Them In

Hook + Line’s fresh seafood makes for tempting bait

BORDAS

Hook + Line was a passion project for head chef and owner Santos Majano before the pandemic. Along with business partner Lejla Borovac, Majano had been cooking up the idea for about six years while running the kitchen at Discretion Brewery.

“We felt Santa Cruz needed a restaurant focused on what we are trying to go with—fresh seafood,” Majano says. “The idea was it will be responsibly sourced, doing what’s

best for the ocean and community and buying local as much as possible.”

Hook + Line has been open to the public for one month and it’s doing just that— offering locally sourced, fresh seafood combined with ingredients purchased from farmers markets. Dishes reflect what’s in season and rotate throughout the year to feature new options.

At the moment, patrons can choose from plates such as oysters from Morro Bay, mussel toast with hot mustard sauce on Manresa bread, and Peruvianinspired ceviche with sweet potato.

Additionally, Majano teamed with Patrick Ferraro, bar manager of Front & Cooper, and Alexis Carr, co-owner of Soif Wine, to offer a carefully curated

cocktail and wine menu. Approachability and a place to dine for any and all occasions is what Majano’s team is hoping to capture in Hook + Line, where guests can come in for a quick bite or stay for an entire meal at their leisure.

“It was never our intention to create a fancy restaurant,” Majano says. “We welcome everyone—we have highchairs for kids, and we love the idea of people going to the beach on a sunny day and then later coming here for good cocktails and oysters.”

Majano’s love for cooking dates back to 1997, when he moved to the United States from El Salvador. He started his journey into the culinary world at age 16, working as a dishwasher at restaurants

in Monterey. Within a few months, he signed up for English language classes as his interest in food grew.

“It didn’t take long for me to discover that I love doing this,” Majano says. “About a year later, I decided to look into culinary school and what the road would be like for me.”

But Majano didn’t end up going to culinary school. Instead, he joined his mentor—Bavarian chef Paolo Kautz—to help open Cafe Rustica in Carmel Valley.

“Then, from there, I wanted to take it to the next level. I decided to go to Sonoma,” he says.

While in the thriving culinary scene of the North Bay, Majano worked on the hotline at Cyrus, a Michelin-star restaurant, where his skills were tested.

“That time was more for me trying to prove I could work at that level and handle it,” Majano recalls.

But a key to his success has been to keep looking for ways to grow, and never being afraid to commit to new opportunities as they arise.

So, after his time in Sonoma, Majano and his wife were ready to put down some roots and start a family. He said they almost moved to Portland, Oregon, but decided against it, choosing Santa Cruz and moving in 2008.

After six years at Soif Wine, Majano saw an opening for a kitchen manager position at Discretion Brewery. After almost missing the chance to apply, Majano got the job in 2014.

“At Soif Wine, I was the chef, but at Discretion, I was running my own kitchen with my own employees. It was fun, and I felt we created something unique over there,” Majano says.

Every step in Majano’s career has led him to Hook + Line, where his love of cooking fresh food using ingredients that don’t overpower is displayed. His ultimate goal with the restaurant is to give back to the community with happy hours, offering small bites like fish tacos and industry nights with a specialty hamburger while experimenting with new seasonal seafood.

But right now, Majano is just happy to revel in the support they’re receiving from visitors.

“We feel the love and feel appreciated,” he says. “Everyone is responding well and are not only excited about a new food spot downtown but are excited about our concept…we are very fortunate the people are giving us the love and good feedback.”

Where to Cruz for fashion finds BY MORGAN GUERRA Haute Spots

lasting jeans to delicate lace pieces destined for the bedroom, Yvonne serves those seeking timeless elegance and conscientious consumption.

Santa Cruz is home to a plethora of shopping options. Whether the object of desire is a high-end shawl as soft as a favorite blanket or a trucker hat with a chicken on it, local retailers can deliver. Here’s a quick tour of some retail-rich neighborhoods in Santa Cruz County.

