s isn’t for the faint of heart or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water.
Similar conditions for Waddell Creek as for Scott’s, except during the summer and early fall, when Waddell is one of the world’s premier wind- and kitesurfing spots.