Surfside Shopping

Just past the crashing waves at the famous East Cliff surf spots sit two small businesses supplying vintage finds and great gifts.

Little Red Door offers treasures of the past for the stylish people of the future. With a carefully curated collection and warm staff waiting to help, Little Red Door will provide

out-of-towners with good secondhand finds and excellent customer service.

Just a stroll away is Zen Island, hard to miss with mermaid paraphernalia jam-packed alongside a large selection of jewelry ranging in prices and a floor full of on-trend items. But the finds don't stop at clothing and accessories; Zen Island is full of gift-worthy tropical candles, mugs, plush stuffed animals, and beachy decor to bring a piece of the sea back home.

Village by the Sea

Capitola Village, known for its colorful Mediterranean-style architecture, is a great stop for a shop-around in locally owned boutiques.

Yvonne is the place to go when a shopper is looking for quality and sophistication. Presenting an array of upscale women's clothing and lingerie that cater to those with a more generous budget, Yvonne invests in its selection to offer quality items that will withstand wear and tear. From luxurious, long-

Sitting on the corner of Monterey and Capitola avenues, Kickback appeals to women of all ages and sizes. The trendy store is full of beachy styles perfect for an ocean vacation. Floral, flowy mini dresses, light linen-blend overalls and boho bags are some of the seaside styles in this family-owned boutique. Just a block away from Capitola Beach and the colorful houses everyone comes to see, Kickback helps visitors dress for the sun, sea and sand.

Head South

Visitors heading further south to check out the remnants of the cement ship at Seacliff State Beach don’t need to trek back to Santa Cruz to get some good shopping going. In Aptos, there are a couple of small businesses that are well worth a pit stop.

Caroline’s Non-Profit Thrift Shop, a charity shop honoring Christy Licker’s late daughter, donates its proceeds to local nonprofits. Full of pre-loved furniture, jewelry and clothes, from tailored blazers to shapeless dresses, there's something for everyone to

gander at. Caroline's has a great selection of fine china and unique garments, priced reasonably for the higher-end quality. Shopping here is good for the environment and the soul.

Yogis will find a thoughtfully selected array of attire at Bubble Lounge boutique in Aptos. The boutique celebrates the art of relaxation with its collection of yoga wear, loungewear, and effortlessly stylish dresses and denim. Beyond fashion, Bubble Lounge Boutique elevates the shopping experience by presenting an array of fragrances, natural cosmetics and skincare essentials, inviting customers to indulge in a journey of selfcare and rejuvenation.

Midtown and Downtown

Midtown Santa Cruz isn't the obvious choice for a retail excursion, but with new stores popping up, a stop will yield some good grub and promising shopping spots.

Forever Thrift, nestled right by the local roller rink, is a consignment store full of items for all. It takes some digging, but this spot is one of the lesser-known gems so browsers don't have to worry about the common combed-through thrift experience.

Need your morning coffee and the perfect flannel? Prepare to be delighted by Midtown Surf Shop's commitment to delivering an unparalleled experience. From unexpected treasures to innovative gift ideas, the selection transcends the ordinary gift shop. Shop surfboards or a new pair of board shorts while picking up a killer cup of joe.

It's no secret downtown Santa Cruz has the highest volume of shopping in the county. Out of the many great shops, there are a couple that are must-sees.

Oasis on Pacific is a vintage lover's dream, a meticulously curated collection that offers cool clothing spanning the 1960s to the early 2000s. From groovy retro mini-dresses to timeless accessories, every item is carefully selected, taking all the work out of the search.

Want a houndstooth messenger cap? A visor with the Golden Girls plastered all over it? The Hat Company has all that and more. At 1346 Pacific Ave, presenting a window display of crazy hat-centered dreams, The Hat Company has stood for 35 years. For the friendly staff and knowledgeable owner, there is no hat concept too outlandish, so come get that knit owl beanie or fur bucket hat.

Where to hear free music by the beach

Each summer since the late 1980s, Santa Cruz looked forward to the free Friday night shows at the Beach Boardwalk. Stars like Eddie Money appeared from 2004-2015 and again in 2017; Smash Mouth also appeared from 2014-2019; And Blue Öyster Cult as well in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2015-2018. What was once the highlight of summer weekends became a distant memory during the pandemic.

Fortunately, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk transformed the idea into Evenings at the Colonnade in 2022, bringing back the free shows. This smaller venue outside the Boardwalk’s Colonnade has no admission fee and offers first-come, first-served seating and a dancing area.

This summer shows kick off June 17 and continue through Aug. 9 from 9-10:30 p.m. The events include live music on Mondays and Tuesdays, with magicians, movies and DJ dance parties the other nights of the week.

The free summer concerts don’t stop there. Just down the street, the Santa Cruz Wharf will be hosting its Tuesday Night Live Wharf Concert Series this summer at the Commons Stage. The event provides free entertainment and two-hour parking with a stamp. Performances take place on the second Tuesday of the month through September from 6 to 8:30 pm. Genres include classic rock, funk, jazz, and Latin rock. The Lost Boys featuring James Durbin play Aug. 13 and the Viva Santana Show is set for Sept. 10.

Moving to the east side of Santa Cruz, the Crow’s Nest will host its annual Beach BBQ Party at Twin Lakes Beach behind the restaurant establishment this summer. The event offers food and drinks for purchase, with live music every Thursday night through Aug. 29 beginning at 5:30 p.m. Genres include Brazilian rhythms, soul, funk, hip hop, Southern rock, blues, reggae, classic rock and more. James Durbin and the Lost Boys will also appear here. After the party, the Crow’s Nest will host an upstairs after-party at 8:30pm with a $10 cover charge as a continuance of live music.

Just outside of town, Capitola’s annual Twilight Concert has been held at Esplanade Park in the Capitola Village since 1984. The performances are on Wednesdays, beginning June 12, from 6 to 8 pm. This venue features an assortment of genres, including reggae rock, funk, blues, pop, R&B, old school, soul, and Americana.

A guide to laughing in Santa Cruz BY DNA

Everyone needs to laugh, and there are all kinds of laughter: giggles, guffaws, chuckles, snorts and belly laughs. With up to seven comedy shows a week, Santa Cruz is the perfect place to enjoy all kinds of laughs after a day at the beach or in the redwoods.

Santa Cruz comedian Emily Catalano has been on Conan, has toured with comics like Pete Holmes, and has racked up millions of yuks on TikTok. Catalano is quick to admit that coming up in the

“Santa Cruz was a very supportive scene to grow up in,” says Catalano from her home in Los Angeles. Even SNL legends like Andy Samberg and Maya Rudolph spent time at UCSC, as well as Grant Lyon (Comedy Central), Emily Heller (Late Night with Seth Meyers) and Brendan Lynch (Adam DeVine’s House Party). Even Parks and Recreation comedic actor Adam Scott grew up in Santa Cruz and graduated from Harbor High.

So, now you have some background, but where can you go to laugh? Each venue in Santa Cruz has its own distinct groove and audience. Some shows are 16 and over and some are 21+, so bring your ID.

Mondays are a big night for comedy in downtown Santa Cruz. Abbott Square (725 Front St.) has a free showcase in the secret garden. It’s free, 16+ and starts at 7pm. Then head over to Rosie McCann’s (1220 Pacific Ave.) and go upstairs for a very relaxed, fun showcase that’s free, 16+ and runs 8-10pm.

Every Tuesday, deep in the epicenter of the Blue Lagoon (923 Pacific Ave.) is California’s longest-running weekly free comedy show. The Blue Lagoonies (as they call themselves) is a raw comedy show with a band, game show and plenty of grit. Bring your tats, ’tude and tips, but like all venues, Blue Lagoonies is a no-hate zone. The show is free, 21+ and starts at 7:45pm.

On Wednesdays head west to Santa Cruz

1440 Multiversity

800 Bethany Dr., Scotts Valley, 844-544-1440, 1440.org

A day contains 1,440 minutes, and 1440 Multiversity seeks to inspire you in each of them while you experience time differently on their beautiful campus set in the redwoods. Attend classes and connect with yourself or others.

BEACHES

Natural Bridges State Park

2531 West Cliff Dr., Santa Cruz, 831-423-4609, parks.ca.gov/naturalbridges

Natural Bridges is a Santa Cruz treasure. With fascinating tide pools and the monarch butterflies hanging from the eucalyptus trees in the fall, the locale never ceases to inspire generations of beachgoers. Bask in the beauty here.

Capitola Beach

The Esplanade, Capitola Village

It typically gets voted best beach in California. And with its close proximity to the Capitola Wharf, plus a slew of great restaurants and bars around, it’s

pretty much one big slice of paradise. To avoid the crowds, the beach on the other side of the wharf is usually less crowded. With free shuttle service to your car, you can’t beat it.

Castle Beach

East Cliff Dr. at Seabright Avenue

The castle may have fallen over, but that hasn’t affected Castle Beach’s great sandy stretch. Located between the Boardwalk and the harbor, it’s a great place to let the saltwater air flow through your hair and the ocean lap over your feet.

Moran Lake

East Cliff Dr., Live Oak

It’s one of the nicest beaches in the county, with great views and easy access. A secluded treasure.

Manresa State Beach and Sunset State Beach

La Selva Beach and Watsonville, 831761-1795, 831-763-7062

Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins that regularly surf the waves, and the priceless sand dollars that wash up on shore.

North Coast Beaches

Just a few miles north of the Santa Cruz city limits are some of the most beautiful miles of coastline in the world. Most beaches can be accessed by dirt trails or small roads.

Panther Beach

Highway 1, about 1 mile south of Davenport

A little to the left of the late Jack O’Neill’s green cliff house is a nice protected beach that makes for a sunny spot after the morning fog has burned off. Perfect pleasure.

Rio Del Mar Beach

Rio Del Mar Boulevard, Aptos

The surf is milder than Manresa, but that doesn’t preclude the nasty riptides that have towed numerous unsuspecting swimmers into the deep. Great place to tan.

Santa Cruz Main Beach

Beach Street, Santa Cruz

Boasting volleyball nets, hundreds (sometimes thousands) of sunbathers and lolling surf, Main Beach, directly in front of the Boardwalk, is pretty much how it used to be 80 years ago.

Seacliff State Beach

State Park Dr., Aptos, 831-685-6500

caught off the side of the area’s wellknown cement ship, but this destination stands out for its striking views.

East Cliff Dr. at 7th Ave., Santa Cruz, 831-427-4868

This beach caters to families, kite flyers, picnickers and the like, and it is said to be one of the warmest beaches in the county. It’s also a great place at night around a bonfire.

Waddell State Beach

Highway 1, about 5 miles north of Davenport, 831-427-2288

Rich beachcombing and tidepooling beach, though it tends to get too windy for lying in the sun. Every sort of sport except skiing seems to be practiced here, including hang gliding, windsurfing and kitesurfing.

SURF SPOTS SOUTH COUNTY

Capitola Jetty

When the swell is up, this spot is the place to be. A nice left careens in front of the jetty, and a turn to the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t hit the kelp-infested water.

The Hook

Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break has a loyal following.

Manresa/La Selva

Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars, but often the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside.

Pleasure Point

Like its moniker, this place is pleasure for just about everyone. As a result, it’s generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultrathin glassed rippers.

SURF SPOTS SANTA CRUZ

Cowell

The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners, but it also has nice, sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes make Cowell stand out.

Steamer Lane

One of the best classic breaks in the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot, and Indicators—the Lane has it all.
